11:14 PM
hey
@rfusca just said hi and then got called away from my pc, sorry

@ACube wtf...

@jrista lol
ya that was..umm..fun

yeah yeah! I took some pictures of he he he This and he he he That!
omg
what a twit

ya, i tried to be nice

Man, good thing I wasn't in here today
because I am NOT in a nice mood

11:25 PM
lol

haha

I would have ripped the guy a new one
and WTF is up with our photo contest
READ THE DAMN RULES, PPL!

lol

air planes flying through the night reflected in the water

in regards to which part?
oh

11:26 PM
trees, a blown out sky, and some random building
a nice looking but otherwise boring tunnel
I think maybe the most interesting this week is the gears and junk

where is the photo contest?

but....seriously?
our weekly header photo contest...in meta

@jrista ya, i don't like the shallow DoF on the gears though, its distracting. I keep wanting to like it

i can't be bothered to look for it and I figured you were there so could easily pop me a link :)

Q: Weekly Featured Image: Jul 4, '11

Rowland ShawThis is the place to submit and vote on photos for the week of 4 July to be featured on the main site. This contest should showcase your best quality work, demonstrating at least moderate skill with a camera and a general understanding of the artistic aspects of photography. Remember, the selecte...

11:28 PM
lol

found it

jam, your a lazy git!
THERE! Look at it! Its the second freaking sentence!
"This contest should showcase your best quality work, demonstrating at least moderate skill with a camera and a general understanding of the artistic aspects of photography."

lol, dude, chill - I am there :p

no, not talking about you
talking about all the people who keep submitting total crap

"jam your a lazy git"
haha

11:29 PM
that was like, 15 seconds ago...get with the times man

it's you're btw :D

my auto-correct doesn't auto-correct that
and I'm also a lazy git :P

the peregrin is quite nice, bit different

yeah
but its still just one photo
we should have 8-10 nice photos to choose from

the tube corridor is... well, a tube tunnel
there are more interesting tube tunnels

11:31 PM
yeah

the composition of the gears is good
i would enter something but i never have the inclination to crop something to that silly size
i went out in the sun yesterday and photographed the local red kites: jameswheelerphotography.com/Animals/wildlifeandanimals/…

it is a pretty silly size
@JamWheel nice shot
those birds frame beautifully against a blue sky

it just means you have to faff about - nobody composes for that shape, so it potentially ruins the image
thanks man
they do look good
they have camera detectors though, almost always do a runner when i have my camera

yeah

@JamWheel love that shot

11:34 PM
those birds of prey are always tough
There are a bunch of falcons in a park near me

@rfusca thanks

but with their eyes like radar, they can see you preparing your camera and take off

this lot are tame enough that if they are hungry you can walk about photographing them. I was stood in the road when I took that one lol
yeh, lots of patience and missed shots
handy having such an abundance of them living in the area
I took a couple of others but that is the best

@JamWheel that one's pretty good too, but i like the other better

@JamWheel I like this one. Love the light coming through the feathers
lol...art is so subjective

11:37 PM
i think the pose in the first is more dynamic

@JamWheel yup

@JamWheel indeed

but the light coming through the wings is good and pleased i managed to keep some detail despite the light being behind
the 2nd shot was almost full frame, the first was more of a crop
and that was with my 2x converter on
which allegedly takes rubbish photos

which lens?

it doesn't perform so well in poor light but works fine in the sun.
@jrista 300mm f/2.8

11:39 PM
oh, 600mm
thats why they are so close
7D?

1dmkiv

1d iv

the first is ISO 1000
2nd ISo800

ya @jam rolls in style

1.3x crop?

11:40 PM
and last ISO1000 again
yeah 1.3

yeah, thats nice
you got an effective 780mm there

yeh
hand held baby
lol
bit wibbly

the iso and af on that body are second to none though

the nikon high ISO is pretty good

I would never be able to take a shot like that with the same lens+extender and my 450D

11:41 PM
but the pixels vs sensor size ratio is pretty much spot on i think

yeah
probably a huge benefit for such a long focal length like that

the 1Ds mkII makes some lovely clean shots though
same mp but full frame
you put an iso 100 shot from each next to each other and the full frame is sooooo much cleaner

i bet

hey, i managed some cracking shots on my 400D with my 100-400 :)

its when you start amplifying the signal that newer technology really shines though
"cracking shots"?

11:44 PM
do any of the cropped sensor Canon sensors complete with the new Sony sensor yet?

great shots
@rfusca no idea
Sigma have an interesting 46mp sensor... 3 layers of image or something

I think I just accidentally fixed two bugs in my code...

lol

bah
sigma does NOT have a 46mp sensor
its a 15mp sensor, that senses color on three layers

and queue @jrista's Sigma Foevon rant...

11:46 PM
yeh
interesting sensor though none the less

I don't like bullshit marketing
its interesting

they do state on the marketing it is a 3 layer 15mp shot

but they need to stop messing around with marketing ploys, and start making competitive cameras WITH that sensor

at least they do on what I have read
heh

yeah, if you dig into the details...but all over the net its described as a 46mp sensor
and I've read dozens of threads all over about people drooling all over the "highest resolution sensor" for mainstream cameras
it makes me sick how easily people buy into the hype

11:47 PM
heh
that will always happen though

yeah
the sad thing is
while the sensor is pretty cutting edge
and definitely has its merits

people do it with news stories, they even read what they want it to say when the written version of the 'facts' clearly say something else

the camera body it lives in is a piece fo crap

@jrista yes!
its like wtf

foveon die-hards try to write that off as "oh, you get used to it"...

11:49 PM
i read an encouraging review of it in Black & White Photography magazine

and perhaps you do...but still, its a PIECE OF CRAP
@JamWheel I think all the reviews are pretty encouraging

i also saw a weird looking and very price Mamiya advertised

I would love to see Canon make a foveon-like sensor
at least then, I could get a decent camera body crafted with some finesse

@jrista i know i saw a story about them doing that, but now I can't find it :(

I really wish you could

11:50 PM
i want them to steer their pro bodies away from video first

I've been searching everywhere for that article
@JamWheel why?

as soon as you start diversifying a tool designed to do a specific job, it is in danger of not being so good at its main function - especially if you push too far down that route

maybe...

i can understand it at the consumer end
broaden your consumer base

the 5D is pretty superb at both photography and video though

11:52 PM
fine
but pro bodies people want it for photographs

thats not really true

yeah they are now, aside from some rolling shutter issues

part of the reason the 5D II is such a success is its video
there are entire movies and TV shows filmed with the 5D

and its failure is the auto focus... which maybe they would have noticed if they weren't dicking about with the video :P

well
I doubt its AF would have been any different with or without video

11:53 PM
yeh, they filmed the last episode of house on one of the series with one

they just put a shitty AF system in it
its the same AF system in more than half of canon cameras

it is an extra thing to test though - whilst the differences aren't there now, all the video heads will be chomping at extended video features etc

the AF issues and rolling shutter issues are supposed to be fixed with the 5D III

more focus taken away from taking photos

again, maybe

11:54 PM
have they announced that yet?

depends on how you test
@JamWheel not officially, but the latest rumors have been solidifying

if they get their shit together, they might get away with it - but it is a rocky path to start down if taken lightly i should think

I'm hoping they announce it in august
extensive testing on both fronts can be done simultaneously, if you have two teams

i would rather then spent some extra £ on R&D on sensor tech or something than fiddling about putting video in the camera

since video is a HUGE selling factor for the 5D, and since its still the only real camera that serious Canon landscape photographers use, I can't imagine them skimping out on the testing on either front

11:56 PM
on the 1dIV it is very much an afterthought and feels tacked on
not that I would ever use it

yeah, I can't say much about the 1D IV
it may indeed be cheap

i spose that is how they got away with the 5dII's shocking AF
landscapers use MF for hyperfocal distance :)

well
sometimes

well, most of the landscape togs I know spend most of their time looking for max front to back sharpness

its not always just "hyperfocal"....most of the time we use MF with live view...kind of like having a mini large format view camera

11:58 PM
don't get me started on frickin live view :)

ok, lets hear it

nope
lol

as a landscape photographer, I love live view

i need to go to bed and that will cause an extra 40 mins of ranting at least

lol

11:58 PM
i can see it might be handy in some scenarios
and frickin wiggly screens on the back like you get on those handycams

wiggly?

you know, the multi angle things
i tell you

articulating?
