Q: Can we make a new tag for puzzles that are like chess puzzles, but generalised to all games, and also specific to those kinds of puzzles

Destructible LemonExample question So, I make or have made a puzzle where someone has to find a move sequence in a certain number of moves or achieve some other objective just like a chess puzzle. however, there is no specific tag for this kind of puzzle that I can tell. Even confined to chess, chess is not spec...

1:41 AM
I was going to post a math puzzle, but it looks like several similar puzzles were closed for being too mathy. Oh well

2:16 AM
well... it has to be an interesting puzzle. it can't be a straightfoward computation through some textbook method. But if it's interesting it could be on topic and welll received.

2:33 AM
We are definitely more lenient with it than on the past - earlier it seemed like many puzzles I wanted open were closed, while now most puzzles I vote to close don't get closed

I still think possibly this is too routine. I think there may be a nice solution involving inversion, but I couldn't get it to work.
The problem is to find the radius of the red circle, if that's a unit square

3:12 AM
challenging

radius is zero (rounded to nearest unit)

it's a little tricky, but pretty borderline as a puzzle. I posted it here because it took me too long to draw that to just throw it away

@Alconja >_>

3:31 AM
is there any ill effect by writing non-existent tags in a post, if you're talking about a new tag?

You mean just writing ? No, it will just 404 as a link.

3 hours later…
6:37 AM
Again, this is what happens when the door is left ajar:
And I'm not even a fan of Elton John, but on my goodbye tour someone almost named Alice came and gave me a turn. I promised her that I wouldn't be a love who lies sleeping. Another dear dealt us this next one, and then I'll go back to kickshit music:
Misspellings on purpose:

I'm planning on making another homeworlds puzzle

links?

^ just being lazy. I used to know how to look up everything anyone said.
Before then I used to know what they would say.
(No need to tell me how to look up things. This time around it's called willful ignorance.)
@DestructibleLemon , please make it easy on (some of) us and drop a link. I, for one, have a surplus of positive associations with you and what you might mean.

6:52 AM
Thank you.

no problem

I wish I had posted that!

why though

Or even thought of it.

what do you mean by that?
I simply made a chess puzzle, but homeworlds instead of chess

6:54 AM
The first puzzle is to figure out what the puzzle. Thank you for as much.
Others will solve it.

thanks for a compliment?
you puzzle me

Welcome! I prowse the exhibits and hope nobody notices.

I'll be back

Next time.

ok so, I guess I'll start work on the puzzle now...
except my cat might have other plans

6:59 AM
Kitten on the keyboards.

no, he tends to be better behaved than that.

Purrrrrrrr.

besides, I plan on working in analogue with my physical pyramid set
anyway, I'm wondering whether I should make the title a hint...
I think not

You already did.

I think I'll use it as a chance to coin a naming scheme for this puzzle genre
I'll call it homeworldsmate or similar
oof. my cat claws me

7:04 AM
Welcome again. Every scrape heals and reminds.
I've never been scraped the same way twice.
But the scars show all those first-time scrapes.

he doesn't mean it though.

Right on!
The same kitty-cat (who is a metaphor for other people) has claws at the end of his/her teetth.
And behind them a lick of love

I think I'll bring the cat with me whilst I puzzle construct
temporary toodles

Again, next time. Thank you for this time.
I played this one for another dear and they took it all wrong:
"If I promise you the moon and the sun, would you believe it?"
That's how I meant it. Anyone can paint a pretty picture, but it's only what we want others to see.
Any time someone goes to that much trouble, I lather.
Rinse and repeat.
Welcome to my farewell tour! It might be the show that never ends.
"Right before your eyes, we pull laughter from the skies."

prog_SAHILIt's an easy one, lets see who gets it the fastest.

I went to make a puzzle but ended up having dinner
...
well, I guess I'll start work on the puzzle for real now perhaps?

!
Please digest carefully along the way.
I have, by latest count, about 5 puzzles that I hope will work their way out.
(It's actually more, but some of them are better reswallowed.)

ok, I've gotten all the pieces ready for puzzle making

(I've done this for others too) In the meanwhile, music might help.
Don't make me go to the tavern in a valley . . . or to the lockup:
And there we go:

7:50 AM
I think I've got a good start here...
wait nvm... I should probably try puzzles as complex as that one later
puzzlemaking is hard

You're wasting your time here, @Destructible Lemon. Leave that to others. (That's a joke too. I'm also wasting your time here.)

I feel understood.

ok, I have a start
now to see if it has an end
I have to check if it has an end both ways, too

You get first crack at it! What fun! I'm guessing that the rest of us will never see it in this momentary form.

8:05 AM
looking at one end first, though

Ay yi yi!

not working out...

Ay yi yi!

I suppose I ought to start nearer the middle, nearer the end

I'm doing everything possible to not ask which middle is the end.
And now Big Brother and the Holding Company is playing.
And now it's The Fish:

8:18 AM
grrr this is hard
ok let's try this setup

new puzzles soon, with proper credit.

one end seems promising...

(catching up)

hmmmm, there's an issue

with the puzzle? or one end or the other? or with music?

8:29 AM
you shall see in good time, I guess
I think i can solve the issue if i park some pieces off to the side

In the meanwhile, great reference up there to the oompa loompa song.

oof i just made the same mistake a twice in a row
fix'd

You are having fun!

wait a minute...
oof big problem

The best puzzles are those along the way. I once told someone that she was my favorite.
And that I never wanted to solve her. She took that well.
And then I apologized for being so objective.
The only reason I chose the name @humn was because @rat was already taken. As if anyone asked. But, one of these days, with the help of actual humans, I'll become one.
Signed, Pinocchio . . .
In the meanwhile I've been mistaken for being hominid. As long as the checks don't bounce, I will.
To prattle on, . . . enuf sed.

8:56 AM
Full blast:
(That was for you Jonathan Allan, wherever you are.)

gah this is hard

If you're talking about working out your next puzzle, @Destructible Lemon, the hard part is the best!

Nobody knew making puzzles could be so complicated

Oh now you think you're repealing Obama-whatsitsname.
Who are you? WRU?
No need to ACK.

ok, here's another start for me to begin examining ends

9:05 AM
spell!
. . . Just whenever you're ready . . .

grrr puzzle making is hard

I still say that the best puzzles are those that don't see the light of day. Or night.

ok, it's possible I've made one end, however the other end might be annoying

Which end is which can be left to interpretation.

9:10 AM
My poor father just recently realized how many times I teetered on destruction.
I told him that it just ain't fair. And he doesn't even speak English.
It ... just ... ain't ... fair ...!!!
And yet everything we share is a byproduct of that injustice.... @Rand al'else?

this is making me mad
ok let me get a piece of paper

Been there.

gonna make a game tree and count turns

I gonna get me a piece of paper.

9:24 AM
My dropouts will become more frequent but it's only recently that my drop-ins have been allowed. ... I've helped everyone else become published and now my toes tip in as I traipse out ... (And, no, this is not an advert. If you even suspect that, more power to you!)
possibly redundant:
jeff beck and jan hammer earth in seach

I think this works actually!

You dog!

:?

9:33 AM
Sunshine!
(Today I feel like I understand every language, as, after more than half a century someone touched me, physically, how I've touched everyone else, verbally.) (Yeah, in the meanwhile, I've gone around trying to act like a universal interpreter. But someone spoke my language.
)))))
It was a very nice goodbye sentiment.

too many close parens?

Learn lisp. It could happen to the worst of us.
Nobody else wants to disturb my neighbs? Time to rotate the dials.
(Hello, @Maria, if that's really you. I have mathematics challenge that I hope spills over to phsycs.)
It's about information translation.
Or any other comers!.. It's about how to keep up with transliteration of information from one system to another.
I don't think it's possible.
I think it leaves a wrinkle or two in the carpet or whatever medium tries to keep up.
And the result could be energetic gain.
That's a farewell present.
I'll be back but in ever less respectable shreds.
It'll be fun, but it won't be a physics breakthrough.

9:54 AM
wait a minute...
one end is too simple

Fundamental property of strings (to be refuted): If it has one end, it has another.

uh
what about that bad boy?
d

@Destructible Lemonium! You are a musician.

or a linguist?
or a golfer?

Now you're a mindfucker. And well received, while I have one.

9:57 AM
I don't mean to string you along
@humn ._. not really sure about that

I don't mind. But others might if they had one.

i have to figure out how to complicate one end and simplify the other

(Whatever you made me do completely junked the connection. This message is courtesy of a bypass.)

Q: Solve this Substraction sudoku!

Jamal SenjayaThis is substraction sudoku. The rules are the same like common sudoku. With addition rules. In the row, the number in the orange box is the subtraction from its left side (sum of 3 squares) from its right side (sum of 3 squares). Also In the column, the number in the box is the subtraction f...

Not completely reconnected but on the way back. I helped put this thing together and if I can't work my way around it there's no hope. life puzzles.
(Or perhaps I worked my way around it too successfully. See you on the other/same side.)
(There's hope. Stay tuned.)

10:41 AM
(And now it's well past time for bed.)

11:36 AM
@EricTressler I can do it but not very nicely. (Radius of purple is 1/6 by a little Pythagoras/coordinates; maybe there's a better way to get that. Then use Descartes twice to get radius of pink and then red.) Doesn't seem all that puzzle-y unless there's a cleverer trick to it.

11:54 AM
didn't know about Descartes before, but looks like you can prove that the radii are of the form 1/(n^2 + 2) using it.. maybe there's an clever alternate proof of that?

I made a different puzzle that I'm about to post. it's a bit more complex despite being one move rather than 2

12:45 PM
Posted my puzzle, it'll be some hours 'till i can respond to any complaints in the mean-time though, seeya

Q: Homeworldsmate - Inheritance or Insurance fraud

Destructible LemonHomeworldsmate: a chess puzzle (directmate e.g.) but with Homeworlds instead of chess. That's a term I just coined/made up, and since I'm currently the one making these, you're just going to have to accept it. While I'm inventing names, I'll give Left player* a name. Her name is Lee. Right playe...

@GarethMcCaughan no, that's about it, which is why I didn't put it up as a puzzle. It's similar to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sangaku, which are sometimes described as puzzles, and sometimes as problems.

Q: Cryptic crossword (jigsaw puzzle)

postmortesThis is a jigsaw puzzle cryptic crossword: the clues are listed in alphabetical order of answer. Answers are fitted into the grid to produce a valid crossword solution. Q: First-Move Advantage

AranlydeHere's a quick one. The final answer is a 6-letter word. First player advantage? I don't believe in anything like that. It's just an excuse people use to explain away why they lost. Instead, victory depends on which side gets the next move.

I see why nobody uses tables on P.se

grrr i had a good puzzle but then rules inconsistencies messed it up

9:58 PM
Ha! Glad to see that I figured out the solution you actually intended despite having the wrong rules :-).

yeah...
well then... thanks for solving again i guess
apart from the whole "thought that way was impossible", was it a good solve?

Yeah. It took a fair while before I spotted that possibility, but I don't know whether I'd have got there faster if I hadn't been working with rules that forbade it.
I like the terminology in your title, by the way.
I'll edit my answer to make it clearer what's going on with the different available rulesets.

new ruleset page I guess...
sorry about that

Incidentally, I spent a few minutes trying to figure out whether there was a way for L to set up a situation in which R was required to make a suicidal move. But of course R always has the option of doing nothing at all, so that was hopeless :-).

10:46 PM
incidentally, I'm not sure whether you're allowed to do nothing at all by looney official rules
I'll assume it's allowed though
