Though it is already looking different from how it originally came out. I don't have instagram, but I have another photo adjusting app installed.

I cropped it, changed color temp, adjusted contrast, and exposure (that's what the tuning selection is called) and added that white frame on it.

And sharpened and resized too. Not quite instagram though.

Call for help! Anyone know Java and care about open source? I'd like to get LightZone properly packaged in Fedora, and it's kind of a mess.

Or if you don't use Fedora, that's fine, because the improvements will help everywhere.

well, it does include the stand, which is pretty adjustable, and I got it for only $200

thats 2300 lumens...its like a 150 watt bulb

that can run on battery with no heat generation

I got the light I did mostly because it was available locally and seemed like it might work and I could return it if it didn't

either way I'm going to have to return the particular one I got as one of the modules had a quality control issue (a part is missing from one of the release latches)

which is a (completely stupid) argument I've heard people make before since it isn't really free when you have to buy an overpriced computer to get it.

the UI annoys me more than OSX, but since it isn't a commercial product, it fails to meet my expectations by less

the flip side of that is the biggest mistake I ever made in terms of a software purchase

back in 2004 or so, I bought a copy of the "professional" DVD production software Sonic DVD Producer with a real time MPEG-2 card for $5000 for a project I was working on at the time

it was the biggest waste of money I have ever spent

the MPEG-2 card was fantastic and well worth it's $2500 of the overall cost

but the software crashed non-stop, had only one or two minor features not present in DVD Studio Pro at the time and was an absolute nightmare to use

I don't use any Sonic products at all any more as a result

lesson learned eh

at least I wasn't spending my own money on that project

or I would have been well and truly pissed

but I was spending money that my friend's billionaire uncle gave us for the project

gets to be even bigger problems at the super wealthy level. Zuckerburg is rich, but he owns primarily facebook stock. He starts dumping it, the price plumets and his wealth with it

that's why if you watch, if he is smart, he will start diversifying out with slow sales as much as possible

but to actually divest is not simple

without destroying the value of the company at the same time

similarly, if you don't make money work for you, it doesn't go very far

but that's something outside the realm of experience of your average lottery player, who generally has to spend what they make on consumables for living

(which is why they are playing the lottery in the first place)

you are working because you enjoy the work

but those types aren't happy no matter how much they get, so they don't stop

the majority though just keep going because they love what they are doing

using myself as the example of why you don't see people reaching a fixed amount and stopping, I'd need about 3 million in the bank to live at the level I consider comfortable for the rest of my life without having to work again, but to get to that point would involve spending more time than I would want to spend to get there. I'd also still want to do work anyway because not doing anything is boring

thus, I don't bother pushing to make that kind of money

because I don't have the need to accumulate it

and it isn't worth the effort to get there

I don't want the stress of working 80 hours a week for less pay getting a startup off the ground that may or may not work until multiple failed attempts

I've got the connections, skills and knowledge to do it if I wanted to, but I have no interest because I can work and live comfortably without the stress

GIMP has its place. I've used both and GIMP has issues, sure, but for 90%+ of people its fine

@rfusca my counter argument would be that a large number of people that might be able to figure out Photoshop would have trouble with the difficult UI of GIMP

GIMP isn't missing a whole lot of functionality in terms of what you CAN accomplish

what it is missing is how you accomplish it

I use GIMP at work since I don't have a Photoshop license for work. I can do just about anything I need to in GIMP, but it takes substantially longer with more trial, error, steps and frustration

the trick is that when you get in to the people that need the power of GIMP/Photoshop, probably the majority actually do have a reasonable case for having the cost difference be worth it, because it makes their work faster and they are probably doing commercial work in many cases

but if average joe consumer want's to play with powerful tools, gimp is the way to go

well, for small startup businesses - it makes far more sense where their cash flow is low. 50$ a month gets them the full suite of products - not just photoshop. (Unless the outright purchase has come down a lot.)

the only way I would consider CC is if I had a guarantee of future pricing in writing and/or a guarantee of being able to use the software version that was current when I stopped paying.

if they decide two years from now to increase the cost to $100 a month, you suddenly go out of business with no access to any of your prior work assets (other than final outputs)

now, if they actually offered permanent fixed pricing, I would sign up

because it is worth $50 a month

but not if I don't have a guarentee it will stay there

and the fact they already decided to screw all their existing customers out of their substantial investments doesn't exactly give me warm fuzzies about Adobe's current management's honesty

your argument effectively applies to any SaaS that offers generalized pricing

I argue against any SaaS that you can't easily replace or migrate away from

if it has generalized pricing

in Adobe's case, it is even worse though because they aren't actually providing any hardware

the normal argument for SaaS is that you don't need your own infrastructure

but CC still requires your own infrastructure

note, if they still had a purchase copy available, then I wouldn't object to a small business using CC

because it offers a transition path if the rental gets too expensive for them

buy one copy, CC others as needed

but when they removed the purchase outright option and went to a perminant rental model while offering nothing more than they had before, they lost all credibility with me

the only reason to move in that direction is to be able to coerce people... period

otherwise purchase and SA makes sense

there is no reason not to offer that as an option other than to be able to screw people in the future

because it looks EXACTLY like the current setup of monthly payments, but offers people an out

they chose to deliberately not offer that

I always assumed it was geared more toward's anti-piracy and students and such. I know TONS of people that had PS pirated because it was crazy expensive, but now are doing CC to get the new versions legally at a reasonable monthly fee

so I guess that's the other half of my anti-CC argument, it puts you over a barrel with a company that has actually demonstrated they have no respect for the businesses of customers

that's the Software Assurance model that Microsoft uses

and it works great

it solves the update schedule issue and the predictable income issue while also allowing end users control of their environment

right now, Lightworks is trying to sucker people into buying v11.5 outright at a discount though, since v12 comes in a couple of weeks and you don't get major upgrades on an 'outright' buy

I'm still interested to see what happens to Adobe overall with CC, there are still a lot of people unhappy with it

and I'm sure more will start realizing the risk they are exposed to after the initial pricing finishes

and realize how stuck they are and the fact they'll only get more stuck

most people in the arts field don't really understand the software licensing business model. Meanwhile, I work in that industry

so I understand subscriptions quite well and when they are good and when they are not

our 'tech lead' at church yesterday in our staff meeting was telling my pastor we needed to replace the Mac that runs ProPresenter because it was getting slow because of all the media files we have on it..... at which point I felt the need to point out, that unless its really nearly full (85%+ ... fragmentation, etc) then storage capacity has nothing to do with 'speed'. And then everybody in the room proceeded to tell me I was wrong lol

I don't think its really 'slower' - our usage and expectations have changed a bit is part of it

it think its perspective issues

they shortened the lyrics that go up on screen, so it requires more frequent changes - which means any delay becomes more noticeable. And its much, much more often playing videos - whereas videos where previously quite rare. So, a minor delay to a start of video goes from a few times a year to a few times a service.

i didn't have any information on the Mac at the moment. After the meeting I sent a note stating that the Mac is only 12% full and that we should define the problem better before we decided that a 'server' is the right solution.
