1:29 AM
@rfusca it's interesting; I'm going to have to read the manual about it
I think it's clutched, so I'm not driving the focus motor, but I want to be sure
1.5x zoom is really not very much

@EvanKrall oh, i thought it was a fully manual focus
many of the tokina are

it doesn't have an internal motor

@EvanKrall but the motor in the d7000 will drive it?

yep

oh, cool

1:38 AM
it's pretty nice
I think it turns the right way, too

thats cool
i just don't shoot wide too much right now

I just gave my d3000 and 18-55 to my girlfriend in ohio, so my widest lens was 35mm; figured now would be a good time to get a wide angle

sure

do you have a superwide?

nope
just the 17 on the kit

1:41 AM
18? or do you have something else?

err sorry 18
what other lenses do you have?

2:14 AM
currently I have the tokina 11-16, nikon 35/1.8 dx, and an old vivitar push-pull 70-200 f/4.5 manual focus that I picked up for $30

interesting lineup

used to have 18-55, 35, and 70-200, which covered most of my bases pretty well.

ya
eventually i want a 28-70'ish 2.8, a 100'ish macro, and a 70-200 2.8, then sell my kit lens and my 70-300mm 4-5.6

3:17 AM
28's a bit limiting for a crop sensor, right?
oh, you also wanted to move to full frame

@cabbey I've been lurking a bit... Seems like parenting-SE needs to 'find its voice' a little bit still. Talk about a topic rife with opinions and subjectivity! :-)

it would be awesome to get some psychologists/sociologists who actually know what they're talking about

Especially when you factor in that its a worldwide audience... Interesting to see the guns/violence bias "claws" come out... Probably only a matter of time before the puritanism of America vs. the rest of the world gets tossed into that mix like a grenade. :-)
@EvanKrall Yeah, I agree. A few subject-matter experts would probably keep the opinions from swinging too far out of hand into 'pitchforks and torches' land. :-)

has the vaccines-causing-autism debate shown up yet?

4:01 AM
@EvanKrall eventually a full frame for the types of photography i enjoy and i just don't shoot below 30 much on my crop

what license are all the text and images on the site, again?
CC-by-SA 2? or 3?
oh I guess text is cc-wiki?

Q: Do Photos Uploaded Here Have to Be CC-Wiki Too?

NickSince everything on StackExchange sites are licensed with cc-wiki, does that affect photos which are uploaded using the new upload tool? For instance, if someone were to upload a photograph they took, and was asking a question such as why the lighting was weird, or how to prevent the bokeh from ...

I believe we just got switched over to 3. Saw a @mattdm post on meta.

hmm
man I need to go home; I'm still at the office

lol
@JayLancePhotography hows the building coming?

bbl

4:15 AM
ok the questions over at skeptics.stackexchange are mostly laughable

@rfusca Just wrapped up mudding and taping today. That's a thankless job, I'll tell ya! Starting tomorrow it's on to primer and paint...

fun stuff
shaping up like you want?

@rfusca Seems to be. Mudding was rough for me... Just not very good at it. Honestly at this point I'm really looking forward to just having it done. Having my office as the living room hasn't been real successful with Abby in the house. :-)
Not that that is a surprise to anyone. :-)

lol ya, i understand that
its rough when i try to work from home and watch the kido

Yessir. Even though most of the kiddo wrangling (at this point) is on my wife's shoulders, the living room is still just not the place to be... Everything in my house routes through it, so there's not way to not be distracting.

4:21 AM
yup
i'm gonna have about $300 to throw into some new photo eq...what to get, what to get...

Nice! Oh the choices...
Commence research overload!

i know!
i'm debating over trying to win a 90-100'ish used macro lens on ebay or some studio lighting/backdrop equipment
when i say "studio lighting" i don't really mean..studio lights, rather another hotshoe flash, 2 stands and some light modifiers

I gotcha. Man, that's a tough one... Both? ;-)

lol
thanks for the additional 300 ;)

Just keep checkin' the mail. The check will arrive 'soon'.

4:26 AM
ok, i'm just gonna hold my breath till it does
i'm thinking the lens if i can, i can get the other stuff in pieces at a time, but its harder to get ahold of more than 100 or so at a time around here before something "important" happens and it need to be spent on stuff like "food" or "clothes"

I hear ya. My initial reaction was honestly 'Get the glass. There's a lot you can improv when it comes to studio stuff, but you'll never be able to improvise up a lens.'

yup
@JayLancePhotography hey, on some of your timelapse stuff from a couple of months ago - where the frame is moving also. I understand you're moving a crop around since HD is much lower than your camera res - was that manually done or is there a program to do that?

4:50 AM
@rfusca Both, actually. I use Adobe After Effects and for complex paths, or paths where I'm changing the speed of the movement I usually build 'em myself. If I'm doing something simple (like a basic left-to-right pan) there's a keyframing tool in AE that I let do the work...

hmm, ok
i'll have to get AE at some point

5:21 AM
It's a beast of a program, and honestly for most people Adobe Premiere is a better place to start because Premiere will do most of what AE can do (with regards to panning time-lapse photography) but the learning curve isn't quite as steep, nor is it as expensive... AE is where you want to go if you want truly anal retentive levels of control over the objects you're working with. :-)

Evening all

This is the only active Chatroom I could find on 3 domains..

I suppose it depends on your definition of 'active.' ;-)

Active: Not dead.

5:34 AM
@rfusca The timescapes guy has a dolly that slowly shifts his camera; that might be a fun DIY project

6:17 AM
@Chacha102 we have dead times too

2 hours later…
7:56 AM
like now, for instance

8:48 AM
apparently nikon leaked the release of a 50mm f/1.8 AF-S lens dpreview.com/news/1104/11041310nikon501p8g.asp
which sounds nice, especially if it's under $300, but really Nikon? 58mm?
who has 58mm filters?

@EvanKrall Think I've got a bunch of 58mm filters from an old lens :)

oh, I guess it matches the AF-S 50/1.4
which, oddly, has a smaller filter diameter than the AF-S 35/1.4
actually never mind, that makes sense; since the 35 is a wide-angle on full frame.

1 hour later…
10:12 AM
I think there is a odd perception that bigger front elements must equal better quality optics
OK, in most cases, that is the case, but there are exceptions

is there any reason why a 17-55 f/2.8 needs a 77mm front element? probably not.
but if you're going to spend >$1k on your base zoom and 1.5-2.5k on your telephoto zoom, it'd be nice if everything were the same size so you could keep the same filters

3 hours later…
1:09 PM
@EvanKrall meta.photo.stackexchange.com/questions/714/… It's three now. Jeff Atwood says that the version in the link URL is authoritative.

3 hours later…
3:59 PM
i'm quite confused why anybody would pay 20 dollars for this box

2 hours later…
5:43 PM
@rfusca Pure speculation on my part, but... If someone had a used and/or gray market lens, putting it in a box with all the proper packaging could maybe allow someone to sell it as 'official,' 'new,' etc. on eBay and get a higher price for it than they might otherwise...?

hmmm i guess
go figure
