@MarkBuffalo lotta stuff works properly now that didn't back in '14
we pretty much spent all of our time handling support emails about broken login for a while there
the problem of trying to bolt-on single-sign-on
Now it's smooth as butter
Unless you're using Safari or disable 3rd-party cookies.
Then it's still annoying, but at least works.

Also complaining about things non specifically is a pain, if you're the one being complained about.

eh; there's an understandable blindspot there
asymmetry
I've had thousands of conversations about login problems over the past few years, but most of the other people involved would've only had one or two. Lot easier for them to remember them.

(I once told off someone for that. Funny thing was what he was complaining about was a potential problem that a admin or server owner needed to know about)
More like (for example) I think SE devs suck because they didn't quite handle X correctly, Y years ago...
Even that's kinda like "dude, are you sure its still borked?"

@Shog9 you don't use stackauth.com any more?
anyway gtg, nite

12:18 AM
@Simon I have a funny reason for this

@diagprov not under normal circumstances

@RoryAlsop Not yet..But hoping! Waiting for buy-off on the new on-topic FAQ from the other mod, then I'll update and I have a couple of question in queue myself, then time to promote to the world.

1 hour later…
1:44 AM
@Shog9 Interesting.
@Shog9 Don't hate to mention it. It's clarifying given the situation. I do thank you for sharing that information, I wasn't entirely sure if I was ever going to find out what he was ranting about.

@DavidFreitag yeah, I was completely lost until he said something about losing his phone on twitter and I searched the chat archives.
BTW, for folks who haven't seen it... This is the UI you get now when logging out:

@DavidFreitag Possible NSFW content

@Shog9 I think we've all see that from @Simon and @AviD's super logout scripts

That bit in red didn't used to exist, and... It's pretty critical if you do ever lose a device where you're logged in here (or log in to a public computer and forget to clear everything afterwards)
@DavidFreitag oh? Not familiar with this

2:04 AM
@Shog9 Count yourself lucky, it's a PITA

@DavidFreitag Ha ha, that's awesome. Bookmarked.

@DavidFreitag this looks perfect for polluting amazon recommendations... I must send it to someone

@Shog9 Just warning though there is some NSFW content on there. It's all blurred on the site, but venturing into links may be bad.
I know exactly what I'm getting for @Ohnana for christmas. theworstthingsforsale.com/2015/05/11/super-fun-penis-candy

2:34 AM
@DavidFreitag How do I find out how to visualize RPMs on motors?

@MarkBuffalo wat

let's say something spins around at 300 RPM... I want to view examples of that
to determine how fast it is
it seems slow

It's rotating 360 degrees 300 times in a second

hey guys, I'm looking for a place to legally practice dns enum/recon
Do any of your guys would know?
Or, is any anyone familiar with dns recon?

you can legally do that to the internet
dns enum
go ahead
It's not illegal until you try to access a machine

2:40 AM
@MarkBuffalo are you familiar with it?
I'll write it in case somebody knows, I read a post : jamesjeffery.co.uk/post/142253063244/how-to-hack-kanye-west

yeah, I've been doing it since I was 14
it's not hard

@MarkBuffalo Imagine a rod that is 0.1m long that's rotating at 300rpm centered at one end of the rod. The circumference of a 0.1m circle is ~0.6m. This means that the end of the rod traverses a 0.6m distance 300 times per second. This means the end of the rod has a velocity of roughly 190m/s, or 425mph.

@DavidFreitag so that's fast?

@MarkBuffalo Have you ever traveled 425mph?

Yes.

2:44 AM
basically, what he did is, use dnsrecon.py to bruteforce subdomains (and watch the records of wildcards), he uses nmap to scan the ips that looks interesting then try to find vulnerabilities in them

750+, actually

Sure sure.

In a plane.

Would that be a good sum up of the what dns can do? Without dns zone transfer

eh, that's a bit boring, Bob
do whatever you want, as long as you aren't breaking any laws

2:45 AM
@MarkBuffalo Uhm. No. The plane was travelling 700+ mph, you were stationary.

True...
@DavidFreitag What about when I got engelled, and sucked through a black hole?

Same for a car then David

So I say again, have you ever traveled 425 mph?
@BobEbert Yes...

@DavidFreitag yes
I got engelled, galaxy quest style
and shot across the cosmos to talk to the reptillians
they sent me back here to preach their truth
duuuuuude
Steam VR
$800 for the VR kit

Looks awesome dosen't it?
Even have the space for it I suspect

BAHAHAHAHAHA

that's...wow

Very glad that image didn't onebox.

3:00 AM

It didn't for me
otherwise I woulda nuked it
Well shit, now I feel bad.

You should feel bad

@DavidFreitag

@DavidFreitag deoneboxed it

@JourneymanGeek Thank the sweet baby jesus
I swear it didn't onebox on my screen

(yes amazon oneboxes you should feel bad blah blah, try not to do it again, and so on)

@JourneymanGeek It oneboxed, but the image didn't show on my screen

3:10 AM
Well it was kinda small...

don't worry, I punished myself.

2 dozen hail lassies?

@DavidFreitag
read and watch
with your lights out

@MarkBuffalo Uhm, ok?
Is... Is that supposed to be scary?

uh... not to you, maybe?
but the wailing of the dead can be seen in the closet

3:12 AM
Someone is hiding in the closed and as the guy moves the camera they run out

Big whoop

lol
but it's still freaky if you suspend disbelief

@MarkBuffalo It's not disbelief it's occam's razor.

@DavidFreitag You're an occam's razor

3:14 AM
@MarkBuffalo I'll razor your occam

morning

7:06 AM
Morning Mr. D

How's the car situatuon, Mr. A?

I see chat continuing on that webkey question - popped up on my mobile this morning as I commuted in (by train)
Car will need to visit the garage

oh, rly?
I didn't get a hilight

And it is not long for this world, so I'll need to decide whether I ditch it now or keep going with it until it finally dies
It's in the chat off the questiomn

Mornin' all

7:09 AM
aww
well, singaporeans hardly ever keep a car more than a decade. Damned silly taxation system

Morning

Morning you folks
@Jou - I would keep it longer, as I can't get a car with equivalent specs for anything less than 4 times the price...

Yeah, totally get it
tho, whether you can get parts/fix it reasonably is a thing too
I kinda miss our old russian scrapheap :(

Well... The majority of parts are STi standard (so Prodrive and Subaru stock them) but then some parts (body work mostly) are only available in Japan so it costs a fortune and takes 3 months to get here

7:39 AM
@RoryAlsop, thanks for the ping about the "webkey".
@SmokeDispenser I tried to tackle some of OPs points.

@SmokeDispenser good points. I think 1 and 2 are where he will argue most
good point about the alternatives

Hello everybody

Morning o/

To clear things up a bit, I wasn't reacting to the bans - I was reacting to the flags. I left because it was made apparent that I am the problem although having read the transcript I don't see much difference to chat with or without me here. It's still full of "your mom" jokes, slights on each other and whatever, it just has more technical conversation. If being off topic "ruins the atmosphere" then... well...
I know that I was on the wrong side of "be nice" in the discussion with @Gilles but I didn't care at the time and I still don't. He has said plenty of hurtful and dismissive things to me in the past so I meant what I said and if any of you don't like it... well, c'est la vie I guess. In all honesty when I told @Gilles to ban me for what he perceived as highly offensive I would have happily sat it out for an hour because it would have been another method of being away from him.
Having had a quick skim through the transcript I note how everybody missed the irony of people claiming to be "saving" the atmosphere of the room by actively attacking it with flags... Anyway, I should go again before I "ruin the atmosphere"...

Have you had a good read of the relevant chat points since - some useful outcomes
No - please don't

7:50 AM
@kalina nooooooooooo

@kalina I think most of the regulars miss you.

You aren't the problem

@RoryAlsop speaking of which...

please let me type "So long, and thanks for all the drama"

@kalina I thought the atmosphere was a lot worse when you weren't here...

7:51 AM
@kalina I hope I managed to bring up the point appropriately that I objected to flags being done targeting a person not a message
@kalina nope

@Matthew well unfortunately your opinion doesn't seem to matter to those who raised the complaint

Are you guys ok with with me occationally wielding a mod hammer here, and/or occationally doing modly wordy stuff?

@kalina you could ignore them , I know I have :)

You, @JourneymanGeek - definitely

no point

7:52 AM
@kalina well there could be a point

The problem is really growth, and the way culture hits trigger points

which is all the point this room has for most participants which is a place to hang out and chat

whilst doing other things

I have a diagram to share with everyone that shocked me - hang on a wee sec. It helps explain why things have recently got a bit chaotic

7:53 AM
if people who hang out and chat here all wander off then this room will be booorrring

@RoryAlsop I read that as I have a diagram of everyone who shocked me...

and largely dead
like many other rooms on chat.se

@RоryMcCune but it will be on topic, and that's all they seem to care about

@RоryMcCune yeaaaah, like serverfault's room ;p

@kalina I don't, many other people here don't

7:54 AM

if a couple of people do well that's up to them

@kalina which was also discussed. And forcing people to keep on topic kills chat as fast as anything in my experience.

This is a graph of messages per month in here (Shog said I could share as it helps explain some things)

@kalina if it gets too horrible there's always the dmz.slack.com option :)

If only on-topic things are left in the room, I'll have to abandon, since I know barely anything about the actual topic.

7:55 AM
I'd say that now a decent 30-40% of participants are not security types

@RoryAlsop What are the spikes?

@RoryAlsop I find it interesting how every time I'm here it spikes up and every time I disappear it drops

Additionally, there is an associated graph of the number of people chatting in here and it has the same shape

interesting, but not really important

@kalina see you're obviously a good influence :)

7:55 AM
I've already basically made my descision, I have better things to be doing with my time than validating every single word I type to ensure it doesn't insult the 1% - and even then, there is another 1% entirely that I don't care the slightest whether I insult or not

@kalina - interesting as an indication of why controls need to slightly evolve. My pinned comment over on the right is very relevant here

@kalina :( you on IRC/slack/other chat places?

@kalina :-(

nope I stopped using IRC when @Adi started stalking me :p

Don't validate every single word - look back over the last 24 hours of chat and you will see there is still silly

7:56 AM
@kalina I can setup a slack channel :)
(I know other rory is cursing me right now)

0_0
IRC!

@JourneymanGeek can onebox funny GIFS on IRC :op

Actually kinda I was running a maiouchat instance for a bit.

@kalina :(

@RоryMcCune Some web clients supposedly do ;p
I'm on 2 non SE chats with SE folk tho ;p

7:58 AM
in all honesty I think we'll get more problems of the nature of what's happened recently with the current growth in room usuage. More people == more chances for misunderstanding and really lets be honest SE could shut this down at any time as we're rarely on-topic
now I think they'd be dumb to do that
but that doesn't mean it won't happen

Adi
@kalina You know, when you joke about it people might think it's true. Not nice.

@Adi if those people thought it was true for even a moment, they clearly are uninformed and don't matter - the thought that I would hang around with a stalker is hilarious and... no.

@Adi it's ok there was a sticky out tongue emoticon there, the universal sign of joking

@RоryMcCune And there's a lot different views on effective chat moderation.
I personally prefer the soft approach

@kalina I'd rather have you stay. But then again, that may be considered hitting on you;)
