@LegionMammal978 HEY, it's another code-golfer (note, this room gets little activity)! I noticed that the consonants that appear at all frequencies, /vðzʒfθsʃ/ are all fricatives. The others (/mnŋlɹw/) are not, and are also all voiced. Maybe that has something to do with it? The voicing might explain why /h/ and /ʍ/ you are not really sure about. Also, /j/ is the only palatal sound there, so that might mean something. But I have no clue as to why, however.
@LegionMammal978 Also, who were you recording? IIRC, /ʍ/ is pretty rare.
01:52
@WiccanKarnak, you have any ideas>

Nope but the question seems interesting, fricatives can be produced in any frequency

When you mean appearing at all frequencies do you mean the spectrogram is black all the way up to the top? Pretty sure that's just because there's a non-regular component to the fricatives but not the sonorants...
Whereas for the sonorants the source of the sound is the vocal folds (which produces regular sound waves) and the amplitude decreases as we get farther away from the fundamental frequency
(Of course, not decreasing monotonically because the vocal tract acts as a filter to create formants)

@LegionMammal978, that seems to be the answer ^

@Zacharý I was recording myself, also tested with /ʍ/ for kicks
@WavesWashSands Thanks, makes sense
But yeah, I first noticed these blocks in the spectrogram in some regular English sentences I was recording (I think with /s/ and /ʃ/), and then pulled up a consonant list to try with the rest of them
15:10
Ah,that makes sense
15:29
Hey all I had a question, if that recent question transfers to Japanese SE will the answer by leobiko go along?
And @Zacharý when is NACLO?
@WiccanKarnak January 25th.
@WiccanKarnak Why are you asking ?
Just for general knowledge lol
I always look forward for the paper to come up
On the sitw
*e
Ah, that makes sense
Of course, I won't tell you anything until the problems come out just in case my score would get invalidated
15:45
Obviously
16:18
@WiccanKarnak, we have to use a black pen on the NACLO exam. It specifically says to use a black pen. Is there anything like that rule for the Indian equivalent ?
No we can use from anything to everything, just that it should be readable and not misleading
Yeah. Hopefully there's some random reference to a popular TV show again :p
Oh god, the website for India's equivalent looks so bad
@WiccanKarnak, the flashing font ... my god
And the links are all messed up
@WiccanKarnak, so, when is the equivalent to NACLO in India?
17:26
Ikr the site's domain messed up recently, so it had to be completely remade within weeks
It already happened and since I was in the intl team last time and before that I need not give it , am qualified for the second round directly
Wow, hope we both make it to IOL
And no WONDER I saw so many duplicate names in India's competitor list
I mean it's old domain got messed up for some reason
I hope too! No Wonder also because the number of people who appear for the exam is very low as compared to our possible population
Could be worse, could be that Estere Š. from Latvia who competed 5 years in a row
Second round as in, I still have to qualify through the second round test to get into the team
Ok so you are a stat guy too
Yep.
But how did "you are a stat guy too" come about?
17:33
@Zacharý here
Stat guys , according to me, are people who spend time going through previous years, contestants, their profiles, and other statistics
I just got bored when trying (and miserably failing due to ~5 names fitting criteria) to locate you within India's IOL team
Oh ok then ~stat guy~ XD
It didn't cross out
You can edit messages, you know
Oh ok it's not WhatsApp
I didn't thanks! 😅
I will go zzz
Nice talking ttyl
