00:00 - 20:0020:00 - 00:00

8:00 PM
no idea what "the right way" could be - right now I'm not getting anywhere though
please tell me it doesn't involve anagramming

it sadly does
but it shouldn't be that hard, there are only 18 letters...

...
that's actually a lot for an unguided anagram

@Deusovi just don't turn left.

@Deusovi hint for anagram: talked about in chat

we haven't talked about anything related to an anagram
or at least, that seems related to an anagram
and in any case, we don't know what to anagram - unless it's just the letters that appear at least once?

8:10 PM
not quite, it's related to letters and the numbers
the frequency, that is

and... the numbers?
I'd thought of usingg A1Z26 on the frequencies but that gives a lot of Fs

I'm guessing that perhaps the q is for question
but not enough us

it's what gerbil said at first
q-e

oh so it is simple sub

wait, how can it be sub and anagramming? or is the anagram unrelated to what we've been trying to decode?

8:13 PM
Pretty short. Gonna be hard to break
^^

after you simple sub, it's an anagram?
was that not what you meant by anagramming

...how with so many letters?
wait
I think I know what it is

q : 14 a : 11 k : 10 w : 6 y : 6 m : 6 f : 6 n : 5 j : 5 o : 4 z : 4 l : 4 b : 3 c : 3 x : 3 d : 1 e : 1 g : 1
q =e, a = t, k = a, w=o, y=i, f =n?
or along those lines then

probably not
I think they're spelled-out English letters

how did you get a=t

8:15 PM
ooooh

that's the only way I can see of reducing this text down to 18 letters

wait what?

@thecoder16 etaoinshrdl....

and would explain the weirdness
...or maybe not

oops i think you've misunderstood me again

8:15 PM
@thecoder16 these are guesses based on common letters

no i meant the simple sub

anyway, with q=e:
ekekmojjxgbwenedywcfackjejkwaajekkoklabyawemzezanexemnzzeenwyalaeakxycamlyfmfmef‌ebkanlkoffwyo

how did you get q=e

q is the most common letter in the text

8:16 PM
you literally said that too

e is the most common letter in english

yea but its a different substitution

4 mins ago, by thecoder16
it's what gerbil said at first

i misunderstood your simple sub lol

4 mins ago, by thecoder16
q-e

8:17 PM
what did you think simple substitution was?

so what did you mean....

@Deusovi the way of reducing to 18 letters was is already there
there are 18 different letters...

okay, so where does the substitution come in?

it's not exactly a substitution per se
so with 18 different letters

8:17 PM
...

and the numbers
you have Q14

I am so confused

how can you turn that into a single letter

a1z26
but that doesn't help

but that gives way too many Fs to be reasonable

8:18 PM
and that gives?
but
q14 is one of the 18 letters

wait. so we are doing a1z26 on the frequencies?

along with a11, k10, y6, etc.

and then anagramming?

Q14 is a single letter

what?

8:19 PM
...I'm not sure where you went to elementary school, but "q14" is not a letter
oh
it's Caesar shifting
by the frequency

oh...

there were literally no hints to that

this is going to be hard to apply too

and you gave us hints in the OPPOSITE direction in chat

sorry i assumed it was common

8:20 PM
assumed what was common? shifting letters by the number of times they appear?

so q still = e
now I see where you got that from

@Deusovi well the point of the "it was organized" was for you to sort by letter

i guess i didn't give any hints to combine
that was a mistake

EHFAEFSPDOSSCLEULE

8:21 PM
yes

that's impossible

you can't see any words in that?

okay, not impossible, but there are way too many options

...
anagrams are for short strings. not long ones

3 words, and one of them is a user on this site

8:22 PM
^

I see clue

wait, one of them is a user???

maybe ffao?

i'll definitely improve all this in my next puzzle

ffao clue something

8:22 PM
ADEEHHHOONNRTT is an anagram of something. solve it.

i see your point

:P

this needs more clues

and clue is wrong

we were just blind guessing till now
is ffao right?

8:23 PM
and now we're still blind guessing

@BeastlyGerbil Silly Gerbil

ffao is right
@n_palum ?

I'm confused @_@
Was replying to something shh

EHESPDSSCLEULE

@n_palum well obviously we had to take the letters, shift them by their frequencies, and then anagram them

8:24 PM
remaining letters
yeah n_palum you have the right to be confused

@Deusovi well obviously I don't have the patience or time for that XD

for future reference, ~10 letters is where an anagram starts to become tough to solve by hand. ~13 is where it becomes tough to solve with computer. ~16 is basically impossible unless you have a good idea of what you're looking for

CLUELESS?

no
also the first words is FFAO'S

oh, of course, it's possessive

8:25 PM
oh

sorry

FFAO'S CHEESES PULLED
clearly

lol
no

FFAO'S PULSES LEECHED

Of couuuurse

8:26 PM
I'm thinking HELPLESS?

got it - SLEEP SCHEDULE
which I never would have been able to find without this:

damn ninja'd me

yeah...

Yeah was using an online tool too

You can also get SPEECHLESS DUEL :P

8:27 PM
so FFAO'S SLEEP SCHEDULE
what about it?

that's the answer

yawns

the "question no one has been able to answer"

I'm leaving XD

8:27 PM
the "huge mystery you can have the pleasure of thinking about"

um.... ok
@Deusovi you answer, you got most of that
And then can someone help me figure out why parts 2 and 4 here = A?

for 2, those seem to be anagram-ish, but they don't come out to regular English words
they're all alphabetized, which is at least a clear hint that anagramming is going on

moehmm noticed both those points
but yeah weird anagrams

@thecoder16 - you accepted and unaccepted my answer! D:

gonna wait like usual
or should i not this time

8:38 PM
ah - doesn't matter
just didn't realize that's what you were doing

@deus ankoganit found out the second letter thing
not me. I noticed it later and mentioned it, but he'd said it further up in chat and we all missed it

oh whoops
(if you're curious, my example ADEEHHHOONNRTT anagrammed to "ON THE OTHER HAND")

easy to see once you know it, but really hard to figure out without knowing it

yep i'll make things more obvious
next time

8:43 PM
Its a good puzzle, just needed a hell of a lot more clues

yes
i think i'll make a part 2 where you actually decode the sleep schedule :P
@BeastlyGerbil by the way, did you ever figure out where the question mark came from?

nope
I know its from on site
thats it though

it isn't

oh...

I wrote a ? into my java editor

8:46 PM
where then?

but it showed up as a syntax error

so i put it into a string
which made it orange
i use netbeans

I recognise the font and stuff from ffao's shiro script. thats where

9:21 PM
I understand ffaos sleep schedule though

9:32 PM
^ Why is Sphinx telling us about these when they have been deleted? (And not even deleted *just now*.)
[EDITED to add:] Oops, ignore that. For some reason I was looking at an ancient version of TSL which hadn't updated itself in the light of new messages. Apologies for the nonsense.

2 hours later…
11:20 PM
@n_palum ... reall
really
