beware of hilarity

02:09
to be fair, it doesn't load on mobile :((
hm weird
i did share it so..
what exactly does it say?
well and you have to have a keyboard so sorry bout dat
ummm let's see if i can fix that
ok there @oAlt now try it
ok I tried it again and it took me to scratch now
like it?

Q: The ceiling function and powers of 2

Culver KwanHow many integers $1\le x\le2048$ such that $$\Big\lceil \frac x{2^n}\Big\rceil$$ is not a multiple of five for all nonnegative integers $n$? This problem is a 2020 contest problem which has finished.

02:24
@merrybot yea HAHA
fave part?
It's a tough one
But I gotta say it's the one with the pillow lol
yeah same here. i also like the "very confusing calendar" one
and how did the library get arreated?!
agh *arrested
hehehe
and wtf is HIV-19-SARS-VOC-2 ?!!
02:33
A very deadly strain indeed
ahaha
what should my next "translator fails" hting be?
I can't think of any suggestions hmm
me neither...... h m m
thinking
ah yes of course!
the 13th longest wikipedia article
which is about... soil
unless you have a better idea?
Indeed I have none, oof
much oof
oh and if you're wondering the first sentence turns into... translating in progress
"This world is a mixture of minerals, minerals, air, water and life."
hmm not much better
02:44
yea only has twice the minerals
ah now what!
nothing much
The world is affected by minerals, water, water and life.
getting somewhere I see
(please don't say life life)
i totally didnt expect that reaction

Q: Monks in a temple

Prim3numbahTry somehow make sense of the image below. All the necessary information to solve this puzzle is there. Good luck!

if you're wondering, i coded a thing to translate randomly into one of 27 languages and back, 225 times.
@oAlt some things you can't predict: "Minerals, water, water and biodiversity affect the world."
good job google translate~
"pedosphere" --> "auxilliary temperature" ? help my brain
lolol
wait, never heard that word before
ok wow
second sentence got me this:
"This place is called this place, there are four types"
yea sure
This Place
you're a funny one
02:55
:p
ok now i'm doing the first three sentences under the "water" section.
input:
"Soil moisture refers to the water content of the soil. It can be expressed in terms of volumes or weights. Soil moisture measurement can be based on in situ probes or remote sensing methods."
output (woah):
"Soil moisture causes soil moisture. Data size and storage. You can adjust or adjust the humidity of the container."
ahaha
paraphrasing 100
This Place ... Soil Moisture ... Adjust or Adjust...
Round 3:
input:
"Water affects soil formation, structure, stability and erosion but is of primary concern with respect to plant growth."
output:
"Water contributes to marine pollution, hidden buildings and drought. There are no plants in the plant."
AHAHA
Water bad
Google Translate is very meta lately...
03:01
We must make an effort to stop the water from creating hidden buildings
yep, guess so. and how are there no plants in the plant... GT is fricking my brain
ROUND FOUR::
input:
"In addition, water alters the soil profile by dissolving and re-depositing minerals, often at lower levels."
output:
"In addition, the mineral water melts and produces a large amount of soil, thus altering the soil."
uh yeah how does water melt!
"thus altering the soil" technically it ain't wrong LOL
technically yes
but how does water melt!
aight, time for a challenge round! guess the input for this output:
"Without hydrogen, hydrogen atoms in the sea will accelerate."
i repeat: GUESS THE INPUT
shame I can't cheat
HAHA
haha
just take a stab at it!
ok ifne you can cheat
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soil
find the sentence...
03:08
"Without sunlight, hydrogen atoms in the sea will undergo fission" I think I'm very far
yes you are
ah ok take 2
it's actually quite long
kinda
want a hint?
WHERE IS IT
Yeah I need a hint
somewhere in section 5.1
you stuck?
03:14
I'm guessing it's
"At that suction the plant cannot sustain its water needs as water is still being lost from the plant by transpiration, the plant's turgidity is lost, and it wilts, although stomatal closure may decrease transpiration and thus may retard wilting below the wilting point, in particular under adaptation or acclimatization to drought."
angry buzzer
it's actually "Water is retained in a soil when the adhesive force of attraction that water's hydrogen atoms have for the oxygen of soil particles is stronger than the cohesive forces that water's hydrogen feels for other water oxygen atoms."
??? THAT??¿¿
gosh
HAHAHAHAHA
how the fricc was "accelerate" derived from that
ok round 6:
input: "The atmosphere of soil, or soil gas, is very different from the atmosphere above."
(it'll happen eventually...)
ah ok
output: "Environmental sensors and microphones are very different."
u don't say
lolololol
my first thought was "true that"
03:21
Yea
"Accumulated contracts is a network of websites that contains questions and answers on specific topics in many fields. Each site contains specific content, questions and answers, and users undergo a reliable distribution process." yep that;sstack exchange

Q: What is a Rotting Wordâ„¢?

eyl327This is in the spirit of the What is a Word/Phraseâ„¢ series started by JLee with a special brand of Phraseâ„¢ and Wordâ„¢ puzzles. Stumbled across something while working on a puzzle for work... Can anyone come up with a (multiple digit) number where if you add up the digits and subtract that sum from the number and then repeat you do not arrive at a multiple of 9 within three steps?

Q: Floor floor floor inside another floor

OrayInspired from this question $$ \aleph(x,n)=\lfloor x\lfloor x\lfloor x...\rfloor\rfloor\rfloor\ $$ where $\aleph$ is the inner floor function with $n$ times. For example; $$ \aleph(x,3)=\lfloor x\lfloor x\lfloor x\rfloor\rfloor\rfloor\ $$ or $$ \aleph(x,1)=\lfloor x\rfloor $$ so from the pr...

@Mithical Suppose for example it's a three-digit number written abc. Then it's 100a+10b+c and when you subtract the digit sum you get 99a+9b+0c which is certainly divisible by 9 (it's nine times 11a+b). The same argument works with any number of digits.
So the answer is "no, no one can come up such a positive integer".
On the other hand, -15 works.
So do all nonintegers.
(In fact, I suspect it works for every negative integer not already divisible by nine, and I suspect it'll be easy to prove that, but I don't have time now to try.)

09:28
The remainder after division by 9 of the digit sum for negative integers is the additive inverse of the remainder of that number.
So applying this transformation basically doubles the remainder in every step, which can never reach 0 in Z[9].

CCCC hint: The first letter is S.
11:56
@msh210 i think this could be SPA+SMS but does that mean "starts"?
in fact, the dictionary says a start can be a "sudden involuntary movement"!
related to "startle", i assume
@jafe yep, well found
(And before people start complaining -- I was thinking of the count (countable) nouns "communication" and "SMS". SMS may not be communication in brief -- but an SMS is a communication in brief.)
@jafe I just checked etymonline. Apparently they derive from separate but related words in Old English (Anglo-Saxon), so yes they're related.
i see
nice to learn new (old) words

The actual answer has more letters in common with that than you might think.
It's E(-xpresse)S + PER + A + N + (-rulese)T (-n)O.

Nothing can beat the humuhumunukunukuapua'a clue tho lololol
The most annoying "remove the insides" indicator I've seen is "on vacation". Annoying not because it's wrong or unreasonable, but because my brain never wants to interpret it correctly. I think I've now seen it often enough to remember consciously what it's likely to mean, though.
(on vacation = on vacating = on emptying = after removing what's inside)
that is pretty tricky
i've been tricked by "without" meaning "outside" multiple times
the humuhumu clue was originally meant to be part of a jumbo crossword because it doesn't fit in a regular grid, but i couldn't make it work so i threw that away and posted it as a single clue instead
(the symmetrically opposite answer was supposed to be "scottish national party")
14:03
oh, I love "on vacation" - that's brilliantly cruel
@jafe very nice
@Deusovi Yeah. I don't recall seeing that before -- or maybe I did and didn't realize what it was. :-)
