@LukasRotter Singular nouns ending with "s" take 's. Plural nouns ending with "s" just take '.
So we say Lukas's puzzles but the riddlers' riddles.
There might be some exceptions relating to Greek names - Socrates' wisdom? - but that ^ is pretty much it.

So you would way "lens's, cactus's, bus's, etc."?

lenses', cactuses', buses' if those are intended to be both plural and possessive.
lens's, cactus's, bus's if they are singular
@Randal'Thor I'd rather wait and see if the author has a not-100%-sucky explanation for that answer (I am not optimistic) and delete it only when it turns out there isn't one.

I intended them to be singular, yes. Just sounds odd to me, but OK. the article I was referring to was this one btw (rule 1)
Thanks for the input

re: Socrates', I feel like you have just an apostrophe when the 's' is pronounced like a 'z', as they are in plurals

@GarethMcCaughan Looks like @Emrakul is on the case.
Woo, Literature's committer count is a power of 2.

12:21 AM
@Randal'Thor As is the "% complete" number

@LukasRotter Naturally, since that's now by definition half of the committer count :-)
(Of course the real reason I posted that was in the hope of gaining more committers and breaking that power of 2.)

@Randal'Thor ? I thought other factors played into that? Welp, I guess not)

@LukasRotter They do, but the overall "% complete" is the minimum of three statistics, and the other two are either at 100% or nearly so.

Oooh. Yay. 5K rep for moi.
Howdy all.

@Rubio Congrats!

12:27 AM
My answer to that silly mirror or portal question has earned me a rather ridiculous amount of rep

Is there any clear policy on transferring rep to other users via bounties? Didn't find anything in the help center...

@LukasRotter Bounties are supposed to be for awarding exemplary posts rather than particular users, but there's a certain amount of leniency there. Just don't start awarding bounties to a sockpuppet to give it enough rep to vote or whatever ;-)

Note to self: Don't award a bounty to Will
@Randal'Thor Ok, so I'm allowed to start as many chat games with a prize as I want :P

12:46 AM
After reading through the whole @Randal'Thor rep kerfuffle it seemed like the Word of the Mods®™ was that it's your rep, you earned it, you can do what you want with it including giving it away to whomever you like. Obvious sockpuppet limitations would still apply.

Haven't people been reprimanded in the past for using bounties to transfer rep? I would argue that chat "prizes" are a transfer (since it's not really rewarding what ever post is arbitrarily chosen in and of itself)... Happy to be wrong, just thought that was the policy...

@Rubio Bounty abuse is possible, but it's harder than abusing ordinary votes. One important difference is that no new rep is being generated, just transferred; another is that bounties are by design a larger-than-usual transfer of rep to a specific person, rather than just marking a post as good or bad.
@Alconja I've never heard of anyone being reprimanded for that.

I've only seen the discussion on when someone tried to give rep to Rand, and while that ended up getting reversed, the official stance at the time seemed to be that you're welcome to reward people for things as you see fit - either by giving them your rep as bounties, or by upvoting

Yeah, I think that must be the one I was thinking of... And it was reversed because it was generally considered bad form (if not perhaps technically against a specific policy)
The idea of rep is as a (very) vague indicator of a user's knowledge of and contribution to a site. Transferring rep for reasons outside that site (friends, sock puppets, chat prizes) breaks that concept philosophically at least...
Not necessarily arguing against it, just saying some thought should be given to it and some vague consensus reached to avoid dealing with the fall out if some unforseen negative reaction/side effect.

1:05 AM
Well - in fairness - the caveat was that awards that would push someone into unearned privilege brackets would be given considerable scrutiny. I think as long as you're not making a material difference in a person's site privs by awarding them an unearned bounty, you're fine.

1:46 AM
@Rubio Congrats on the 5k! At the rate you're (very deservedly) earning it you'll be ahead of all the rest of us soon :-).

Bah.. I'm a scrub.
Ok serious question - cuz I know I've seen comments about how questions, which are far more important here than on other SE sites and which arguably take far more skill to build than to answer, tend to be undervalued in rep terms. It's my understanding that getting an exception to the rep rules for one site is unlikely to happen, so has anyone considered allowing questioners to post their question with a self-answer that is, in essence, "If you like this question, please up-vote this answer" ?
That would allow an individual voter to upvote a question by +5, +10, or +15. Or, by doing +/0/- to both question and answer, let someone award the questioner rep totals of -3, -2, -1, 0, 3, 5, 9, 10, or 15.

2:46 AM
That's a cute idea. I suspect it would be frowned upon by The Powers That Be, though.

@Rubio I don't like the idea of awarding bounties for chat games. As Rand al'thor said, bounties are meant to reward posts, not people. I'm not sure about any official stance on the matter, but if you want to do so, I would suggest at the very least asking about it on Puzzling Meta.

Meta post worthy? I had that thought a few days back and every time I see some of these truly exemplary puzzles that people craft makes me wish there was a way we could give back a little more than +5 for an upvote.

@Rubio That idea was discussed, and as I recall, was heavily downvoted. I'm having trouble locating the meta post right now, being on mobile, but it was one of the least popular options available.

@GentlePurpleRain Not sure why you addressed that to me; I wasn't asking anything related to chat games.
@GentlePurpleRain Ahh. Ok I'll see if I can find the meta post then, I wasn't aware someone had already made that suggestion

@Rubio Whoops. You just commented; it was Lukas who asked about it. Sorry about that.
@LukasRotter See my above comment to Rubio regarding chat game bounties. It was meant to respond to you, but mistakenly addresses to him.
@Rubio The original question was by me, if that helps. The self-answer suggestion was one of many answers.

3:02 AM
It's also part of the reason behind the wrap up post suggestion.

Ahhh.
That makes a lot of sense actually. Gives people that second-vote option without having to just bluntly ask for it

Sid
@Alconja I am still waiting for the wrap-up post on the insanely cool newspaper puzzle

@Rubio If you haven't found it yet, here's the answer in question.

:) sorry. I'm not exactly known for my speed of output (that puzzle for example bounced around my head for 6 or 7 months before it made it out).

@GentlePurpleRain thanks

Here's a possible solution to @GarethMcCaughan's cryptic clue, but I'm not really happy with it. I think "engaged in seduction" is TANTALISED, and "casual actor" means anagram SAID TALENT (which kind of means actor(?)).
Another possibility is for "engaged in seduction" is TITTILATED, although it doesn't quite mean the same thing, and I'm not sure how it would match the rest of the clue.

Other potential T-words: TAWDRINESS, TOMFOOLERY, TORMENTING, TORRIDNESS, TRICKERIES, TRICKINESS,

4:59 AM
@GentlePurpleRain The answer is not TANTALISED. I don't do indirect anagrams. Neither is it TITILLATED nor yet TITTILATED :-).

Re: my half hearted suggestion of TEMPTATION earlier... "engaged in" could mean "in" with a ring on it => "ion"... Of course that leaves "actor" => "tat", which, well... isn't.

Q: Are chat games with a prize allowed?

Lukas RotterI'd like to know whether I'm allowed to start games involving a bounty prize in chat rooms (specifically in The Sphinx's Lair). For example things like The first person who solves my chat user description gets +200 (where the user description would be a puzzle) But it may also include more...

Q: A weird screensaver

Lukas RotterAs I was gazing at my beautiful Puzzling.SE profile for a while, my screensaver started. But, contrary to what I expected, a completely unknown one appeared. Here is a short GIF of it: There are three shapes that appear alternating and move around the screen for a while: A jigsaw puzzling...

11:51 AM
There have been 42 downvotes for the last 8 questions, and only 14 upvotes. What happened while I was asleep!?

12:06 PM
Whoa, I see a huge amount of negatives in the main page O_o

Sid
Hell, I am addicted! I even saw puzzles in my dream last night..

Worst things to dream about :P

Sid
Oh no, there are worse things to dream about.
@BeastlyGerbil Did you flag that answer on the cadaver question?

12:21 PM
Yep

Sid
I agree it's a bit short.. but it does provide an answer to the question..
Oops, sorry, never mind

IMO any one sentence answer doesn't provide an answer. Explanation is needed

Sid
The question is about water freezing, not about zombies...

Sid
12:47 PM
Ok, Can this be considered a question?
29x+30y+31z=366 Find the values of x,y and z? x,y,z are integers..

It would be closed as a maths questiion

Sid
it has a nice answer to it, though..

Being?
Can't be bothered to work it out :P

Sid
Try yourself.
You would get the answer if you stare at it, a little while..
And, you don't need some high-level maths to solve it. Just some common sense..

Well if there each equaled 3 then it would be 270

Sid
12:54 PM
They are different integers, if it helps

if they were each 4 they would be 360
Its 1, 4, 7

Sid
Yep
Got it, didn't you?

Its just finding a way to get an extra 6 from 360

Sid
The easier way to get that, however is to just concentrate on 366.
That would answer the question.

Um, what
I mean, february is 1, then april june september november for 30
And the other 7 have 31

:P What?

@BeastlyGerbil ffao is talking about the 29x+30y+31z question

oh now i see

the "nice answer" to which has really nothing to do with mathematics

Q: How do I convince my grandmother?

AlexisHow do I convince my grandmother (who really hates mathematics) that there exist three positive integers $x,y,z$ that satisfy the equation $28x+30y+31z=3650$?

3:23 PM
and everything to do with months

i didn't actually spot that

neither did I until I saw ffao's comment. But I'd only just come here and read the earlier comments.

But I think that linear diophantine has more than one solution triples, so saying "find x,y,z" and expecting that answer would be a bad idea IMO

Sid
I asked for integer solutions and explicitly mentioned that there would be no great maths required..

3:30 PM
I think that question was already asked in p.se earlier
oh yeah, ankoganit found it

Yo, dudes and gals

Sid
@Ankoganit I would ask you to find out any other answer without using maths higher than middle school level
Plus, you have less than 2 minutes to give the answer.

@Sid Answer 2,2,8. Method used: W|A. Time: 10 seconds. :P :P

Sid
Lol, no cheating allowed..

@Sid heeyy, you never told me! :P

Sid
3:38 PM
Well, I did now

Ok, second try. Answer: 2,8,8. method: "I memorised it!" Time: 2 seconds. :P

Sid
Lol...
This was a question asked in a TCS interview.

Wow

Sid
Now can you show that half of twelve is 7?
This was another question..

Ah, Roman

Sid
3:43 PM
Yep

These are all pretty old tricks

Sid
Exactly.. That's what they mostly ask..
Apart from some early technical questions

But ofc, they wouldn't ask to solve an Alconja puzzle in an interview :P
Anybody had some luck in @Gareth 's clue?
BTW (since you are here) thanks for the bounty, @MushroomBangBoom !

unless they want to see who knows more puzzles offhand, I fail to see how those would be good interview questions
Gareth's clue is still stumping us all

Sid
@ffao Apparently, they think that it is "presence of mind" but nowadays, it is mostly trivia
Can anyone link the meta post that deals with the "wrap-up" post by the OP?

Q: The mysterious email on Mithrandir's Puzzlers Mail

MithrandirOriginal inspiration from @BeastlyGerbil's puzzle - This is an opportunity. Can you take it? I have just received this email, from someone who Puzzlers Email couldn't give me any info on - it just says 'Unknown'. I took a picture with my camera - maybe you can figure out what on earth this guy...

Q: Are [policy] and [rules] the same thing?

MithrandirHere on meta, we have two tags, rules and policy. They seem pretty much to be the same thing - the words are basically synonyms. Should we merge these? If so, which should be the main tag and which should be the synonym?

6:47 PM
@Ankoganit One of those puzzles posted by Alexis and very quickly answered by Gamow ... sigh.

Despite Gamow having been back a while - noticed that from his reviews - he hasn't posted anything, not even a comment

@Alconja Reversed by me, I should add, and voluntarily. There wouldn't have been any repercussions if I hadn't reversed it, as that meta post made clear. Mods do have the power to cancel/refund bounties, and they didn't use it in that case.
@BeastlyGerbil He was never much of a commenter. It was always Alexis picking fights with me in comments while Gamow stayed silent and aloof.
Now he's probably after a Steward badge.

Who is Alexis?

@Rubio A self-answer just for the purpose of getting extra rep to the answer would almost certainly be frowned upon, but a self-answer in the form of a wrap-up and story of how the puzzle came about is fine.
@BeastlyGerbil Formerly known as Martin. Gamow's sock (or at least, there's a ton of publicly visible evidence pointing to that conclusion).

@Randal'Thor Yeah - kinda figured that out and that seems like a pretty good way to do it

7:23 PM
Question - is there a way to get the 'move to chat' option before the point where the system offers it to you because of back and forth between the same two comment participants?

@Rubio Only if you're a mod.

Figures. :) ok thanks

Mods can move all comments on a given post to chat whenever they like (usually when there's a lot of them).
Ordinary users have to wait for the automatic prompt after a long enough back-and-forth between two commenters.

Hm. And it doesn't move the comments that led up to that. Silly.

Or someone could flag the post with a custom flag asking for the comments to be moved.
I've done that, and then they were moved.
Although that was on an answer to a question of mine, so maybe it's different there.

7:31 PM
@Mithrandir Yep, but that still needs a mod to do it.
I handled such a flag only today, in fact.

I take it you moved them? :P

Yep.

I didn't want to have to post that bounty... :(

@Mithrandir I'm still stuck...

@Mithrandir Going for the 3k mark?

7:33 PM
@Randal'Thor Yep.
@BeastlyGerbil Did you see my hint?

Yeah, and I assume you mean the hobbit
Still couldn't see anything in the pic though

Those are really hard to see, I agree.

Wait so there actually is something in this pic?

Nooo

@BeastlyGerbil Yeah. A guy who needs to learn how to use shavers.

7:38 PM
How did that get there?

@Mithrandir errr I followed the imgur code on your bookcase

@BeastlyGerbil Copy paste from the tinyurl.
It's an I.

rofl

Ohhh..... What are the chances that was actually valid :P

So you just found a random image of some guy by accident?

7:39 PM
@Randal'Thor apparently
So Gndgl and GndgI are both valid links. Wow.

Posted a new riddle.
@BeastlyGerbil And if you ever wanted a puzzle based on stack.imgur links:

Q: What kind of birds?

rand al'thorSeek out a sunny picture - Remember you're on SE - And on that sunny picture, Figure out what you can; You are a less capital idea Than those who follow you. What kind of birds appear? Hint 1: Hint 2: Hint 3 (like Hint 1, but bigger):

(spoilers!)

@Randal'Thor He's the one who posted the one that inspired my imgur mazes.

8:12 PM
@Randal'Thor that must have taken ages to get that imgur link

Are alulas found inside some weird gongs? LOL

Someone seriously asked the question 'Should opinion based questions be asked?' on a meta. >.<

8:52 PM
@BeastlyGerbil Nah, I came across it by accident (someone posted that image in Mos Eisley) and thought I could make a good puzzle out of it.

9:41 PM
Want.

10:01 PM
Unexplained downvotes on meta posts that aren't tagged bug me even more than on the main site :P

10:46 PM
@Randal'Thor sorry. Didn't mean to imply anything other than a voluntary reversal. What I mean is that you voluntarily reversed due to community disapproval. The overwhelming number of votes on that question (and it's answers) indicate that although there's no strict policy/rule, the community doesn't like the idea of arbitrary rep transfer. And a healthy site is built on 20% strict policy and 80% community consensus.

@LukasRotter On meta, downvotes often just indicate disagreement with the question being posed; they don't necessarily indicate a bad question.

Was going to say the same. Even without the feature request tag, people interpret a discussion as an implicit seeking of opinion, so the down votes indicate disagreement with the idea.

@LukasRotter What should really bug you are the questions tagged .
