@AncientSwordRage yep!
Wait, you didn't specify the wordplay.

12:31 AM
@msh210 (recipe)*
Apologies for that

The recipe→ pierce connection was so instant I ended up just focusing on finding the right Franklin 🤷🏻‍♂️

2:09 AM
Franklin Franklin is his name :)

So many Franklins in history

@msh210 the word play was correct, wasn't it?

2:58 AM
can't see how it wouldn't be

2 hours later…
4:38 AM
@AncientSwordRage yes, naturally. I just wanted to cross all the i's and dot all the t's

5:24 AM
(And sorry for the delay. I was afk.)

6:01 AM
9 more days till my first gold badge.

CCCC: Potter's work shy (5)

9:19 AM
@msh210 the ɨ's and the ṭ's, that is

1 hour later…
10:24 AM
@Jafe indeed

@AncientSwordRage I feel this might be a little sloppy (not on the level of indirect anagrams etc) so handle with care

@AncientSwordRage Is this a ddef for THROW? i.e. A potter throws using a wheel, and also 'shy' as in a coconut shy at a fair.

10:40 AM
@Stiv YES
I'm glad it wasn't too tricky
but yes, I could have cleared up the throws/throw disparity before posting

Haha, no not too tricky. Just had to split the phrase between the right two words and think a little. You very nicely chose three words which had a different natural split for the surface of course :)

10:54 AM
I liked how short I managed to make it

@AncientSwordRage nice clue

11:30 AM
CCCC: Lawn in a mess after illegal party around Charlie's house (9)

@Stiv RAVE + N(C)LAW*

@Jafe Absolutely - very quick!

is a rave necessarily illegal, though?

This one was...

heheh

11:35 AM
Seriously, that lawn - ugh, I wouldn't want to be the one cleaning that up...

presumably that's charlie's problem now

Sucks to be Charlie!

CCCC: Charlie's tea party's beginning; nothing left after that (7)
not sure if this is the same charlie... i assume there are people who attend both raves and tea parties

@Jafe CHAPLIN = CHA (tea) + P(-arty) + NIL<

that's right
chaplin seems more like a tea party kind of guy

12:08 PM
The epitome of a tea party dude...

@msh210 thanks

12:24 PM
CCCC: Charlie's dad takes a peek... (7)

This might be helpful...

12:44 PM
...or it might not...

what are the odds someone else has a son named charlie

1:45 PM
@Jafe According to my calculations: The word CHARLIE has 7 letters, one of them includes the letter E which is the most used letter in the dictionary. The letter E has a probability of 87% to appear in a word. Meanwhile, the first letter, C, is the third letter in the alphabet, and when thinking up a name this is an easy letter to use, coming with a 75% probability.
7 letters however, decreases the probability by 40%. And also, the appearance of 3 vowels in the word decrease it by 60%. Not to mention, two of the vowels are in a row, decreasing the probability by a sliver of 7%. So, the odds are: 87+75-40-60-7=95%
Satisfied? ;)

let's say yes

Lol

Q: What is the next number of the sequences?

FuxiaoWhat is the next number and why? 3,7,10,11,12,17,?

2:50 PM

I think you might know the answer too :)

This question was found by her mother as an after-class exercise. We have already known the answer is 20 but don’t understand that because of the cultural difference. Because it seems like a logical question from the process, but we are Asians. So I found this website to seek help:) — Fuxiao 3 hours ago
Theoretically, this could still be bait. The homework could be "Explain why X", maybe even giving the next term 20. But I think it's unlikely enough to justify enlightening them in the comments :)

@LukasRotter Given it's just a sequence, the reason we think it's 20 might be different to the teacher's reason

It's pretty unlikely, but yeah.
I don't find any other matches on OEIS, fwiw

@LukasRotter oh yeah, but if the kids learning about X, and the teacher puts in the helpful context of X, we might confuse matters

6:50 PM
It's great you are reaching out and using this site, but in this specific incidence, you may be better off asking the teacher to explain the answer and the reasoning behind it. Not least of all because there could be many reasons behind the answer, or a context only the teacher is aware of. — Pureferret 28 mins ago

@AncientSwordRage From the sounds of their response this isn't a teacher-set homework but more something extra provided by their mum as a little extra optional work... I think a gentle prod in the right direction where they do the rest of the work isn't a bad thing, so I've given a pointer...
