@ACurious We need to have a little talk, you and I...
@paracetamol What about?
About the duration of time-out periods 0:)
13 mins ago, by paracetamol
@ACuriousMind Let's just keep it at a minute, shall we?
rob
rob
@paracetamol The time-out periods escalate automatically. One, five, thirty minutes.
beep beep
@rob Ouch ._.
17:21
@paracetamol The duration of the kick-mute increases automatically from 1 to 5 to 30 minutes for repeated offenses. Just don't post rude, offensive or sexually suggestive things and you'll be fine.
rob
rob
If you don't want the time-outs to escalate, don't push the boundaries of what's acceptable.
In addition, egregious breaches of the Be Nice policy may incur chat-wide suspension from all rooms instead of a kick.
^ "Rude" isn't very well defined, is it? :(
rob
rob
@paracetamol No, it isn't. Welcome to being a human.
17:22
7 hours ago, by ACuriousMind
@GeroldBroser It is to some extent, but there are many things that are unquestionably rude and unquestionably not-rude. Don't tread the line if you don't have to
^^ This "acceptable"?
@rob Humans... Mumble mumble
rob
rob
Cyanide and Happiness pretty much exists to push boundaries.
2
^ Which is why it's so...addicting! 0:)
You know, I'm also not particularly fond of people flooding the chat with comics that have little to do with the ongoing conversation, regardless of their content.
rob
rob
If we'd like to have an extended meta-discussion about what is and isn't okay for this room, let's do it elsewhere.
17:25
@ACuriousMind Ah...
rob
rob
In fact, I'll move this meta-discussion. Give me a moment.
@rob "Elsewhere"? Wait, is this a sign of an imminent kick?
No, it's an invitation to the meta chat. Extended conversations about the room itself tend to kill the rest of the conversations here, so we have those conversations there.

@paracetamol dude whats the problem? you earned 5k on SE, that takes some understanding of rules/ boundaries, how long have you been using chat? dont poke/ taunt mods (didnt realize walked right into a near gunfight here, trying to follow...)
@ACuriousMind Soso!

:36897618 I usually haunt the Chem.SE. Mods and ROs there tend to be more "flexible" when it comes to stuff like this. If it's outright offensive, sure, it gets deleted. If the idiot repeats it, he gets kicked. But if it's funny and no one explicitly (or otherwise) raises oobjections to it, it stays.
^ That I'm used to ._.

So @ACM @rob, trying to see how you guys define the boundaries here...
Q) If I quote Hitler (not the anti-semitic ones) do I get kicked?
17:33
The boundaries are that you shouldn't post things that are rude or offensive to others.
For example: "If you want to shine like the sun, first you must burn like it"
rob
rob
@paracetamol There are contexts where that might or might not be appropriate.
^ That one's Hitler. Does it get removed (and do I get banned) simply because it was Hitler who said it?
1 min ago, by paracetamol
For example: "If you want to shine like the sun, first you must burn like it"
If you don't see why your first kick was warranted, I can't help you. As for the second one, the Be Nice policy explicitly asks us to avoid anything sexually suggestive, so gratituous and explicit jokes about masturbation are not appropriate (as they would be in any other semi-professional context)
rob
rob
Dude, I saw it. I'm typing.
17:35
@paracetamol No one proposed that any utterances done by Hitler will get removed, so I'm not sure why we are debating that point.
@ACuriousMind I forgot what the first kick was ofr ._.
@paracetamol You typed "Heil Hitler!" after explicitly calling upon other users to star offensive things I'd then have to remove.
rob
rob
There used to be a game with a name like "stealth hitler" where people would take out-of-context Hitler quotes, get others to agree that they were interesting, then say "Ha Ha, you agree with Hitler!" That's a stupid game. Don't play it.
In fact I think that's the context where I first heard your "shine like the sun" quote.
@ACuriousMind I was taking an example...well, with one of the Mods here (two, if you count Loong) being German, would that be removed?
rob
rob
@ACuriousMind (Should that sentence begin with "if"?)
17:37
@paracetamol I don't see what us being German has anything to do with it, but, well, I'd not remove that sentence on its own. Context is key, however.
@ACuriousMind No... I said "Heil H*itler!", the omission of "i" should have been a sufficient indication that it was meant to be taken as a joke :/
@rob No, that was literally what I kicked paracetamol for about half an hour ago.
rob
rob
@ACuriousMind Oh. Good kick, then.
@rob -_-
34 secs ago, by paracetamol
@ACuriousMind No... I said "Heil H*itler!", the omission of "i" should have been a sufficient indication that it was meant to be taken as a joke :/
@paracetamol I don't see how that makes it a joke, or how it being a joke makes it any more appropriate
17:38
Sighs
I give...
Saying "it's a joke" does not magically make things less offensive.
rob
rob
The idea that removing one letter from an offensive word makes it not offensive is a ridiculous fiction.
^^ That one offensive?
rob
rob
@paracetamol If you have to ask, don't post it.
If you're trying to make some point, you can make that point using your own words.
17:41
@rob I'm just trying to get a feel of what jokes/memes you guys would deem offensive .-.
^^^that. There is almost never a good reason to post something that can be construed as offensive unless you want to be perceived as potentially offensive. I'm not going to go through every comic C&H ever posted and decide whether they are offensive or not for you.
rob
rob
If you think that there's some internet image that might make your point, but might also be offensive, then use your words to warn folks rather than dumping the image and seeing what happens.
If you're going through the C&H archive and half the comics are funny, posting that half to the hbar is not an appropriate response.
@rob I have my own archive :3
vzn
vzn
@paracetamol lol
@rob @Acurious SEE! ^
rob
rob
17:44
The hbar is primarily a place for people to have conversations with each other. If you're part of the conversation, you'll have some sense of what's appropriate. If you're not, a cartoon about a lion smiling at his crotch is annoying, whether it's offensive or not.
2
@Thank you @vzn!
vzn
vzn
@paracetamol am laughing at your cartoon and not much more, did you read what wrote earlier, why are you poking/ taunting mods?
@paracetamol See what? Chat is not a game of "post funny pictures", or "find the threshhold which the moderators find offensive"
@vzn I'm not poking/taunting them ._.
vzn
vzn
@paracetamol how long have you been using SE chat?
17:46
@vzn Pretty much on the same day I joined SE ( My first question got a couple of upvotes...hence)
vzn
vzn
@paracetamol what are ROs? Physics mods seem generally reasonable think you need to just learn to back off sometimes.
@vzn ROs = Room Owners
rob
rob
RO == "room owner". the hbar has some non-mods with authority to kickmute users and move/delete messages.
vzn
vzn
@paracetamol some users seem to get tripped up on this concept, even smart ppl. there is a lot of dialog on this subj in this room. a lot of it seems rather wasted/ pointless. the boundaries are what they say they are. thats how authority works. its not rocket science. its emotional intelligence. think about it.
@vzn Yeah, I figured... ended up flagging a Mod on The Periodic Table...didn't end well (It wasn't like I got banned or kicked or anything... just that our little "debate" following the flag shouldn't have happened) ._.
vzn
vzn
17:50
@paracetamol its great to have new chat regulars but not ppl who are constantly trying to test boundaries. :(
@vzn Emotional intelligence, huh.
Sighs
vzn
vzn
@paracetamol theres room for some humor but theres also some place for RESPECT
@vzn Agreed...but I haven't compromised anyone's dignity (apart from mine ;P)
vzn
vzn
see, walked into your gunfight by accident & now theyre dinging my msgs. not happy about that either :(
@vzn Didn't you're Mother ever tell you to stay away from shoot-outs? ;D
rob
rob
17:53
@vzn What is "dinging your messages?"
@vzn We just moved a few of them here because they belonged to this conversation - you did nothing wrong
@rob Oh, he meant "messages"? I was wondering why he brought up monosodium glutamate (MSG) ._.
^ Not trying to be funny...just the chemist in me can be annoying sometimes ._.
@vzn Woo! I'm a "new chat regular"?
rob
rob
@paracetamol Pretty much.
Woo! \o/
@rob Do I get any benefits out of it? (Apart from being kicked every now and then)
rob
rob
@paracetamol Depends on whether you continue being a pain the butt or not :-)

18:01
Anyways, I'm off to bed. @vzn, @rob and @ACurious...let's just shake on it and bury the hatchet shall we? Sure, I've got a sizable amount of rep but I generally find it hard to locate subtle 'offensivities'. In the event I that I cross the boundary, I'd appreciate it if you guys could give me a heads up (so I can retract the "offending comment" before I'm kicked) ^_^
rob
rob
@paracetamol Hatchet buried. Cheers.
Woo! \o/
@rob Also, could put in a few good words for me the next time you talk to ACM? I think he took the "Heil H*itler" comment personally :(
rob
rob
@paracetamol I don't think he took it personally, and I think he made the right call there. The way he described the exchange in here, you pushed essentially all of the "troublesome user" buttons.
Looks the other way
@rob So... no more "Heil"ing anytime soon, huh?
rob
rob
@paracetamol I find it hard to imagine a context where that would be an appropriate thing to say.
18:07
Anyways, this conversation was productive...I hope we don't end up having this again, though ;)
@rob I'll give you one:
> What's the worst thing to say at The h-bar?
> Heil H*tler?
> Yep
Flags comment
rob
rob
Actually, if it's true you were trying to fill up the star board with offensive messages, that's much more annoying than just being accidentally offensive.
@rob Um no... it was supposed to be a "joke", actually ._. I'm not that kind of a guy ;P
vzn
vzn
@ACuriousMind lets face it mod actions to move msgs are a general hassle/ "cognitive load" to mods & generally signify boundary violations. understand there can be "innocent bystanders"...
@paracetamol I would have done that had I had the impression you were accidentally being offensive, but it appeared very much deliberate, especially in light of:
in The h Bar, 1 hour ago, by paracetamol
@AccidentalFourierTransform That, or we could all star really offensive messages and let ACM see it :3
@ACuriousMind The comment was intentional, the message contained within it was (supposed to be interpreted as) humorous ._.
18:13
@vzn Eh, moving messages doesn't indicate you stepped over some line unless the target of the move is Trash
vzn
vzn
@paracetamol youre smart enough to figure out boundaries with brief directions from mods/ "authorities" and its not up to mods to be babysitters & try not to play hairsplitting games (in your defense have seen many others do this, some with high rep). respectful responding to them is part of the boundary. hint: try to avoid the feeling of indignation/ questioning in response...
rob
rob
@paracetamol Online text-only chat isn't a medium where subtlety works.
@vzn Love the hint! (Already figured that out, actually)
@rob ._.
Looks the other way
vzn
vzn
@paracetamol arguing over boundaries set by authorities. kids games! & some adults act like kids sometimes!
@vzn But... I'm only 18 years old(Meh! I suppose that explains why I'm being so obstinate). So calling me an "adult" would depend on country .-.
rob
rob
18:21
@paracetamol We treat our users like adults, whether they act like adults or not.
vzn
vzn
@paracetamol anyone who returns intermittently is close to a regular. the h bar has very long history, encourage you to look into transcripts via search keywords. we have regular biweekly mtgs. its one of the more active/ colorful SE chats. thx for contributing to that some. new sharp/ nice/ respectful ppl are always welcome. more on SE chat ettiquete here vzn1.wordpress.com/chat
@rob You mean: "...whether they are adults or not." ?
vzn
vzn
@ACuriousMind chatting with problematic users is problematic due to guilt by association. am interested in defusing conflicts without stooping to the level of the conflict. it can be like dinosaurs in the la brea tarpits sometimes... :(
@vzn Great, so I'm a regular then!
@vzn I'm a "problematic user"? :'(
rob
rob
@paracetamol I meant what I wrote.
18:25
@rob So puppy eyes don't work, huh.
Sigh
@rob I...understand.

3 hours later…
21:47
@paracetamol I'm piping in a little late to say that this is somewhat fine; we are generally willing to help you (or, people in general) participate in chat appropriately by e.g. telling you when you posted something inappropriate rather than kicking you out immediately. But... we help people who we think can soon become good chatters who won't post inappropriate messages. If you simply can't learn how to do that, you don't get to participate in chat.
In other words, you need to learn how to recognize boundaries and avoid crossing them on your own. We won't help you at the same level forever.
