@msh210 Solution to your CCCC is CROSSGUARD (a part of a sword which protects the wielder's hand), obtained from CROSSING GUARD (someone who helps get e.g. children safely across a road) by removing GIN*.
My earlier guess-I-expected-to-be-wrong was that the clue would exploit the fact that there is a kind of gin cocktail called a PEGU, which was striking because of course GU comes at the start of GUARD.
I had never heard of a "crossing guard" before. I think it's a US-only term. (This is not an objection or complaint, merely an explanation of my ignorance.)

@GarethMcCaughan that was, of course, the intended solution. Well found.

4:58 AM
@GarethMcCaughan The freaking out is hardly pointless if it's seeking to turn away bad luck. :-)
(Also— thanks for the excuse. Next time I use a drug, endless nonsense, and pointless freaking out, I can explain that it's seeking to turn away bad luck. :-) )

The fight has been stopped as Wilder’s corner throws in the towel in round seven. Say it out loud: Tyson Fury is the new WBC heavyweight champion of the world!

@GarethMcCaughan A + POT (drug) + RO(-t) (endless nonsense) + PA(-n)IC ([compass] pointless freaking out) = APOTROPAIC, seeking to turn away bad luck

Hmm, who's a 20k-er ...
@Alconja @Stiv @hexomino couple of old non-answers here (the question isn't "what fits this riddle" but "why does this specific word fit this riddle").
Also this question is way too broad and I've already voted to delete.

Q: New answer vs. update existing answer

Ébe IsaacWhen making multiple guesses to a question would it be better to update an existing answer or posting a new answer? Surely in the case where the new answer is worked on top of the existing one or with slight modifications, it’s best to update an existing post. How about times where the answers a...
