@Alconja C+O(HERE)NCE ?
C = circa, about; ONCE = when, around HERE = now

@EricTressler Thank god. Yes, coherence. Nicely done.

thanks. it only took me 6? hours

:) well, it's not like you had anything more important to do, I'm sure.

spread over almost 2 weeks, it was pretty easy to find the time

12:36 AM
It just took me about 6 hours to figure out why ONCE=when. For some reason my mind refuses to believe it

CCCC: Hoped-for blood type among medical professionals (6)

regarding the surface reading, you could regard it as both the universal donor and the universal receiver in a way
because obviously if you're collecting blood you hope for O- but when you need to give someone a blood transfusion it's obviously the opposite

1:09 AM
@EricTressler Great surface!

so like, i think either hoped-for or professionals is the def

Just hoped, so it would be DEF for WORDPLAY
if A+ is interpreted as AT, WANTED would be- oh wait, I don't think WNED is a doctorate degree, but every combination of letters is, so maybe :P

is for necessarily the divider?

Not necessarily, but it would be the one that makes the most sense to me

well i mean within the sentence hoped-for is used as a word so saying it can't be a def seems silly to me but whatever
whichever though
so thats three real possibilities
except like
the way you seem to be thinking of hoped seems to be same as hoped-for anyway
so two again

1:18 AM
@Quintec thanks

i agree btw it is a very nice surface
ok so
@EricTressler idk what the standards are for among, but is it Coveted?
O being blood type
vet being a veterinarian

it's (6)

oh i forgot to pay attention
lmao
hmmmm
coveted is interesting though because it does have that vet part

Yeah, the only word i can think of is WANTED
So that gives you OVET, where would the CED come from anyway? @DestructibleLemon

CDE is a medical professional but scrambled i guess
which i don't think thats allowed really

1:23 AM
Yeah

A medical degree is a vocational or technical degree awarded for studies in fields associated with medicine and/or surgery. A worldwide study conducted in 2011 indicated on average: 64 university exams, 130 series exams, and 174 assignments are completed over the course of 5.5 years. As a baseline, students need greater than an 85% in prerequisite courses to enroll for the aptitude test in these degree programs. == Primary medical qualifications == In many jurisdictions, individuals require a medical degree to register for a licence and legally practice. This is known as a primary medical...

Q: Coin removal problem

JonathanI have a slight variation of the coin flipping problem. There is a line of n coins on the table; some of them are heads up and the rest are tails up, in no particular order. The object of the puzzle is to remove all the coins by a sequence of moves. On each move, one can remove any head-up coin...

5:59 AM
@EricTressler Well done! I thought about coherence as well, but dismissed here = now. I'm still not buying it and I can't think of a sentence where you can replace one with the other and not change the meaning. (I briefly pondered CE = now, as opposed to BCE = earlier, but couldn't make it work, of course.)
That once = when is more obvious to me: When / once I've done my homework, I'll set the next C4.

6:09 AM
@MOehm As per my first hint, yes a little dodgy, but a here = now sentence is "here is your opportunity" (as per google's def 3).

Q: Finding lightest and heaviest?

JonathanGiven n > 1 items and a two pan balance scale with no weights, determine the lightest and the heaviest items in $[3n/2] − 2$ weighings. I tried splitting down the middle and picking one side over the other given some condition, but I'm not able to properly define the conditions.

Hm. Yes, I can see that both can loosely mean the same, but I'm still se them as different, even in the sentence you provided.
(Unfortunately, that "define" thing doesn't work for me. It gives me German definitions if one exists. Apparently, Here is a variant spelling of Hera. I haven't found a way to tell Google that I want English definitions. I can translate these defs, but I dont get original defs.)

6:25 AM
That's annoying. FWIW, the def I'm referring to says: Used when indicating a time, point, or situation that has arrived or is happening. Synonyms: now, at this moment, at this point, at this point in time, at this time, at this juncture, at this stage; "here is your opportunity"
(not that I'm arguing that it's not a stretched definition, made worse by the other stretched defs in the CC)

Thanks. I don't doubt the equivalence. I'm probably just miffed that I dismissed it. Had I seen the "once", perhaps ... (But I didn't, so kudos to Eric.)

Would "Salad" be an acceptable anagram indicator in a cryptic?

Yes, I think "salad" works, because the last step in making a salad is to mix the ingredients.

Ok. Don't want to be too obscure.

8:17 PM
I'd say "salad" would be an acceptable anagram indicator after the words to be anagrammed, but not before.

There are some quite obscure anagrinds out there, but in general, if a word or expression carries associations of mixing, shuffling, ordering, shaking, rebuilding and so on, it can be an anagrind.

I agree with Deusovi: "X salad" is fine but "salad X" wouldn't be. You could probably have "salad of X", though.

I agree with that, too. (But didn't think it needed explicit mentioning.)

@Deusovi preview of what I'm working on: Age a herb salad for a cat. (8)

The construction works, I think. But isn't an "aged" salad just a wilted one :)

8:28 PM
Well, Cat's don't eat salad, so it doesn't matter.

Good point. I'm off to bed. Good night.

If something "Takes" something, is it necessarily an insertion? Or could it also be a concatenation?

9:10 PM
I think it could be either. It could possibly even be a deletion! Well, probably not with the literal word "takes", but "taking X" to mean removing X -- i.e., taking X out -- would work.

9:31 PM
It's up.

@Alconja correct
"hoped for" without the hyphen was the intended def., and I guess technically the answer should have been something like "dreamt of"; I was hoping that it was not sloppy enough to annoy anyone.
