Q: My friends' weird puzzle

apphxI've tried solving this by myself and I genuinely cannot wrap my head around it, I'm fairly certain it's HEX code (since the characters don't go past the letter "f") but no matter what I decrypt HEX to it just gives me the same mess of text: G}2ùr¶ÿÂ+P×.¡ *×à½}IA ä)a/0ðÆËÝ<mÀ[´á>î"æ×ÕdÂij [9ôcï³...

I've been thinking "etc playing below" means an anagram of ETC below either "pitcher" or "playing ... leagues", but the only promising ending is ECT, and the words it ends don't seem to fit the wordplay. Not sure though

Random note: I'm editing the CCCC archive and I've now reached the start of the "Ms. Fanning" series of clues. I'm still ever-so-slightly bummed that I didn't get to solve a single one of those clues, lol

And while I'm on the topic of CCCC's...

PSA: C4 Archive has been updated to the start of the year. Volunteers happily invited to take a turn at doing the next one/two/six days/weeks/months...
Same announcement as above, but this time it has been updated to the start of 2021! No one has any obligation to continue the updating, but again volunteers are welcome. :0000

Q: A crossword with no clues?

Beastly GerbilThis crossword doesn't appear to have any clues... or does it? Solve the crossword to get a bonus puzzle, and find the final word to describe the crossword! Google Sheets Link

@oAlt FYI, simon from cracking the cryptic just posted a solve for this on youtube
12:37
interesting! I actually saw the notif pop up but I didn't know what specific crossword he was gonna do. Looks like it's gonna be worth watching which I'll indeed do later

Visiting the "Minor League Baseball" Wikipedia page for like the nth time lol

Q: I need help with this IQ test puzzle I found online

SeptaCubeThis puzzle is part of the Monthly Topic Challenge #2: IQ Puzzle Parody What's missing?

14:44
Apparently P can stand for pitcher... Hmm not sure if that's relevant at all
Oh wait, I think I'm gonna have an attempt at this
@juicifer is the answer PROSPECT, &lit? Pitcher = P, and ECT is "etc playing", and that's all below the major leagues, which are (not sure on this part) basically the PROS because they're more experienced than the minor leagues. And a pitcher or other kind of baseball player playing below the major leagues is a prospect too, since they can be promoted to a more advanced team (including the major leagues themselves).
@oAlt that's exactly it!
using "pros" to refer to the major leagues is fairly common, especially when the minor leagues are involved
even though minor league ballplayers are still professional
Ooh
CCCC: One's rounded off: squared constant term halved and finally divided into 4? (12)
(As opposed to being divided by 4)
@juicifer great clue
@oAlt nicely solved, especially since you seem unfamiliar with the usages involved
14:59
Thanks, that's true ahahah
@oAlt is 12 the clue’s enumeration or the answer to the arithmetic problem?
@msh210 thanks!
@msh210 hehe ((jic this isn't actually in jest it's the enumeration lol))
15:23
@oAlt I guess "One’s rounded off squared" can clue quadrise*? Not entirely sure how. And then the rest is C te_ _d
@msh210 you're on the right track :D
15:41
(just to be explicit, I'll wait for the actual parsing, since I intended "One's rounded off: squared" to be parsed in a certain way)
16:20
@oAlt I mean it looks to me like it's I (one) rounded by quadrse* (squared, off)
personally I think that transaction should be the other way around given the way you have it
16:59
@juicifer Correct :00 were you referring to the "off squared"? I also considered that that should be the other way round, but I think having the colon there makes it fine
no "off squared" is fine
Ahh
I was talking about "x rounded y" to mean "x inside of y"
What transaction were you referring to
Ohh
normally I would think that would be "y inside of x"
i.e. x going around y
17:01
I get what you mean but I can explain that :0
I intended "One's rounded" to be parsed separately, like [One's rounded] [off squared ... into 4]
yeah I get what you were going for it's just a little awkward syntactically
it can be tough trying to balance surface syntax with cryptic syntax lol
@juicifer Fair point. I think Deusovi implied that as well with one of my cryptic clues (afaik he said that "British aircraft are unnaturally overpowered way after" = AER* + OP + LANE (way after) isn't so great since it should be "with way after" for it to be syntactically correct in the wordplay.)
Personally I don't see any issue with it, but I'll keep an open mind and consider it for a time
yeah at the end of the day the clue was still solvable, so it's not a big deal
:0
speaking of which I think @msh210 should take the next one since he basically got it
17:09
^ same, was about to say he got the answer and a part of the wordplay which I think is significant enough
17:39
Okay, after staring at msh's explanation long enough I now see what the answer is. (I guess I was tripped by the "quadrise" part which I stubbornly read as the Brit variant of an -ize verb.)

Q: Which of these is the answer?

juiciferThis puzzle is part of the Monthly Topic Challenge #2: IQ Puzzle Parody I've been playing around with my favorite IQ puzzle app, and I got to this 5x5 that's completely stumped me. Can you figure out whether the answer is A, B, C, or D?
