Q: What common word would we have after following these steps?

Elissa RobinsonWhat common word would we have after following these steps? write down a zero put 50 on its left and 5 on its right add 1/5 of eight at the end

"Puzzling Stack" is genius! Excellent clue @ManyPinkHats

can someone tell me the rule please for those 2 examples
5 3 ??1??
5 4 ?111?
the 5 is the length but I can't see the rule for 3 and 4

Sid
@O.Rares Which one are you talking about?

@Sid what do you mean?
both use the same rule

Sid
"Those 2 examples" - Which two examples?

5 3 ??1??
5 4 ?111?
those 2
I know that for the output the values can be 0 /1/?
so 5 3 is the input
and ??1?? is the output

How about: Give a contiguous list of 1s of length B within a string of 0s, totalling length A. Use ? if indeterminate.
(with input A B)

6:37 AM
@Alconja I don't understand,the first value(5) is the length of the output

edited...
So make a string of length A, fill with 0s and a single contiguous string of 1s of length B.

so for 3 shouldn't it be 111?? ?

so 5 3 could give 00111, 01110, 11100
merge all cases into ??1??
(i.e. middle is always 1, others can be either)

oh
I try,thanks a lot

8:07 PM
Is it possible that the def. is "forgotten burden" for the C4?

anything is possible
i tend to think that forgotten is modified by half
because it wouldn't make sense for "a" to be modified by half

Sid
@Rubio It seems we never figured out the fun

8:40 PM
@Sid It turned out a second look was in order.

8:50 PM
CC attempt: Daddy can surround a conjuction with a bear (5)

Sid
I wonder if those two "a" would be considered extraneous.

Fine

p(and)a

Yeah

the "a"s are fine

8:56 PM
The "a"s seem fine. The words after them is used as a noun in wordplay. They could be optionally included or excluded. The "with" indicates the wrong direction, though.

"with" as a linking word indicates the other direction, though

Normally, it should be "[definition] with [wordplay]"

@North i think you meant, Daddy can lead a conjunction with a forgotten end followed by a pastry food (7)
not actually sure if this ^ is a proper cc though

"can" is extraneous, and "lead" is best not applied to synonyms

would Daddy leads a conjunction with a forgotten end followed by a pastry food (7) be better?

9:02 PM
now "leads" implies more than one, and you're still applying it to a synonym
maybe just remove the lead indicator, and remove both ends of the conjunction
hmm, but in that case the surface reading would be terrible
Papa leads a conjunction with forgotten ends, maybe

is there a different word that could be substituted for leads that can be used with synonyms, or is it just general practice to not concatenate synonyms?

oh, concatenation, I thought you were taking the first letter
yeah, Daddy leads a conjunction with forgotten ends should be fine
but you need to remove both a and d, unless you're thinking of a conjunction that is not "and"?
and I couldn't parse the original to remove two letters

oh wait i just saw through th ejoke
im slow

@ffao yeah, that would probably be better.
Daddy leads a conjunction with forgotten ends followed by a pastry food (7)

I think that's cluing waffle, right?

is that a euphemism for the brain, or is there seriously an automated CC solver? because I'd like to see one and mess about with it
I've seen some attempts at automated CC solvers that have been interesting

@ManyPinkHats here's the source code

9:16 PM
May 4 at 1:43, by Alconja
Here's my attempt. It works for all the test cases I tried it on: computeCC(clue) { return "PANCAKE"; }

There are some automated cryptic solvers that work surprisingly well, but Alconja's is λx.PANCAKE

def solve_cc(clue): return "PANCAKE"

Okay, I tried running the CC solver, so I have the answer now
SyntaxError: invalid syntax

I would also be interested in playing around with a cc solver if you do have a real one, Gareth

i should try and make one in Prolog
that would be interesting

9:20 PM
CC solver in Prolog: the answer to all clues is "Yes."

@ffao you misspelled pancake

i'm glad someone else knows Prolog memes
then again this site is 50% ppcg

Q: Mank, oil, pew, or IQ?

Rand al'Thor Mank, oil, pew, or IQ? What is special (very special) about this sentence? Hint:

@thecoder16 Darn PPCG-ers :-P
@Sphinx Ooh, I wonder what the answer to this might be.

PPCG-ers haven't talked here for a long time...and now I broke the silence :(

oh hey there Erik

How did that symbol get in my text box?
What is it anyway?

10:13 PM
huh, pasting it into the address/search bar in Chrome seems to have no effect... but then pressing enter converts it to a question mark
pasting it directly into google search doesn't convert it though, just removes it

its ASCII code is 8, btw

@EriktheOutgolfer isnt that a backspace character?

Oh hey, I know how I got it!
Wait, no I don't.
I did produce it again.
But now I can't.

control + backspace, no?

10:16 PM
Bah!

try it in notepad
(do you have Windows?)

oh, that's what that weird character notepad keeps producing is

maybe he used it in his recent question and this is a way of giving us a hint

who knows, "Darn PPCG-ers :-P" could also be a hint ;)

"more special than that" is a bit begging for me to vtc it as opinion based

10:24 PM
@ffao Nah, it's not.
It's one of those puzzles where there's one solution which makes that sentence ABSOLUTELY special, and a bunch of other random interesting properties that the sentence might have by chance.

the only difference between those two seems to be that one of them is intentional

@ffao For comparison, take a look at this old puzzle. Do you think both answers are equally convincing, or is one of them "clearly correct" and the other one just a random property of the sentence?

10:43 PM
that second answer is not really interesting

10:56 PM
And I just got a downvote. @ffao I'll ping you when it's solved, to see how special you think the property is :-)

Q: Brace yourselves: The GDPR is coming!

Tim PostIt's actually nothing to worry about. Brace yourselves: GPR is coming!
Speaking of GPR - @GentlePurpleRain why was my comment on the topic challenge rerun deleted? I saw you waved your hammer to dupe the old one, but surely I can still have the opinion that the duping should be the other way round?

Based on your track record, the property is probably compelling (and more strict than the vowel-shuffling), but I'm not upvoting until I see the solution.

@Deusovi Thanks, and that's fair :-)

I'm a bit grumpy today, ping me when it's solved and maybe I'll be in the mood to upvote it
"here are five words, do something with them" is not a compelling statement, even if the property is

I wanted to make it longer than five words, but ... couldn't.

C4 hint: There is only one wordplay element

11:02 PM
true, and the other one you linked did seem to have more info. but the letter distribution there is also interesting, and there must be some reason that it's so strange

@EricTressler I was trying to insert FOR or GOT into RELIC or GRAIL to get a synonym of "burden", but no joy.

Synonyms don't count as wordplay, right?

11:25 PM
Hm? What do you mean by that?
Double definitions are valid clues (and often both parts are a synonym).
