1:59 AM
Boooooo, this chat is so boring on weekends.

if you know reverse engineering, ruby, exploits and other topics, we could use the help

Meh, I'd love to but I highly doubt I know some stuff that you guys don't.

2:30 AM
@Simon how'd you like to play minesweeper non-stop for several hours, possibly days, in a challenge that someone clearly should have written a bot to do?

I wouldn't like it at all

@Simon that's the spirit, welcome aboard son :)
@Simon I just played for like 2 hours, then decided I should sleep
I dont know why ive gone all cave johnson. possibly not enough sleep.

The only reason why I played that game was because I had to test it while programming it.
I really dislike minesweeper for some reason.

@RoryAlsop you around

Q: Recommendations for HD camcorder for all-day static recording?

Wesley TanseyI am working on a computer vision project where I will setup a camcorder in a room at around 6am and record people as they walk around and interact with things. The recording ends at 11pm. The room itself is huge (~50 ft tall) and I need to mount the camera either on the ceiling or on one of the ...

I LOL'd

I never thought I'd see that day: I set a server on Windows to work on Linux, wow.

2:38 AM
@lynks it's far easier just to "hack" the INI file
I've beaten every difficulty of minesweeper in 1 second flat
or atleast my score says I did

@AJHenderson we have to play 17 levels of 3D minesweeper, on increasingly large grids

@AJHenderson I am no recording expert but even I can see that there's a problem here: record for a whole day in HD on a single SD card?

@AJHenderson nc 188.40.147.121 9999

@Simon seeing as uncompressed HD takes 16.1 terrabytes per 24 hours
yeah, there is a slight problem

Oh wow.

2:41 AM
the data storage alone would cost over 10 times what he wants to spend in total
and even then, it wouldn't accomplish what he wants because the random noise in the sensor is more severe than the differences that most compression is going to cause
so it isn't going to be the exact same pixel values from frame to frame anyway
so the entire goal won't work
hense why I LOL'd

He's gonna be crushed.

I tried to avoid coming off too hard on the "learn to do computer vision better" front since he's a PHD student and I've never even taken a computer vision course

Well, it seems that he's never recorded anything. Hell, just after recording for 5 minutes on a cellphone you realize how quickly it fills up your memory.

@AJHenderson How much does compression reduce this? Won't he need a buttload of storage even if he is compressing the video?

2 hours later…
4:19 AM
@TerryChia depends on the level of compression. I mean, they fit 2 hours of bluray quality HD signal on a 25GB disk
so you could have very high quality storage for over a day of HD video on a 1TB drive
everything is relative to the level of compression in the digital video world
even feature length films are typically shot using a compression that takes it down to about 1/3 of the size of uncompressed
but they are often working with 4k formats
which have obsurd data rates

1 hour later…
5:51 AM
@AJHenderson I see. But do you need additional gear to connect a camera to a HDD?
completely clueless about this type of stuff

4 hours later…
9:46 AM
Welp, finished my dual boot setup. Pretty simple.

9:56 AM
@TerryChia thumbs up
great to hear that uefi didn't make life hard

@ManishEarth I actually set my BIOS to legacy mode. Fedora wouldn't install otherwise as Windows used MBR for my hard disk.

ah
Ubuntu is able to install on uefi. Sometimes

@ManishEarth Oh, I decided to go with Fedora.

The fonts on Chrome looks kinda iffy compared to Windows though.

9:59 AM
yeah

That's why I like OS X. (Almost) all the power of a UNIX system with a very polished UI.

@AJHenderson Hi AJ - sorry, was sleeping :-) I liked your first comment...it is amazing how low people estimate techy requirements sometimes...

10:35 AM
Hmm, made some adjustments to the font. I can live with this now.

11:13 AM
VirtualBox vs QEMU for virtualization on linux. What do you guys suggest?

@TerryChia I use virtualbox and have always been very happy with it. cannot comment on qemu

Q: What are ports and its uses

Nithin JoseI just wanted to know what are ports. I have heard that they are vulnerable to attacks. Is it a physical thing or a conceptual thing?

11:43 AM
@lynks wtf xD
While you're in Austin, head to Jackalope on Trinity and 6th, order the pork-shoulder burger, thank me when you get back. — lynks 2 mins ago

@LucasKauffman literally the best food I have ever had. Cant help mention it whenever someone mentions Austin :P

12:37 PM
A port is a harbor town or city where ships may take on or discharge cargo. They're vulnerable to attacks by enemy naval fleets or air strikes. — CodesInChaos 39 mins ago
and I died

@TerryChia VirtualBox will make your life easier.
QEMU can work, too (I have done it) but you will have to make some configuration quirks to do things such as sharing files between host and guest.

@ThomasPornin I'll second this one as well.
Unless you have a very specific reason, no need to go with QEMU
For general purpose virtualization (which is still not a word in the default Firefox dictionary), always go with VirtualBox
On another topic, anybody does/used to do deadlifts?

@lynks @ThomasPornin @Adnan Roger, thanks.

One thing I really miss on Windows... a decent music player. :( Too bad foobar2000 is a Windows only application. Any recommendations for a decent alternative? It has to be able to play FLAC files.

@TerryChia vlc

@ManishEarth Too slow

oh oops

@TerryChia Rhythmbox for music management
@TerryChia For quickly playing stuff, I'd go with what @Manish said, VLC

1:05 PM
@Adnan I hate how rhythmbox removes played stuff from the list. I have a tendency to repeat songs I particularly like
But otherwise, yeah

1:32 PM
@Adnan Hmm, not nearly as good as foobar but I guess I can live with that.

1:53 PM
Chia: WinAmp 2.91 is decent-ish. ;-)

@Hennes It has a "Win" in it, no?
Or are you going to run it on wine?

Actually, given its age I prefer to run it in my 'vmware - old games' box

2:06 PM
@Hennes Yeah. @Terry installed Ubuntu next to Windows and now he'll run Windows inside his Ubuntu
and when he wants to test some Windows malware he'll test it in an Ubuntu running inside his Windows running inside his Ubuntu which is running next to his Windows.
2

Oh, btw, if I'm on Ubuntu, is there any way to open my dual-booted Windows in something like vmware?
Also, Terry installed Fedora :P

uhm, you should be able to boot from a live disk (rather than a vmdk) from vmware player|workstation. So theoretically: yes

yay thanks

However windows and different hardware is fun

2:12 PM
@ManishEarth I know, I'm awesome.

@Adnan Huh..... didn't know that was possible...

@TerryChia If there's a will, there's a way.

Without doing weird stuff: Boot native windows (onthe bare metal). Sysprep reseal it (ditching all the drivers and a few other things), then boot it from inside your vm.
It will redetect all new hardware.
Basically the same way you move a windows image between master server and target desktops

2 hours later…
4:00 PM
I can has close stuff? :D

@RoryAlsop @AviD Mods can we have your attention? @ManishEarth here needs all his answers deleted! should be given permission to sockpuppet upvote himself to 10k!!!

FTFY
:P

@ManishEarth Stupid mod powers.

ha
@TerryChia This is why whistleblowers blow the whistle when they're out of the whistleblowee's (is that even a real word) jurisdiction
Hmm, did Snowden do that?

4:22 PM
@TerryChia yes, but not necessarily a whole lot. There are hard disk recorders that you could use, but they cost a couple hundred dollars typically too
@RoryAlsop yeah, I hoped it wasn't too cruel, but it really was the only thing I could think at first glance

5:14 PM
evening gentlemen
@Adnan those FX rifles are so sexy

5:36 PM
@LucasKauffman I know, right?!

I also like the benjamin marauder

@LucasKauffman They're very affordable as well.
Have I recommended it to you before?
I think I have
May 18 at 10:12, by Adnan
@LucasKauffman Then I'd defiantly go for the Benjamin Marauder

@Adnan I think so
:p

@LucasKauffman Thinking about one?

yea
when I have money

5:41 PM
@LucasKauffman Yeah, I think that would be about 800 euros

there are some decent second hand ones on the market
@Adnan I can order one for 600
but still will need a pump scope
and all that shizzle

@LucasKauffman I was thinking with the pump

aye
damn expensive

@LucasKauffman Oh come on, you work at E&Y

@Adnan I do have some other expensive hobbies :p

5:45 PM
@LucasKauffman Well, I wouldn't call roofie-ing girls on weekends a hobby

tsssk :p

6:05 PM
I didn't know Emma Watson was french

6:18 PM
@Griffin Who's that?
Oh, okay, the Harry Potter girl.

She's overrated.

@Simon What do you mean? Does she do anything besides Harry Potter?

6:45 PM
@Adnan She's done a few other movies but I mean a lot of people think she's pretty and stuff. I don't.

Tale of Despereaux iirc

@Simon Who would say that? She's a child

@Adnan she's like 20
or more

Jesus! I just Googled some recent pictures of her. Just not as young as expected
and to be honest, I think she's good looking.
A bit too skinny, though.

There are millions of women prettier than her.

6:54 PM
@Simon There are millions of women prettier than the prettiest girl in my city. There are millions of better looking guys that millions of other guys.
I don't see your point.

My point is that all the hype around her is overrated.

@Simon Nobody is disagreeing with you
I said she's good looking. I didn't say she's a goddess.

@Adnan I know that deep inside that's what you think.

@Simon Yeah. I can't stop dreaming about her, ever since I found out that she's actually good looking
5 minutes ago

Please stop, it'll make you sick.

7:04 PM
@Simon emma watson is a sexy beast

@Simon That can't be what's deep inside @Adnan. Emma Watson is not a cactus.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! There, I said it :P

Yup, right there. All you have to do is cut it open and release the beauty.

@ScottPack hehe interestingly looking fella

It's a beholder.

7:14 PM
@ScottPack you play D&D?

@TildalWave Pathfinder these days.

@ScottPack don't know it... but granted I didn't have time to look for games in years now :( even my missus knows more about them
last one I played was Deus Ex Human Revolution (if I got the title right)
yup
Augmented Edition :)

@TildalWave Pathfinder is an adaptation of D&D3.5 by Paizo that began development when Wizards announced 4e and non-renewed Paizo's license to publish the magazines Dungeon and Dragon.

@ScottPack that's like the oldest DnD joke in the book!
IIRC there was a module based on it...

@RoryMcCune And it still worked and was unexpected. Suck it!

7:17 PM
@ScottPack I'll check some YT videos, it seems like something I might like

@TildalWave You mean like Actual Play?

@ScottPack yup... I mean, is that some "thingy" under that name that I again don't know about, or just another word for "gameplay videos"?

@TildalWave Yeah, it's a type of gaming podcast where the content are live recorded play sessions

You guys make me feel so old :(

@TildalWave well apart from @RoryAlsop of course!

7:21 PM
I CAN SEE TOP GEAR HERE :D

@TildalWave You're not that much older than me.

@RoryMcCune no no @RoryAlsop makes me feel younger :)

@LucasKauffman You say words but all I hear is "waffle waffle waffle banana beer waffle"

I shall have to view that later.
Hopefully I remember

7:28 PM
The battles look pretty fast-paced ... not sure I'd like it I always find it rather confusing who's who and who's where.

Did you every play 3rd or 3.5?

@ScottPack I tried but I sucked at it :( And I have a few boxes of similar games here that I've never even opened, for example Kingdoms of Amalur - Reckoning and Dragon Age - Origins. But I kinda prefer games with a 1st person view or slower paced tactics

I see your confusion. I'm talking about a table top role playing game. You're talking about some other garbage.

also Borderlands (not 2), but that's not exactly the same
@ScottPack Oh LOL yes that would be completely different then
I've never played any table top games that take longer than a game of chess or maybe "risk"

7:47 PM
But risk can take 8 hours to play.
While chess is usually much shorter

It's been since college that I played a DnD session that long.

8:12 PM
@ScottPack I remember Uni days when DnD started on a Friday evening and finished sometime on Sunday!

@RoryMcCune My group was a bit outdoorsy, so we would do things like take backpacking trips and play.
Once or twice we also went to a local cave system, crawled our way into a nice room and played there.

@ScottPack never tried that, but then book related activities in the west of scotland outdoors would likely just result in very wet books!

We didn't take any books. We made heavy use of a photocopier, two sided, 4-up to take just the essential sections and character sheets.

WTF is that?!
> It is important, I dont want to waste another 6 hours tomorrow, on testing for XSS (with tags) injection
I want to punch him in the nose!

@ManishEarth Here you go

What a self-entitled ****!

first close vote cast
@Adnan I see this all the time on Stack Overflow. And I don't even actively participate there.

and I created a bounty just so I can lose the VTC privilege.
it seems that now I got it back

Infinite cleanup to do on SO
And as we get a "the close queue is over 9000!" post every week on MSO, i feel like pitching in

8:26 PM
@Adnan huh if your rep drops you lose privileges you already gained?

@TildalWave Yupsies

@Adnan that's a bit odd isn't it? I mean OK, if you lost your rep by downvotes, unupvotes,... but by using it on a bounty that's strange to me

@AlexanderBraunisch Hello

@Adnan don't think he can post in chats yet? :P

@AlexanderBraunisch Sounds Swiss
@TildalWave Awwww :(
He has no questions/answers to upvote as well

8:30 PM
@Adnan dunno what strange phase the moon is in again, but if you feel like reading how we're all discussing the same thing and OP thinks we're not, then check that RDP client security question :)

Q: Why would a remote desktop connection harm my PC?

HaLaBiWhen I try to connect to a remote desktop, a message appears which says something like "Make sure you trust this PC, connecting to untrusted computer might harm your PC". Why would it harm my PC (the host)? I can understand that if I am sharing local resources or something like that, but if I am ...

OP even edited the question to include the word "host" in it... which is a strange choice for what he describes a million times is a "client"
I mean... clients rarely "host" much anything :)
OK... they host pr0n backups :))

Damn! I feel a strong pain starting in my head down to my glutes.

I get that people would have a problem seeing something as a "client" when they use that part of the software to "control" a remote "host"

Today was the first time I do squats with weights

8:34 PM
but I really exhausted all ways of pointing that out and not resort to non-standard or wrong terminology :?
@Adnan huh?

I feel like I've been raped by 12 Heracleses

Are there any other squats? :)) I do them with the "sandbag" weight over my neck... you train muscles you didn't even know you had for trying to balance yourself properly ;)

@TildalWave Exactly!
@Tilda I've always squated without weights fearing for my back. But recently I started working on my form. So I became more confident
and I tried it the first time today
@CodesInChaos Always to the rescue with the awesome comments

@Adnan I hold the sandbag with my arms to relieve the weight on the back, but it makes you balance which means you're actually working out your back muscles also and pretty good at that too. There's not much risk involved or over-straining your back tho, if you do it with some care and stop when it hurts. This goes the same for pretty much any workout anyway ;)

Q: Trying to Develop a Solid Definition for Cyber Persona

Charles HoskinsonI've been drilling down in granularity for this question: Besides IP addresses, how else could one be identified? and I'd like to focus upon the Cyber Persona. In the question, I defined it as the aggregation of all online accounts, posts, activities and content that is connected to the actions o...

this one should be moved to meta.sec.se IMO

@TildalWave nobody voted to close to Meta.SecSE?

@ManishEarth I just did... it was VTC-ed 2 times as primarily opinion based before

@TildalWave no, you VTCd with a custom reason -_-

@ManishEarth oh shoot... there's that "move to meta" option no? I forgot about it :)

9:10 PM
@ManishEarth yeah yeah rub it in!! :P :)))

I need a good question! The day is almost ever and I should hit 200!
Somebody, post a good question!!

@Adnan why don't you post it?

Hey, btw, does this exist? A TCP/IP like system that's always encrypted where your IP is your public key?
I'm not talking about tor, a way to actually link computers into a network in a secure, ARP-less way
Instead of switching to IPv6, we probably could just as easily switch to this.

> probably just as easily
with the rate of IPv6 adoption the way it is, you might just be right

@ManishEarth The whole idea of ipv6 was that there were not enough ipv4 right ?

9:20 PM
Fun fact, my server has 15 quintillion IPv6 addresses. Seems like server companies are giving them out like candy.

@HamZa Yeah. However, a little security along the way wouldn't hurt
@Hiroto niiice. I want

@Hiroto lol

in fact, i have three servers all with 15 quintillion
wait, not 15
18
it's 2^64

@Hiroto so you could assign an IP to all the atoms in our galaxy? (I didn't do the math :P)

Uhh, there's 10^50-something particles i think

9:23 PM
@Hiroto I lost the count :))

anyway, that's a lot of IPs to cycle through if you'd be a spammer hiding from RBLs :))

@TildalWave Yeah, but it's probably under the same subnet

@Adnan Basically you asked someone to upvote your answers lol

@ManishEarth Have you seen many RBLs that can even calculate subnets on IPv6 properly? :P

9:26 PM
@HamZa Did I? Oh, no way. I would never do such thing!
:D

hahaha

Charles HoskinsonOP: I'm curious how else an actor seeking to identify someone online could accomplish this task besides just using an IP address. What methods would they employ? ^--- @Adnan answer this broad vague question, you just have to be creative :p

@HamZa He has been robbed of the chance...by meeee!
wait no wtf

@ManishEarth lol, did you rm it by chance ?

9:33 PM
no fair
bounty
@HamZa i tried to close it
did not notice the bount

@ManishEarth Yeah, it's really too broad and the OP doesn't seem to realise it. That's why even with a bounty I wouldn't answer it

I flagged it for mod attention

@ManishEarth lol, well just wait for the bounty period to finish and you can CV it as "too broad"

@HamZa To sound ungrateful, but I really don't like the question. I've just gonna be hardheartedly answering it.

@Adnan We are waiting for a canonical answer :p

9:41 PM
@HamZa "import ChuckNorris" :)))

yeah

@HamZa Ha, the scores are awesome.

sigh Sometimes, I really wonder how they come up with such "ideas"

@HamZa boredom is a powerful motivator. I mean look at computer games... some have better OS on in-game PDAs than our real smartphones have

@HamZa Yeah? Well I'm still waiting for the perfect woman. I guess neither is happening and we'll have to do with we have.

9:47 PM
lol
@TildalWave I think that some people are quite serious about the deal
@Adnan define "perfect"

@HamZa Canonical

I have found the perfect woman. Sadly I woke up after that.

@Adnan he, you either spend too much time on your computer or you live in the wrong place lol

@HamZa Both are correct, and both are irrelevant

9:52 PM
@TildalWave not sure how a double rainbow is related to a perfect woman lol ?

@HamZa you said "define perfect" :P

@Adnan we should maybe create an SE site for singles :D

@HamZa You mean *.stackexchange.com ?
3

@Adnan yeah singles.stackexchange.com

Am I the only one who chuckled?

9:54 PM
@Hiroto lol not sure why you starred that

@Hiroto Oh I chuckled, a lot. It was pretty witty. I'm proud of it
Usual @Iszi posts those
@HamZa Does this count?
56

@Adnan "Avid Enthusiast or Prosumer", "Beginner or Learner", "Just Curious",... There? Really? :))
