“For Lack of a Bed” by John Wiswell is a funny short story about somebody finding a novel way to deal with their chronic pain.

hmmm
somehow on meta i'm failing to find a way to phrase that i think rpg.se shouldn't just experience market forces
or that our miniscule presence of non-D&D games is an indicator we're somehow under-servicing the hobby
like, there are actually places full of fate and pbta discussion, and very little of it is happening here

@doppelgreener What do those places have that we don't?

5:24 PM
@NautArch a format that's meant for discussion and not Q&As
would be my guess

1 hour later…
6:42 PM
@NautArch well, that's the question, isn't it

To what extent do those also have D&D etc. discussions? I would expect specialization (to use a nice term) to be a factor in this

7:04 PM
one of them was in fact the formerly super active Google+ Fate community
there is a central Cortex discord and a central PBTA discord
i think it's easy to conclude that yes, they are for discussion and are not Q&A sites. how many other Q&A sites actually exist? but there's also questions that need answering

Sure, though I suspect from the PoV of most askers, a discussion forum is gonna handle Q&A better than a Q&A site handles discussion

That's coming from the "oh well, nobody wants RPG.SE" angle. I'm interested in what's going on here that it's not servicing these groups.
i mean, sure, some things definitely make discussion a better place for stuff. i'm not sure i'm ready to conclude "yep, RPG.SE just sucks for every other game and there's nothing more we could do" however.

That was definitely not the point I was trying to make either
More that that asymmetry will affect where there is previous other activity, which I would assume affects where things get asked
But that isn't doing much more than going back to visibility of material, and that's neither new, nor exceptionally addressable

7:21 PM
yeah that's fair & true

@NautArch Priorities other than SEO for attracting users?
A behavior reinforcement system based on individual interactions rather than distanced numerical approval by the crowd?

Hmm, I wondher how much hot network questions bias the DnD weight

Systems that provide options for self-moderation?

9:43 PM
@AndrasDeak Indirectly, in that they measure traffic on the question and D&D questions get measurably more local and SEO traffic.
When my non-D&D questions hit HNQ it was often a system that was "hot" at the time (like Fate during the Fate Core Kickstarter) and/or a franchise with some heft outside the TRPG scene (eg Dresden Files), but most consistently my question just had an "ooh I'll click that because I'm curious without even checking the tags" title.

9:55 PM
so the bottom line is that clickbait keeps small tags afloat :P

Gotta get that SEO somehow.
