12:10 AM
@Derpy I hope you are satisfied you uncouth lout :P

2 hours later…
2:29 AM
Heh

5 hours later…
7:40 AM
@trogdor who did you call "uncouth"?
(whining tecnique #2 - activate)
Jokes aside, I still have to replace mine in the first place.

lol

8:10 AM
saw this on Arqade
for some reason, it reminds me something, but I can't focus.
Probably just the art-style?
Tried to look for any plagiarism claim, found nothing, so probably is just art-style.
Still, weird. Found many nonsense claims about old Disney's movies being copies of other works but nothing about Atlantis. Is Secret of Blue Water really that old? :P

8:26 AM
it makes me think of Avatar
colour coded villagers and the MC design resembled Katara/Korra with the colour scheme and hair arrangement

8:37 AM
@Carcer could be, yes. Thad said, I was looking for something more specific, but as I said, probably it is just the art direction

I assume it might be the art direction
I mean it says it's from the same Studio that made Moana and Frozen, in my book that would be enough to account for it looking familliar
which I agree, it does look like something I have seen before
but I think that's what it is

mumble.... Nope, maybe Carcer is right.
yep, probably this explain why I had that felling that something looked kinda familiar

I mean that's fair enough there

the precise colour palette is very Katara, the hairstyle more Korra

@Carcer well, at least so far the plot doesn't seem very Avatar from what I know

8:52 AM
@Derpy a hero with a big weird animal companion must restore peace to a land with divided peoples?

yeah I was going to say
it's not the exact same buuuuut
it's like mostly the same

yeah
in broad strokes at least those plotlines can see each other and wave

the dragon thing just happens to be just about the only difference
yeah

she's even been trained from childhood for her special purpose

@Carcer .... Have you ever seen Atlantis?

8:55 AM
I actually have not

@Carcer Good. Keep it that way.
just some "casual similarities" like they called them.

sorry I've never heard of Kimba

@Carcer yep, exactly that.
Mind you, both works are heavily influenced by Verne books, so I could live with the plot similarities (even when those include elements that Nadia specifically made up)
the character design....
looks a little too similar.
Oh, but I now notice that they hired Blue Spirit too....

10:03 AM
@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica do you know if there is any way to check progression towards that?

@Derpy I recall a discussion of one of the target progresses, and the advice amounted to estimating time based on the way ordinals scale, with each . . . by now I forgot what benchmark . . . corresponding to a threefold increase in time required. So something like if you can get benchmark X in a kilosec, you can reach X+1 in under an hour.
I don't remember which one of the achievements it was, nor the way old big omegas work.
The more I played, the less of a grasp of magnitudes of the omega notations I had.

4 hours later…
2:33 PM
@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica lucky you, the more I play, the more I get the felling that the game is cheating in some way.
I didn't try to check the math, but sometime it feels like there are big jumps in progression, that don't feel natural in away.

@Derpy There most definitely are jumps. There are breakpoints. Shifting ordinal orders-of-magnitude tend to suddenly give significantly more points than the previous value, for example.

Suddenly, you can get 10 dark manifold in 30 minutes, then the next one would take probably days...... you go onward with cardinals and so, checking now and then... but things don't seem to improve. Then suddenly BOOMMMM another 10 dark manifolds.

2:56 PM
.... I had forgot the "Spider Rarity" meme.
@trogdor seem we may have solved the problem

@Derpy Oh wait, I remember her transmuting into a spidery weaver in some fic (indirectly, through mentions on the other discussion vector).

@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica there is an explanation for that. I think it all started from some weird animation "error" in an episode.

@Derpy Ah, I was curious if there's some deeper history behind the idea.

@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica this scene.
taken from an episode where they are stuck at Twilight home because of a storm outside.
Rarity explains how to get to bed without ruining the cover.
If you notice, the animation style makes it so that it almost look like she is just an head with legs

@Derpy . . . and make-up.

3:05 PM
then some Arbriged version (never got into those, I think it was called "Friendship is Witchcraft" turned the scene in a song
Note: the song music is actually from another episode (art of the DRESS)

@Derpy Either way, the 'those are extra legs' hypothesis seems like something that only makes sense in hindsight after seeing an arachnoid version, but when looking forward from the clip alone, it seems like one of those very wild fan theories.

@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica from what I get, it was started from a remake of the video that redraw the scene - resulting in her looking like a spider because the bed cover was to flat for a body to be there
can't find it now, oddly.
Probably one of the lost videos

3:30 PM
The way you describe it doesn't make me *automatically* think of arachnid bodies, but I guess there's something in the lost video that's hard to convey through a description.

Tangential to the avatars topic: what's the real meaning of the future refusing to change phrase? I looked through the wiki page but it seems to be tying into some additional content?

@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica as for the spider, I remember someone commenting that the video looked like a spider was walking on the cover, someone animated that so that Rarity was basically an head with four legs going left and right on the cover, the result looking far more of a spider going back and forth.
Don't know if that started all, but it is the only instance I can think of of a "justified" spider Rarity meme.
FlutterTree, IE Fluttershy disguised as a Tree was clearly started by a single phrase she says in an episode, taken out of context - "I'd like to be a tree".
and then turned into a song reusing various clips from the episode.
(probably using autotune)
Again, there may be something more to it, but I wasn't really paying much attention to the meme fandom - I just know some fan made content - those that don't makes you want to wash your eyes with soap afterward.
@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica As for the avatar, which wiki did you look at?

@Derpy Some sort of Chrono wiki, IIRC. (I haven't played the series.)

@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica Chrono Trigger, first (and for some- last) game in the Chrono series
A game about time travel and an attempt to change the future

@Derpy I mean I don't remember whether the wiki was split between different episodes, or the precise name.
I am vaguely aware of the general themes from TVTropes from stumbling upon the topic years ago.

@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica basically the picture is the game Game Over screen.
The one you get if you fail to change the future basically.
as for the reason....
I switched to this avatar after a certain series of Meta tire-fires ....

3:45 PM
@Derpy Ah, so it's from the player characters' perspective. For some reason I got the impression that it's vaguely attributed to the big bad.

nope, it is the game over screen
the actual ending of the game was far better.
Until they messed things up with a sequel with different characters that basically made everything the original team did useless if not damaging

@Derpy Undermining the relevance/importance/usefulness of a previous iteration's actions seems to be a common thing in time travel scenarios.

3:59 PM
@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica this was a little different. Still explainable with "time travel magic", but it is pretty clear the sequel content wasn't planned originally
and the few references to the original game are scarce, to the point that the sequel can be safely played as a separate game.
And for some fans, that is actually a plus since to accept the sequel, you would have to assume that the original cast became a party of useless incompetent ex-heroes the instant the credit rolled.
Familiar with Dragonball by chance?

Not really.
The occasional memes and comparisons, but that's it.

mumble.... ok... let's see a fitting comparison.
The sequel makes almost as much sense as a Star Wars sequel that had Luke being defeated by... Jar Jar the Sith Lord.
The sequel has at least two problems. First, it has to retcon some elements of the first game to make room for more, so some things you knew in the first game now are considered wrong.

@Derpy Is the the implicit invocation of a popular but wild fan theory (Darth Jar Jar) deliberate here?

kinda, in the sense that if you think Jar Jar there is no way that character could survive a full movie without any help, let's alone be a menace to somebody.

@Derpy Also reportedly an adaptation of the New Testament, with a lot of creative freedom.

4:07 PM
@kviiri look, there is more Dragonball Trunks in there than religion.

That I won't dispute. But there's a lot of Dragonball Trunks there ;)

@kviiri also, want to see what "creative freedom" means, have the courage to play El Shaddai. That was based on the Book of Enoch.

I generally don't like JRPGs much, although I give many of them credit for worldbuilding, narrative, or sheer beauty. Chrono Trigger, I sat through in 2019, and it was no exception... although it sure was pretty.
But some things in Chrono Trigger were so well-done they got me thinking, WHY didn't Square bring them in Final Fantasy too? Because many of those ideas simply rocked.

Is the time travel cosmology in Chrono Trigger generally coherent and understandable?

Makes for a rather easy-to-follow narrative, yes, Doesn't exactly hold up to careful observation.

4:16 PM
@kviiri look, many things make more sense in the context of the first game alone.
@kviiri Just in case - El Shaddai is not a JRPG. It is a weird action game.
And when I say WEIRD I mean it.

There's fixed points in the timeline you can travel to. Can't remember the exact names for them but they're like "Dinosaur age" (millions of years in the past), Antiquity, Medieval Age, Present and Future. there's not much butterfly effect stuff going on except when it's related to a specific puzzle. For most intents and purposes the "eras" are more like worlds of their own with strategic interlinking bits.

@Derpy What sort and degree of weird? Like Antichamber? Like Edith Finch? Like Headlander? Some other sort and/or degree?

@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica I'll let you see by yourself.
And mostly one can't even say it is really "offensive" to religion or anything .... just a weird mix.

@Derpy Ah, so Requiem/Bayonetta grade.

@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica but Bayonetta at least had ... mostly... a world that seemed real
here, with the some exception, you travel places that seems like allucinations
probably, they were planning a sequel, but since it didn't sell a lot that was cancelled
It's a game that almost no one played
@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica in case you were interested.
As a game the bigger problem is that it is not that long, and the real extend of some mechanics are never explained to you.
Overall, you have to live with the added problem that it is an odd retelling of an actual biblical story, which may be a trigger for some players
As I said, there is nothing in the plot that is really offensive in that sense (it is not like they made some archangels evil for example) but it is still very odd to see what they did with the story. Furthermore, it is clear that they mixed different cultural influences in this (in a way, it even refers the Dreaming)

4:44 PM
@Derpy This is glorious.
Platform exclusivity though, it seems.

4:59 PM
@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica PS3 AND Xbox 360. No PC port

It is also a game that I think lost much of its side material
there is a manga prequel that probably never went outside Japan.
The game ends implying a sequel that was never made due to poor sales.
And years later, some characters made an appearance in a mostly unrelated game that was meant to take place in the same universe but modern days - a dungeon crawler

3 hours later…
8:08 PM
@Derpy lol

8:26 PM
@Derpy It seems that Chrono Trigger being influenced by Christian mythology in particular is largely based on things only present in the translation, and beyond that, fairly generic story events that I won't recount in order to not spoil a thing
and ofc a liberal dose of cherry picking
