have you guys heard brainstorm/green needle?
that's some serious craziness
I've realized you can present it as a magic trick
ask someone to pick of one and think of it, and then you'll play the audio clip corresponding to the one they're thinking of
works good, but would be better if it were less contrived words
I do not understand at all how it works though, so i cant really try to construct a better one
here's it for context if you haven't seen it
(and in case it doesn't work for you, many people always hear the one they think of)

That illusion has been well-known for a long time. Stairway to heaven backwards, for instance.
There's en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McGurk_effect, which is triggered by a visual (some youtube videos of that too)
Or you can just read through en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auditory_illusion
I guess there's also this article about exactly the same thing (a different clip, though) from a few weeks ago: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yanny_or_Laurel I can't find a specific name, but it's just generally that if you're primed to expect to hear something in a noisy signal, you can hear it.

welp
still, the facct its been known for a while doesn't make it any less cool cause I haven't known about it for a while!
do you have any other good example? (in audio form)

1:14 AM
No, I imagine most of the famous ones are linked from the "auditory illusion" page. I've spent a lot more time reading about visual illusions. There was a good TED talk about those.
youtube.com/watch?v=G-lN8vWm3m0 is about the McGurk Effect
I expect that the illusion you linked is similar, except instead of visuals overriding audio, it's the thought of a specific phrase

yeah seems very different to me tho
like
you couldn't really present that one as a magic trick
i'm not even sure it HAS been well-known for a long time
I haven't seen any other examples of it

oh i've seen the ba/fa thing
and yea, the addition of visuals makes that less impressive

doesn't work for me, I only hear green needle

i was able to hear (brain|green)(storm|needle)

@stacksfiller the stairway to heaven backwards thing is similar; if you don't read anything and just listen to it, it sounds like nonsense. Then if you read the "lyrics", suddenly that's the only version you can hear

1:21 AM
of course this phenomenon is well-known to everyone since they as a child misheard the lyrics to a song and sang it wrong for 10 years before realizing

Anyway, I guess if you want to draw the line distinguishing this from that, then maybe it is new.

but yea misheard lyrics are definitely not new

ok yes that's a good point ffao
you can change what you hear just by thinking about it
if the mishearing is reasonably good
but it's nothing on the scale of brainstorm / green needle because they're so different said aloud
they don't share a lot of letters!
I don't understand where the s comes from!
(I always hear "What are you waiting for? Say goodbye to my heart tonight")
wait is that the real lyrics

what the hell, I just heard brainstorm

oh lol

1:25 AM
this is freaky

it changes in the official lyrics from "take a bite" and "say goodbye" but they sound the same omg
why
im so confused

the brain/green part is easy to understand. but the rest took me a while

I did genuinely do is as a magic trick for someone

it's actually something like this:
BRAIN S--TR
GREEN EEDL

and I "guessed" 9/10 times correctly what they were thinking
they thought it was like a pattern thing

1:29 AM
and we fill in the gaps
the weirdest part is the S/E sound to me
ha, nice

I want to try it on others

but if they always hear one -- like some do -- it will be awkward
"why are you always guessing the same one?"
haha

1:50 AM
listening on slow, I agree with Deus -- the speakers are saying brain storm but there is some sort of static high pitched noise at the time of the ST-
that sounds a lot like EE
so it depends on if you're focusing on the high sound or the low voice
same as the Yanni/Laurel thing -- a combination of a very low voice + very bad speakers

interesting, it's possible to hear "yanny" even in the original source (which presumably has the highest fidelity)

in the viral recording I can only hear yanny

It does use visual, but it's not needed

in the original source I can switch depending on which I want to hear

2:02 AM
just to make you think of the specific word
