Yes, but we're currently phasing out the sandbox, so I would suggest holding off on posting it for a bit. (You still could post if you want, but as of now it'd have to go through the sandbox.)

As in, the sandbox is going to be removed?
Also... I don't have a conclusive puzzle yet, I'm working it out still :D

Not removed, but no longer mandatory. We're currently discussing alternatives to it, and I highly suspect that it'll be unnecessary soon (but I'm saying that as a regular user, not a mod)

@ObviouslyJake The sandbox will probably still exist on meta, but we're hoping that soon it won't be mandatory any more, so people can post riddles without having to go through it. See my answer on meta and this starred chat post from Deusovi.

12:20 AM
You pointed out everything I disliked about the Sandbox and more than that in that comment... well done :)

Thanks for answering my question anyways :D, Now, Back to making my first ever puzzle xD (I do hope it's not too terriible haha)

@ObviouslyJake Helping people improve at making puzzles is part of the goal for this site!

Definitely. I love the idea of a sandbox as an optional thing, for people to help each other out.

Right - we're thinking of making another one for ciphers, too. (NOT mandatory.)

I almost froze there, I use a cipher in this, so I was relieved when you said the not madatory part :D

Yeah, the mandatory sandbox was an experiment. It probably would've been best to introduce the sandbox first, and then if necessary enact the moratorium.

12:31 AM
So, I have a question about the wording of a phrase.

I'm using the use of royalty and Crown, though i'm looking for a leader, President. Rather than a king.
Would someone come up with a deduction similar to what I'm wanting, or is it too far of a stretch?

Hm, I think someone might, but it is a bit of a stretch.
If you dress that part up in a lot of metaphorical language it might actually make it better.

12:53 AM
Does anyone mind sharing their perspective on this: meta.puzzling.stackexchange.com/questions/5343/…

@Areeb I'm with @AE on that one.

I consider anything that's not random letters a "message". I don't think that specific example is steganography though.

> Steganography is the practice of concealing a file, message, image, or video within another file, message, image, or video.
-- Wikipedia, emphasis mine

So I guess the alphabet wouldn't count as a message?

@Deusovi Agreed on the specific example - I might tag it and instead.

12:59 AM
(Honestly, I'm not really a fan of that one. It's barely a puzzle IMO. But that's another issue.)

But the tag wiki does need editing. I can fix it now, if you reckon +6/-0 is good enough meta consensus.
@Deusovi (Agreed.)

Hm? What do you propose changing?

' We should amend the tag to say "concealing information" rather than "concealing a message"'
As per the +6/0 meta answer

@Deusovi How do you think it compares to this or this? Again, not really messages being concealed there, but still nice puzzles in my (obviously biased) opinion.

Hm, I don't know.
Can you give an example of steganographic information that would not be a message?
@Randal'Thor I like both of those, but neither is steganography.
The original message has to look ordinary.

1:02 AM
@Deusovi Look no further than the Wikipedia page. Scroll down a bit and you'll find an image of a cat hidden somehow in an image of a tree, which apparently counts as steganography.

Yeah.
Because the original image looks ordinary, but you can get another one out of it.

I'm not too clear on the exact definition of steganography, to be fair.
@Deusovi I never said they were :-)

@Randal'Thor I think they're definitely puzzles though! And a lot more puzzly than the "alphabetic sentence" one.

So, on a different topic than steganography... Are any of you good at Enigmatic puzzles? I feel like this is a rather simple one though I can't understand it.
http://puzzling.stackexchange.com/questions/41667/this-game-is-a-puzzle-in-itself

@Deusovi according to wikipedia it doesn't have to be an ordinary message

1:04 AM
True, but it's usually a message of some sort.
I'd consider the cat picture a "message".

@Deusovi Yeah, I agree. Unless there's something we're not getting in the "alphabetic sentence" one, maybe some meaning in the ordering of the words.
... which presumably there isn't, since an answer has now been accepted.

Maybe we could use "data" instead of "a message" for the tag wiki?
Yeah, I honestly don't think it's a puzzle at all. I'd VTC if it wasn't binding.

@ObviouslyJake Something to do with music, apparently ... and there I give up. I'm clueless about music :-)

haha, well I guess you gave it your best ;)

I've edited the tag wiki - look better to you all?

1:08 AM
Now I want to make a steganography puzzle involving a man called Stefano Graphy.

That's definitely more inclusive and better defined
XD @Randal'Thor That could certainly be an interesting puzzle

@Deusovi I just changed "messages" to "data" in the tag wiki excerpt too, for consistency.
The excerpt is actually more important, since it's the only bit anyone ever reads :-P

1:30 AM
@Mithrandir Hey, how come you show up here as having 211k total network rep, when it's really something like 8k?

@Randal'Thor area51 "rep" isn't just the user's rep
it's their rep plus the rep of other users they've referred (or something like that)
you see below his name it shows 8,863, but on the far left it's the "total referral rep"

Oh, OK.

which if you click expands to show the other users' rep

I did a quick double take when I saw that 211k. "Is Mithrandir secretly Jon Skeet?"

1:47 AM
I have 4 pages of writing and ideas in front of me
I never knew puzzles took this much effort xD
I'm loving it though

Yeah! It's a lot of fun, but it takes some work.
My "chess fortnight" puzzle took two weeks for me to make.

it looked hella complicated on my first glance through earlier, when you left it shamelessly on my question, so I can tell it took time :)
I'm not much for solving them as I have no idea where to start, I prefer creation :D

1 hour later…
3:17 AM
Question: is there some post someone can direct me to about the scope for cubing here? I noticed there is a tag but I'm not sure what questions are applicable under taht

@Downgoat Pretty much any question pertaining to the Rubik's Cube is acceptable.
What were you planning to ask?

@Deusovi Nothing specific, just wondering.

5 hours later…
8:35 AM
@Randal'Thor :P Nope. Just referred some high-rep users.
@Emrakul @Deusovi @GentlePurpleRain Can you please look at this? meta.puzzling.stackexchange.com/questions/5370/…

Q: Was this really serial upvoting?

MithrandirI have a series of puzzles, my 'Clues' series, starting with this one. Yesterday, somebody went and upvoted all of the questions in the series, including two that I didn't post. However, now the 50 rep that I gained from it has been reversed, probably due to an automatic script that I remembe...

@Mithrandir FYI, we get a notification for every meta post :]

But rand's answer is correct.

5:25 PM
@Emrakul The thing is, I wanted to keep the 50 rep... :P

@Randal'Thor Hey @Randal'Thor, welcome back!

6:49 PM
@AE Thanks - long time no see! :-D How goes it with you?

7:20 PM
Does anyone here know what markup is allowed in question titles? There's no way to experiment (that I can see) without actually submitting a question.

@GentlePurpleRain I'm not sure I've seen any markup in titles.

I don't think you can
Darn it Ninja'd

:( I think you're right. Ah well.
No extra hint in my question title, then (upcoming).

I mean, i'd attempt it, though if it fails, I'd simply edit it to your second option. No harm there right?

Yes, you're right. I just tried it in the question I posted, and no dice.

7:28 PM
What are the standards for duplicate questions?
Because puzzling.stackexchange.com/q/41733/25860 is basically the same question OP posted earlier

@Areeb, that definitely qualifies. If you have the answer to the first, the second is trivial to solve.

pretty much my thought one it, thus the comment

Q: Okay, the sandbox didn't work. We still have a quality problem; let's figure out how to address it

EmrakulAs of today, the riddle sandbox is no longer mandatory. The close reason related to it has been deactivated, and the requirement has been removed from the sandbox text. It was an experiment to see if it would be sustainable and effective going forward; for a variety of reasons many of you have po...

@PuzzlingMeta I wanna be the first to answer this, to get post ID 5373 on meta.PSE, which is also my user ID ;-)

7:47 PM
@Areeb @dcfyj It appears I was mistaken. Mea culpa for not reading the post closely enough. I ought not to have stuck my nose in in the first place.

@GentlePurpleRain You're fine, I had flagged as a dup anyhow since I can't vtc yet.

@GentlePurpleRain I probably would've done the same

Is it wrong to include other peoples answers and work in your own for the sake of ease of access to the available information?

@ObviouslyJake No, as long as you attribute it. If they've posted it, they're assuming others are going to make use of it. (I assume you're referring to partial solutions to a puzzle, here.)

7:58 PM
@GentlePurpleRain pretty sure he's referring to your puzzle actually :P

I am xD
you ok with me adding the italics to my one @cfyj?

Yes, I caught that. Didn't want to assume, though.

dcfyj*

go for it, I probably won't have time to solve this one, much as I'd like to

Really, My answer is literally just to make things easier for people who want it. I'm gonna have a go at the riddles of course, however I'm not the best at solving things xD

8:37 PM
I feel like for the effort put in, the puzzle was solved reeaaallly quickly. Just proves that people are pretty good at this :D

@ObviouslyJake Yeah, people here are good and fast. Especially when there are lots of answers and they feel the pressure of competition to get it finished as quickly as possible.

I felt the pressure..... I felt it and didn;t win xD

8:50 PM
You were definitely second in the race though. I gave your answer an upvote already.

ty <3 :D
I was originally just piecing things together for others, then getting the formatting right. I then tried to solve it... I got one of them at least xD

9:03 PM
@ObviouslyJake IDK why, but you seem really really enthusiastic on Puzzling SE

I can answer that....

Because I love puzzles xD Even if I literally only just became a part of an actual puzzle world i'm loving every moment :3
Plus the people here are awesome

@ObviouslyJake That's great! More enthusiastic members is always a plus (provided they also make good posts, of course ;-) )

haha, I made at least ONE good post so far ;)

Those are great reasons. And the community is pretty great

I'm not sure about my puzzle though.... I have an inkling of doubt in my mind, that it's actually a lot harder to get the pieces together than i'm seeing it :')

9:10 PM
You definitely put a lot more effort in your first puzzle than I did

I mean, all it is is gathering clues to put together an answer. To me it seems rather simple. Though y'know, someone viewing the puzzle for the first time, they might be stumped.

Of course there's the guy who got one of the clues, though there are a few more before you can actually see where the answer is coming from.

I didn't put Tooooo much effort in, just like, 7 or 8 hours of coming up with clues that made reasonable sense, then giving an overall look of it which didn't give too much away
that's including the time it took me to look up the subject matter

I spent about 20 minutes on a not so great riddle

9:26 PM
When you've had more practice with writing riddles, you'll be able to churn out a quick riddle about some random subject just off-the-cuff.

I feel like I should write one about the Wonderful Wizard of Oz

A friend of mine, who i said I was making it to, made one and posted it after about 15 minutes of thinking and writing lol
It was quite a clever little thing too xD

On this site?

Or be used in a religion.

Right here I am a marker
For words of wit and wisdom.
^ For example, that was an off-the-cuff thing I just wrote in a few minutes now since my last message in here.

That's certainly well worded

damnit xD

(It would've taken me a bit longer if I'd made it rhyme all the way through, but I gave up on that after the first stanza.)

I have no idea what it is haha
well played

It's a star.
5
Stars are far away, seen only on cloudless nights
Five and six pointed stars are the most common, and the six pointed star is used to represent Judaism

9:33 PM
@Deusovi You, sir, may have a star for that. Because meta.

And of course we star things in chat, like you all just did! :D

I remember that thing about posting when you're not about. I see why now xD

:O

@ObviouslyJake My best time is eight seconds between post and solve
:D
i work fast

Teach me your ways
xD

9:34 PM
How long have you been riddling?

Not long, actually. I've always been more into logic puzzles - only started doing riddles about a year ago, maybe

@Deusovi What time zone are you in? Just so I know when to post puzzles and have them last a while :-P

@Randal'Thor CST, but my sleep schedule is so weird that I can be up at any time
I take naps in the middle of the day, then stay up until early in the morning
You're never safe >:D

Dammit. Clearly I need to keep an eye on my rep.

I'm pretty safe though. it seems he's only after the ones he can snipe xD

9:38 PM
Nah, I post solutions to longer puzzles!
I answered Alconja's fantastic "This is important.".
111
A: This is important. I need you to listen…

Deusovi(Thanks to f'' for the help in chat! He solved the majority of this puzzle - I just came in at the end.) Step 1: Crossword The crossword was solved by feelinferrety, Z. Dailey, and Sleafar: Step 2: NOTHEX Step 3: Using The Key you get a message for all four paragraphs: Step 4: Follo...

Oh, I remember seeing that

@Deusovi I was about to post a link to that!

question. At what point do comment upvotes become 5 rep instead of 10?

they don't give rep?

I mean
answers*
sorry

9:40 PM
Oh

Answer upvotes are always 10 rep

I have a +65 on an answer though? I don' understand this xD
as in, 7 upvotes, only 65 rep

Answer accepts are 15 rep
Huh, weird

Word to the wise though, @Deusovi: it doesn't set a good example to answer close-worthy questions. Posting answers makes it look as though those sorts of questions are encouraged; if a question's bad enough to be worth closing, then it's not good enough to be worth answering. In the worst case, you might help the question hit HNQ and get loads of upvotes; in the best case, you look as though you care more about rep than the upkeep of the site.

Maybe it split into two different counts? @ObviouslyJake

9:42 PM
@ObviouslyJake Repcap, most likely.
Have you earned a total of 200 rep today?

it says +170 on my profile

Yep, 315 today, which includes +15 for an accept and +100 for the association bonus.

@Randal'Thor Fair enough! I normally try not to answer closeworthy questions, but sometimes I slip up. (Also, wasn't sure if it was closeworthy - I'm much stricter about questions being "too broad" than most other members of the community, which is one of the reasons I was a bit hesitant.)

Excluding acceptances, bounties, and the association bonus, you can earn a maximum of 200 rep per site per day.

oooohhhhh
Well, it seems my new little face has built himself a nice little rep pile xD

9:45 PM
I forgot pressing enter sends the message

I was trying to see whether I could come up a with a riddle

@ObviouslyJake Keep it up! The more rep you get, the more privileges you unlock (until you've unlocked them all like me, at which point the only step left on the ladder is diamond mod like Deusovi).

I just recently got that one that makes me trusted, which made me pretty happy :D
got +100 for every SE site I'm a part of

Nice!

9:48 PM
Anyways.... My amateur self has to go walk his doggo's so i'll be back at some point in the near future

Have fun

@ObviouslyJake So you got like 600 rep all at once?
@ObviouslyJake Seeya! :-)

I got 604 I think
(I had some other thing on top giving me rep but yeah, 600 xDW

Hey does anyone know how to get GIMP to repeat a pattern?

10:10 PM
@Areeb Filters->Map->Tile (or Paper Tile, or Small Tiles)
Alternately, use the Clone tool, select the pattern you want, and just draw it.

@Shog9 thanks!

@Areeb oh, and forgot to mention the best one: pattern fill. Use the bucket tool to fill an arbitrary area with whatever pattern suits your fancy.
(if you have an image, you'll have to save it as a pattern first to do this)

Useful to know

So what do you guys get up to in your free time aside from puzzles?
(I return)

Coding, Video Games, and not as often Reading

11:11 PM
@ObviouslyJake I'm currently a college student, hoping to major in math. Puzzles are my main hobby really, but I also like video games and making 8-bit music

ooooo 8bit music sounds awesome! good luck with your studies xD
I don't really have any ambitions or hobbies aside from this new one.
I'm also consdered a weeb by my friends, so i guess Anime counts :')
I draw every now and then, when I can manage to find the inspiration.
I roleplay a lot,
play games,
Not too big a fan of reading, though if I happen to be near some books I'll pick one up and see what it's like

Oh yeah, I like anime too. My favorite is Steins;Gate.
I read occasionally - mostly math textbooks though :P

Steins;Gate was amazing
I did at one point do Maths ((there's clearly a difference in where we live ;) )) in college (Our college is 2 years after highschool and then we can go onto university)
is the next 2 years*

@ObviouslyJake Just curious, Do you live in germany?

Nope xD
England

11:21 PM
Oh, for us "college" is the same thing as "university".

"Murica"

Germany has an interesting education system

11:57 PM
Weird. Shog dropping in to answer a technical non-SE-related question? :-O
He usually shows up only when things are on fire (or at risk of being so).

Yeah, I was surprised too

That makes me think there's a story behind it

@Deusovi Oo, what kind of maths? Or have you not specialised yet?

@Randal'Thor Haven't specialized yet. Only a first-year student. I've read a bit about group theory though, and abstract algebra seems pretty interesting to me!
