Q: My prefix proved a girl's rank

ention everyone My prefix proved a girl's rank. My infix receives your thanks. My suffix is grey and healthy. My whole brags the wealthy.

@JeremyDover X or W split is small hint(K = GRA be J fcyvg -> II -> svir cyhf svir = GRA)

@OmegaKrypton OK, so I think the two middle words are rot13(YNT [nybat] naq PNO [guebhtu]). But that only accounts for 5 errant grids. Can you give a hint which is the sixth?

Puzzled pals . . . related obvious tidbits that need to surface once and again . . .
- Information translation takes almost as much energy as it gives. Not simultaneously. Please figure out how to tap the lag and, on a good day, explain it.
- Most information occurs at borders of order. Following those borders is chaotic.

@JeremyDover yes for the first, no for the second
@JeremyDover hint. there are 9 large grids of nine small squares. in terms of the Large grids, the TL, TR, BL and BR are all perfect, 9/9

Guess I'm not understanding...in the hint in the puzzle, you said 6 grids had errors (thus 3 correct), but now you say 4 are correct. Can you please confirm which is correct?

@humn I don't understand yet, but somehow I'm starting to become enlightened

2:11 AM
@JeremyDover 6 letters wrong

Ahh..I've got it now. I misunderstood. Let me have another look...the above fixes 5 of them.

2:36 AM
@OmegaKrypton: I just can't figure out what is wrong. Of what I've got, I like EEL for "like snake like fish" the least, but then I have to fix up an along clue I'm good with. Need to leave this for now...bedtime here.

2:48 AM
@JeremyDover gn then, and yes ur guess is right

Q: The story of a blind girl

AnonymousHere is a story of the blind girl. I suggest you read fully and then answer the question. This happened when I was in Elementary School. I was on my way home from school when I was stopped by a a girl with long dark hair that stretched to her waist. I cursed under my breath when I saw her eye...

Truly, pals, please take the baton, one way or another. It burns a hole in my crotch.
Work it over. And, again . . .

@Sphinx mixed feelings bout this one

NOT how that came off.

Oh and hi hümn

I truly want to do good. But have the worst instincts.
Along with the best ideas.
Please play along and the world will improve.
Not here? Bye again.

5:17 AM
@humn To quote the apostle Paul, "For I do not do the good I want, but I do the very evil I do not want!"

5:56 AM
@humn w- ?

Got lots to do for the night so can't work on this particular puzzle :/ The burning question is now posed: will oAlt be able to finish making a puzzle before Christmas arrives?

*news announcer voice* stay tuned; we'll be back next week!

Well, the announcer can be back next week, but I can't, since I'm planning to finish it by Christmas and more than that it's also an entry to the flags FTC :P

if not, there's plenty of time to change it into an easter puzzle

tru

6:05 AM
@oAlt ah, right
which means you have three/four days to finish your puzzle

A four-day struggle

:/

gotta trot off for now

6:29 AM
In the C4 archive, can someone please edit row 1594 (entry number 1581) so that the explanation has "(o)F (stuf)F" instead of "(stu)FF"? (I haven't edit access.)
Thanks, @Deusovi

sure, no problem

A: Fortnightly Topic Challenges Threrun: Topic Suggestions

BubblerMöbius Strips, Klein Bottles, and other unusual topological surfaces Imagine an elastic square as above. If you ignore the red edges and glue the blue edges so that they have the same orientation, you get a Möbius Strip. If you join both pairs of edges, you get a Klein Bottle. This is not the on...

Q: Communication via a Rubik's cube

Rajdeep SindhuSo, I watched The Promised Neverland recently and after exploring a little, I found out that Norman used a 5x5x5 Rubik's cube (aka a professor's cube) to communicate when he was held at the $\Lambda\text{-}7214$ research facility. The image below describes the same. So, I began wondering how on...

Q: Captain Clumsy's crummy communication

StivAn entry in Fortnightly Topic Challenge #45: Flags Captain Clumsy never ceases to amaze me... This morning I was down at the dockside when I heard a shout from a nearby ship. Steeling myself, I looked up... then let out a groan... Him again! The docks were noisy and I couldn't hear exactly what ...

Q: To whom it may concern

meet112Look It Up To whom it may concern.

4:51 PM
To go on: I don't (yet?) know whether all information degrades, but where it does is where it is most discernable.
(Made a bunch of pictures/programs as demonstration, no longer transferable. Might again.)
(Used to call it "fuzz" before "chaos" trended)
But truly: Detecting chaos is statistical, not deterministic.
By now, i hope, this doesn't sound like ranting.
I can and have measured information, in a fun way, until it couldn't keep up.
And, possibly, that lag is potential energy. Just try and convert binary to ternary on the fly and you'll know what i mean.

@feelinferrety No, the java was not me

5:08 PM
And truly: where chaos is barely detected, order is easily followed.
Pictures to follow.
(Meanwhile, order is not the end all. Just a lamp post. Stay tuned.)

5:26 PM
@oAlt , oWow
But, yeah, if a lifelong friend (underground mechanic, first, physics bigwig inevitably) hadn't died too soon, this conversation wouldn't be here.

6:00 PM
@Avigrail woah it's avigrail!!

Woah! Who are you again?
@Randal'Thor Hello there

@Avigrail Long time no se

Ok, you've had that one planned for months ;)
Good to see all the old names are still up

Not all ... lot of new ones though
But hey, it's all relative.

Spoken like a matemagician

6:14 PM
I'm no magician, mate.

Hey, it's @Avigrail !! (kidding: my stint in this room began after your previous one ended. But I'm pleased to make your acquaintance, I'm sure.)

ha, what a warm welcome

There's a hat for that.

6:30 PM
morning folks :)

mornin', dmi

@Avigrail \o
@Dmihawk evenin'

So who are you

who is that directed at?

Yes

6:37 PM
I'm bobble. I make grid-deductions and crosswords mostly (not really crosswords recently). US high school senior.

(Need to look up what high school is in my local education language)

I'm in 12th grade
last year of regular school, will go the college next year
that better?

Ah so you're in high school
Do you like school or can't wait to get out of it? ;)

right now it's Very Weird, with no in-person classes and such
But I like school since I can tutor lots

@Avigrail we've met :P

6:41 PM
<- Dmihawk, resident Kiwi and future-dweller (courtesy of timezones). Most recently I make Density™ puzzles. Long out of high school and professional software engineer

@Avigrail I'm a mathematician by training, no longer in the field; no good as a puzzler, but I enjoy it. I'm here in this chat room mostly for the C4. You?

@Mithical Almost didn't recognize you without the long ass beard :O

indeed

(Although it hasn't been that avatar in... at least three years)

6:44 PM
@Randal'Thor very apt in this case

@msh210 I was thinking the same

7:10 PM
@Avigrail matt, also merrybot. Trekkie, amateur linguist, etc.

@Randal'Thor there was no hyphen in my sentence. I don't see how your pic applies at all O:)

@Avigrail the hyphen in your sentence was elided, not absent. That's an important difference.

@bobble the floor plan is nearly finalised :P

Have you drawn up a list of talks?

Where's the nap room
-1

7:22 PM
@bobble you mean like keynote speeches?

yes
I think Sciborg wants to present "The Real, Proper Way to Drink Hot Chocolate"

"off-topic Math.SE questions" lol

I get the feeling a large proportion of our community wouldn't want to talk in front of an audience...

because (1) anonymity (2) covid
(3) potential embarrassment

@Avigrail fixed :)

7:26 PM
@Avigrail It applies even better when there's no hyphen :-D

@bobble first keynote speech would have to be "Deusovi presents: how to solve complex-looking puzzles in scarily short amounts of time"

^

@Dmihawk I think you should add some parking closer to the entrance and reserve it for vehicles with handicapped permits.

@Dmihawk I hate it, which made running an escape room a tad difficult

and that's a giant parking lot to begin with. Or is it just a small building?

7:28 PM
Also, that's a huge bathroom.

@Dmihawk Too much Deusovi. Why did I never get a plinth when I was the highest-rep user :-P
Jun 1 '15 at 20:05, by leoll2
The puzzling altar is currently occupied by JoeZ, sorry

there are names I haven't seen a while

@matt It's a small building, but it's bigger on the inside.

ooh yay, non-Euclidean geometry

makes sense, makes sense

7:29 PM
@Mithical I was going to link the message above that, but that user doesn't even have a name any more :-(
@matt Gallifreyan geometry.

haha the investment for the non-existent convention is making me grin :D

@Randal'Thor today I learned

@Randal'Thor we can host the convention at your house if that makes up for it? :P

@Dmihawk brb hiring Gallifreyan architect
3

@Randal'Thor you can have a keynote speech on editing, seeing as how I can't seem to find a SE site where you haven't edited at least one question I've read :)

7:33 PM
@Dmihawk :-D

pouts I've edited a bunch of posts, just as a Community user

Your chat parent account is on SO. I haven't edited anything there.
I have edited various HNQs on sites where I don't even have an account though, anonymously.
@bobble jinx

same

still trying to think of my keynote speech

that's because Jon Skeet is king of SO :P

7:34 PM
@Mithical they give keynote speeches between the poems on תשעה באב, don't they?

....
Ouch.

I'll give a speech on "Writing Probably-Useless Welcome Comments"

perfection
my speech will either be on Niche Linguistics or How to be a Square

Mith can give a speech on Spam ;-)

ooh, yummy

7:39 PM
the emails or the canned meat?

that's what I'm working on right now, actually

7:54 PM
this question has four answers, all with a comment by me asking for more explanation

9:46 PM
ok @bobble Hope that meets your requirements.

Yes, it's great! You got my upvote. (Actually, you got it after the first edit, but you definitely got it now)

Desnarkified I see.

I just followed my first question on Puzzling. And of course it isn't because I want to follow it, but rather that I'm worried they'll try to vandalize their question again and it's too low-voted to be bumped.

what's your first question?

I mean that this is the first time I've followed a question

oh, gotcha

So this is the first question that I've followed

English is so vague :P

11:38 PM
this is my first puzzle
I'm not that proud of it

have an upvote anyway, good effort for first question :D

oh GODS GODS GODS I have a link to my repl.it profile there
@Deusovi, I know mods can redact revisions - can I edit it out and y'all redact the time when I put it in?
I feel so stupid...
oh not repl.it but github
still bad bad bad bad

does anyone in here have good creative writing skills? In particular, the ability to write half-decent comedy? Looking for some feedback before I start drafting something
