12:51 AM
rfduino.com/rfd22124-pcb-usb-shield-accessory-board.html <-- how can you develop this small electronics? With microscope?

1:15 AM
@hhh I don't know, but that site's developer needs to learn some serious CSS!!!

hhh
1:40 AM
I think it is something like 0102

@hhh What do you mean, .01 (unit) by .02 (unit) ???
@hhh Oh, no, no, no! People are not going to start guessing sizes of electronic things again!!!

1 hour later…
hhh
2:43 AM
What is the name of this device? Suction cup?

@hhh yes, or a vacuum pickup tool.

hhh
@rawbrawb thank you, found it!
I think I am fine w this.
Do they break easily?
What is the smallest size SMD component you can do by hand?
How is it with/without microscope?

1 hour later…
4:17 AM
@hhh that depends upon ability, eye hand coordination and experience. Some people can do small stuff others are useless.

grEEtz :-)

@AnindoGhosh hey guy

@rawbrawb How's the running running?

@AnindoGhosh Just OK, getting back into it after a hiatus, but it's a real struggle. The hardest it's ever been

1 hour later…
5:47 AM
Hi!

@rawbrawb lol, isn't it a little harsh? "useless" :)
@AnindoGhosh What's up?

@abdullahkahraman ??

@AnindoGhosh ??

@abdullahkahraman why would you consider it harsh that some people cannot handle smaller components? I always lose 0603 parts, but anything bigger is simple.

5:51 AM
@AnindoGhosh No, I consider calling these people useless, harsh.

@abdullahkahraman I am useless at soldering smaller parts. I admit it, and I don't mind it being said :-)

@AnindoGhosh lol, alright then, useless
What a nerd:

Q: Python : function definition keeps returning 'None' in the middle of the desired output

Smashkingokay so i'm making code for my girlfriend for our 6th anniversary. I'm a complete noob to programming. I'm writing some very simple code to make, basically an input output machine of number inputs, in order for the user (her) to receive string outputs. i keeps seeing "none" when i run my code....

lol

good morning

Hiya @jippie

@jippie morning

6:09 AM
Don't know how/why I did it, but I slept 17 minutes through my alarm clock this morning.

@jippie Alarm clock needs a high ESR capacitor.

@AnindoGhosh it is a good thing you didn't go for a carreer in comedy ;o)

@jippie Do you mean you woke up late? What does sleeping through mean?

@jippie Yeah, I'd never know whether the audience were laughing at or with me.

6:20 AM
@abdullahkahraman it means the alarm clock didn't wake me up until 17 minutes after it started buzzing

@jippie Wow.. What did you do yesterday?

@jippie I have given your remuneration.

6:37 AM
remuneration?

Good morning!

Hallo all. I am here to remind you of the free beer question of the week.

Q: Higher current LED driver for persistence of vision display

angelatlargeProject needs We need an inexpensive LED driver IC that: Can source or sink at least 15mA/LED Has an SPI-like interface (not I2C) Has a separate latch pin Has at least 256 grayscale intensities Preferably at least 8 channels/chip Can anyone recommend some devices to consider? I think multip...

user61389
@angelatlarge can't you program a uC for that?

@CamilStaps Morning! Hello @angelatlarge

user61389
And, with 8 channels per chip interface, 360 LEDs, that means you need 360/8=90 chips, right? That also means you need 90 CS lines, if you're going to use SPI.

@CamilStaps And they say SPI is cool..

6:51 AM
Hi @CamilStaps and @angelatlarge :-)

user61389
@abdullahkahraman everyone should use CBus

@CamilStaps Yeah, the problem is AVRs only run at 20mhz, and can only receive SPI at 1/4 of the clock speed, so no. Neat idea though.

user61389
@angelatlarge try a PIC :)

@angelatlarge May be interesting:

@CamilStaps Programmers are expensive, and tools are closed.

6:54 AM
Mike is great:

user61389
@abdullahkahraman and you call me a nerd?

@CamilStaps This doesn't change the fact that you are a nerd.

user61389
@abdullahkahraman too bad

@angelatlarge Not him.

lol, great trolls around

5 hours later…
12:10 PM
Pheew, finally finished homework and sent to professor.

12:45 PM
Yuck, I have one last homework with OTAs.. Who uses OTAs nowadays?

1 hour later…
2:03 PM
@abdullahkahraman chip designers?

2:15 PM
@abdullahkahraman OTA's and CCII are the most commonly used. Most of the op-amp stuff you see on this site (voltage feedback voltage input) isn't commonly used on the inside. So the bulk of op-amps in use these days are probably of that genre. In fact most modern op-amps, norton mode current feedback etc. will ave something similar to an OTA in there. SO the answer is - everyone, they just think they are using something else.

@rawbrawb Hmm, I see, thanks.

@abdullahkahraman they're very cool!

Do you think this and this are good sources for an absolute beginner?
@rawbrawb lol, yeah, very trendy answer, motivates me :)

2:37 PM
@rawbrawb That made me laugh

3:34 PM
@abdullahkahraman the second author Edgar (hyphenated name) on the first reference is well known in the field. Anything with his name on it is worth while. I'm sure @W5VO has some recommendations being a grad student and all.

@rawbrawb Hmm, yes. But, sadly, it is not very "in-depth" and "in-detail".

@abdullahkahraman what is your text? Unfortunately, I can recommend text's but it will be lots of money. I have some printed out course material here but not in pdf.

@rawbrawb Our professor wanted us to design some of the basic circuits with OTAs and show the mathematical expressions.

@abdullahkahraman I have a large library of *.pdf's let me look.

For example, he wanted us to design circuits from simple amplifier to negative impedance, voltage adder, gyrator, current controlled resistor, voltage controlled resistor etc.

3:43 PM
@abdullahkahraman sounds like a good prof. the issue is you don't have the right text?

@rawbrawb He told us to do some "brain-gymnastics", but he also added that these information is not like "secured in a safe", "you can research".
I think most of the issue now is the graphics.. I don't know how to draw them professionally. I cannot mess up with TikZ, I don't have the time for that :)

@abdullahkahraman there are some good texts I checked my stash of *.pdf's and none are introductory except maybe one. Can you access IEEE papers?

@rawbrawb No, I cannot.. :(

@abdullahkahraman even at the library?

@rawbrawb I am so new to school that I even don't know where the library is.
@rawbrawb Thank you for your time. I have to go now. I guess I will deliver this homework one week late, too.. It is hard to work and study at the same time.
Bye everyone!

3:50 PM
@abdullahkahraman Wow. No problems.. Good luck

@rawbrawb Thanks, I will need it a lot :)

4:05 PM
@rawbrawb Sorry, I've been out of the analog IC loop for a bit
pumping 30kW (peak) through an H-bridge - slightly different frame of mind than OTA's
@abdullahkahraman Call/Email the library and see if they have online access to IEEExplore. If they do, see if they have provisions for off-site access. Our uni does, and I can browse to my heart's content at home

I just blew up my AVRISP MKII programmer, whole computer shut down, case was filled with smoke, what a waste!!! Bye, bye 37 USD!

@user1832583 How?!

@W5VO I have no idea!!!
@W5VO I see a really tiny chip blown up in there too!

@user1832583 so there's nothing on your board capable of supplying power to your programmer?
and you didn't short out the programmer?

@W5VO I never used that stupid thing!
@W5VO I was looking at some articles
@W5VO And I figured I needed an external power supply to program my ATtiny, so I tried that, and something bad happened...
Another thing that makes me REALLY mad is that I spent two weeks trying to figure out how to program my uCs with it on linux...

4:16 PM
@user1832583 Do you think it's possible you plugged the cable in backwards (rotated 180 degrees)?

4:32 PM
@user1832583 Man, that sucks!

@W5VO No, there is only one way to plug the cable in
@angelatlarge Tell me about it

@user1832583 From the website: "Powered from USB, does not require external power supply"

@angelatlarge Stupid me! BUT, the LED turned red which ment no external power source, so i tried that out and...
BOOM!

@user1832583 Though I would think you could also turn off the powering option: it's useful to be able to program a chip without providing it with power. But most of the time I have the programmer power the chip: makes things easier.

4:38 PM
@user1832583 Red LED was on?

@angelatlarge Yup!

For me, it is hard to tell what it means from the website (I've never used the AVRISP).
? "No target power" = "I will not provide target with power"?
? "No target power" = "No target power detected, so I'll provide it with power"?
Something else?

@angelatlarge I am new to AVR so am kind of stupid, I miss my nice and simple little Arduino Uno!!!
Here I come Uno!!!

@user1832583 Sorry to hear about your troubles, and the $30+ flushed down the toilet. You can use your Uno to program the ATtiny :) @jippie is all about Arduino ISP programmers. I myself use a USBtinyISP, haven't had any problems yet.

@angelatlarge I know, that's what I am going to do for the next week or so...
Until I get a new programmer

4:44 PM
@user1832583 What new programmer are you getting?

Do you have any recommendations?
I would like to be able to program it using Ubuntu and avrdude

I think we need an ISP programmer comparison page somewhere.
Just about anything you get will be supported by AVR dude.

Maybe CNET does that...

@user1832583 Ha! Funny :)
Bein a new person, I guess you probably don't know which chips you want to program.

Well
I want to program AVR!!! No PIC for me!

4:47 PM
@user1832583 Yeah, there are different AVR chips out there.

I have 2 ATiny85s and two ATmega328 - PUs
They look pretty good to start out!

Another question: how much work do you want to put into your programmer? Do you want to make it from scratch? Do you want to solder it together? Or do you want it to be ready to go out of the box?

Just jumping in here to say that an USBTinyASP or USBASP clone, at some $2 to $3, works quite well with AVRdude, and the added benefit is that one can afford a few explosive situations without being significantly out of pocket.

@AnindoGhosh means USBASP methinks

@angelatlarge OUT OF BOX please

4:50 PM
Well, then consider something like this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/USBASP-51-AVR-ISP-Downloader-With-On-board-Overcurrent-Protection-/400467568441

I once has an RC plane, spent around $500 flew one foot... Then crashed...
It has some issues

You can find similar ones cheaper on Ebay, I just grabbed the first one I saw

Also if you intend to program a bunch of DIP AVRs over time, a small suggested investment: Use a ZIF socket on a board, add in a socket to plug in your USBASP, and you're all set. No broken IC pins, easy life.

@angelatlarge Wow that one looks simple

@user1832583 If you are one of those people (like me) that tends to break things, then I would recommend a cheaper programmer. Like one of these Ebay things.

4:52 PM
Too bad sparkfun doesn't sell things like that,

@user1832583 They do. Search their site for AVR ISP

Except for one product that looks like that but it is only for the ATtinys

@AnindoGhosh I don't know if I agree with this: you will still need to build a circuit with your chip. Taking it in and out of the programmer - back and forth between prog and breadboard doesn't sound like fun.

What is a search term for programmers like that
?

@user1832583 SparkFun does, they just mark up anything you can find on EBay by about 50 to 100% for the poor saps who thus get poorer buying from them :-)
@angelatlarge Oh I was not even proposing that.

4:54 PM
@AnindoGhosh I don't think you should put down Sparkfun: they are a very nice company, and they do a lot for the maker movement here in the US

@angelatlarge My proposal is around a situation where you want to program a series of ICs - Just dump one into a ZIF, program it, then plug it into your circuit.

@AnindoGhosh Plus they generall sell higher quality products than you get direct from Schenzen
@AnindoGhosh I don't think this applies to @user1832583

@angelatlarge No doubt - but at a price premium.
@angelatlarge Possibly.

@AnindoGhosh Sure. Price premium isn't always bad. I bet your reactor designs have a price premium :)
@user1832583 Why don't you buy an assembled USBtinyISP from adafruit then?
@AnindoGhosh One of the things you get for the premium is support, and documentation :)
@AnindoGhosh (in English)

@angelatlarge Look, that I can debate with data: I've seen a bunch of SparkFun boards, and they were more often than not, of the same exact quality, perhaps even from the same factory, as corresponding items from eBay. I'm not referring to eBay crap items, but the better ones - and I buy a lot of those.

4:57 PM
@user1832583 AVR ISP programmer
@AnindoGhosh OK, I am willing to concede that point: I don't have enough data. I stand by my overall point though :)

@user1832583 Check this one: ebay.com/itm/…
That last eBay item will not show up if you search for USB ASP, only USB ISP.

@AnindoGhosh The other thing is that buying from SparkFun you don't need to know which ebay item is a quality one and which isn't. They products are supported, documented, and like I said, SparkFun does a lot for the maker movement here.
@AnindoGhosh And I think if people want to support them (as I do), you should let them.

@angelatlarge Fair enough. If I were on a US$ budget, I'd not mind the premiums, they are not as much as some niche sellers have. However, for an Indian Rupee budget, the couple of US$ here and there are a big deal.
@angelatlarge Also agreed. On a similar vein, if people want to point out lower cost options albeit with higher risk (as I do), that should be fine too :-)

@AnindoGhosh I wouldn't think of recommending SparkFun to a person in India. If anything you guys should be supporting your local maker movement promoters, such as yourself :)
@AnindoGhosh Hard to argue with those last two points.

Most important of all, I guess a few years of heavy duty eBay farming builds up both an instinct for the crap products, and a skill for finding items at the best deals... So it's not for everyone.

5:04 PM
@AnindoGhosh Ebay farming? Is that what you kids call it nowadays?

@angelatlarge There are unfortunately only a couple of local manufacturers who do anything worthwhile - the rest are shameless scalpers. There are perhaps two vendors in India I am happy with: The InduinoX guys, simply for making something sufficiently value-added to merit a price premium, and nex-robotics.com for a great inventory and fantastic delivery time.
@angelatlarge Yup, it's exactly like a grind-based MMORPG.

@AnindoGhosh I bet your Schenzen -> Home delivery schedule is much better than what we have here. Sigh.

@angelatlarge The two big issues with Indian sellers: (1) They cheat the customer on shipping cost - we're talking massive mark-ups compared to what the shipping company charges even for an individual walk-in customer (2) Almost ubiquitous lack of support for online credit card payment.

@AnindoGhosh I figured India would be a country where phone/SMS-based payments would be ubiquitous. Is that not true?

The lack of online payment is largely because the taxation and paperwork for selling something in India are totally non-business-friendly, so most of the transactions get done offline and hidden away without reporting them on the books.
@angelatlarge Not true. See above.

5:09 PM
@AnindoGhosh Shadow economy they call it.

@angelatlarge China to India delivery varies from 1 week (stuff shipped from Hong Kong) to 6 weeks (shipped from mainland China), but rarely does one Get a non-delivery. ... and I for one never order something which has a shipping fee, unless the item is a kilo or more in weight.
@angelatlarge Yup. Unfortunate. There's no way indigenous intellectual property or trade will reach first world quality as long as the government is out to scalp the citizen multiple times per transaction. Double taxation? No, that's on a good day. Besides the official taxation at ingress and egress, there is bribery needed just to keep the shutters up.

@AnindoGhosh When I buy from Ebay, I just order by cost+shipping, and look from cheapest on up.. I don't really care if the shipping is officially free or not: they either build the cost into the product price or they charge you separately. Either way, what comes out of your pocket is the same. I don't care what they call it.
@AnindoGhosh Sounds like my first home country.

@angelatlarge That used to be true until 4-5 years ago. Some sellers I deal with regularly report that the Chinese government has given them a sweet deal on any "small packet" envelope shipping: No postal charges as long as the transaction is reported and the ForEx properly accounted for. Most sellers make their profits from that shipping price difference.
@angelatlarge That can only be Italy / Sicily / middle or far east

@AnindoGhosh Yeah, I always suspected that shipping is subsidized for Chinese mfgs
@AnindoGhosh Russia

@angelatlarge Ooooooh a country I always wanted to revisit. I went to Moscow as a child. Loved it.
@angelatlarge Subsidized as a means of bringing small scale exporters into a business environment where other nations cannot compete. I think it's a brilliant strategic move - the postal department picks up the cost which then gets subsidized by the foreign exchange benefits accrued to the international trade department.

5:17 PM
@AnindoGhosh That was back in Brezhnev time?

@angelatlarge 1975-77

@AnindoGhosh I don't understand that last part: "foreign exchange benefits accrued to the international trade department."?

grEEts all.

@angelatlarge Basically, the more the balance of trade favors export over import, the greater the value of one's currency over foreign currencies. The Chinese small merchants don't receive their money in US$ or whatever the transaction was in, they get the equivalent renminbi. The ForEx goes to the government coffers, strengthening their position in international trade.
@rawbrawb grEEtz!

@rawbrawb Hallo

5:21 PM
@angelatlarge @AnindoGhosh talking international trade and balance of payments I see. World domination next!

@angelatlarge What's interesting is, though, that not all exporters get that free postage benefit. There are a bunch of terms and conditions involved, and I suspect some subjectivity and silver-crossed-palms
@rawbrawb Nahh, World Domination proposal got shut down ;-)

@rawbrawb: I see writin'. (writin dirty!). Why don't you write me up a nice answer, eh?

@AnindoGhosh LOL, THAT's right ... it was hilarious.

Me is back!

@angelatlarge ?

5:23 PM
I watched some videos on how to program an ATtiny85 with an arduino

@user1832583 Welcome back :-) Please change your name on this site, else one instinctively thinks you're a certain infamous troll.

@AnindoGhosh Will do!

@angelatlarge Oh I see, you're refering to me writing up some answers but not YOURS.

@AnindoGhosh Good point!
@user1832583 We all cringe a little when we see usernames like that.

5:25 PM
@user1832583 let's suggest a name like Timothy Stanton? ;)

@user1832583 make sure that your usename does not include t, o, n, and y, in that order.

@angelatlarge username = coding_corgi

@angelatlarge Funny

@angelatlarge you're quite proud of your tag aren't you?

5:26 PM
@rawbrawb I didn't come up with it, but still makes me laugh

@rawbrawb I think it was an inspired tag that needs to be promoted for relevant types of questions.

@angelatlarge it's a good one, is it still up?

@user1832583 Should be good. That way, like the rest of us, you can be known for your own stupidity, and not someone else's.
@rawbrawb YES!
@rawbrawb I think so...

@rawbrawb Sadly no.

Q: 555 timer monostable time constants

Coder101When making an monostable circuit with a 555 timber, the time that pin 3 is on is calculated using this: time on = 1.1 x R1 x C1 My question is why is 1.1 included.

YEah, it worked
how can I check if a capicator is electorlytic

5:31 PM
not surprizing though. He snarked out on the first answer - "
Will do a -1 - please explain in further depth "
It was simple math after all.

@W5VO The OP thought you had infallibility turned on.

@angelatlarge but we KNOW you better @W5VO !
;)

@rawbrawb Wow, that's annoying.

@coding_corgi ask if it has voted!

@rawbrawb what?

5:33 PM
@rawbrawb what?

- to explain: you did write electorlytic .... ;)

@rawbrawb Oh, nice!

@rawbrawb okay, yeah i did spell that wrong

@coding_corgi 95% of the time, cylinders are electrolytic (if they are capacitors), and non-cylinders are not.

@angelatlarge ok so if they are circle type they are ele...

5:35 PM
@angelatlarge You need to tag a couple more questions with it --- if there's only one the tag can be automatically cleaned up. (Not sure if you actually need some non-closed questions, which would be tough for this particular tag).

@coding_corgi Don't say "circles" - ceramic caps are flat disks, you could say that's a circle too.
@coding_corgi Think in 3D

@angelatlarge What about the tantalii? What about the tantalii? ;-)

@ThePhoton I don't want to get Tony-ed on this site. There is an extensive discussion of this tag on [meta.so]. It isn't a nice thing, is it?

user61389
@angelatlarge to be pedantic, ceramic capacitors are cylinders too, but with a very small height. ([metaso])

so all capacitors in this kit are ele... : sparkfun.com/products/10003

5:37 PM
@AnindoGhosh They are blobs usually?

@angelatlarge Well, Tantalum caps are electrolytics too. Polarized to boot.

@coding_corgi The 10pF cap is probably ceramic

@angelatlarge It's not one to use very often...but there are times when it's needed.

user61389
@coding_corgi the orange ones are ceramic. The caps in the top corner are electrolytic though, yes

@AnindoGhosh Aren't all electrolytic caps polarized?

5:38 PM
Also, never repeat that word Tantalii, it's what one funny prof from my college days used to call them if there were several: "1= tantalum, 2 = tantalii"

@angelatlarge the big one
?

@angelatlarge Nope

the tiny one?

@AnindoGhosh Do you have a counterexample for my edification?

user61389
@AnindoGhosh it isn't even correct Latin :(

5:39 PM
OK, I gotta do some work. I really need to finish to stoopid Android app today, so I can work on a better app :)

@angelatlarge Used by some DIY audio enthusiasts. Basically, two pol-caps back to back, half the capacitance at a tenth the price of a corresponding amount of polyfilm capacitance.

@AnindoGhosh Holy smokes. Thank you.

can I use an arduino as a programmer so I can use avr?dude to program my attiny

@CamilStaps It was never meant to be correct - it was a signal to us students that we should laugh loudly.

@angelatlarge actually no smokes - you can't put them in backwards right?

5:42 PM
@rawbrawb Non-filter smokes, you can.

@AnindoGhosh yes yoda-san

@angelatlarge This is what I love about electronics: There's always more to learn, and not necessarily in the arcane world of lethal chemicals and airborne glass particles
@rawbrawb ... says the yoda amongst us all.
yoda-est?
Yodic Meditation?

@AnindoGhosh look look look , @AnindoGhosh misspelled something!

OK now someone point me to something interesting in Electronics that is within my design/infrastructure capabilities, exciting and new, and forces me to waste a few hours madly researching it. :-) @angelatlarge I gave you non-pol-electrocaps, it's your turn.

@AnindoGhosh You should try to make a hydroponic system that controls the settings while growing hydroponic lettuce

@coding_corgi no. next?

Go work, sell the lettuce an give me the profits
@AnindoGhosh go spend the reset of your like trying to make some sort of hardware to detect aliens

@coding_corgi :-) Do I need to detect them? We are all aliens.
@coding_corgi Good try, though

@AnindoGhosh Yeah, were all hybrids... Make a device to find PURE breed humans!

5:53 PM
@coding_corgi To provide you some context, some of us here in chat are a bit on the electronics geek end of things - we get excited and chat for hours about transformers made without magnetic coils. :-)

@AnindoGhosh I am more of a programmer, but I see what you mean, some people spent two hours guessing sizes of electronic parts yesterday...

@coding_corgi True dat
@coding_corgi Well, to be fair, in those same two hours I also taught myself a fair bit of Autodesk Inventor for a CAD project.

@AnindoGhosh I also learned that geeks (like me) are lame

@coding_corgi The geek shall inherit the earth and other gaia-class planets.

But the good thing is that the popular people aren't here right know...
