Well, that predates my professional experience. It doesn't surprise me that it predates SO, but that's the only context that I hear it constantly.

@JRE I was able to find a 100uF 16V. It was a double-stack ceramic with metal brackets. The price on Mouser was $3 in quantity of 1k. That's 10x compared to a jellybean electrolytic with same capacitance and voltage rating.
