7:00 PM
yup. count the number of consecutive .Select calls. More than 2 -> 99% confidence it's macro-recorder code

"Hi, it looks like you used a macro recorder! Can I help you write actual VBA code?"
Clippy may be useful once again!

Maybe I'll start a YouTube channel called "Rubberducking the Macro Recorder" or something like that.

@Comintern If you can make it SFW, I'd salute you.
(no, bleeping it out does not count)

That could prove difficult.
I'd need to find a laugh track too.

7:03 PM
Advice: Use Access. It doesn't have a macro recorder.
:p

or PowerPoint

Access would need a sub-channel for the query designer.

does Excel still expose that old thing MS Query something?
@MathieuGuindon I dread to see a PP application...

Pretty sure it does. I have SSMS installed, so I've never had any inclination to find it in the ribbon.

^ same
athough, 2016 seems to have replaced it with Power Query

7:06 PM
Didn't we discuss the possibility of an RD answer bot for SO at one point?

Pretty the same w/ Access designer. Write a view, and use it in Access. Forget about the silly extraneous ()s it loves to add to everywhere
yeah but TOS
@MathieuGuindon That's why I wondered actually. I assumed by now everyone'd be using that instead of MS Query / whatever

Ah yes, there it is. Data -> From Other Sources -> From Microsoft Query.

#Legacy

Gonna love how great Microsoft is at deprecating things.

> Functionality is limited for compatibility in previous versions
@this #DamnedIfYouDo ... #DamnedIfYouDont

7:09 PM
no kidding
For me my biggest annoyance is how SSMS still insist on using timestamp

I can't imagine there was a mob of MS Query aficionados storming the gates though.

I'd wager that if they worked up the guts to eliminate MS Query, they will get stormed
But.... interview them and they'll say they only have this one odd worksheet with only one query. AND THEY ARE ANGRY

Well it certainly wouldn't be a VB6 -> VB.NET transition...

probably not.

We need an inspection for Else:.

7:18 PM
Shouldn't it be an inspection for usage of colons?

@KySoto if so I wish you the best. Respect each other and work together.
2

GratuitousReferencesToColonsInspection

That too. I was thinking more along the lines of an instruction separator with nothing after it.
@this Ew!

Anything to help cure them of the disease.

We could put it in the Rubberduck.Proctology namespace.

7:20 PM
lol

[rubberduck-vba/Rubberduck] build for commit b3052b74 on unknown branch: AppVeyor build succeeded

That reminds me - where are we w/ CE tests?

I have everything done except the sync tests for folder structure after adds and deletes.

cool. no new bug reports either but ?
i'll install the latest pre-release and see how it goes for me.

Wait until this evening. I refactored my changes to reduce the complexity of the List handling.

7:26 PM

I switched to passing things by ref because there isn't really an efficient RemoveRange method that tests object equity.
@IvenBach "The macro recorder isn’t perfect" might be an understatement. :-D

I wasn't going to merge - just download the latest to see if I can find other bugs
or are you saying that would have likely fixed several more bugs?

I simplified the syncing code, so whatever results you got with what's currently on my branch wouldn't be horribly valid.
I'll push when I get home though.

OK, so I'll ignore any issues w/ sync.

@Comintern I had to start somewhere. It’s my attempt to repositorize teaching moments for co-workers.

7:33 PM
@IvenBach I should do something like that here. I can't tell you how many times I've explained how to do a vlookup.

is there a tool for exporting/importing vbe settings?
I know it's just registry but I'm a bit leery of just blindly exporting a entire subkey from one computer to another

Not that I'm aware of.
It should be fine if you just remember to export the current subkey to a .reg file as a backup first.

7:48 PM
yeah, already on it. I'm going to remove all those fun hex stuff; I only want to export the font & color settings.

That reminds me that I still need to import that borked docking key from #4722.

You'll get to see what wonderful and exciting messages VBE will send to us!

Like WM_CYA_SUCKER?

or WM_JERK_ALERT

8:08 PM
Ok, that's a new record

took Access to Diagon Alley? The Leaky Cauldron doesn't run on Access...
runs on magic, so try PHP+mySQL

lol

resolutions for 2019: reduce daddiness
#Fail and January isn't even over yet

nah, don't
we need more daddiness here.

@IvenBach Something exactly like that. Bookmarked.

I cover all this "Easy" stuff and you write tutorials for all the "Hard" stuff.
Your easy is my hard, all things being relative.

I really see no reason to ever use VLOOKUP.
INDEX + MATCH is just more flexible and less confusing, IMHO.

I prefer LOOKUP personally, but I'm old-school on that.

That one goes way back...

8:15 PM
Well, I did start using Excel seriously around 1995...

It is kind of annoying with VLOOKUP that you cannot look up a value to the left of the search column.

For me, VLOOKUP => time to get a database.

@M.Doerner There's a hack that lets you. Can't remember the link for it.

For me, I'm doing usually doing quick deduplication of csv dumps.

My personal hack is use INDEX + MATCH.

8:17 PM
hmm, yeah looks like I definitely cannot use RD with this one project

Did RD choke on all the bad code?

VLOOKUP is useful for clustering, with the last argument being TRUE.

I'm not even inspecting anything yet. It's still in parsing and it's already bursting at the seam.
This is an application that's been continuously in use & development for 10+ years.

Has it ever been compacted and repaired?

"Continuously in use"? I wouldn't think an Access DB would support that kind of uptime.

8:19 PM
1.99GB.

poor phrasing on my part. I don't mean it's in use 24/7; only that it's used daily by several people.
and besides, it's SQL BE

Is there a good way to find out which code panes are currently open?

wouldn't you get that from VBE.Windows?

Does the window expose the code pane?

IIRC it's a member down further

8:23 PM
NAFAIK; the code pane exposes the window IIRC
wait no, isn't the window tied to the module?

What I really want are the QMNs for all open code panes.

No I'm wrong.

also there could be more than one window open for a given module

Really?

How would that be possible?
Mat is correct - we can get window from the codepane but not hte other way
I'm not sure if the subclassing manager gave a way to map codepane for a given window, though.

8:27 PM
OK, I will leave getting that information for a future enhancement.

@this Did somebody remove that?
The subclassing management associates them.

No, it's only that I don't remember if that information is available or exposed.

You should be able to get the Code Pane from a given window handle from the cache in the SubclassManager.

Q: VB Script for Excel taking very long time to calculate the values

Rohith GowdaI am writing a vb script on excel below is my problem. I have more than 20 sheets in excel and one main sheet (All Programs with 200 names). Each sheet has column with Names and 24months(Jan18 to Dec18, Jan19 to Dec20). Each sheet names is subset of main sheet Main sheet(All Programs) has 200 N...

-_-
i was hoping that i could create a foreign key connecting my application table to the changelog table
but you cant use a composite key in a foreign key situation

@QuackExchange The nested four loops might hint at the problem.

@IvenBach Thanks dude.

10:01 PM
i changed the title for easy filtering . Thank you @m — Rohith Gowda 39 mins ago
edits title to be exactly the opposite of what I said

Looks like he's not a native speaker, or New Jersey schools failed epicly (again).

10:24 PM
hmm.. ok so to clarify then - Cmd is an object reference to the button you're trying to "click"? Is that object owned by another instance of Access.Application? I believe SendKeys used unqualified like this, goes against Application, which would be your "current project" instance - if you can get ahold of the second Access.Application instance, and try invoking SendKeys off that Access.Application object.... — Mathieu Guindon 4 mins ago
@this can an Access VBA project reference another Access VBA project?
AFAIK you can't have two VBA projects opened in Access, so... I'm a bit lost about how that might work

yes, they are commonly known as "library database"
and you'd be wrong RE: not having multiple VBA projects open in Access - that IS possible.

see, I keep talking out of my mug
go help this poor chap!

Duck polling: what would y’all consider is familiarity with DB vs proficiency?
I tend to underestimate my knowledge and want to apply to a job. The DB requirement makes me hesistate in doing so.

10:39 PM
@IvenBach Depends? I consider familiarity to be something like "Oh yeah, Oracle is a type of DBMS". Proficiency would be knowing the quirks that make Oracle different from other DBMS's. Mastery would be the ability to code golf in that DBMS's SQL dialect.
How is the job posting worded?

Familiarity would be able to get work done, looking up how to do it in documentation
While proficient wouldn’t need the documentation, except in odd occasions?

No way. I consider myself proficient with SQL but I always read documentation all the time. I can't commit to the memory every bits and odds about SQL quirks. I would measure the proficiency based on how fast you can find the answer using the documentation.
So if they have a page on say.... ALTER TABLE and go blank.... they are not proficient.

Same here. I consider myself proficient in SQL, but I'm always looking stuff up, especially things I don't use a lot.

That'd put me at pre-proficient.

preficient?

10:44 PM
OTOH, one who can glance at it, quickly jump to the section that's relevant, then look up ALTER COLUMN page and now has a statement composed --- that's much more proficient.
Typing it entirely from memory is arguably impressive but unrealistic in general.

> There's 3 levels of vert prevert, pervert, and provert.
My old man long since mastered being a provert. :p
One job description has: 'Knowledge of Access or other data-entry software.'

LOL "or other data-entry software".

Another job posting has: 'Experience with database entry and design (Access or equivalent)'
Several of these positions revolve around the idea of getting information consolidated.\

I don't consider myself proficient in Access, but I'm certainly familiar enough to get around.
Might take me 3 times as long to create a form or a report, but I could pull it off if I had to.
I think that may be the fundamental difference between the 2 terms.

10:49 PM
opens Tools->References
:(
closes References dialog, reopens from CE
3

@IvenBach I lookup stuff all the time. Delete/Update from join isn't something you "just try and see how it goes" on a production db =)

oh gosh such brave soul you are!
I never could edit data on a production database....
Being a sissy I am, I always use beta....

sometimes you just have to
ok sometimes you script against the test db see it works fine then run it against the prod db
#CowboyWithSafetyNet

After one deletes a table without a backup and lock up a whole department, losing productivity and some substantial amount of money, one becomes very gun-shy.
#TotallyNotSpeakingFromExperience
#HappenedToAFriendIKnow

@this Ouch

10:58 PM
backups are king

I've done stuff like that before.

audit tables are boss

@KySoto more importantly --- working backup

yeah, true

If I do get interviewed and they ask about experience.

10:58 PM
(I actually did take a backup but I botched that up.... soo.....)

we have been recovering from SQL server backups for a while now

Last instance was a stupid drag and drop error in a share I wasn't supposed to have RW access in. I accidentally move a folder into another folder when I tried to double click on it and didn't even notice.

That was years ago. Still haunts me.

> I've experienced them before. I found out the hard way to not try anything on a prod first time around.

O_O

10:59 PM
Ooo that's scary. "I thought I done made the backup!" and not even know about it.

generally speaking, the only databases i dont write data directly to are our production databases
since the stuff i normally work with is tracability stuff

@KySoto unless you're a consultant called in to put out the fire for a company that has no IT department and everything is going to hell in a handbasket.

Knowing that even the #Experts can get it wrong gives me hope.

oooh, a funny anecdote for you!
That was relayed to me from one of my old employer.
He was called on site to help out a customer with designing a report for a some thing to do with RPG (no, not a generic of game, a programming language. Predates SQL)

The ones that are the most fun are rebuilding .NET source code from a decompiled executable after you forgot to push it and rolled back two or three weeks worth of work.

11:02 PM
@this not going to lie, thats why ive never consulted for anyone

so the customer explained what they wanted and were quite very apprehensive -- after all they had this expensive mainframe working like clockwork and there were lot of processes that revolved around this, ok?
He went, "Don't worry! I'm an expert at this!"
Starts working on the report.

didnt backup the report...

Does something (he didn't recall what) and everything went down

everything explodes...
FFFFFFUUUUU!!

Since then, he has never called himself an expert - preferring to say "I'll do my best".

11:04 PM

I think that's a great advice. Call yourself "expert", you gonna be like that ^

yeah... people call me that, and im like... really, im secret trash
but im better then all of yall

I'm not an expert. Really the only difference that sets me apart from you is I've failed a lot more at it than you have.

lol
i have a reasonable amount of experience sighting traps in code...

Co-workers think I'm an Excel-Guru. Nope. Just willing to learn enough to automate my work.

11:07 PM
but then again, im equivalent to a level 3 rogue in the art
lol @IvenBach , the secret is... you are lazy
you dont wanna manually do crap you dont have to do

Be safe mug.

well.. thats how it is for me anyway
he out? later man

I tell everyone openly I'm lazy, just not slothgful.

ive spent many months doing work that reduces how much time it takes to build apps
really ive probably saved a good 60% due to that work
or even more, since im just spitballin it
instead of spending 10% of my time on research, finding out exactly how i need to build stuff and get everything they need, i spend closer to 80% of my time on research
well those are also spit balled
but everyone is happy, and im not overworking myself
so i dont feel burnt from my job

11:12 PM
:+1:

i guess to summarize it, i follow the scotty rule, but to allow myself to follow that rule, it took a lotta hard work building up an infrastructure. that infrastructure isnt as good as what you guys could do, but i also am trying to keep it comprehensible to the other people who use it.

Work for your customer. If they're not happy you may not be employed.

Because ive had some of the functions that i make set up.. not quite all the way how you guys would do it, but closer, and it totally befuddled some of my fellow programmers
it took a minute to get them to use it
but they really didnt get it
it was a... well i trust that you know what you are doing... so i guess i'll use it, kinda deal

so I spent most of my day trying to troubleshoot native library binding issues...

@IvenBach Thats a good way to do it, I've always tried to make it programmer complex, user easy.
so i validate the living piss out of hte data before it goes anywhere

11:17 PM
turns out the folks I sent the PR to were happy with me just skipping that part of the code entirely, sooo ...

reference other data etc
oooooofff

obtw @this I might go and rework deployment sometime soon-ish

and they just scan a label, and they are 90% good to go. all they have to do is usually put in some quantity or whatever

@Vogel612 There there vogel. We've all been there.

Yea it's kinda fun to contribute to a library that you plan to extensively use for a sideproject to ease management on a sideproject (which is RD)

11:18 PM
@Vogel612 Cool - what did you have in mind?

Rewrite using Cake

hmm never heard of Cake.
what does that buy us?

Buys us build configuration in C# and native tasks

one day i will get the competence and confidence to contribute to a library

should allow us to completely separate Deployment from all the other projects

11:20 PM
Nice. Will the build task be redone?

AIUI it's compatible with MSBuild Tasks, so... not necessarily

As long it works for both local building and AV building, I'm happy.
the deployment would have been helluva much easier if I only care about AV building but we need to make sure contributors can build locally with the same settings....
can't wait to see what you'll do with it! :)

Check out this file that's where the magic happens
not even 100 lines that tie together the whole build process
And I'm pretty sure we won't need remotely as much because we're not doing multi-targeting or multiple packages or version overrides or linking native binaries
sooo ...

> This service is a provides access to the active selection and selection of individual modules without involving COM wrappers directly; the interface only uses QMNs and selections.

It is currently not used anywhere. Future PRs might change that.

11:42 PM
> buildSystem.AppVeyor.IsRunningOnAppVeyor;
I like that!

yea, they're running on appveyor and travis

yeah I saw.

they determine versions automatically by parsing git tags
it's just... lots of fancy stuff

but how does it work w/ the local build, exactly?
it doesn't require one to have an extension in VS or something like that, right?

nope
it's basically a standalone app that handles the build process

11:44 PM
so we still can do Project -> Build like we normally can?

yep
it just calls MSBuild under the hood
For example here

I figured but I was more curious about how VS knows that it should call out ot Cake rather than MSBuild

now that's something that I would need to find out, actually...

not clear whether the extension is needed for the 2nd part of the page.
it sounds like build.cake would be all is needed to bind the VS' command to those tasks but ?

yea, that's a bit confusing...
