Come to the dark light side...
gah, how to make strikeouts work?
@LukasRotter if I understood correctly, it varies. Sometimes I use either :o or :0 or :O, and (in general) the more o's/0's/O's I have, the more I am surprised.
and admittedly, there are three possible reasons why I use it: 1) I am genuinely surprised/amused, 2) I can't think of anything else to say in response, or 3) I want to somehow lighten the mood
what would you use to darken the mood?
00:17
@bobble ? It worked just fine. I'm on mobile, though, but idk if that matters
@bobble no emoji at all... Or this ∎ :P
If you look in the edit history, I changed it from using <s></s> to the working markup
@oAlt DARKNESS. NO PARENTS.
@bobble ah
@bobble I cannot comprehend what this means ;_; :P
Lego Movie reference. Batman has a ridiculously dark rock theme that he wrote for himself
ahhhh
pouts I like when people get my references
Let's try some more...
"There was some important stuff hidden in the waffle"
"We have a small but dedicated fan base"
00:24
(I'm pretty sure I've watched the first Lego Movie, but I don't remember that part of Batman D: )
those two are a bit obscure, let's see if anyone gets them
plus they're from memory I could have gotten the specifics wrong :)
Ngl the second one sounds like every small-scale YouTuber ever
the actual quote is from my favorite TV show in the history of my life (which is, I mean, not that long)
@bobble the thumbnail that first displayed made me remember a bit more, so, epic
intrsting
what's interesting?
00:36
@bobble (this. I still don't know what the show is, though. :0 )
00:57
Upon consideration, the second one may be "active" or "loyal". I'll check
It's "active". My bad.

for crossword clues: how to notate an entry which is has a common abbreviation, but then extends it with a common suffix as if it were a regular word?
I feel like it should be abbr., but it's not entirely abbr
uh, that seems like a weird entry
you mean something like "P.O.'ed" (meaning "angry")? I'd be fine with it going either way
@bobble replace "duct tape" with "flex tape" and that would be phil swift

kaitlynmm569 My prefix is about My infix wants to learn My suffix wants to get things done My whole is a redecoration

As long as people keep posting these Riley Riddles, I will have more downvotes ready. 😠
That sounded really hostile... I just really dislike them! They're cheap puzzles that don't require much effort to make.
14:02
@Voldemort'sWrath I was getting tired of them, too, so posted one that pokes fun at them.
lol
A quick search leaves me speechless. There are so many rileys that I'm surprised there isn't a tag [riley]. Related tags: [low-effort]
Apparently a tag was proposed and rejected. I don't know why. I didn't read the discussion and perhaps there are good arguments against, but prima facie it's a kind of puzzle just like connect-wall or maze is a kind of puzzle and can have its own tag (especially with so many questions).
14:19
The main argument was that all Riley Riddles were riddles, and that we don't create sub-tags for Puzzling trends. An example used was the What is a _tm Word puzzles, which don't have a sub-tag and are instead all [word-property]
Seems very strange. If connect walls become a site trend, then we'll have to untag them all connect-wall and make them word-property instead? But whatever, I have no horse in this race.

one of my teachers requires, for a letter of rec, that both the student and parent write 1-page long letters of rec
@bobble ... What
I really like him, and I know he writes great letters of rec, but... aggh
Ok what does that even mean?
How do you write rec for yourself?
You write a letter of rec, in the third person, extolling your own accomplishments
Oh my God
is that a thing people normally do?
because it sounds hilarious
14:47
@bobble Tf
For college it's apparently fairly common for students to write their own letters and have a professor just sign it
(according to my dad, who would know since he was a professor)
Huh, okay
@bobble Lmao
I just realized that you could google that text and find my school, so I deleted it. :) Please don't try
Oh I didn't even read the full text lol
14:50
@bobble I can kinda get behind this since the end result is effectively same as a professor writing rec for you, except it's less work for the prof
I don't see the point of writing about yourself in the third person, if it's not supposed to be passed for something a third person wrote
The teacher doesn't require it for summer-program letters of rec, which is what I've used asked him for before
He does require a resume even for summer programs, however. So I have a resume.
Resume makes sense
@bobble Wait that's what my music teacher basically has us do
My profs usually ask for a CV before writing recs for easy reference
who tf is balazs?
ok nvm

also, is there a "Lateral Thinking community"?
I've heard of a society of true thinkers before. Maybe there's a society of false thinkers, too?
Yeah but it's pretty secret. I've hread they always meet at night, dance around a flame, and only think and talk laterally
They don't dance around the flame, that's what you would expect them to do! No, they dance in the flame, and sometimes below and above if they're feeling like it.

very good point
I've voted to close as I can think of a lot of other answers
I like the idea of selling them for $3 and then adding $10 shipping

the two "$" signs could be different currencies that both use that symbol
that's the first thing I came up with at least
Thats actually very clever

16:06
@msh210 The 4-7 means that it's word-hyphen-word right?
Okay some I'm thinking "big" is the definition; could LDS (Latter-Day-Saint) be an acronym for Mormon?
@Deusovi^
absolutely could be
Ok. I didn't know if LDS was like the correct possible abbreviation
hm maybe "mission" is the definition. if it's [big bore]-[prepared Mormon]. I can't see anything for mission that would come after a word like "LDS"; though albeit this may not be a good strategy

Q: Help me with my friends code?

GrandpaMy friend has asked me to decrypt his code but I haven’t been given any clues and I was looking to see if any one could help me crack it. The code is: ╔á╔ª56╔áãÆ╔á╔ª56╔áãÆãÆ45╔áÓ½«2ãÆ45╔áÓ½«2╔ôÓ½«ÎÉ6ÔêéãÆ╔ôÓ½«ÎÉ6ÔêéãÆÎÉãÆ64ã¡Ó©úÎÉãÆ64ã¡Ó©úÓ©ú╔áãÆ4╔ªãÆO...

- sees new questions with [cipher] tag - gets excited - hopes its not "heres a code. can you crack it" - it is
@LukasRotter I don't understand how to solve those
they're just like
random strings of letters and symbols like wut
This one might be a substitution <- my first thought
@LukasRotter Ooh someone who likes ciphers...
was just about to say. If it's not something simple or known - good luck solving some obscure homebrew cipher and actually wanting to do that
21:17
@bobble I think you might be right.
@NorthLæraðr Yes. Is that a rarity? xD
@LukasRotter Kinda lol
Deus doesn't really like em
But those are the main type of puzzles I post
My favorite book in my 3rd grade teacher's classroom was about simple ciphers - so I like those, the kind that are easy to crack but fun to pass notes in
@Sphinx The problem with this cipher is that I don't know what the letters are if they are substitution
Of the starboard messages I can see right now, 3 are from msh (all CCCC-related), 2 are from me, and 1 is from John.
21:25
To confirm the suspicion with the substitution: There are exactly 26 different characters in the string
The moral of the story: I'm in second place. Curse you, msh210!
@LukasRotter, should I comment for the OP to tell them?
I presume it will be solved soon
While the letter distribution is suggestive, the patterns are very weird to me - so many repeated substrings
although the distribution is also a bit over the top if you ask me
@bobble I've now canceled the stars against my older C4.
Ah hah! I'm winning!
21:45
I think Beastly Gerbil might have started a new trend
Beastly Riddle
whyyy.... we do not need more template riddles
The funny thing is the gimmick with "with {number} I am" is completely useless now, since everyone knows that letter indices are meant (unless someone deliberately tricks the puzzler)
