12:00 AM
How is !? gray hair?

it's not
"Silvered" = AGED (as in hair)
"Silvered" = AG-ED (as in "applied the element [Ag] to")
it's an &lit because the definition part and the wordplay part of the clue are the same: they're both the entire clue

it's a ddef because both parts of the clue are (differently-understood) synonyms of the answer
hence, a ddef &lit clue

that is awesome

it's not!

Sorry, SE error
When I realised the message was posted twice I deleted one

for the second, "Spirit in a glass" has two different interpretations.

"Spirit in a glass" → Ghost in a mirror → BLOODY MARY ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloody_Mary_(folklore) )
"Spirit in a glass" → Liquor in a drinking glass → BLOODY MARY ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloody_Mary_(cocktail) )

once again: ddef because wordplay is a different definition for the same word, &lit because wordplay portion is the same as definition portion but reinterpreted

12:09 AM
Wow, so STANDOUT is not an answer? (Though I am not sure how TakingNotes is heading for the clue to be solved. If the enumeration is a ddef in itself, then we might be onto something)

I'm throw by the zero, if the clue were say "(8, 1)?" then I could understand that feasible path may exist to a solution which is enumerated and wp and def using all that, but does a zero have valid meaning? or will the solution simply been a single 8-letter word?

@Anonymus25-ReinstateMonica STANDOUT seems very unlikely to me to be right, because your justification could work for any 8-letter word that means "unusual". It's possible that the enumeration is a double definition in itself, but I'm not 100% sure how this is to be interpreted.

0 does not normally mean anything in enumerations, no - there's something really weird going on here
it's possible that this is to be interpreted as a clue that happens to be its own enumeration??? and the 0 should be dropped, giving an enumeration of (8). but i'm not 100% sure of that

The question mark needs to be explained too, why is it after the enumeration?
Usually it is before

12:13 AM
well, if (8,0) is the clue, which seems likely to me, then the question mark goes after the clue as it normally does

is it possible that there is no clue, or no enumeration? (just spit-balling ideas)

it's possible that the enumeration was withheld for whatever reason, though i would've put (enumeration withheld) if that was the case

Hmmmm
Could this be another old saw?

it's also possible that the clue is the empty string, though if so it will probably not be a good clue (or a valid one)

As in, a very hard and bad 2 week clue?

12:16 AM
i don't see any reason to believe that just yet, or reason to make fun of an old clue that has already been discussed to death

"To death" I must agree with that

is something like " (7)"? valid (=NOTHING), it seems to be missing the wp element though

it wouldn't be out of the question, but i agree that there would need to be wordplay as well
if it's a word that means "nothing", and can also be wordplayed by "(8,0)?", that would be an answer
could also be a word that somehow synonymizes to (, and can be wordplayed by 8,0)?, or any similar breakdown

ooooh that's clever
we're still working on the assumption it has to be an 8-letter word though, right?

i would be very surprised if it wasn't

12:21 AM
Are there any 0 letter words?

arguably, there are also infinitely-many 0-letter words :)

@Dmihawk If not then it's definetely an 8 letter word, what is the example of a zero letter word?

@Dmihawk no, there's exactly one (if you count that as a word)
oh, unless you're counting numbers, written out with digits

@Deusovi That would be clever if that was it

in set notation, it would read as "all values above eight and below zero"

12:28 AM
one very unlikely but technically possible explanation of the (0) is that it's something to that effect - like, the Japanese title of the anime "Laid-Back Camp" is officially ゆる キャン △, or "Yuru Camp △". i wouldn't be sure how to enumerate that △, and i could see a reasonable argument that it would get a 0 (though i would prefer 1)

TRIANGLE is an 8 letter word

...yes, it is, and i see no way that that is relevant
nothing in the clue suggests that a triangle is in any way involved - i was just giving an example of something that might give you a 0 in an enumeration

Deus, I had the same idea, although I tend to think that any character which can be represented using UTF-8 (or a text encoding scheme of your choice) would count as "1"

be it a number, symbol etc.

12:30 AM
@Dmihawk i would consider saying the same thing, but... what about the movie Face/Off and the TV show M∗A∗S∗H? i wouldn't feel comfortable enumerating those as (8) and (7) unless they somehow went into the grid that way

I feel like either the answer would have to be "MASH (4)" or "M * A * S * H (7) and include the asterixis in the wp"

well, typically punctuation is ignored when entering, say, hyphenated words

isn't something like "take-off attempt" (4-3, 7)?

in terms of wordplay i mean
M∗A∗S∗H would probably be most fairly enumerated (1∗1∗1∗1), though at that point you don't need to write the actual clue

ah yup
Korean war comedy about potatoes? (4)
sorry, couldn't resist :P

12:39 AM
Oof
@Dmihawk MASH ddef :p

i'm not quite sure how that parses tbh
"about potatoes" doesn't work as a definition

it was a lame attempt at cryptic-based humour...

it's clearly an emoticon for wide-eyed crying person with open mouth and a weirdly shaped double chin
who also happens to be marge simpson, if the cccc is part of it

Doesn't a comma sometimes take the place of a period when writing numbers in some countries? i.e. instead of writing 8.0, some countries write 8,0. Not sure if that's relevant, but another idea to toss into the pile.

oh yeah, that's true - good point

12:44 AM
oh gosh, don't throw localisation into the mix O_O

i've made it even more complicated, you're welcome :p

Yeah, that kinda works, except the fact that it makes an unfair clue
What if some people don't know about that?

lots of clues depend on things that not everyone knows
you could say "what if some people don't know about that" about a lot of clues

I mean, in Indonesia, we do stuff like that too, as in the comma and period replacement, but I'm not sure if other people are like that

Here's a thought: POINT ddef = "(8,0)" is an example of a point, and "?" is sometimes called an interrogation point - is this anything?

12:47 AM
yeah, commas are used for the separator between units and tenths in several european countries iirc

It's not eight letters, but if we assume enumeration isn't given....

are there any 8-letter words which mean either "8 units up" or "8 units sideways"?

@samm82 I do like POINT, but i feel like you'd need to have enumeration (5) to make that make sense

@samm82 hm, that would be an unmarked def-by-example

but then the ? is both indicating a def-by-example and working as the other def

12:47 AM
@Jafe Is that allowed or nah?

no

i don't think so

i wouldn't use ? to indicate a def-by-example even, but i think it's a thing
but double duty like that is definitely not allowed

I feel like it's important to note that the (8,0) enumeration is incorrect, rather it is the correct enumeration with some effect applied to it.

did you accidentally a "not" there

12:49 AM
.....huh

I think if I don't share that then the puzzle will be nearly unsolvable...

(i'm worried it will be nearly unsolvable either way)

so you've done the wordplay on the enumeration itself...??
in which case, where is the def?
i'm so confused

^ I'm with 'borg, my head hurts

i think this is the most cryptic clue i've ever seen
4

12:50 AM
The numbers are different, but that's not the only aspect of the clue...

unless the def is literally the blank space before the enumeration, but i don't know if that's even a thing that's allowed?

oop i think i've said too much

if the enumeration itself has been wordplayed, i do not see how this clue is even solvable...

there's no unicode shenanigans going on here

maybe the actual clue includes the CCCC: at the front?

12:51 AM
that'd be bonkers

possibly, but that would be mean

if CCCC: is part of the clue, i would be very angry

i'd say that's unfair

Oooh, that'd be super clever, ambigous, evil, but clever

it'd have to be CCCC: CCCC: (8,0)? right?

12:52 AM
yeah

yeah

wait a minute... is the enumeration anagrammed??

I'm thinking a mathematical set which describes both itself, and the action which can be taken on its enumeration to turn it into 8,0

What if the - clues something, as in "this is the enumertaion, not given"

12:54 AM
that's not part of the original message
(i considered that too though)

'borg you mean like "EIGHT" + "ZERO"?

@Sciborg (1) if so, i will be very angry, and (2) doesn't that mean the answer is eighty letters long

Oct 23 '20 at 8:47, by jafe
what the hint refer to is that the intended def is "CCCC regular" :)

yeah.... i'm just trying to figure out how on earth you could wordplay an enumeration

12:55 AM
there was one time the CCCC was part of the def, but I don't think that's relevant here
maybe enumeration is reversed? true enumeration is (0, 8) or just (8)?

i don't see any reason that (0,8) would be different from (8,0)

We DID THEORIZE a lot of things (assuming Sciborg's interpretation was correct)
THEORIZE is an anagram of EIGHTZERO, and it is the only one

you dropped a G

uhhhh, where's the G?

Wait, I didn't use the G, yeah

12:57 AM
ZERO could also be 'NIL', 'NAUGHT' etc.

this is really silly, but what if it's somehow cluing the parenthesis? i.e. BRACKETS is eight letters... but i still don't get the enumeration

and that would be an indirect anagram, which would leave a mark of shame on TakingNotes' entire family for generations to come
3

@Sciborg That has been considered before
But it doesn't consider the 0
But it IS questionable

@Deusovi you mean checked all the characters are what we think they are?

1:00 AM
yeah, they're all what we expect, including the spaces

What if 0 is the anagram indicator, and we will anagram 8 somehow

(a) how would 0 be an anagram indicator, and (b) how could you anagram "8"?

^

@samm82 It is confusing, and confusing is an anagram indicator

that's not how cryptic clues work
at all

1:02 AM
Yeah sorry, I'm still kinda new at clues that literally have no wordplay/enumeration

well those aren't really common things

maybe the 8,0 describes some aspect of the answer? a word which "8 of something, but 0 of something else"

i still frankly am unsure how this clue is legal, i sort of thought there were strict rules on enumerations. either you give one or you withhold one and they are strictly formatted. i've never seen an enumeration be part of the wordplay before.

You gotta think evil for an evil clue

i wouldn't consider it legal without some sort of heavy gimmicks given in a puzzle

1:03 AM
:/

random thought (probably 101% unrelated)
there are 8 planets in the solar system, and Pluto, which had planet-status revoked

true, but i don't see (8, 0) being any kind of acceptable def for Pluto

yeah and that wouldn't provide wordplay either

this is what i mean - we're going in circles because there's no enumeration to tell us if we're right or wrong

so (8,0) is the correct enumeration but some effect has been applied to it, and the answer is naming what that effect is...

1:05 AM
"I feel like it's important to note that the (8,0) enumeration is incorrect, rather it is the correct enumeration with some effect applied to it."

could it be a reverse cryptic, like "gseg" for SCRAMBLED EGGS or something

@Sciborg there's no anything to tell us if we're right or wrong
i would consider "reverse cryptics" also illegal

hanging up my hat on this one, feels too unfair.

agreed

Same
Wait, unless... no, that's too unfair
"i like words way too much" quoted from TakingNotes's profile
Maybe we SHOULD parse the enumeration as words

1:11 AM
indirect anagrams are still illegal no matter what you happen to put in your profile

it doesn't fit, but "SUBTRACTING FOUR" would enumerate to (11, 4) and then subtracting four, would drop it to (7, 0) - no idea if (a) this type of wp is legal and (b) there are any 12-letter words which mean "subtracting"
(four is the only number composed of the same number of letters as the value it represents)

(a) oh god no, (b) you could probably find one

hangs hat next to 'borg's

Places 3 hat hangers for other given up puzzlers, then hangs one penguin instead of hat

Kinda giving up on this one too, but for future reference, if you can parse "zero" as O because they look similar, could "(" be parsed as C for the same reason?

1:23 AM
i wouldn't allow "zero"=O on grounds of appearance alone

using l33tspeak in a clue feels so wrong

but i do allow it because zero and O are synonyms (e.g. "Hawaii Five-O")

That makes sense - the Wikipedia list of cryptic abbrs lists "Egg – O (the letter O loosely resembles the shape of an egg)" which seems wild to me

the wikipedia list of cryptic abbreviations has so many questionable things on there

1:26 AM
it's a good reference but you should take it with a grain of salt

Nah, that's too ambigous

the wikipedia list of cryptic abbreviations has so many questionable things on there
ooops, what's the strikethrough markup on here?
too used to Slack

three dashes :)

triple dashes on either side

thanks :)

1:28 AM
.........

all right, one more shot at the clue from my chemistry background since i hate giving up on things: O is oxygen on the periodic table, which has the atomic number 8.
relevant? probably not. but there you go

What is the enumeration then?

apparently there is no enumeration, so we're left to take potshots
shrug

Starring TakingNotes's hints

@Sciborg Looking at (8,0) with a chemistry mindset makes me think of valence electrons, but that's even less likely.... :/

1:44 AM
RIGHT SHIFTED - it would enumerate to (5,7) and right-shifting those numbers (on a standard keyboard, gets you to (8,0)
and that's my pot-shot for the hour

oh my lord... if that's the answer i'm furious
another potshot: parse 8 as "ATE" and 0 as "NO" and you get "ATENO" which is one letter off from Hateno Village from Zelda, obviously this is the true answer, i rest my case

^ I approve this answer :D

legit

damn how'd you get it so quickly?????

1:47 AM
if you squint and turn your head it looks like a mitochondria, so obviously the answer is POWERHOUSE OF THE CELL
i know, i'm a genius
no need to thank me

8 and 0 are both cubes, cube sounds like cuban, which is close but no cigar?

boooo

haha Jafe, that's brilliant!

beautiful

1:49 AM
My head hurts

if you change the 8 into another 0, it looks like a 0,0 which looks like a little owl friend and it's so cute that you don't need an enumeration, i rest my case again
it's hard being as big brained as me

(8,0) is a three-eyed owl, the less well-known friend of the three-eyed raven

8 and 0 look like phases of mitosis, so if there's a reverse to mitosis it could be that?

I'll release the true enumeration as a hint when I get home, unless somebody's had a true big brained moment...

can the three-eyed owl look into the future and give us the answer?

1:51 AM
we request the aid of the three-eyed owl

wake up babe new cryptid just dropped
the three-eyed future-seeing owl

@TakingNotes Wait, was that actually the answer?

pretty sure it wasn't

they say if you lurk in the PSE chatroom late at night, the three-eyed owl appears

Who ia the 3 eyed owl?

1:53 AM
@Anonymus25-ReinstateMonica Of course it wasn't, last time I clued ATE as 8 people didn't seem to like it...

is working on little owl friends

aha! bobble has proven cute owl friends

Picture upside down because owls

<3

nice :)

1:54 AM
Approved :D

cool (0,0)-b

i've obtained a rare image of the three-eyed owl

jesus that's terrifying

wha--

from Photoshop, I presume

1:56 AM
thanks I hate it

One of Deus's mighty creations :p

glad to be of service

imagine that showing up at your door and being like "grab your coat, the future needs you"
3

Third eye in the middle is out of place

"we need you to save all of hoo-manity"
4

1:57 AM
two right eyes it seems

hahaha

@Sciborg Starring cuz I'm wheesing laughing

@Jafe I would respond, "It's not a coat, it's a jacket, dear goodness aren't you supposed to be smart and stuff"?

"owl of us are counting on you"
3

"don't worry, it's gonna be a hoot!"
3

1:58 AM
oh my

Oh god they've reverted back to puns

Okay, look puns are great but they don't all need to be starred, that's effectively star spam

@TakingNotes Your fault
:P
"IT'S GOING TO BE A HOOTIN' GOOD TIME", he says. And I say, "Well what are we hootin' for, let's crack this bad boy up like an egg puzzle" :p

:P

if the given enumeration is incorrect and we have nothing else to go on except a question mark, i cannot see how the clue is fair or solvable

2:01 AM
Owl be leaving for now

"Hoot hoot, hoot" is owl for "Goodbye, Owl"

i actually have a cryptic clue for fans of 3-eyed animals

@Jafe oh?

A land animal with a unique origin (and three-eyed head!) from the south (7)
true story!

hmm
TUATARA?

2:03 AM
yup!

:D

also how on earth did that take like 10 seconds

ikr

i like weird animals

im still processing the wordplay

2:04 AM
what country do they come from?

NZ
i think?

oh, you mean Nezada?

yeah
north zimbabwe

obviously

8 eyed beast's backbone edge deleted as well as header ends with samosa (7)

2:05 AM
can't think of any other countries with those initials

@Sciborg New Zealand

please Jafe, be serious. It's New Zexico or Nezada

No Zoinks?

New Zonkeria

'borg did you know they were on our 5c coin? (when we had them)

2:06 AM
ooh, i did not know that! neat :D

what do Americans call 5c?

nickels

5 channels on TV

ah
so a dime is?

2:07 AM
10c

@Sciborg No, cents

May 13 at 11:36, by Gareth McCaughan
@Anonymus25-ReinstateMonica It's not a C4 if it isn't part of the chain (i.e., if you aren't posting it because you solved the previous one). It's just a cryptic clue in chat. I guess you could call it a C3...

The New Zealand five-cent coin was the lowest denomination coin of the New Zealand dollar from 1990 to 2006. The five-cent coin was introduced when the New Zealand dollar was introduced on 10 July 1967, replacing the New Zealand sixpence coin. On 31 July 2006 it was eliminated as part of a revision of New Zealand's coins, and it was demonetised (no longer legal tender) as of 1 November 2006. == History == The five-cent coin was introduced on 10 July 1967 with the decimalisation of New Zealand currency, where the New Zealand dollar replaced the New Zealand pound at a rate of two dollars to a pound...

ooh :D
so it was actually removed from circulation? like they don't mint them anymore?

2:09 AM
correct, our smallest is now 10c
we have 10c, 20c, 50c, $1 and $2 coins

lots of Americans want the penny (1c) to be removed since inflation means they're basically worthless, no vending machines take them anymore.

gosh, you still have them? O_O

we've got penny (1c), nickel (5c), dime (10c), quarter (25c) and then $1 coins
yeah, it's insane

In Indonesia, our smallest number currency are Rp. 100 coins

2:10 AM
you have $1 coins? I thought they were notes?
or do you have both?

both - although $1 coins are pretty rare, i've only used them for parking lots
typically you just use bills
i literally throw pennies away when i get them as change because they are so worthless
there used to be $2 bills as well, but i don't think they are made anymore and they are relatively rare

How did we reroute the conversation from C4 discussion and our heads exploding, to 3 eyed owla, to NZ countries, and now to money :P

I think I have a US$2 note at home...

in egypt they had both a 50-cent(?) paper note and a 50-pound one... no idea who thought that would be a good idea
(apparently it's piastre, not cent... in any case)

yeah, i have no idea why we have both the $1 coin and bill - the only time i ever got a $1 coin in my hands was from a parking garage when it spat it out as change
they are neat though, they have historical people on them and are cool to collect and such

2:14 AM
yeah seems pretty redundant to have both

cool thing about American quarters though - when i was little my grandfather used to collect state quarters, since there are 50 different state quarter designs, one for each state. they're all unique to the state and have like their state animals or other cool little designs. lots of fun to collect them, he had a full set

@Sciborg there's also a bunch of ones for non-state things

interesting, much like euro coins which have a different design on one side for each member state

they were only produced for a few months and were never made again, so these days they are a bit rare
or rather, over a long period and each one was made for a few months
i think of gramps whenever i see one :)

Sciborg, I'm surprised. I thought I knew what kind of man you were. But you haven't once called these owls "smol".
Autocorrect is stupid

2:24 AM
oh my god, you're right. i've failed as a man
how could i ;-;

Redeem yourself. You know how

clears throat

OWLS ARE SMOL BABIES AND I LOVE THEM

2:26 AM
Much better

2:39 AM
the 8,0 is clearly "rounded up" because if you round out the letters U and P you almost get a 0 and an 8

you've cracked it

@Jafe Oooh clever

in case anyone wondered about the wp of the tuatara clue, it's a rat + a u_ t_ backwards

3:00 AM
TakingNotes, if you're there, you said you would give the real enumeration ;)

they said "when i get home"
that could be months from now!

1 hour later…
4:08 AM
@Sciborg and 50c

ahh, forgot about 50-cent pieces. i haven't seen one in forever

TakingNotes said something's applied to the enumeration. Maybe the 8 is sideways and the answer is really of length ∞.

it's about as good a guess as any, at this point :p
maybe (8,0) is a metaphor for late-stage capitalism, maybe it's a horizontal line on a graph, maybe it's the atomic number of oxygen, maybe it's Pluto
maybe it's a phonetic spelling or a mathematical sequence or an anagram or a parenthesis

MOVE FOUR, because if you move 4 from 8 over to 0 then the enumeration is (4, 4) #GreatC4Solutions
In a similar vein, FOUR LEFT - i.e. original enumeration was (4, 4) and 4 moved from the right to the left

similarly ALL RIGHT with the values of (3,5) all moved to the right, except it's the other right to throw us off

4:19 AM
no, clearly it's ADVIL because that's what i need from trying to solve it

whoever thought of the names "god" and "devil" must have been like "hmm, i need some name for the good guy and the evil guy... i'm gonna make extra certain people know which is which"
random thought because advil sounds like a d'vil

go(o)d and (-d)evil? :p
clearly the biblical scholars were cryptic clue makers

clearly

Did you ever see the legendary "rotten" clue from Deus?

it doesn't ring a bell, did it involve rotting?

4:26 AM
Thou shalt not do this least: Dancing (5)

Or, maybe not Deus
I think I'm misremembering

hmm not sure

there it is!

oh my

wet rot 10 = god

4:29 AM
wait a minute, wait a minute. msh's infinity joke actually gave me a C4 idea and i hate it, but it feels weirdly possible. what if (8, 0) actually is (∞, 0), making the answer INFINITY? which can't have an enumeration because it's infinitely large?
that feels.... so wrong
that can't be it
using an 8 to represent ∞ feels very non-standard

you'd still expect some kind of wordplay to make up the word, no?

yeah. that can't be it... can it??

@Sciborg yeah and it feels like the rotation of that 8 should be indicated

yeah. i hope that's not the answer
at this point i just want to be told the answer so my brain can stop itching

same

4:36 AM
@TakingNotes mercy?
please? ;-;

ack, still haven't started on the preamble to tomorrow's puzzle
at this pace it'll be like "Hi, it's me! Across: ..."

"What's up bros. Across: ...."

Does ",0" mean to rotate something 90⁰ in any context?

not that i know of

Z,0,9,0 (3)

Sid
4:50 AM
( = opening bracket = B??
I think if the enumeration was withheld, we could come up with some answer but if enumeration is already within the clue... I dunno

1 hour later…
5:51 AM
CCCC Hint: The true enumeration of the puzzle is 7,7.
