@paracetamol The duration of the kick-mute increases automatically from 1 to 5 to 30 minutes for repeated offenses. Just don't post rude, offensive or sexually suggestive things and you'll be fine.
@GeroldBroser It is to some extent, but there are many things that are unquestionably rude and unquestionably not-rude. Don't tread the line if you don't have to
You know, I'm also not particularly fond of people flooding the chat with comics that have little to do with the ongoing conversation, regardless of their content.
No, it's an invitation to the meta chat. Extended conversations about the room itself tend to kill the rest of the conversations here, so we have those conversations there.
@paracetamol dude whats the problem? you earned 5k on SE, that takes some understanding of rules/ boundaries, how long have you been using chat? dont poke/ taunt mods (didnt realize walked right into a near gunfight here, trying to follow...)
:36897618 I usually haunt the Chem.SE. Mods and ROs there tend to be more "flexible" when it comes to stuff like this. If it's outright offensive, sure, it gets deleted. If the idiot repeats it, he gets kicked. But if it's funny and no one explicitly (or otherwise) raises oobjections to it, it stays.
If you don't see why your first kick was warranted, I can't help you. As for the second one, the Be Nice policy explicitly asks us to avoid anything sexually suggestive, so gratituous and explicit jokes about masturbation are not appropriate (as they would be in any other semi-professional context)
There used to be a game with a name like "stealth hitler" where people would take out-of-context Hitler quotes, get others to agree that they were interesting, then say "Ha Ha, you agree with Hitler!" That's a stupid game. Don't play it.
In fact I think that's the context where I first heard your "shine like the sun" quote.
^^^that. There is almost never a good reason to post something that can be construed as offensive unless you want to be perceived as potentially offensive. I'm not going to go through every comic C&H ever posted and decide whether they are offensive or not for you.
If you think that there's some internet image that might make your point, but might also be offensive, then use your words to warn folks rather than dumping the image and seeing what happens.
If you're going through the C&H archive and half the comics are funny, posting that half to the hbar is not an appropriate response.
The hbar is primarily a place for people to have conversations with each other. If you're part of the conversation, you'll have some sense of what's appropriate. If you're not, a cartoon about a lion smiling at his crotch is annoying, whether it's offensive or not.
@paracetamol some users seem to get tripped up on this concept, even smart ppl. there is a lot of dialog on this subj in this room. a lot of it seems rather wasted/ pointless. the boundaries are what they say they are. thats how authority works. its not rocket science. its emotional intelligence. think about it.
@vzn Yeah, I figured... ended up flagging a Mod on The Periodic Table...didn't end well (It wasn't like I got banned or kicked or anything... just that our little "debate" following the flag shouldn't have happened) ._.
Anyways, I'm off to bed. @vzn, @rob and @ACurious...let's just shake on it and bury the hatchet shall we? Sure, I've got a sizable amount of rep but I generally find it hard to locate subtle 'offensivities'. In the event I that I cross the boundary, I'd appreciate it if you guys could give me a heads up (so I can retract the "offending comment" before I'm kicked) ^_^
@paracetamol I don't think he took it personally, and I think he made the right call there. The way he described the exchange in here, you pushed essentially all of the "troublesome user" buttons.
Actually, if it's true you were trying to fill up the star board with offensive messages, that's much more annoying than just being accidentally offensive.
@ACuriousMind lets face it mod actions to move msgs are a general hassle/ "cognitive load" to mods & generally signify boundary violations. understand there can be "innocent bystanders"...
@paracetamol I would have done that had I had the impression you were accidentally being offensive, but it appeared very much deliberate, especially in light of:
@paracetamol youre smart enough to figure out boundaries with brief directions from mods/ "authorities" and its not up to mods to be babysitters & try not to play hairsplitting games (in your defense have seen many others do this, some with high rep). respectful responding to them is part of the boundary. hint: try to avoid the feeling of indignation/ questioning in response...
@paracetamol anyone who returns intermittently is close to a regular. the h bar has very long history, encourage you to look into transcripts via search keywords. we have regular biweekly mtgs. its one of the more active/ colorful SE chats. thx for contributing to that some. new sharp/ nice/ respectful ppl are always welcome. more on SE chat ettiquete here vzn1.wordpress.com/chat
@ACuriousMind chatting with problematic users is problematic due to guilt by association. am interested in defusing conflicts without stooping to the level of the conflict. it can be like dinosaurs in the la brea tarpits sometimes... :(
@paracetamol I'm piping in a little late to say that this is somewhat fine; we are generally willing to help you (or, people in general) participate in chat appropriately by e.g. telling you when you posted something inappropriate rather than kicking you out immediately. But... we help people who we think can soon become good chatters who won't post inappropriate messages. If you simply can't learn how to do that, you don't get to participate in chat.
In other words, you need to learn how to recognize boundaries and avoid crossing them on your own. We won't help you at the same level forever.
