Mobilephone photography :)

@EsaPaulasto it needs an instagram filter
03:47
@PatoS - Yeah, why not :D
Though it is already looking different from how it originally came out. I don't have instagram, but I have another photo adjusting app installed.
I cropped it, changed color temp, adjusted contrast, and exposure (that's what the tuning selection is called) and added that white frame on it.
And sharpened and resized too. Not quite instagram though.

11 hours later…

Call for help! Anyone know Java and care about open source? I'd like to get LightZone properly packaged in Fedora, and it's kind of a mess.
Or if you don't use Fedora, that's fine, because the improvements will help everywhere.
@PatoSáinz this post needs an anti-star ;)
@mattdm sadly, I'm not a java developer :(
@mattdm yup, sorry, no java :/
plus, i'm a darktable guy ;)
hey, any thought on the work light thing?
14:40
work light?
@AJHenderson worklight!
light source I'm experimenting with
@AJHenderson ah (looking up in posts), its ok I guess - kinda expensive for what it is
well, it does include the stand, which is pretty adjustable, and I got it for only $200
thats 2300 lumens...its like a 150 watt bulb
that can run on battery with no heat generation
14:46
shrug if thats important to you
I may still swap it out though
I'm not sure if the portability matters enough to me
and I'm not sure how much of a problem the very cool temperature of the light will be
thats my thing - I'm almost always somewhere inside if I need light
in which case I bought a couple of these to stick on cheap stands
two 150 watt bulbs and I can put an umbrella on it
yeah, the other thing I was thinking about doing is going the high tech route and using a couple of philips hue bulbs in something like that
would be around the same price for a little less light, but I'd be able to adjust the color temp
afternoon
hola
14:51
how goes it
and the hue bulbs seem to work fairly well with my camera
but setup would be a bit harder as it would need a small wireless network to connect with the hue bridge
I was also contemplating just doing some china balls, though I couldn't find a good china ball solution that I liked the look of
have you posted that middle one before?
@rfusca darktable is sweet. I just want to give people more options. :)
14:58
there's gotta be a java programmer around here somewhere. :)
@AJHenderson no, evidently I am repeating myself photographically
@AJHenderson maybe I'm not picky enough - I know that normal CFL bulbs aren't full spectrum, but they seem fine for what I'm doing. I've just making sure all the temps match and i've been happy
@mattdm yup, options is never bad
@AJHenderson filmtools.com ?
15:19
@rfusca I'll have to check them out later
I got the light I did mostly because it was available locally and seemed like it might work and I could return it if it didn't
either way I'm going to have to return the particular one I got as one of the modules had a quality control issue (a part is missing from one of the release latches)
@AJHenderson ic
that sucks
@rfusca well that is part of why I got it locally
far easier to drive to the store and swap it out
indeed
well, the last piece of my new computer comes in today
everything but the CPU showed up saturday
@rfusca does that include a quad-slaved liquid nitrogen-cooled GPUs?
a 56" LED panel?
@ElendilTheTall 8 core, liquid cooled CPU
15:30
ooooooooooo
shiny
27" LED WQHD screen
32 GB RAM
SSD
you'll be playing Solitaire at 200fps
i know, right
going with Linux?
both linux and windows probably
video editing on linux has come a long ways - especially recently...but it just crashes too much
15:32
you could always make it a hackintosh
never
@ElendilTheTall you "could", but why on earth would you ever want to
@AJHenderson fusing the Unix based nature of Linux with the ease of use and compatibility of Windows
hahaha
sorry, I couldn't keep a straight face
@ElendilTheTall you have a funny definition of "ease of use" and "compatibility'
;)
every time I use a Mac, I wish the computer had a face so I could punch it
8
15:37
OSX was fine until they started trying to integrate it with iOS
then Microsoft go and make exactly the same mistake with Windows 8
I absolutely despise the OSX UI
here's an idea guys - make 2 OS' that are nice and compatible with each other, but are designed to work on the devices they are used on
@ElendilTheTall not to be confused with OS/2
@AJHenderson meh, it's not that much different to windows
@ElendilTheTall it's not that much different from the way some people use windows (with task bar awefulness)
I'm a start menu kind of guy
and atleast the task bar makes it clear what programs are running and which aren't
and the top bar that changes menus based on what window you open is a pita
ie, I want to punch the mac in the face every time I have to use one
15:40
you should try using GIMP, where each palette is a different window thing
there's a reason I call people out every time they compare GIMP to Photoshop
that's a big part of it
I despise GIMP almost as much as OSX. If OSX was open source and available for every computer for free, I'd hate GIMP more
the fact that GIMP is free gives it a lot more leniency in my view of it
since you get what you pay for
indeed, that's its USP
what? OSX?
Yes it looks like it was designed in Soviet Albania, yes it has annoying palettes, yes masking is a massive headache, yes it has 84 different plugins... but it's free
GIMP
ok, I wasn't sure if you were trying to make the argument that you didn't have to pay for OSX anymore (didn't they do something with free or much cheaper updates recently)
which is a (completely stupid) argument I've heard people make before since it isn't really free when you have to buy an overpriced computer to get it.
but GIMP truly is free
and thus my standards are significantly lowered
the UI annoys me more than OSX, but since it isn't a commercial product, it fails to meet my expectations by less
the flip side of that is the biggest mistake I ever made in terms of a software purchase
back in 2004 or so, I bought a copy of the "professional" DVD production software Sonic DVD Producer with a real time MPEG-2 card for $5000 for a project I was working on at the time
it was the biggest waste of money I have ever spent
the MPEG-2 card was fantastic and well worth it's $2500 of the overall cost
but the software crashed non-stop, had only one or two minor features not present in DVD Studio Pro at the time and was an absolute nightmare to use
I don't use any Sonic products at all any more as a result
15:50
lesson learned eh
at least I wasn't spending my own money on that project
or I would have been well and truly pissed
but I was spending money that my friend's billionaire uncle gave us for the project
ah well
do you happen to have that guy's number, I want a new lens ;)
yes I do and no you can't have it
I also have the number for my multimillionaire cousin. Millionaires are actually far, FAR more common than people realize.
billionaires are still pretty rare though
personally, I see no need for that kind of money on a personal level though, and I'd rather have free time to pursue my interests than put in the kind of work time that most millionaires I know of have to put in
my cousin and her husband travel a lot and work hard a large portion of their time.
I'm sure
I think I'd get enough so that I could be comfortable for the rest of my life, then retire
what really annoys me is these people that win the lottery and then say "I'm not going to quit my job as a toilet cleaner though"
WTAF
give me the money then you useless tit
well, that's the other thing about money, it is worth far less if you don't know how to use it
and when you have lots of it, it is harder to use than you might expect
quantity and liquidity are not the same thing
for example, for my cousins, a large part of their assets is their company
gets to be even bigger problems at the super wealthy level. Zuckerburg is rich, but he owns primarily facebook stock. He starts dumping it, the price plumets and his wealth with it
that's why if you watch, if he is smart, he will start diversifying out with slow sales as much as possible
but to actually divest is not simple
without destroying the value of the company at the same time
similarly, if you don't make money work for you, it doesn't go very far
but that's something outside the realm of experience of your average lottery player, who generally has to spend what they make on consumables for living
(which is why they are playing the lottery in the first place)
@ElendilTheTall and the thing about that, is that at those kinds of amounts of money, you are no longer working for the money
you are working because you enjoy the work
well, I take that back
some are working for the money
but those types aren't happy no matter how much they get, so they don't stop
the majority though just keep going because they love what they are doing
using myself as the example of why you don't see people reaching a fixed amount and stopping, I'd need about 3 million in the bank to live at the level I consider comfortable for the rest of my life without having to work again, but to get to that point would involve spending more time than I would want to spend to get there. I'd also still want to do work anyway because not doing anything is boring
thus, I don't bother pushing to make that kind of money
because I don't have the need to accumulate it
and it isn't worth the effort to get there
I don't want the stress of working 80 hours a week for less pay getting a startup off the ground that may or may not work until multiple failed attempts
I've got the connections, skills and knowledge to do it if I wanted to, but I have no interest because I can work and live comfortably without the stress

2 hours later…
17:41
GIMP has its place. I've used both and GIMP has issues, sure, but for 90%+ of people its fine
18:30
@rfusca my counter argument would be that a large number of people that might be able to figure out Photoshop would have trouble with the difficult UI of GIMP
but that's only so strong since both have complex UIs
to really master
GIMP isn't missing a whole lot of functionality in terms of what you CAN accomplish
what it is missing is how you accomplish it
I use GIMP at work since I don't have a Photoshop license for work. I can do just about anything I need to in GIMP, but it takes substantially longer with more trial, error, steps and frustration
ya, I mean that argument goes both ways
much of that is because you're used to photoshop
I use GIMP pretty often too though. Whenever I need to manipulate images at work, I'm using GIMP
and that's reasonably frequently
sure
regardless, I'm saying that a little UI difficulty is certain worth the price diff

Q: question about proper suitable lenses for CANON 5D mark III

user28392Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Canon EF 75 - 300 mm f/4-5.6 III USM Canon EF 50mm F1.8 II Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS II what your opinion about these lenses? whats your review about all these lenses? should i buy these lenses for my 5D mark III?

@rfusca for 90% of people, yeah
I'd concur with that
I'm not sure that 90% of people wouldn't be served better with a cheaper, simpler product that does what they need easily without having the advanced capabilities of gimp though
(cheaper than photoshop)
obviously not cheaper than GIMP :)
paint .net
18:37
the trick is that when you get in to the people that need the power of GIMP/Photoshop, probably the majority actually do have a reasonable case for having the cost difference be worth it, because it makes their work faster and they are probably doing commercial work in many cases
but if average joe consumer want's to play with powerful tools, gimp is the way to go
oh, if you're doing commercial work - photoshop all the way
esp with the creative cloud pricing
see, there I'd actually disagree
I'd say it isn't worth it at creative cloud pricing
...
creative cloud is infinitely more expensive
and costs more than money
it costs freedom
(I'm vehemently anti CC)
i see
18:40
which is ironic since I work for a SAAS company
well, for small startup businesses - it makes far more sense where their cash flow is low. 50$ a month gets them the full suite of products - not just photoshop. (Unless the outright purchase has come down a lot.)
the only way I would consider CC is if I had a guarantee of future pricing in writing and/or a guarantee of being able to use the software version that was current when I stopped paying.
small businesses are those least able to afford it
it's a small monthly payment, but your entire business depends on it
Adobe effectively has you over a barrel
but you may not be able to even afford to outright buy it
if they decide two years from now to increase the cost to $100 a month, you suddenly go out of business with no access to any of your prior work assets (other than final outputs)
that's not how you run a business if you want to stay in business
now, if they actually offered permanent fixed pricing, I would sign up
because it is worth $50 a month
but not if I don't have a guarentee it will stay there
and the fact they already decided to screw all their existing customers out of their substantial investments doesn't exactly give me warm fuzzies about Adobe's current management's honesty
your argument effectively applies to any SaaS that offers generalized pricing
18:45
I argue against any SaaS that you can't easily replace or migrate away from
if it has generalized pricing
in Adobe's case, it is even worse though because they aren't actually providing any hardware
the normal argument for SaaS is that you don't need your own infrastructure
but CC still requires your own infrastructure
note, if they still had a purchase copy available, then I wouldn't object to a small business using CC
because it offers a transition path if the rental gets too expensive for them
buy one copy, CC others as needed
but when they removed the purchase outright option and went to a perminant rental model while offering nothing more than they had before, they lost all credibility with me
the only reason to move in that direction is to be able to coerce people... period
otherwise purchase and SA makes sense
there is no reason not to offer that as an option other than to be able to screw people in the future
because it looks EXACTLY like the current setup of monthly payments, but offers people an out
they chose to deliberately not offer that
I always assumed it was geared more toward's anti-piracy and students and such. I know TONS of people that had PS pirated because it was crazy expensive, but now are doing CC to get the new versions legally at a reasonable monthly fee
so I guess that's the other half of my anti-CC argument, it puts you over a barrel with a company that has actually demonstrated they have no respect for the businesses of customers
@rfusca it doesn't do anything to stop piracy though
you aren't constantly connected to anything
so it's just as easy to bypass
I'm suggesting there's less of an incentive to pirate
18:53
ah, yeah, but that still doesn't make sense in stopping offering an out
@AJHenderson i suppose
the stated reason is that it was too hard to maintain major and micro releases with patching, but that's a BS excuse. SA is well established.
ya, that sounds shady
SA would be that if you buy the product, you pay for the micro-upgrades if you want to be able to keep upgrading
so - what are you going to do, live with the product you have forever?
what do you do video editing with?
18:55
if they said when they wanted to switch over to CC and said, "hey, you own a copy, we want to make sure everyone always has the latest stuff, so we're going to change to $60 a month to keep software constantly updated and if you ever stop, you can keep the current version, but have to buy again (or pay the missed months) to get caught back up. I would have been OK with it
I use CS6
and will until it no longer functions
btw - Lightworks model is what you like. Its got a monthly or yearly option (only $8 per month) and an option to buy outright.
after that, I'll probably consider Vegas
@AJHenderson obviously there'd have to be some kind of minimum time, otherwise pay 60 one month and then keep it and leave
@rfusca no, that's for if you bought it
I have a full copy of CS6
oic
18:56
so basically either you pay a subscription forever, or you buy it outright and then subscribe for upgrades
that's the Software Assurance model that Microsoft uses
and it works great
it solves the update schedule issue and the predictable income issue while also allowing end users control of their environment
right now, Lightworks is trying to sucker people into buying v11.5 outright at a discount though, since v12 comes in a couple of weeks and you don't get major upgrades on an 'outright' buy
I'm still interested to see what happens to Adobe overall with CC, there are still a lot of people unhappy with it
and I'm sure more will start realizing the risk they are exposed to after the initial pricing finishes
and realize how stuck they are and the fact they'll only get more stuck
most people in the arts field don't really understand the software licensing business model. Meanwhile, I work in that industry
so I understand subscriptions quite well and when they are good and when they are not
our 'tech lead' at church yesterday in our staff meeting was telling my pastor we needed to replace the Mac that runs ProPresenter because it was getting slow because of all the media files we have on it..... at which point I felt the need to point out, that unless its really nearly full (85%+ ... fragmentation, etc) then storage capacity has nothing to do with 'speed'. And then everybody in the room proceeded to tell me I was wrong lol
19:18
haha
also, it was only 12% 'full'...still had nearly 900GB free
oh omy
wonder what was actually slowing it down
I don't think its really 'slower' - our usage and expectations have changed a bit is part of it
it think its perspective issues
they shortened the lyrics that go up on screen, so it requires more frequent changes - which means any delay becomes more noticeable. And its much, much more often playing videos - whereas videos where previously quite rare. So, a minor delay to a start of video goes from a few times a year to a few times a service.
ah, well, atleast the end conclusion is still probably right then
my church just did the rather boneheaded "upgrade" from a mac book to a mac book air
for their ProPresenter system
@AJHenderson lol oh no...you don't know what the actual suggestion was
19:23
I face palmed quite hard
the suggestion wasn't to replace it - that was a faulty phrase on my part.
@rfusca dare I ask?
or was it just wanting more storage?
They want to buy a 'server' to hookup somewhere to serve out the media files
...
.............
...................................................
................................................................................‌.................................................................................‌.................................................................................‌.....................................................
The guy is going through his A+ certs right now. He's got a hammer and the world is a nail. He wants to play with servers.
19:24
I'll get back to you after I pick my jaw up out of the basement it just created
lol
@rfusca sounds more like a D- cert
just sayin
lol
He started going "Well, my trainers said..."
did you manage to convince them a server was not the right choice?
i didn't have any information on the Mac at the moment. After the meeting I sent a note stating that the Mac is only 12% full and that we should define the problem better before we decided that a 'server' is the right solution.
19:28
@rfusca semi-related note. I really want to know who ITT gets their mailing lists from, because they send me stuff saying they think I might like to take their computer courses
So, at this point, its all I can do
@AJHenderson lol
of course, I also get AARP mailings
so apparently, despite the fact that I have my own domain, freely publish my home phone number, birth date and address, in multiple places, there is still horribly bad info about me floating around
I totally think we should have a NAS somewhere on site - for long term, common access storage sake, not to fix performance issues. But a 'server' that is anything more than that is overkill. We don't host or process...ANYTHING.
even google ads can't seem to identify anything about me other than showing me ads for where I work and for products I already own
@rfusca oh wait, do you have no server at all?
for the entire church?
having a real server for a church is actually a good idea. Far better security and regulation of desktops
and after trying a few desktops as servers, we finally broke down and tried a real server and never looked back
@AJHenderson ok, I could understand that. A valid point - but thats not going to address the performance issues.
19:32
no, it will, in fact, make it substantially worse
thats an 'ease of administration' thing.
@AJHenderson oh, for certain
I was just objecting to the thought you only need a NAS
if you don't have a server, the server is a good idea, but it is not being justified properly
the Mac just needs SSDs
most likely
@AJHenderson I don't think that we, in general, have a complex system enough yet to warrant a server for the desktops and stuff - yet. Really, we have a Mac for ProPresentor, a PC for the lights, and a few simple check in terminals. Thats it
though who knows what they'll say when you say you want to give the computer an SSD... they may excommunicate you ;)
lol
19:35
we found it worth it to have a server for as few as 6 desktops for office staff and clergy
@AJHenderson there was a whole discussion where they tried to convince me that external storage (NAS or otherwise) was faster than internal
@rfusca ......................
well, feel free to point out that after checking with the Internet, the Internet and it's $120,000 degree agree with you
lol
and actually, I guess it really would have been even more than that if I'd actually had to pay everything
(I didn't actually have to pay even half that much)
but I still payed around $55k
lol
19:37
but you can say the guy who paid more for a single course than he's paying for his entire training says he is completely wrong
well, you can't put SSDs in the Mac - its one of those sealed all-in-ones
@rfusca ah
what connection options?
probably pre-thunderbolt?
ya, definitely pre-tb
firewire 800?
maybe
19:38
ouch, yeah, no external options then
firewire 800 would possibly be an improvement with an external SSD
thunderbolt or USB3 certainly would be
right
are you sure you can't swap in an SSD?
sometimes those all in ones can still be altered in a few ways
it's just a major pita
the church I did a training event at recently, they ran fiber throughout the entire building for high speed transfers
@AJHenderson its possible
@rfusca even that still won't touch internal though
indeed
but they actually did need external servers and stuff
19:41
yeah, plus fiber doesn't cause/suffer interference
they're streaming video and stuff to other campuses, online, etc
and you can use it for more than Ethernet data
I'd hazard they probably used Fiber for their camera and clearcom feeds too
apparently its possible but lists as 'high skilled only' for replacing the SSD in an iMac
in other words, its possible, but unsupported
anyway, i'm out
(and people wonder why I dislike Mac... you get in to these kinds of situations often enough, it becomes a natural hatred :) )
