Good luck :) I spent some time doing this for a live file system where we needed udev. I would guess the support is better now, but it wasn't great at the time.

Yeah I think the config I need to change in buildroot for the rootfs is /dev management. Static device table instead of dynamic with devtmpfs or devtmpfs + udev
