@AviD @RoryAlsop you here? This post needs cleaning up: security.stackexchange.com/q/52981/20074

Im on it....
also VtC while youre at it

10:26 AM
oh I did that,... I was just a bit upset that my flags and downvotes didn't nuke a single out of 4 crap posts there... it's so nice to see them go :)

@TildalWave Too used to mod powers? :P

@TerryChia no, no,... it's actually nicer to see that flagging works
with mod powaz you bloody well expect it, it'd be surprising if it didn't work :)

Here now. Bit late to the game, sorry. Been out and about.
I see @AviD sorted it

Q: Why does DestroyFVKeyOnStandby no longer work to secure Mavericks?

user32503I noticed that using the DestroyFVKeyOnStandby option for FileVault 2 in terminal no longer works since upgrading to Mavericks. Usually you type the following in terminal: sudo pmset -a DestroyFVKeyOnStandby 1 | sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 25 The first command is suppose to cause the FileVault...

can someone else please comment on this security.stackexchange.com/questions/53001/…
I'm getting a headache ...

...
That hurts just from reading.
Thankfully, I don't have a security.SE account, so I can't comment anyway!

@TildalWave Drink more coffee.

1:03 PM
@TerryChia I should prolly try something stiffer than coffee :)

@TildalWave TWSS

@TerryChia I served it for you, didn't I? :D

@TildalWave Yes, yes you did. :)

2:00 PM
sup bronies?
@FEichinger ah kerbal moderator, excellent. Is there a way to gather experiment points with sputnik?

@LucasKauffman Nope. Probes don't have a Crew-Report equivalent.

@FEichinger so what are some things I can do to gain more experiment points, I've been trying to get into a stable orbit but it's kind of hard because control without SAS ... well it sucks :(
I did a lot of experiments on the magic goo though

I think the wiki answers that better than I can.
Long story short: Get to every biome, take surface samples, take crew reports, EVA reports, get Goo containers there ...
Kerbin alone can unlock the tree well into Tiers 3 and 4.

@FEichinger oh you can just fly around kerbin as well?
I'm going to try and get into the desert
and the arctic

Yep. Kerbin has lots of biomes, each giving different results for some experiments.
Sometimes you need to be in a certain altitude corridor, etc. That Science article on the wiki tells you which.

2:09 PM
oooh nice

Still didn't find the time for KSP :(

@TildalWave ASHAMED
you should be ashamed!
It's my favorite procrastinating excuse
also I heard this sales comment today when talking about pricing: "If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys."

@LucasKauffman what's the emoticon for acknowledging shame?

Who tagged The DMZ with "Food"?

2:23 PM
brb checking in

@Lamia [food] has been in the DMZ tags as far back as 2011

@LucasKauffman Lucas is that you? The same Lucas I knew? ;P

@LucasKauffman that's "cock and balls", and it's a long one too, there's no shame in that :P

@FEichinger Okay, and I always come here wishing I'd find food but that never happened :(

2:26 PM
only food for thought

Only once, someone threw his phone to catch his pizza from falling :P

Also, you really should make some time for KSP, @TildalWave.

that's the only time the subject was related to food :p

Generally: Assume the tags have absolutely nothing to do with the topic at hand.

@FEichinger well in my defense, I am polishing my skills in GMAT which is a grownup version of it ;)

2:28 PM
Except for [double-entendre]. That's always relevant.

@FEichinger Disappointing, let's talk about food

@TildalWave Tsk!

@FEichinger I meant this one: gmat.gsfc.nasa.gov (not the "Graduate Management Admission Test")

If food were a man, I'd marry him. trying to talk about food

@TildalWave I know. I was going to make a joke about how all the kids flinging poo at each other on the KSP forums were so much more "grownup" ...
@Lamia Food isn't a man, but men are food.

2:31 PM
@FEichinger Yes and there are types of food :p

That said, I'm not getting involved in any food talk.
I have made that mistake before.

Okay, to avoid me falling for your mistake, someone should take that tag off

No, no, the tag is fine. As I said, with the exception of [double-entendre], assume every tag is irrelevant to the topic at hand.
It's usually true.

@Lamia There have been discussions about food before.
Mostly about the weird things Scots eat. /cc @RoryAlsop

@TerryChia LOL, unfortunately I missed them
Wait my memory just got fixed, we did have talked about food several times
I eat weird things too, I enjoy making up non-existence food
@TerryChia Btw, are you the one who dropped his Galaxy phone to catch the pizza? I remember something like that but I'm not sure who it was :p

2:47 PM
@Lamia Definitely not because I have never and will never own a Galaxy phone.

@TerryChia Oh
Why not, it's delicious
@TerryChia I'd never own a Galaxy phone too, neither an iPhone

I could get used to sitting in a business lounge

3:04 PM
@Lamia - it was me, sort of. I dropped someone else's pizza, then while laughing I dropped my phone by accident.

@RoryAlsop instant karma

@Lucas - of course. Why would you want to sit anywhere else? Business lounges have free food and drinks, seats, and no yowling kids

@RoryAlsop The first class lounge :P?

Nah, not as fun
Apparently
...

@RoryAlsop @kalina! Is that you?!

3:07 PM
@RoryAlsop you never been in first?

@TerryChia Not every ellipsis is @kalina.

@RoryAlsop first time in business, EY doesn't allow flying in business anymore except when the client excplicitly allows it or if there is no other option

Hey @LucasKauffman, you have experience with Heroku right?

@RoryAlsop so hows stuff at RBS?
@TerryChia very limited, except that it is rather pricey

@LucasKauffman IIRC there is no way to use python modules that depend on C code?

3:17 PM
@TerryChia I doubt it unless they install it themselves
@TerryChia that's one of the reasons why I mostly use PBKDF2 instead of bcrypt or scrypt

@LucasKauffman Hmm. That does limit the amount of crypto stuff one can do on it.

@TerryChia well you can do it in python but it will be terrible slow

@LucasKauffman Yeah, definitely not a good option.

@Lamia it is me yes

@Terry - that apple question is too old to migrate so I'll ask a Dev to do it.
@Lucas - only been in first class a couple of times. It's not enough better than business for it to be worth paying for it.

3:25 PM
@RoryAlsop yea, it looks fancy, but I doubt the glass of MacAllan is worth spending several extra K

3:36 PM
@RoryAlsop Why does it matter if the company is paying for it anyway? ;)

@TerryChia perception, it's your budget so your ERP (cost vs benefits) drops as well
There was one client though who sent a team of consultants to Makau on his private jet for the weekend
@TerryChia so what are you up to this summer?

@LucasKauffman Writing code for a python cryptography library.

@TerryChia y u no travel around?

@LucasKauffman $$$$$$

@TerryChia ah yes that might be an issue :P

3:43 PM
Pretty expensive especially if you are stuck on a small island. ;)

@TerryChia it's alright, I mean you can travel from your island to Indonesia or Malaysia or even thailand for like 150 usd
@TerryChia thailand is nice and cheap

4:12 PM
@TildalWave you should use this for arguments on space.se

@RоryMcCune uhghh! Scary!
Space pictures scare me a lot

4:26 PM
@Kisunminttu Finished with the "secretary university"?

@Adnan, yeah, I couldn't find any secretaries with skills that I consider useful...

@Kisunminttu You were actually trying to find something?
Screw you!
I bet I can find "secretaries with skills that I consider useful", and for free.
Huh!

@RоryMcCune hahaha it was worth it :)

@Adnan, yes, I was really looking with the intention of hiring one, because I totally need one of those.

@Kisunminttu You and your sarcasm!

4:31 PM
@Adnan What's that? Sounds like porn.

@Adnan Guilty as charged.

@Iszi It's an.. umm.. escort service website in Finland. @Kisunminttu and I were checking it this afternoon of curiosity.

@Adnan, you're the only "secretary" I want.

@Kisunminttu Eeeaasy there cowgirl
The DMZ is no place for flirtatious behaviour.

@Adnan, oh.
I'm sorry.

4:38 PM
@Kisunminttu he's totially lying by the way, this would not be the first flirtatious behaviour seen on the DMZ

@RоryMcCune, thanks for the clarification. I guess it's just not appropriate behavior from a block of rose quartz with googly eyes...

@Kisunminttu well given the oddness of avatars in this place I'm not sure we get to be overly restrictive there :)

5:03 PM
@RоryMcCune What are you insinuating?

@FEichinger beggars can't be choosers :op

@RоryMcCune Oh but I only beg for my life.
Whenever it is in peril due to a certain angel.

@FEichinger So he's saying you can't really choose to beg for your life - you might be begging for mine.

@FEichinger so a fairly routine part of your week then, eh.

@RоryMcCune Pretty much, yes.

5:22 PM
No, not good answer. Good diagnosis, terrible recommendation. All random numbers have a chance of collision, even ones generated using crypto-strength algorithms. Just use an atomic counter. All that the unpredictable IDs are doing are supporting the attitude that obscurity of the key is providing sufficient security. It's not, as the final paragraph points out. And once a proper ACL method is used, randomization of IDs provides no benefit. — Ben Voigt 11 mins ago
That's it, cryptographers. Stop working on your crypto problems, because... what's the point?
3
Generating random session IDs? Pfffttt.

@Adnan Lmao. Most ignorant comment I have seen in a while.

@TerryChia Check his SO account.
sigh
@TerryChia Should I bother with writing a reply?

@BenVoigt I suggest you take an introductory crypto course before calling the recommendations of others "terrible". — Terry Chia 6 secs ago
Done.
Good night. :)

@TerryChia Whoa! That's much better than what I was gonna write.
@Kisunminttu Dudette! Check your Whatsapp.

@Adnan so is that the modern equivalent of "my dear, I hope this missive finds you well" ?

5:32 PM
@Adnan I was going to say something about there being a better chance of him having a threeway with Scarlet Johansson and Jessica Alba than finding a collision with sufficiently large numbers generated with CSPRNGs but that would be impolite.
3

@RоryMcCune Apparently.

@Adnan, I had to change to another keyboard because the broken space bar was making tasking very difficult. The new one works nicely, but there's one thing I hate about it...

@RоryMcCune Arguing that almost nobody uses such language in this day and age, I'd say yes.
@TerryChia Both impolite and true.
@Kisunminttu It doesn't make the kilkity sound?

@Adnan That, too.
But the thing I'm talking about is that the back space is the size of all the other keys.
I had to put a flower sticker on it so that I can feel it so I don't press ' or enter.

@Kisunminttu Pic?

5:36 PM
@Adnan how little you know... thechapmagazine.co.uk

6:07 PM
that must be one of the least comfortable keyboard layouts I've ever seen
oh, it's a lappy?

@TildalWave No, it's not, unfortunately.

@Kisunminttu Blimey! :) There's almost not a key that I like on it ... I mean, it looks nice enough, but the layout ... oh, the layout! Insert and Delete keys in the bottom row? Return key tiny and wedged between all kinds of other navigation keys,... yet there's room for a full numeric keypad. Who designed this?

@Kisunminttu Jesus! You have one of those?!

@TildalWave Clas Ohlson, so it's not exactly a "designed" keyboard... My standard keyboard is a Razer BlackWidow, but the space bar is giving me trouble.
@Adnan I have so many keyboards. SO MANY.

6:27 PM
For me, the best keyboards are still those that use mechanical switches, preferably Cherry MX, brown or black ones. And US layout with big Return key. I've tried so many others that I'm done with the rest.
Plus, good designed ones are washable

@TildalWave yeah I like those, but they can be pretty loud for shared rooms. for non-mechanical ones, I quite like the Microsoft line stuff...

I saw that Rosewill is now making a remake of the fabulous Cherry 9000, shame I don't have a dealer here for them (I think they're US only?)
doesn't look nice, but who cares about that really
@RоryMcCune oh they don't have to be those "click" keys, that's why I like the "less loud" versions (they're distinguished by the color)

@TildalWave I love my Cherry MX blues

@TildalWave yarr is all relative though, less loud is I think better (well unless you work alone and have a nice closable door!)

6:32 PM
I love the sound of keyboards clicking.

@RоryMcCune plus the click switch keys need to be pressed in deeper, I actually like those half-depressed keys (or how they're called?) because I find them faster to type on

"half-depressed keys" lol

I just made it up :)

Congratulations. I'm now thinking of a sentient bipolar keyboard.

@FEichinger Mechanical keyboards (or whatever they're called)? Ah, I agree. Those are great.

6:37 PM
@Adnan So you like my loud keyboard after all..?

@Kisunminttu You had me at "my loud".

Oh, I didn't know there's also a fifth switch type - the greens. techreport.com/review/24461/…

a quick guide :)
@FEichinger The switches are the same but the key is designed so that it's never in a 100% released position. They kinda feel like more tactile version of laptop keys, but not necessarily "low profile". You still know exactly when the key was pressed and when it wasn't.

@Codes @Thomas (or anybody else) Self-sanity check: Isn't high quality randomness (CSPRNG-grade, high entropy seed, 128-bit output) a way to come very close to uniqueness? In other words: Due the unlikelihood of collisions, practically speaking, can securely randomly generated 128-bit keys used as unique identifiers?

@TildalWave Still thinking of a bipolar keyboard. You can't take that away from me!

6:51 PM
@FEichinger try one of those Microsoft ergonomic keyboards that split in two :)

@FEichinger Give that keyboard some lithium then.

@TildalWave Oh god, those are terrible.

@FEichinger : ) :
Actually, why doesn't anyone make a reversible keyboard? That could qualify as "bipolar" :)

Because it would also be utterly pointless.

7:12 PM
@RоryMcCune @Iszi @Terry Any input would be helpful. chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/14188032#14188032

@Adnan I'm not a crypto guy. Sacrifice 20 large random prime numbers to summon The Bear.

@Iszi Me neither. It's just that it seems to me like it makes sense. It's part of a constructive discussion (a la, pointless argument) I'm having with this fine gentleman security.stackexchange.com/questions/52877/…

Gowd, I have one doing ISO images with sudo cat

@Adnan well IANAC but 128-bit randomly generated numbers should (in practice) be unique for any practical purpose...

Can someone else please take over? Second time today that that's giving me headaches
this is the code used to create iso sudo cat /dev/sdb1 > /home/user/test.iso kindly tell me what wrong i am doing ? — aks 13 mins ago

7:29 PM
@RоryMcCune I hold that opinion. I'm waiting on confirmation

@TildalWave LOL

7:53 PM
@Kisunminttu Sorry, sweetness, my mobile has died a few minutes ago.
@Lamia How are we doing with the internships/jobs list?

@Adnan No updates, still worried

@Adnan Thank you for letting me know : )

@Lamia Nothing to be worried about. You got this. Just give it a few hours when you have sometime.
@Kisunminttu Oh, by the way, that's the nice Saudi lady from the DMZ I told you about. Say hi to @Lamia

@Lamia, hello!

@Adnan I'll do it soon and inform u with the updates
@Kisunminttu Hi
So you've been telling people about me ha? @Adnan :p

8:04 PM
@Lamia She knows a few things in Arabic. You can ask her basic stuff (how are you, good, what's your name, etc.).
@Lamia Every now and then, I mention the DMZ people to @Kisunminttu. Sometimes, funny things happen here, so I share the stories with her.

@Adnan Interesting :D

@Kisunminttu You can say something to @Lamia in Arabic (use phonetic typing in Latin characters).

@Adnan interested in learning Arabic so?

@Lamia Yeah, she is. She's been getting quite good at pronunciation in the last couple of months. Now she can say 5, 7, and sometimes even 3 (you know, the letters not the numbers).

@Adnan That's awesome, let's keep her away from numbers since they wouldn't be really teaching her :p

8:09 PM
you girls talk way to much.

@Lamia Oh no, I'm teaching her how to write in Arabic letters. She can write عدنان on her own

@Adnan Brilliant, great teacher you are. Why would you teach her how to write your name? That's useless ;p

@Adnan I can write other things on my own as well...
@Lamia, there's a romantic backstory

@Kisunminttu I'm very happy to help at any time you want

@Lamia Her favourite sentence now is عدنان بحبّك

8:11 PM
@Kisunminttu Well I might need to teach u romantic words then
@Adnan wow, did she know what it means?

@Lamia Yeah yeah.. please do.
@Lamia Oh yeah, she dose. She can even pronounce it almost the same way I do.

@Adnan I'm gonna give her Arabic songs too, how about that?

@AviD Feeling left out, khabibi?

I wanted to mark something as his and I copied his name on a piece of paper from the internet (I had to ctrl + so many times to distinguish the letters.)

meh. can't be bothered keeping track of whats going on in here anymore, and when I sample the crap you ladies blab on about, I lose all interest.

8:13 PM
@AviD :|

@Kisunminttu It's better to start learning letters separately so u can copy paste them easily ;p

@Kisunminttu Waaaait a second.. what did you want to mark as mine? Please be what I have in mind!

@Lamia, I've found that to be true. The thing that I've found most useful is writing. And talking with Adnan.
A subway sandwich :P

@Kisunminttu Not what I had in mind, but equally delicious.

@Adnan You were thinking about cookies, weren't you?

8:17 PM
@Kisunminttu suuuure. Cookies.

@Kisunminttu If u need any help or translation u can just ask me, I love teaching too :p

@Lamia, thank you for offering to help me, I'm sure I will need it at some point! : )

@Adnan Can you translate the word cookies for her?

@Lamia I don't know what would it be translated to! Baskoot? Ca3k?
and "baskoot" isn't even Arabic

@Adnan I'd go with cookies as translation for cookies
@Adnan ka3k is.
but it means cake not cookies

8:21 PM
@Lamia Well, here you go. That's so confusing!
So cookies doesn't have a translation

@Adnan I don't believe so, only if you want to make up one

Interestingly enough, the word for cookie in Finnish also means to invent.

what about mukarmeshat ? lolol

@Lamia "Crunchies"?
"Crackers"?

@Adnan yeah but I was trying to make it as translation for cookies

8:23 PM
@Lamia How about "mofalsa3at"?
:D
You know, since we're inventing stuff

Wait I got one good translation, cook ies = 6abkh ies

@Lamia Oh Jesus!! :D :D hehehehehe

@Adnan That one needs a translation from Arabic to Arabic :|

@Kisunminttu Rakas, missä sä oot?

@Adnan Täällä, kulta!

8:26 PM
äno bäo kako o o don't speak languages I don't understand

@Kisunminttu I'm gonna finish work in an hour. Your place at 00:00?

How do u pronounce that smiley ä?

Whoa! Feels strange to have semi-private conversations on the DMZ. It's just too difficult to turn the mobile on and type on that small keyboard.

@Adnan That sounds perfect.

@Lamia You pronounce it just like the "a" in the English word "sad" or "bad".

8:28 PM
@Adnan You can speak privately in a one language no one could ever understand except ur grand grand parents, if u remember what it was called :P

I think some people use a similar sound when they are doing lamb or goat sounds...

@Kisunminttu That explains enough

@Lamia Oh Jesus! That was the most fun I had on the DMZ.. ever. The best part is that it wasn't even planned.
@Kisunminttu Remind me to tell you the story about our grand grand parents' language tonight, sweetness. It's something funny I had with @Lamia and @Lucas

@Adnan And they believed it! LOL

@Adnan Oh my, that sounds fun, you can count on me to remind you about it :P!

8:32 PM
@Lamia Oh come on. We were asked many times if it's true, and we insisted it is. If they believed it, it's only because we exploited their trust in us. Horrible people, we are. Horrible.

Verdana Garantena. Glorious

@Lamia :D
@Lamia I'd give you an air-kiss if I could.
Good find.
aaaand your father has just declared a fatwa to kill me.

@Adnan omg LMAO!
@Adnan It's on the air, no one knows who sent it :P
Not my father but my fiance will do lolol

@Lamia I'll just spoof my MAC. Nobody will know!!

@Lamia @Adnan completely ignoring any context there might be here, because I'm too lazy to read up a few lines, I would remind you that there are others here who can speak (or at least, can read) Arabic (assuming thats the language you are referring to).

8:35 PM
@Adnan Exactly

Some need to work a bit harder than others.

@AviD No one can speak Verdana Garantena

@AviD Which is exactly why you should have read up a few lines. The private things I'm referring to is chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/14189041#14189041

@Lamia ah. interestingly, the top 5 hits for that on google is this chat room.

@AviD LOLOLOL You did search the word in Google!

8:38 PM
well, just now. Actually thought it was some kind of wine :-)

@AviD I'll provide you with context, sweetness. I'm find it easier to tell @Kisunminttu stuff (in English) here rather than turn on my mobile and send her and SMS.

@AviD That is because this language is historical, and If in case my father googled it and found that we talked about it in this chat room, he is going to kill me

@Lamia Yay! That makes both of us. So, wanna set up an execution date?

I don't follow.
Perhaps if I had more interest, I would have more motivation to expend the effort necessary to catch up.
Instead, I will go eat my dinner.

@Adnan Sounds great, we can eat our last meal before we get out punishment

8:40 PM
@AviD Long time ago, @Lamia made up some language and called it Verdana Garantena. She's still trolling ever since.
@Lamia Do you like Italian?

@Adnan I do, very much
@AviD If you read the chat u found when u googled Verdana Garantena u will get the story ;p

@Lamia Fantastic. I'll pick you up tomorrow at 8 pm. Dress nicely, it might be our last execution.
I mean, a slightly blacker burka or something.

@Adnan Of course it is going to be our last execution.
@Adnan LOL, I wasn't planning to, but ok since u asked

Ah, funny anecdote about that. I've been to so many Arab countries, and other than in Saudi Arabia, I've yet to see a woman wearing a burka. I've only seen them in European countries like Germany and France.

@Adnan That's weird, and funny :p
We do have many who wear them, but those who don't are more

8:47 PM
@Adnan might depend when you were last time in those countries, it's funny how fast things change for the worse and how slow for the better

@Adnan I've seen a handful in Israel.

just one example that circulates the web

@TildalWave Yeeeah. Except that Afghanistan isn't an Arab country.

Mind you, these were crazy Jewish women.

@AviD Yeah, what's up with that?

8:48 PM
Crazy since it is not part of the religion or culture.

@Adnan OK, OK, you know what I meant. Arab != Burka either

@AviD Still, looks weird to me. Regardless of the religion of the person under it.

but yeah, have seen quite a few of the Muslim variety, Bediouns too.
@Adnan oh, agreed.

@TildalWave But yeah, as to your point, my visits happened between 2009 and 2012.

I try not to mock specific religious activities too much. But its when one chooses to do something in the name of the religion, where the religion specifically does not agree with that....
anyway, dinner. Laters.

8:50 PM

@AviD Bon appetit

That's a traditional burkaa :P

@Lamia Tha hell?! It says McDonald's. When was this taken?

@Adnan couple of days ago?

@Adnan depending on the nature of these "visits" I could imagine why clothing could have been somewhat more comfortable :)

8:52 PM
@Adnan We have like annual traditional event called Janadreya, it is for Saudi cultures and stuff.

@TildalWave Jesus! No :D

The picture was taken there I assume

@Lamia Aha. That explains the golden mask

@Adnan That's a burqa not a mask but ok lol

@Adnan oh I doubt you'd be calling for Jesus there :P
FIFA world cup of 2022 is gonna be ... interesting

8:55 PM
@TildalWave Try and visit Lebanon and then tell me about Jesus. Oh, Jesus. I felt like that that country reminds you of Jesus 10x more than the Vatican City itself.
You can't go 5 meters without seeing a cross, a small statue of Mary and pictures of baby Jesus.

that's interesting
