Q: Make numbers from 1-10 with 5 3s

user71981In this puzzle book, I came across a question that goes like this: Make the numbers from 1-10 using 5 3s. Rules: You are only allowed to use the four basic arithmetic operators($+, -, \times, \div$). You are allowed to use brackets. Here is what I have so far: I have not figured out the rest...

it's SS(SSS)SSS, obviously
06:06
I feel I'm looking at the wrong word, but BYSSUSES? Wikipedia says that that one's been used to wrap mummies, which if you ask me aren't far from being "crude people" (???). However, other than the "Yellow" and the "Layer of eggs on the outside", the wordplay just refuses to cooperate.
and on top of that it's not apt to pluralize "byssus" like that at all...
06:47
@Sciborg yes definitely, that is totally a real word

2 hours later…
09:01
If the def is "rocks" then CRYSTALS and FLYSCHES match the hints. But I don't see how either matches the wordplay.
(Also, both have Y. :-) )
@oAlt Also if that were it there'd probably be a better word to use in the clue than "crude".
09:22
That's true

aandd here goes another module with another xkcd comic
11:23
@oAlt I don't know what "module" you refer to, but that xkcd keyboard is how I imagine Deusovi's
("ᠠ? yeah, I've got a key for that")
@Deusovi (somewhat rude to talk about someone without a ping. have one.)
ha, not quite - though i am interested in a custom keyboard layout at some point
(also, funnily enough, i was typing up a response right when you pinged me)
12:20
hmm... CATSEYES are rocks (gemstones) and that has E for eroding head, Y for yellow plus E_S for layer of eggs
not sure how decor of crude people would clue CATS or what "on the outside" is doing
actually ES could maybe be "layer of eggs on the outside"
12:44
@jafe crude people could be "crude 'people'" i.e. slang for "people" = CATS, but that doesn't explain decor
(also, I'm unfamiliar with catseyes meaning gems. First thing I think of is the road marker, though I also know marbles and a nebula.
13:00
)
13:56
@msh210 to clarify: you don't know what "module" means in this sense, or just what specific type of module it is?
also never thought of it that way, but i won't be surprised if deus eventually comes to obtain such a keyboard

14:22
@oAlt I'm… not sure. I thought you were referring to something as being as module with an xkcd panel, but I didn't know what that something was. But maybe I misunderstood you altogether.
14:45
Noun: catseye (plural catseyes)
  1. Alternative spelling of cat's eye...
Ugh, never knew it would be a valid alternative spelling D:
@msh210 Ah, I meant module (sense 3.a.2). I'll provide further context: the subject from where that module belongs basically teaches us ways of designing, creating, and making things. The module I mentioned was tackling the Prototype stage of the design thinking process, which was why the XKCD was there. :0

Q: Another Zodiac Killer Puzzle

George Barwood This is a multi-part puzzle concerning the Zodiac Killer "Pines" card sent to the San Francisco Chronicle on March 22, 1971. Q: Delivery triangles

John Wiltshire-GordonYou drive a delivery truck between warehouses in a large number of cities. On a typical day, you drive a triangle: starting at warehouse X, driving to Y, then Z, then back to X. Yeah
Math SE routes it here? Ugh
I'm guessing "hobby maths" in the form of puzzles doesn't fit the Math.SE criteria
almost need a SE devoted to problems that lie in the intersection between Math.SE and PSE
Eh, I don't think it'll be very popular
HobbyMathematics SE?
something like that - watch it become the most popular SE site :P jk
At least we'd have a quick and easy way to dump all of our math-problem-that-people think-is-a-puzzle posts to
Not our problem anymore :P

Q: Is an "Undeclared SE" site a good idea?

There should be a default site for migrate these questions when its not clear that a site exists where the questi...

another attempt
I like this response: "It's not about asking good questions. It's about getting good answers."
but then I also think that some SE's (not ours, we're definitely in 1 answer territory) would benefit more from having opinion-based answers and letting the up/down vote system decide community consensus
not all good questions have a single answer
unless they're puzzles... :)
Even then, there could be multiple interesting solution paths to show
rofl I started looking at Deus' CCCC and now I'm reading about Porphyry on Wikipedia :P
19:38
@bobble I need some help, are you free?
for a bit - lunch may be soon
I'll be in the grove
Okay
@merrybot Yeah, but one circle allowing both clockwise and counter-clockwise would give you more words. So, e.g. OTSP in a circle allows SPOT, STOP, POTS. and TOPS. — Darrel Hoffman 2 days ago
that's not how rotations work. and those are just anagrams.
no wait, hold on
OTSP -> POTS -> SPOT -> TSPO -> OTSP
hm
20:23
i think the idea is that you're allowed to read in either direction
20:57
@Dmihawk to be clear, the brackets are not relevant to the actual clue solving in any way, just showing that two previous CCCCs are nested in this one
21:37
oh are they previous CCCCs? interesting!
21:56
yep! the innermost one was Ankoganit's (ddef CHICKEN), and then my previous one was the next layer out ( Y+Y around (-f)OLK = YOLKY = "of eggs")
