How is a flask confusing? You open the lid, put it in your mouth, and tip back your head.

@Hiroto yeah, me too. PHP I can just use directly.

@ScottPack only if it has whiskey or scotch in there.

3 hours later…
3:05 AM
Hey guys, how'd it go?

Hola

@D3C4FF CTF? Guys completed 8/20 challenges and made it to 18th place out of 115 teams that completed at least one challenge. I'd say that's a pretty good result. :)

@TildalWave Yeah that's great!!
Sadface i couldn't make it :(

You begin and end your sentence with a sadface? You must be really sad.

3:16 AM
@Simon I am pretty sadface :( :( :( ;__; :'(
On the plus side, i did 100 meter forward facing abseil off a cliff for teh lulz

Don't worry; be happy.

@D3C4FF same here... I really wanted to do that minesweeper 3D since I already have that client from the previous CTF I could use... and the "bloat" challenge with the search for a backdoor in a web app also sounds like my kind of thing... but I didn't have enough time for any :(

Is there a write up alraedy/

Q: SIGINT CTF 2013 starts Friday 5 July 16:00 GMT

GillesLet's participate in the SIGINT CTF 2013 as team Sec.SE. During this years SIGINT in Cologne the CCCAC will hold it's second CTF. The competition is open to everyone and can be played online. Challenges will be online from July 5, 18:00 CEST until July 7, 18:00 CEST (48h). As always...

Yup there's writeups ;)

Good night!

3:24 AM
@Simon night Simon! t/c

Later @Simon
okay, so whats the next CTF then eh?

3:59 AM
@D3C4FF - Wow, I've just read it. The most disturbing to me is the pace at which they were changing underlying crypto, which clearly shows they didn't really know what they were doing (and the research shows it glaringly obvious). Cryptocat 2 is still a lot more secure though, so the analysis presented here still stands. It is far from perfect, which is a lot to expect from a host based security as it is, but at least they started acknowledging urge to implement crypto better, if they still don't quite get it spot on. :? — TildalWave 1 min ago
@D3C4FF let me check ...
> UFO CTF 2013: July 19, 2013, 2 p.m. — July 21, 2013, 2 p.m., Format: Jeopardy
> Warning! Our planet is in great danger, 19.07.13 18.00 UTC + 4 The Earth will be subjected to invasion of alien races. The people have been fighting between each other for a long time, but now is time to unite our forces. The main weapon of the militant aliens is their mind, any human weapon has no power against it. The people have no choice, we will have to play by the aliens' rules.
> The only thing we can try to defend our home planet is to counterattack them with united power of human mind. Take your part in the stand against the alien civilization!
so it's an Independence Day CTF... "It ain't over till the fat lady sings" :)) LOL

1 hour later…
5:31 AM
mornin

6:22 AM
@TildalWave Are we gonna participate in it ?
morning btw

Morning all... I'm just about to hit the pillow actually :P

@TildalWave is it morning there o_O ? If so then you're a vampire right ?

@HamZa I imagine so, yes. The team is big enough there should be at least a few of us able to take the time for it ;)

@TildalWave great

@HamZa yup I'm the vampy... usually happens when I can't see myself out of work I hate and get all inventive in postponing it as much as possible, then need to hurry :)
NSFW but Google returns some nice images when searching for "vampy bit me" :)

6:45 AM
@TildalWave lol

6:59 AM
@HamZa I'm keen! Especially since i don't have anything planned yet :)
Does someone wana register for the UFO CTF?
@TildalWave Aww shit. Time for some new pants for me!

@D3C4FF lol I was thinking which country would we choose as Sec.SE ?

@HamZa Antarctica?
Can we hack the form submission? :P
I guess whoever makes the account can choose the country :P

@D3C4FF lol damn I don't hear "the ping" of this chatroom :p

7:32 AM

2 hours later…
9:41 AM
@TildalWave please post an announcement on meta
I think I won't be around that week-end

9:52 AM
/ditto

2 hours later…
11:32 AM
@D3C4FF Hey, is there a team assembled for the UFO CTF?

11:51 AM
well done everyone on sigint, I think we did amazingly well.

Yeah :)
@RohanDurve-Decode141 The team is the same, though the people who are present aren't always the same
Ping @Gilles if you want to join

@ManishEarth I dont think I have the energy for another one so soon :P

me either
College starts on the 15th
So I'll probably be busy

@ManishEarth I find myself getting more confident with each one, so maybe it's worth it
we are not currently registered for the ufo ctf

You know what would be nice? A shared linux box that we can all ssh into and collaborate on. I was thinking of providing this, but I wasn't sure how to do this in a safe way :P
@lynks You can do it, just be sure to mention that you have registered in the chatroom. Or ping me/Gilles to privateify the room and then post the details

12:00 PM
@ManishEarth I agree we need much better collaboration. Coming from a competitive gaming background, nothing beats voice comms. But also a workspace for files et al. I agree.

Yep, voice communication would work
The thing is that person X will be working on something, drop it halfway and go to sleep
Another idea would be a shared Google Doc that lists details on the progress in each challenge (so you can just pick up where other people left off), and links to unlisted pastebins of any codes.

yeah that would be nice and simple.

Okay, thanks! I'll send @Gilles a ping.

@RohanDurve-Decode141 You need access to the room? I can add you in.

I think we all can pretty much

12:04 PM
Also, 18th place? Dammit that's good!

@lynks You're a room owner, you can. Not sure about Terry.

@TerryChia yeah it was pretty awesome.
we were 12th at one point :P

I can too, just that I'm new so I don't want to make these decisions :P
@lynks yeah!! And about 200 points away from being 7th
Well, 7th-9th

@lynks Awesome! I'll be missing most of the CTFs from now on. :(
Pretty busy with internship plus crypto classes on coursera during the weekends.

@TerryChia College?

12:06 PM
@TerryChia bad terry

Oh, where are you guys from?

@RohanDurve-Decode141 all over really

@RohanDurve-Decode141 I'm from a far away land beyond the mountains

I'm from Singapore. @lynks is from the UK I think?

12:07 PM
@RohanDurve-Decode141 iirc we listed "antarctica" as our ctf team nation

@RohanDurve-Decode141 I'm from Bombay, originally from Boston.

@Manish is from India.
@LucasKauffman is from I don't really care.
:P

nobody cares about lucas
or @Polynomial

@TerryChia He's from the land that's listed on Craigslist

12:09 PM
@lynks I care about Lucas. He promised to buy me good beer

@lynks That's not very nice :'(

@Polynomial about you not to you :P

xP. I'm from Mumbai, India btw.

I feel happy today. I emailed a site about sending passwords in plaintext. They fixed it and gave me $2 credit.

12:09 PM
@RohanDurve-Decode141 I'm from Belgium

@Polynomial haha im kidding :P btw might be moving to oxford soon

@RohanDurve-Decode141 Hey there! Where exactly?

@TerryChia It's the thought that counts.
@ManishEarth Erm, Juhu?

@RohanDurve-Decode141 I'm happy they fixed it.

@TerryChia fixed it to unsalted MD5?

12:10 PM
LOL

@RohanDurve-Decode141 Ah. Semi-close. I live near Grant Road and study in Powai

Wait, how did they fix it?
Oh nice, Powai, asin IIT? :P

@Adnan dat time you had that problem with deleting all your source code

@LucasKauffman Well, I sent them some links to questions here so I hope not...

@Adnan what did you use to recover it again?

12:11 PM
Oh, I have a feeling when devs fix stuff so quickly...

@LucasKauffman I drive across belgium about three times a year, where abouts are you?

@RohanDurve-Decode141 Dunno, I'm not about to go probing around for DB access. I noticed them emailing me my password so I notified them.

Fair 'nough.

@TerryChia No, you give them a new password-management system that has a backdoor built in. Heck, you can even give them a modified version of that mail program from the CTF :P

@LucasKauffman Something called GetDataBack. Brilliant software.

12:11 PM
@lynks Leuven

@RohanDurve-Decode141 uh yeah

So, you're an ex-IIT'ian living in Boston. Cool, you must be smart.

@RohanDurve-Decode141 Other way around. Ex-Bostonian studying in IIT :P

@LucasKauffman yep I've done the E40 plenty of times. Never stopped in Leuven though :P

Ladies and gentlemen, I'm happy to announce that starting today I'm a proud kilt owner. I shall wear it next Saturday to the bar.

Q: Fastest malware download

EdwardoFrom the precise moment of establishing an internetworking connection what's the minimum time your machine could get infected, if a hacker was waiting? one second, 10 seconds???

I'm super excited!!!

@RohanDurve-Decode141 UPDATE TABLE users SET password=MD5('salt'+password);, and then modify your login code to test against the salted hash. Hopefully

@Adnan Oh Rory!

@Adnan kilts are cool. Im still waiting for capes to make a come back.

12:14 PM
Wait.
Is that a free helpful flag there?

@lynks interesting.

Or they may have DELETE FROM users;, that's the easier solution

Oxford is a fair way from me, but closer than you are right now iirc

@Polynomial much closer, and its not exactly oxford, but around there somewhere

@lynks I'm still not sure about the underwear situation though.
What does @RoryA think?

12:15 PM
Okay, so, would "All OSs have in-built backdoors. Governments are spying on us all. Aliens have already infected all of our computers." be an acceptable answer to that question?

@Adnan Underwear with a kilt? Blasphemy!
How will you show off your man parts in that case??
@RohanDurve-Decode141 No, as a comment will probably get you 50 upvotes though.

@TerryChia You really wouldn't wanna have a look there

@Terry I'm on it!

@Adnan or does he?

@RohanDurve-Decode141 Link it here so i can +1.
Do we have community ads for our CTF team? Might be a good idea to have one.

12:18 PM
@RohanDurve-Decode141 you're in

@lynks pretty much all of oxford is about ~1h drive from here (about the same on tube)

Community Ads?
I'm in what?

Community AIDS?

Q: Community Promotion Ads - 2013

Grace NoteWe never really gave you a proper thread this past year, so your previous thread was exceedingly stale for a while. As such, here comes a brand new, shiny thread for y'all! Community Promotion Ads, let's go~ What are Community Promotion Ads? Community Promotion Ads are community-vetted advertis...

@RohanDurve-Decode141 Do you know what the subst command does on Windows? You can have a lot of fun with it by using it to prove the existence of PRISM

12:20 PM
@RohanDurve-Decode141 Speculative answers generally get downvoted.

@LucasKauffman I hope not

@Lucas - 5 minutes
@Adnan -kilts are cool. I got many free drinks in Germany, France, Belgium and Portugal because I wore mine

@ManishEarth subst is super useful :P

@RoryAlsop :p

Underwear definitely a nono
It's just wrong with a kilt
And too damn hot

12:21 PM
gotta let the wang hang out
Speaking of genitals hanging out, I saw moose knuckle today on Finchley Road. It was not pleasant.

@Polynomial Meh, I didn't post an answer rofl, I was joking.

@RohanDurve-Decode141 /me nods

Ewwwwwwwwwwwwww @poly

@RohanDurve-Decode141 Don't you know? The damn British have no sense of humor.

@Polynomial Yep. I have a batch file that creates 20-odd drives with subst, and then I claim, that "whenever you buy a hard drive, you only get 5% of the capacity. The remaining is hidden away and reserved for logging all your activities, including a constant video from the built in webcam. This program frees up that space and makes it useful"

12:23 PM
@TerryChia ^_^"

@TerryChia We do; it's just complicated and abstract.

@ManishEarth How very productive. :P

Come to think of it, with some modifications I can share it on Facebook and scare all my friends in bulk :P

@RoryAlsop Are you sure that was just for wearing the kilt?

Case in point:
"Three fellows wenten into a pubbe, and gleefully their hands did rub, in expectation of revelry, for t'was the hour known as 'happy'."

12:26 PM
Wow, he brought the room to a stand still.

(I could recite the whole thing, but it's more fun if you just watch it)
@RohanDurve-Decode141 I do that a lot.

@RoryAlsop whatabout in the winter, do you wear underwear then or can you put a mini-kilt around your manlyhood to keep it warm?

@adnan - could be my dashing good looks, my mellifluous Scottish accent, hewn shoulders and rock hard abs... But more likely it was the kilt

@LucasKauffman That's a silly question - it's always winter in Scotland!

In mid winter a kilt is still astonishingly warm. No mini-kilt required

12:28 PM
@Adnan Here's something only you would enjoy reading (text is nsfw)

Hahaha - was 27 degrees Centigrade yesterday. Damn hot watching our top tennis player win Wimbledon.
Sat in he back garden with some chilled champagne.

Ughhh, if copyright already pisses you off, this will make you laugh and then make your blood boil... bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-norfolk-23226366

@ManishEarth What's NSFW about that?
It's just a bit disturbing

@Adnan the text, you don't want to open that when someone else is with you
Well, then again, the whole DMZ is text-NSFW

12:31 PM
@ManishEarth What the everliving fuck is that guy rambling about? O_o

Hmm. Is it possible to set a different wallpaper for each workspace in GNOME?

Pretty sure everything is possible in Linux.
The question is, is it worth your time...

@TerryChia It's linux. Anything is possible. The correct question is "How much work do I need to put in to make a different wallpaper per workspace on GNOME"?

@ManishEarth Well, ya that. Pretty sure I don't wanna rewrite the whole DE for it. :P

12:33 PM
I took like 4 hours yesterday to figure out how to override my HDMI port from nVidia and softwire it to the Intel Gfx Card (without which I can't have 2 displays on Linux).

I find it funny that many Windows users say that "you need to use the terminal in linux if you want to make changes or do anything", when none of those things are at all possible on Windows

@ManishEarth Everything is possible in Windows. You just have to manually patch the process in-memory, or write a kernel-mode driver! ;)

The solution involved configuring prop nVidia drivers, Bumblebee, X11 X Window Manager and then like assigning a separate DM for each screen, because lightdm (from Ubuntu),etc can only run one instance.

(heavy Windows user here)

@Polynomial i.e., make it linux

12:35 PM
@ManishEarth nah, tbf Windows can do a lot of shit that people just don't realise.

Currently I'm using Windows because ... WIndows 8 ... shiny. I'm sure I'll go back to ubuntu in a week

Considering every operating system is copied from every other operating system, I'm sure everything is possible.

@Polynomial Well, yeah, that too

and most of the time you can do customisation without installing 3rd party stuff, which Linux usually needs to do anything radical.

12:36 PM
Plus, can Linux BSOD?
I'd like to see it try.

@RohanDurve-Decode141 kernel panic, so yes.

lol
Yeah, kernel panic

@RohanDurve-Decode141 I'm pretty sure Microsoft will disagree with you. I don't think they copied that hideous abomination called Windows 8 from anyone.

i.e. when you boot from a live usb and pull out the usb

12:37 PM
Morning gents.

@Polynomial I just made the switch to Fedora 19 and I kinda miss how polished the Windows (7) GUI is.
Of course, in my case the bash terminal makes up for it.

@TerryChia I think he means the Unix--> Linux --> Arch/Debian --> ubuntu/Fedora/Solaris/etc thing
With OSX floating somewhere on the side

I prefer to run Win7, and workstation every other OS.

Exactly which unix flavor is osx a flavor of? Or is it a direct descendant? Or is it just a halfbreed?

12:38 PM
@TerryChia Win7's UI is pretty much top of the pile in my books. Gnome2 was good too, but missing some vital bits and bobs.
@ManishEarth BSD
(if I remember correctly)

@ManishEarth BSD.
Damn, ninja-ed.

Yeah, same here.
I picked up a soon to eat and that guy stole my rep. QQ

@RohanDurve-Decode141 You can also get a grub rescue prompt in Linux with grub. Which is quite scary but not too hard to fix

@Polynomial Yeah, Win 7 is awesome. I just can't get used to Powershell.
OS X is the perfect OS for me. A very polished UI on top of a bash shell.

12:39 PM
@TerryChia there's a bash terminal emulator for Windows btw.

@Polynomial Cwygin?

nope

OSX is good, but I find Macs largely overpriced when compared to PCs.

console2 is a good one

@RohanDurve-Decode141 Welcome to Apple in general.

12:41 PM
I also recommend UnxUtils for getting stuff like grep / sed on Windows

@RohanDurve-Decode141 Look at a halfway decent Windows Ultrabook. Compare the price tag with a Macbook Air. You will be surprised about the price tag.

@Polynomial Powershell has them iirc. Or GnuTools

@TerryChia those ultrabooks are overpriced too, though, tbf
@ManishEarth yup. GnuWin32 is another option

@Polynomial Meh, I prefer very light laptops. I have a desktop for heavy lifting.

heh

12:43 PM
^
And since my budget didn't cover that, I just brought a Dell XPS 14z.

@TerryChia The one thing I need in a laptop is a big screen. I can't code on a 15" for shit.

The best Win 8 Ultrabook out there is the Thinkpad Helix IMO. The price tag made me cry a little.

@Polynomial That's what you have monitors for bro.

@Polynomial I write code on my 11" Air. :P

@RohanDurve-Decode141 not exactly portable.
@TerryChia eww
I've got a pair of 24" monitors for my desktop, which rocks for coding.

12:44 PM
17" for the win!

So, you're saying, you want to code while traveling in a train?

I've found 17" to be perfect for laptop size.

@TerryChia I write code on my S2, come at me bro.

@RohanDurve-Decode141 I do that a lot.

@ManishEarth Hey, wanna try that? Coding while traveling in an Indian train?

12:45 PM
@RohanDurve-Decode141 I also want to be able to get 2 terminals and a web browser on screen at once if I'm doing anything network-based

@RohanDurve-Decode141 Been there, done that. On a netbook. An XP netbook which I was using when my main comp died out. Was going home, but I wanted to finish something up so I coded on the train

British trains are a lot different than Indian ones, from what I've seen on TV (usually travel shows)

What? How are you even alive.

for a start, everyone gets a seat usually :P

Hopefully I'll get to find out soon, moving to UK for my bachelors if I get a visa.

12:47 PM
In general when coding I like one screen vertically placed for the code.ideally 24".and another screen for running code/email/stuff while compiling.

Space for getting in would be a good start, seat is just luxury.

@RohanDurve-Decode141 (a) Take Western Railway, not Central (Bus to Andheri and train then on), (b) don't travel anywhere near rush hour
@RohanDurve-Decode141 It's all about timing

@RoryAlsop I've tried that but can never get used to the "dead space" at the bottom of the screen if I try to move the mouse off it.
@RoryAlsop my favourite thing ever was when I had a 30" 2560x1600 monitor at an old web dev job. Dell 3008WFP

I have the bottom of my screens level with each other. It feels more natural. You have the same issue at the top, but less annoying

12:48 PM
sooooo much space
@RoryAlsop that makes sense I guess
nothing quite like having two full-size web browser windows open and still only taking up half of your screen.

Nice screen. Always wanted one of the trader desks...one of my clients had them all set up with 4 screens wide, by 3 high. All 24"
Heh

@RoryAlsop I fully agree with this, I have a 'shelf' at the bottom of my work monitors, annoys the hell out of me to have to go around it.
side note, watched 'the machinist' again on the weekend, forgot how much I liked that film.

@RoryAlsop woot?

@Polymorphin You're not the original Poly, sorry.

Heh - ambiguous @poly - sorry. Will use polyn and polym in future :-)

1:03 PM
@lynks that film is so messed up

@Rory @Poly @Rory @Poly @Rory @Poly

@lynks the bit with the arm in the machine is... yikes

If another Simon comes to the chat, I'll definitely chase him away.

Hmm, I need to make a 5-line batch look very complicated

@ManishEarth ASCII art.

1:05 PM
Aside from that :P

It needs to look like it's going something very hacker-esque when in reality it's doing nothing

Spam a few hundred key lines and comment it out.

@TerryChia yeah, that's not cmd..
And a lot of people know about it

@ManishEarth I'm good with .bat files. Show me (pastebin)

1:07 PM
mkdir "C:\Drive"
FOR %%i IN (K,L,M,N,O,P,Q,R,S,T,U) DO mkdir "C:\Drive\"%%i
FOR %%i IN (K,L,M,N,O,P,Q,R,S,T,U) DO subst %%i: "C:\Drive\"%%i
With a bunch of echos at the top
In the end I'll probably hide a goto somewhere and then spam the rest with random 1337 codez

Or execute another file with a well-chosen name.

or that

Store some %date% stuff, do some string operation on them, echo them.
They look cool
like Execution started: blah blah blah
Here's a string I use echo %DATE:~3,2%%DATE:~6,2%%DATE:~9,4%-%TIME:~0,2%%TIME:~3,2%%TIME:~6,2%
Make the script copy itself, echo stuff into the new file, then delete it
it looks strange, and people looking at it would that there's definitely something going on there
Start your code with color 0A
You can never go wrong with color 0A

@Polynomial you can take comfort in the fact that it doesnt really happen. he is dead the whole time D:

@Simon No, but I need to make the file look complicated, yet someone who knows computers but isn't familiar with bat (i.e. will immediately realize what goto does, but won't know that some random command I use is made up). So I need to have a bunch of crap that doesn't get executed -- but a reader won't know that it's obvious

1:13 PM
@lynks wait, no he wasn't... O_o

Basically I want to troll my friends :P
@Adnan yeah!

@lynks he was alive. it was the kid that was dead.

@ManishEarth Echo some bells ^G

@Adnan how do you do that?
I can type ^G, but not in the bat file

@ManishEarth Use

1:17 PM
@Polynomial watch carefully, particularly the section in the theme park. also pay attention to the prison at the end.

@ManishEarth Chat here trimmed it. Anyway, type echo then Ctrl+G then continue > file.txt.

@Adnan ah

Edit with Notepad++ and you'll get the BEL char

@lynks by "the section in the theme park", you mean the bit where he takes the photo and they look like ghosts? I think the point there is that they're not real, and he's dreaming them being there. The kid is dead and the mother is still alive, but she still doesn't know who killed her son
@lynks and I dunno about the prison bit at the end. Not sure what you're referencing.
but as far as I understood it, the only dead person was the kid. everyone else lived. the bald guy never existed and was just there to torment his psyche.

@Manish Oh, also use echo %random% somewhere

1:20 PM
the prostitute (Angie?) he got close to was real, the guy at work that got maimed was real, his boss / landlady / etc. were real too.

@Polynomial Im more referring to the horror ride, which mirrors the whole film. The severed hand, the prostitute, the hit and run, and the tunnel and the accident that kills him. After the hit and run he goes through a tunnel, in the ride there is a red car and a body bag. He looks dead throughout the whole film, he is constantly hanging around an airport (purgatory, waiting to go to heaven)
and the prison at the end, when he finally comes to terms with what he did and hands himself in, is completely painted white.
those are my thoughts anyway

@lynks I think that whole theme was just meant to reflect his absolution from guilt as a murderer.
he felt guilty so badly that his psyche broke and tormented him with it for years
and when he eventually admitted it and was bound to face the consequences, he finally broke free of the guilt and slept
I get what you're saying though. It's another interpretation, and that's what make movies like that so good.

@Polynomial yeah its an awesome film. i think my favourite scene is when he's talking to the bald guy for the first time, when there is a storm in the sky.
close enough

@Poly

1:44 PM
@Gilles Yup will do in about an hour. If you don't mind (and won't update till then) I'll also edit your last announcement for SIGINT to include results (stats really) and change the title that it's over and writeups available. ;)
g'day all

Hi sir

@Simon hi

@Simon Where is the real Simon and what have you done to him?

@Adnan Abduction!

@lynks love that shot
