@LegionMammal978 HEY, it's another code-golfer (note, this room gets little activity)! I noticed that the consonants that appear at all frequencies, /vðzʒfθsʃ/ are all fricatives. The others (/mnŋlɹw/) are not, and are also all voiced. Maybe that has something to do with it? The voicing might explain why /h/ and /ʍ/ you are not really sure about. Also, /j/ is the only palatal sound there, so that might mean something. But I have no clue as to why, however.

@LegionMammal978 Also, who were you recording? IIRC, /ʍ/ is pretty rare.

Nope but the question seems interesting, fricatives can be produced in any frequency

When you mean appearing at all frequencies do you mean the spectrogram is black all the way up to the top? Pretty sure that's just because there's a non-regular component to the fricatives but not the sonorants...

Whereas for the sonorants the source of the sound is the vocal folds (which produces regular sound waves) and the amplitude decreases as we get farther away from the fundamental frequency

(Of course, not decreasing monotonically because the vocal tract acts as a filter to create formants)

But yeah, I first noticed these blocks in the spectrogram in some regular English sentences I was recording (I think with /s/ and /ʃ/), and then pulled up a consonant list to try with the rest of them

@WiccanKarnak, we have to use a black pen on the NACLO exam. It specifically says to use a black pen. Is there anything like that rule for the Indian equivalent ?

No we can use from anything to everything, just that it should be readable and not misleading
