Many things are anagrinds, but I don't think "like" is one of them.

So we finally found the one English word that can't work as an anagrind! yay us!
ok then things made of solid gold are, perhaps, FANCY = like
or a METAL is, like, totally solid - and gold is totally a metal

I'm, uh, completely stuck - can anybody tell me the next step(s) to this puzzle?

one thing you can do, though it doesn't obviously help much, is to remove the edge extending rightward from "between" the two adjacent 3s on the lower left side.

Avi
ah, that's true

oh, and look at the 2 on the left edge. It has one thing (hence, an odd number of things) coming in at the NW.
So it also has an odd number of {N,W} edges, so an odd number of {S,E} edges, so an odd number of things coming out at the SW.

also look at the right-side 2 below the 3

Which lets you remove the two "other" edges of the 1
After the removals I describe you can put some actual edges in.

Avi
4:29 PM
uhh
why would it have an odd number of {S, E} edges
oh, right, the bottom right sides of 1 go away

yet another AOA is at the northern edge, eastern 3

any pair of closed loops crosses each other an even number of times. Kirchhoff's current law modulo 2.

ok, that makes sense
if only Kirchhoff was pronounced differently
then you could do a cryptic going "Current law dictates, at this place, murders"
but it's pronounce here-hoffs, not here-offs
Oh my god, this poor man - I looked up his name in 4 different places and got a different pronunciation each time...

I don't think there's any standard version of English in which the sound at the start of "here" is the sound at the start of "Kirchhoff".

so fingers crossed
I feel like this puzzle has multiple solutions
maybe that will turn out not to be the case once the other side of the puzzle is complete, but I'm stuck again :x

@msh210 Correct! Over to you.
@Avi That looks like a Simon Tatham one. They always have unique solutions, unless maybe there's some non-default option you can select to allow multiple solutions.

Avi
Exactly, which is why I feel like the bottom left part is only solvable after the big loops on the other side of the board are done

You've got a 1 with only one edge adjacent to it not deleted.

Avi
where?

7:12 PM
middle left

near the left edge, about half way up
That should clarify a bit of other stuff nearby.

also, consider the 2 just right of that - there's a deduction you can make there

Avi

Avi
you're right I think
the top right is messed up
ok, that would be consistent

Avi
7:33 PM
... still not seeing the deduction on the 2, though
What you might call an accident as a result of hitting a curb
curbulence

The deduction I think Deusovi had in mind uses the 2 but isn't exactly on it.
It's another parity thing.

"parity" isn't the word I would describe it with, but yes, it's not exactly "on" the 2

Avi
I guess the possibility of a line to the top left can go away
no, wait, it can't, otherwise the 2 would be a 3
if you fill your lungs with water and then drain it out, would the coronavirus be washed away? (don't try this at home)
I'm betting it's a big fat nope
OH
the 2 is connected to the top right, no matter what
giving a line next to the 1
spectacular

7:49 PM
what's wrong with calling it parity?

Avi
uhm
that's the concept, but it can be applied in different ways
it's a forced connection, in any case

@Avi um what. no, and that's a great way to kill someone.

Avi

Puzzle Title: "A challenge of utmost importance"

???

Avi
As usual, you cross the street today, looking both ways to make sure nobody's coming. Suddenly, you hear the screeching of tires and see bright headlights as a truck makes an illegal left turn on red.
Well, that's it. You're dead now. Shame.
...
You wake up in a brightly lit room with a handsome looking bookshelf in front of you.
"Why, hello there," it exclaims, cheerily. You're confused; since when could bookshelves talk?
As if sensing your puzzlement, the bookshelf pats you on the back (they have arms now too?!), "Don't worry, you're dead now. Nobody can hurt you anymore."

CCCC Payment for each month after the first follows (after delay) the first of monies! (11)

Avi
After the fact sinks in, you suppose it's alright. After all, there is some sort of afterlife, after all. As if sensing your thoughts, the bookshelf asks, "Oh, did you think it was over so soon? No, no, of course not." (You think you heard a demonic cackle in there somewhere.)
"Well, the problem is, you'll fade away pretty quickly, if you're not the very best." You inquire, confused: "The best at what? That's not very specific."

(what is going on)

Avi
8:29 PM
A thick rulebook falls out of the bookshelf, turning itself to the center of the book. In golden letters, you observe the following text: "A person must be somehow great lest they suffer a hazy fate; their deeds must not be done in vain, or their spirit will be on the wane."
With great horror, you notice your pinky toe fading away.

Avi, I don't think this is the place for your fiction writing

Avi
This is a puzzle introduction btw
I'm just not done constructing the puzzle

That doesn't change the fact that this isn't really the right place for your fiction writing

Avi
True, I'll move it elsewhere
Ok, done

you know how in Ghostbusters, Venkman says (about the Keymaster and the Gatekeeper) "Oh, wonderful, we have to get these two together", and Egon says "I think that would be extraordinarily dangerous"? I sorta feel that way about Avi meeting humn and for not dissimilar reasons :)

we, uh, had to give him his own chat room. because he was particularly verbose.
Unfortunately he's been going through some stuff lately and hasn't been up to his usual self - here anyway.

!

@msh210 feels like this should be IN+STALL+M_+(-r)ENT (&lit.) but i don't see where the IN comes from
maybe after = IN somehow? or "after delay" = IN STALL?

Avi
probably the latter, imo - if that were to be the case, which feels a little tenuous
payment for each month = RENT, after the first = (-r)ENT
(-r)ENT follows the first of monies = M_ + (-r)ENT
(-r) ENT follows (after delay) the first of monies = IN STALL + M_ + (-r)ENT

to stall is to delay... can something be "in stall"?

Avi
8:43 PM
I hope not

@jafe I got where you are too - I don't know where the IN comes from

Avi

Further to Deusovi's remarks above, I suggest the following general principle: TSL is a place for conversation, not for thinking out loud. The reason for writing something here is that you have reason to think someone else here might want to read it.
8
That doesn't, of course, mean that no one should say anything here unless they know in advance that someone else needs to read it. You can often have a pretty good idea that what you're going to say might well be appreciated. (And of course maybe sometimes one just needs to vent or something, and doubtless everyone will understand.)

@jafe That reminds me of some very cursory research I did ten years ago that looked for prevalence of "eyewear" and "eyeware" with certain collocates. "Eyewear" was more common across the board than "eyeware". But "eyewear" was even more more-common after "gabbana", less so after "prescription", and least so after "protective". (Those were the only three collocates I checked, or at least the only three I reported on. Like I said, very cursory.)

But a question like "would I say this out loud at a party?" is probably a pretty good guide.

(You can read the report here if you wish.)

Avi
@GarethMcCaughan Would be a pretty strange party

You may assume a rather geeky sort of party :-).

9:40 PM
@GarethMcCaughan What if you're never invited to parties? Asking for a friend. Or I would be, if I had any.

Yeah, we're a bunch of introverts here and probably don't go to a lot of parties, and in any case there are probably going to be no parties at all for the next few months at least.

@GarethMcCaughan Good, we'll fit right in.
Reminds me of that xkcd -- I can't find it in a simple search -- about how people who read (redd) books while walking in decades gone by are better adapted for reading phones while walking now.

Avi
uhhhh no
not by a long shot
It's 10x easier to walk while reading a book than to walk while reading a phone (e-readers excluded). Reason being, you have to focus way more on a tinier screen to read on a phone, as compared to (most) books

Is it? I haven't found that to be the case.

Avi
It's still fairly easy either way, I just find myself having more close calls with the phone as compared to a book.
I've started to use my ears to listen for footsteps as well as peripheral vision to identify incoming people

9:48 PM
@Avi Presumably you've done that all along, unless you recently got a cochlear implant.

Avi
No, I used to walk while reading in school, and the halls were way too crowded to get meaningful auditory feedback
Now when I go out for a walk (and read ofc), I can actually hear incoming grandpas and dogs

Ah, found it: it's the title text of 1710.

Interesting
frankly, I don't think this matches any wordplay at all, but (3, 7) reminds me of AXE FLINGER
