We're evaluating the feasibility of sponsoring a member of the photo community to speak at a conference in 2011.
Speaking is a relatively big "ask", so this needs to be planned many months in advance. Let's get started!
We'd like the community to establish where ...

well I think somebody like Jay would be great. Professional in the business, active in the site, generally well spoken. However the guy just had a baby and has a active business.
@EvanKrall You can also use the filter materials here amasci.com/amateur/irgoggl.html to cover just the built-in flash. I've tried this and it works well. The difficulty is attaching it in an elegant way.
Wow. I appreciate the votes of confidence. I'd happily go do something like that if the community supported it... The two shows that I'm most familiar with and are also the largest here in the US, anyway are already done for the year unfortunately... (PPAs ImagingUSA and WPPIs WPPI Las Vegas). I wonder if the SE folks would consider pushing it out until 2012, 'cause ImagingUSA is pretty-much the end-all as far as conventions go... Hmmm...
Actually, now that I've said it I'm not sure I could back up my 'largest' assertion for those conventions... It's really more of an assumption based on the membership levels of the PPA and WPPI. So if there's something bigger out there, I'm happy to be wrong on my claim. :-)
I just posted some initial thoughts on the meta thread. Short answer: if the community would be behind me going, and the opportunity was available, I'd be more than happy to go do something like that... Sounds like fun!
wee bit of birthing issues right now, if you think folks get emotional on photos.SE, just imagine how it gets when you replace metaphorical children with actual children.

The user Zypher has very little reputation, but is able to close questions without reaching the limit because he works for SE. By not letting the community vote (i.e. 5 of the top 17 users) it seems that he is taking away from the development of the community. Many closed questions are not even ...
@EvanKrall I didn't use duct-tape; I used clear tape with careful folding. It actually looked pretty nice. Unfortunately, I couldn't get it thin enough so that the flash would latch closed.
