Q: What is the question?

Dmitry KamenetskyThe answer to this puzzle is 18. What could be the question that led to this answer?

01:49
fancy uh random TTS thing if anyone cares: text-to-speech-demo.ng.bluemix.net
@Alconja Sounds like some Gothic literature if you ask me
@NorthLæraðr a bit older than that... ;)
@Alconja Fine, it's A Tale of Two Cities except Lucie proposes to Carton instead
Hmm, thinking outloud here
Perhaps a worplay indicator is capture? Like to surround?
Maybe def is early? Can't find a word that could do something with victorian ring
Ring--> O?
02:20
@NorthLæraðr hm you have 4747 rep.... hm I'm a trekkie... hm 47 is the mystical star trek number... hm
@merrybot I'm a tree
uh ok...
what does that mean exactly?
it means im a tree
what does that have to do with 4747?!
It means I'm a tree
02:25
BUT WHAT DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH 4747!
tries calming down
Ooh, early victorian period is also known as the Romantic period
yes hm
@merrybot It has to do with the fact that I'm a tree ;)
AGGGGGHHHHH
i am going to make you explode then, Mx. Tree
I should go downvote an answer so it says 4746
02:26
it'll still have a 47 in it though mwahahaha
you'd have to downvote 101 answers
and that wouldnt exactly be nice
hm
OR I CAN POST SPAM ANSWERS AND GET DOWNVOTED MYSELF
how do trees even think?
@merrybot We are very sophisticated creatures, unlike ye humans
101 spams though? geez
@merrybot Nah, each downvote is I think -2 reps
02:28
is that why we left africa?
@merrybot No, but that's why people are cutting down the trees in the Amazon.
They are afraid of our power
where are you, mx. tree?
not in the amazon i hope?
@merrybot Mr. is fine, and I'm currently a Californian tree
Not a palm one though
They're a little too wavy in my opinion
just trying to be gender neutral over here btw
02:31
also can i just type North Laeradhr?
(ae = æ, dh = ð)
@merrybot Just North is fine lol
just dropping by to confirm that a downvote indeed takes away 2 rep
@oAlt Cool
ok. "random interruption"
If I downvote an answer once, and get downvoted 50 times, I'll be perfect!
02:32

2 hours later…
07:24
@u_ndefined Yes, some state of Cube puzzle is possible to solve.
Oh... um. No, not every state of Cube puzzle is possible to solve. As a simple example, if there are more colored faces on the floor than sides of the cube -- that's not solvable. However, it's entirely possible that every state of Cube puzzle that is generated on that site is solvable: I don't know that.

@merrybot Are you somebody's sock? Or a new user? At first I thought you were someone's second "bot" account, given your username and apparent familiarity with chat. But now you seem to have a life of your own :-P
19:28
@Randal'Thor I am not a bot! "merrybot" is actually an idea for an Xmas bot my friend and I came up with. Apparently he has infinite knowledge...
Everyone is a bot. It's just some run on wetware, some on chip.
Besides how do bots get 255 rep in like a month and a half?
Interesting idea, @Dvorak...
(not the keyboard though)
The keyboard is great!
Do cyborgs count? Asking for someone else who is really invested in this
Gives you a great retort when somebody points out that A and Z aren't very far apart.
19:30
@merrybot Well, I thought someone might have started a second account, got enough rep on it to use chat, and planned to use it for maybe one of the chatroom puzzle games or something.
Cyborgs are modded humans.
ffao has a bot-sock with some rep, IIRC.
I see, I see *takes notes*
The modding API is complex and undocumented, but that hasn't stopped people from trying.
There's also the FITALY kbd which even though it claims to be the most efficient, it actually isn't.
19:32
directly adjacent isn't the only thing that matters.
True but the question does say that is a requirement
Also there is a left-handed Dvorak and a right-handed Dvorak
really. hm
@JohnDvorak Humans are cyborged mods.
@Randal'Thor I suppose the ultimate cyborgs out there have to be Star Trek's Borg...
19:35
those are psyborgs, not cyborgs
what is that, exactly?
> A cyborg (/ˈsaɪbɔːrɡ/), a contraction of "cybernetic organism", is a being with both organic and biomechatronic body parts.
a psyborg would be a cyborg with telepathic communication capabilities
that's a thing?!
not to be confused with telepathetic communication, which has the range of touch.
or its just called "a bunch of cyborgs in a hive mind"
19:38
What are humans that are disassembled and reconstructed by nanobots then?
(pardon my word choice)
Hive mind species is one that has the capability natively. Psyborg is one that has the capability given by an augment.
I assume, @Adam, that you mean nanoprobes.
technical terminology
Method of creation is irrelevant, only the final result counts.
I suppose so, @keyboard :)
The ends justifies the means
19:40
Look what I've started...
Only if you can erase the memory of the past.
That is apart of the plan
apart, or a part?
Not necessarily. We kind of already are cyborgs.
I propose we don't call them augments until they're better than the originals.
19:43
Makes sense but uh has anyone made any progress on my newest puzzle? :)
I've said too much
Forget all of this
oh, a puzzle? Scrolls furiously up
oh and yes if you're wondering I am claustrophobic IRL
20:04
uhh hello?

hello
any progress?
nope
haven't looked at it after the first day - it seems like we just have to randomly guess what you've done to that image
and with no text transcription of the image, it's tedious to do even one manipulation
i didn't because it's too tedious even for me to do it! sorry bout dat
20:12
So why do you expect us to?
sigh nevermind
Anyway, I haven't looked at it because I'm really not interested in playing "guess the transformation".

Q: Code Puzzles: What (Not) To Do?

Lopsy Here's a code. Can you crack it? fw8904730983kf89023ncweamnfiope20tmi9b6m89ny327nery895mbi9tm0ei09x2e1m3y8n2 Good luck! When a puzzle looks like this… AUGH. I believe that the main purpose of this site, apart from entertainment and sharpening our puzzle-solving skills, is learning...

Your puzzle isn't (necessarily) a code, but a lot of the advice there still applies.
@merrybot has left the chat. Literally.
... for 5 minutes.
20:29
@merrybot Deusovi makes an important point here. You've got to look at it from the solver's perspective. When I look at that image I think even if I knew the decoding method, it would probably take me days to decode.
Right.
