@JackDouglas Why? Isn't this about Biblical Hermeneutics?

12:52 AM
@Anonymous see Jack's later comment:
8 hours ago, by Jack Douglas
actually, re-reading, I think I was off in my assessment of what @Anonymous was saying, sorry Anonymous please ignore my previous comment

@Daи I didn't really get that part.

@Daи-It seemed the DV'er was just getting 'their quota' of DV's-numerous questions w/o a common theme-is this the "great equalizer"?

@JackDouglas @ Sarah I would indeed appreciate any help to strengthen my questions, as Sarah mentioned a need for yesterday. Most of my questions fall together with one particular answer; it's for hermeneutics.stackexchange.com/a/6231. They are all dealing with the consistent theme of when fatherhood must begin; only then will we reach an answer to several equations hidden within the Great Flood story. Thanks.

12:44 PM
@Sarah One great example of a Q of mine that needs strengthening is hermeneutics.stackexchange.com/q/8127. That I need to re-write somehow or delete. Still it approaches my thesis from a different direction. That one starts with how long Noah lived after the flood and when he died. Then it uses calculations from those going backwards. Thanks.
Good morning, or afternoon I guess, Caleb!
@Caleb What is a "community wiki" next to my answer for on
http://hermeneutics.stackexchange.com/a/6231/2873 ?
I'm thinking it's due to my numerous revisions. Is that correct?

@JohnMartin Yes, too many edits. But the system that detects that is not a good fit for BH and is usually wrong. I'm just manually removed that for you as there is no reason for that to be a CW post.

Thanks.

You can flag any cases you see on BH that are not intended by the author to be CW and we'll usually force it to revert. Just use the flag link and chose the custom flag to a moderator's attention, ask for CW removal and we'll review.

@Caleb All right. I sure hadn't gotten into flagging and contacting you or other moderators like that (other than via this library) to date.
@Caleb Sarah asked Jack Douglas for any suggestions to help me strengthen my Q's & A's at BH. Please let me know if you have any recommendations too.

@JohnMartin Here is fine if you want to discuss it, but if you just need something reviewed a flag is a simpler way to queue something up for the next available mod to review.

12:57 PM
Ok. Thanks.

@JohnMartin Will do, but I havn't been following most of them so they might be better equipped to do that. If I end up on one and study what't going and have feedback I'll chime in.
I don't get to study everything that comes across the site, as much as that might me nice if I could.

@Caleb Well, all right, I've just gotten deeply into the ages/#'s in Genesis. I don't want to bombard others with #'s and drive them crazy.
I may well have already done that. ;-)

@JohnMartin If you are answering questions that call for that as an answer or asking your own in that vein and they are legitimately scoped for this site that should me fine. People not interested in that topic don't have to read those posts. Now they could have other issues, but all else being equal it shouldn't be a problem. I hope your not here just to make a point about theology and actually to learn about and teach about hermeneutics.

@Caleb Great! No. I'm not trying to make a point but to obtain others' views for me to consider on a theme. I saw BH on the Internet and how well versed so many of you seemed to be. That's one key reason I joined.
@Caleb To date this has been extremely helpful.

Good.

1:08 PM
I should get some errands done. Have a great day!

@JohnMartin I'd just echo what Caleb has said: as long as each question is on-topic and answerable in it's own right, it's welcome on the site. Not everyone will have the same interest in each topic of course, but that is ok too.

6:24 PM
@JackDouglas Additionally, sometimes the questioner may not specify the viewpoint, so that means any sort of biblical interpretation (Jewish, Christian, etc.) would do. I recently made an answer using Jewish sources, plus one source from the Journal of Biblical Literature.
@JackDouglas Does this Biblical Hermeneutics.SE include any book about the Bible, including non-canonical sources? I'm pretty sure the Samaritans have a different version of their scripture than the Jews.

Q: What texts are open for examination?

CalebI assume the baseline here is interpretation of and principals behind understanding the 66 book Protestant canon. What about the extra 7 Deuterocanonical books used by Catholics? What about the extra 12 used by the Eastern Orthodox church? What about other ancient Jewish literature considered o...

+1 for your answer btw
did you read this:
Potiphar or Potifar is a person in the Book of Genesis's account of Joseph. Potiphar is said to be the captain of the palace guard and is referred to without name in the Quran. Joseph, sold into slavery by his brothers, is taken to Egypt where he is sold to Potiphar as a household slave. Potiphar makes Joseph the head of his household, but Potiphar's wife, furious at Joseph for resisting her attempts to seduce him, accuses him falsely of attempted rape. Potiphar casts Joseph into prison, to the notice of Pharaoh through his ability to interpret the dreams of other prisoners. Potiphar'...

@JackDouglas Not really. I actually used EbscoHost and tried to dig out academic resources.
The Bible, specifically the Tanakh, is the religious-cultural-historical text of the Jewish people.
As a non-Jew, I'd consider educated Jewish accounts more credible than non-Jewish accounts.

6:58 PM
@Anonymous what non-Jewish accounts are there?

7:31 PM
Is not historical, but rather on the intepretative "afterlife" of the Joseph story.
@Anonymous Getting at historical issues takes things the opposite (chronological) direction, where traditional allegiances play less of a role.
@Anonymous But even scholars have their commitments, inclined to trust certain evidence and arguments above others, some less willing to incorporate the Bible as evidence, some more willing, and all shades in between.

There seems to be an excess of Daniels and Davids on the Stack Exchange.
Too many Daniels and Davids!

@Anonymous One might even say the same of Anonymouses! ;) You just need to train your eye to catch the signals: "и" (though he doesn't get much else backwards) and "ï" (two dots must be better than one). Not to mention the (gr)avatars, of course!

I do not get this 'question' at all.. — Amaterasu 35 mins ago
@Amaterasu you are not the only one!

10:27 PM
It's windy

10:54 PM
I am very thankful that my questions are welcome here... I have been to too many places where an Atheist scientist's questions (as are mine) are met with preaching about the 'Truth' or in the stupidest case scenario - saying I am going to hell - all do not answer the question.... I used to be a devout Christian, heavy circumstances (that I am not comfortable going into) convinced me to follow the path I am on - a path that I am happy (not jut content) and feel more fulfilled with
also, many seem to see an Atheist as being someone who needs to be 'saved', I can honestly say, for my case at least, this is nonsense - worse, some seem to want to debate it - this is also nonsense.
@JackDouglas

@JackDouglas Are you still around, Jack?

11:09 PM
@Davïd yes, hi, how are you?

there he is!

@JackDouglas hi - doing okay - though it's getting late, also for you I think.

yup, working late tonight
@Amaterasu so I am :)

@JackDouglas Then you probably won't want to moderate this question?

@Davïd you mean close it?

11:12 PM
see my ramblings above?

@JackDouglas Errm... I think so. There is probably a question that could be massaged out of it, but I doubt that's what OP is after.

ahhh, Mary

@JackDouglas She been busy this evening...

@Davïd please vote, vtc and flag anything that needs it!

@JackDouglas OK - that's still pretty new for me.

11:13 PM
if there are prior comments explaining what is wrong, or close votes, it makes handling the flags easier

@JackDouglas I'm not seeing where the VtC tool(?) is - do I go to the review page?

under the question it says 'reopen'

@Davïd can you see the 'close' button?

but before it is closed, in the same place it says 'close'

@Amaterasu "Reopen" now - yep, see that one
@JackDouglas so there isn't a subsequent "me too" thing for an on-hold question?

11:17 PM
@Davïd no, moderator votes are binding
so it's generally better if closures are done by 5 community votes

@JackDouglas :) that's reassuring.

@Davïd it's why there are 3 of us :)

@JackDouglas BH.SE isn't very high volume, but you get users going on streaks, it seems
@JackDouglas Thanks for taking care of that one, anyway.
@Amaterasu Btw - while we're here - hi!

what in the world is that question going on about
@Davïd g'day!

@Amaterasu no one knows

11:20 PM
@Amaterasu Is that suggestive of a certain hemisphere? ;)

I am so tempted to put a comment "He is not the Messiah, but a very naughty boy!"
@Davïd tis indeed

@Amaterasu a cinematic reference even I would catch
@Amaterasu Stick a pin through the globe and I'd be somewhere near the sharp end. :)

lol, I probably shouldn't post that comment... be funny though

@Amaterasu At any rate! I had a thought about your archaeological interests
I tried to ping you a URL to a blog that might interest you: I don't know if you picked it up.

i can not remember, been having a crazy busy week this past week and I sometimes forget things (like putting my pants on)

11:24 PM
@Amaterasu lol - well, here's the link again just in case...

excellent, thank you for that

@Amaterasu it's not so much "archaeology and Bible" as "science and Bible", but Mark Harris does have an interest in "scientific explanations" for the old stuff
flood, plagues, you know, that sort of thing

that site is awesome!

@Amaterasu and more specifically, what the "scientific hermeneutic" is, which complements the "biblical hermeneutic" -
there are some very literalistic scientists out there, it seems! :)

@Amaterasu Ummm... I think Christians think all non-Christians, even other Christians who have different theologies, need to be saved.

11:26 PM
I like that term
@Davïd oh yes, some even more literal than me
@Anonymous true, very true

@Amaterasu :)

@Amaterasu Care to release the denomination? :)

@Anonymous my denomination?

@Amaterasu Yep.

@Anonymous I am Atheist

11:28 PM
@Amaterasu G'night all!

@Davïd g'nite David!

@Davïd Huh?
@Amaterasu Your previous denomination.

@Anonymous aaah, yes, I brought up Catholic, then went through a 'search', attending Assembly of God, Baptist, Mormon, Salvation Army, and a myriad of other churches... never felt fulfilled at all
almost like an extrmely magnified unfulfilled feeling when a question on SE goes unanswered

@Amaterasu it's now closed

it seems someone has a 'bee in the bonnet'
having said that, her question here hermeneutics.stackexchange.com/questions/8234/… I thought was a good one and interesting (and based directly on the text) - I upvoted that one
@Davïd that website is a gold mine!
