Y'all are assuming that the criteria for Defender has been unchanged since the start of the event. Any worthy Defender should know that they need to be flexible, and adapt to circumstance.
To clarify - I saw the page yesterday. I didn't feel like deciphering, so I've not done it yet. Today I've not done anything I'd consider "abnormal". Most recently, I booted the laptop, and restored the previous Firefox session. Which opened a bunch of tabs from before but the Unicorn one wasn't among them.
FWIW to help with deciphering: there was a problem with the awarding of Manual Key - whatever the criteria is, it will only be taking into account actions performed starting today at around 08:00 UTC or so
@YaakovEllis One would just want to know if the game has started yet or not... Since you know, one hast already lost quite a bit time last year looking for a time gated hat BEFORE the hat was available... (and please forgive the adeptus speak here)
Also, for what it's worth: last year, the team broke from tradition and didn't disclose the triggers for the unsolved secret hats at the end, which they did for 2019 and earlier Bashes, so they could re-use the same triggers for this year's Bash. Those who want to try and guess may want to look at past activity from Winter 2020 for hints.
@YaakovEllis Will owning an actual The Key device (that hasn't been reprogrammed) make it easier to earn Manual Key? I own one, but I've reprogrammed it.

The manual key hat was delivered for triggering it today, or it was something like "You triggered it yesterday, so you got it today because of the bug"?
Coming to this.... Last year the Defender had TWO possible award trigger. The "cheating in the game" and the hidden quiz. The quiz was added later and was NOT available from the star. Accessing the quiz at the start of the event gave a "stay tuned" message. This year, we have a similar "stay tuned" message. so, I only see three options: a) the Defender hat trigger is not related to any future game the message could be a placeholder for or will have TWO triggers this year too b) the users that got the hat got it because of a bug or hacking the script on that page
@VLAZ look, I am trying to non waste any work Yaakov MAY have done (may because I am not sure of anything right now). If he is fine with it, I will explain why this feels so off to me.
I just got the manual key without posting anything, fwiw. I just wildly copied the contents of code blocks, entire bodies of answer/question and pasted it in an answer editor I've never posted. Sorry for being so unstructured in my attempts :)
@Wolgwang you need to be more specific with your definition. If you are asking whether "wildly copying the contents of code blocks, entir bodies..." is the trigger, then the answer is: no

Yeah. So I can confirm that reparenting if you already have the hat will just award the hat again, so any data you've collected about it with subsequent sites on chat.se is bad data.
@VLAZ About Defender of the Unicorn. Last year @YaakovEllis added a game to the Bash site - a reskin of the Google Dinosaur game. People started finding ways to cheat, so he added a bounty - the ones who found a way to cheat and reported it got the hat. At the same time, he also had the /unicorn url on the site (a reference to previous years when urls like /dog, /chicken and so on were part of an easter egg) give out a message. "Stay Tuned". Later, the page was changed to a quiz that awarded the same hat.
@Wolgwang Not sure if it helps, but I tried pressing the i key and haven't gotten a hat for it yet. It's been a while now. Unless it's very slow, I assume I should have had it.

I think that a javascript game replayer would be interesting and useful.
For a brief list of requirements - something that can display several variations and move comments as well as be fairly easily edited (at least for minor edits).
It's possible to check which keys you are pressing; Another option is that the Browser fires an event whenever the user copies something, among many other actions the user may do
