@ScottPack @Ward Yeah, that bridge has always been sketchy. Hated riding my motorcycle over it. =/
So I just saw on KIRO that it looks like a truck clipped the bridge trusses and they think that's what caused it.
Oy. Original interstate construction too. 1955.
@MikeyB Dump and reload the database doesn't sound TOO unreasonable, the problem there is they forgot the instructions on dumping it!
THE WHOLE PAGE IS LUNACY
05:12
@MikeyB The real problem here is that Discourse hasn't stabilized enough yet.
the upgrade instructions include instructions on git conflict resolution!
Welcome to DevOps.
@MichaelHampton Well yeah, it's not supposed to be terribly stable. But here's my upgrade instructions if you follow my install document:
git pull; bundle install --deployment; rake db:migrate; pkill thin
that's about it.
Now that seems a bit more reasonable.
Hey wait a minute. Why is PHP in a "stack" that's meant to be running a Rails app?
LOL it's not, that's a typo.
05:16
WTF are they git stashing?
Damn. If I could figure out how to make some money on it, I'd build virtual appliances that didn't suck.
@MichaelHampton the crazy changes bitnami made to the code they distribute.
Seems they're charging people to run their instances on EC2, somehow.
Rather than properly fork it, they make their upgrade instructions 'git stash; git pull; git stash apply; ... oh yeah, figure out what you should merge"
Have they never heard of a branch?
@MichaelHampton nuke it from orbit… with:
05:30
That's just peachy. Fry's has exactly zero PCI-E adapters that aren't garbage no-name brands.
PCIe to…?
@Adrian What are you trying to adapt?
NICs, actually. Which my fingers skipped whilst typing.
Garbage no-name brands are fine for most home users served by places like Fry's.
The AR8161 alx driver is wonky on CentOS 6.4 due to RHEL's back-porting of some other driver code that conflicts with it.
So I'm trying to find a hardware NIC to stuff in there instead.
05:35
I've got one in my junkbox, I think.
I figured that the market for internal NICs would've moved over to PCI-E by now.
It's a garbage Rosewill NIC "Extreme Edition", which means they put a heatsink on the chip.
@MichaelHampton Heh. That's funny.
Of course, if the developers of the Atheros chipsets and the kernel maintainers would stop their dick-waving for a few months, we might get some integrated Atheros drivers in the Linux kernel.
05:40
@Adrian Dude, Intel or Broadcom.
My media PC and home network may or may not have server-class NICs in them… :)
I may or may not have repurposed laptops with broken screens as servers.
@MikeyB Broadcom? Aren't those straight-up binary drivers?
@Adrian not at all
@MichaelHampton Actually, I'm an idiot. It has a regular PCI interface in it. I didn't notice it because I've never seen them colored blue. facepalm
@Adrian Who is the idiot who colored the PCI slot blue?
Is this... a desktop motherboard?
05:43
@Adrian D'OH! I have a quad PCI Sun HME card that doesn't work in my pfSense box (it doesn't POST with the card :(
:D
@MikeyB Hmm. They probably would work fine in Linux. I used to have an awful time loading Debian on IBM xSeries boxen since they had no drivers for Broadcom
@MichaelHampton Oh yes. Gigabyte h77m, which is what I can afford.
@Adrian Well, they DO, it's just not on the installation media.
@Andrew Fuck that shit. Fuck it. Fuck. They can get dual 150Mbps pipes to your fucking house; we can't get > 100Mbps in a fucking datacenter for < $4000/month

Q: How to use non-free drivers during debian install

blokeleyI'm trying to install debian stable using unetbootin. The install process fails with "network autoconfiguration failed", probably due to the ethernet driver not working. My Lenovo U350 has a Broadcom BCM57780 which does not seem to be supported out-of-the-box: there are various bug reports here,...

And Malcom Bloody Turnbull wnats to take away our NBN
05:45
@Adrian some of the cards need firmware to work, yeah. Easy enough to work around
@MikeyB Yeah, debian was a problem. I also remember that we had problems with the newer Broadcoms chips in the x3550M3s when running the old Ubuntu 9.10.
5
A: Can switch detect mac address if driver is not installed?

Michael HamptonThis file is part of the firmware package distributed with the Linux kernel. Due to licensing issues, Debian does not install it by default. If you need it, you must explicitly install it. apt-get install firmware-bnx2 (And since you probably don't have networking, you'll probably have to manu...

@Adrian can always download and install newest drivers from source
@MikeyB For test, yes. But that wouldn't be tenable for production. Most especially because I'd be the only one there who could duplicate it next time the kernel needs updating.
@MarkHenderson Well, you have what, 95th percentile in the datacenter? At home it's assumed you'll be using only a tiny fraction of that 150Mbps, generally in very short bursts.
05:47
@MichaelHampton This is true
@Adrian On that note, WhyTF are you on 9.10?
@MarkHenderson Comcast complains if you, as a residential customer, go over 250GB in a month for more than a few months in a row. That's less than 1Mbps averaged out.
@MikeyB 10.04 was a cluster with the new social media crap, so that release got rejected by management. 12.04 had a Firefox that leaked worse than a submarine with a screen door and an unusable Tbird.
@MichaelHampton Yep. Happened to me for a few months.
@Adrian Which is how I ended up on Comcast Business.
@MikeyB Of course, I don't work there anymore either.
@MichaelHampton How much that run you?
05:50
@Adrian … cuz you know, you can't put your own version of tbird on. Hey, I run 12.04 with tbird perfectly fine :p
@Adrian right
@MikeyB Can't remember details, but the installs were decidedly flaky with all the various library requirements. We definitely tried it, and it sucked in some very serious ways.
@MichaelHampton $15/mo for a static IP? Sheesh. Ought to be getting a reach-around for that kind of pricing.
@Adrian Fortunately I don't need a static IP here. If I did, I'd probably just order the /29 and be done with it.
@Adrian: why not one of the spinoff distros?
KDE is actually pretty good
Yep, I am a very happy KDE user. I switched back right after GNOME 3 came out.
05:54
@MichaelHampton yeah, only $5 more for a /29
@MichaelHampton I switched to Gnome when KDE4 came out. I'd been a KDE guy for 10 years.
@Adrian Though, since 2007, my IP address has changed exactly twice.
and amusingly, since it was spun off, the folk who maintain it are big KDE supporters and don't treat it like a ginger haired unwanted child.
@MichaelHampton dang. That's not bad. They'd change me between entire entire /8 ranges every 4-6 weeks.
@Adrian They've massively cleaned up KDE 4. It's worth another look.
@MichaelHampton: mine has almost never changed. Its still blacklisted for being a dynamic IP, which I suspect is what you're really paying for
05:56
@Adrian Wait, it was three times. One was when I siwtched from residential to business in the first place, so I guess that maybe doesn't count. Another was when we had an outage because some jackass ran into a telephone pole. The last one was when I moved.
@MichaelHampton I remember doing a trial install of KDE4 in December 2009. Literally, the only thing we could get to work was this little app that bouncing a red ball up and down on the screen. Couldn't even adjust the sound.
@Adrian Yeah, it was rough then.
eh
its gotten a LOT better since then alright
@MichaelHampton And waiting wasn't in the cards. I had an agency that had 10 subnets that were all on assorted flavors of Fedora, Debian, and CentOS and none of it worked with a damn.
05:58
Most of my career has been about putting out fires. I'm really hoping to get into a slot where they're doing some real planning.
Both places I'm talking to now have real potential, so I'm kind of excited.
What, you didn't want to be a firefighter when you grow up?
@MichaelHampton Nope.
Time for me to go pumpkin. Later Gents.
G'day
@Iain still nothing compared to your mileage, but i'm doing way more this month - 122km so far, and Bike to Work Week next week still to come. 3035ft of elevation.
@Ward I went horse riding instead of cycling last night and missed out on some good times - it's very windy here at the moment and it looks like some of the guys had a tailwind on a strava segment or two
06:16
So they're actually saying now that the truck did hit the bridge.
2 hours ago, by Ward
We drive over this bridge about once a month, on shopping trips to the US:
2 hours ago, by Ward
http://www.vancouversun.com/news/Skagit+River+Bridge+collapses+Washington+State+‌cars+people+seen/8427846/story.html?tab=PHOT
So a moment ago they showed a closeup of the truck, where the container it was carrying was mangled, presumably from hitting the bridge supports.
06:30
One of the guys injured says he saw a truck that looked too wide hit the bridge.
Yeah, I just watched that.
Oh, that's right, it's a holiday weekend for you guys down there... we had ours last weekend.
Well, that explains why the semi didn't move over.
@Ward It's a holiday weekend for us too :)
Here, nobody remembers why it's a holiday.
06:33
@Iain I can't believe we get a holiday in honour of Queen Victoria's birthday, but the Brits don't...
@MichaelHampton Yours all sound alike: Memorial Day, Veteran's Day, Gay Indian Liberation Day...
@MichaelHampton Our's is just called Spring Bank Holiday
@Iain Hey, at least that's honest.
@MichaelHampton Yours is Memorial Day what's not honest about that ?
@Iain Nobody remembers what it is they're supposed to be remembering?
At least we have a poem on our $5 bill to remind us what we're remembering for Remembrance Day
06:36
@Ward that is kinda strange. The Dutch have Queens/Kings day and I believe it recently changed data and name
@Ward And the poppy quarters.
Sorry, it's on the $10
This year we're remembering the "other" war of 1812... Canadians like to claim they "won"
@MichaelHampton Seems like a faux news sort of story...
@Ward Associated Press?
I have a couple of poppy quarters in my junkbox.
06:53
hi all
i have an answer which I think is quite good, yet downvoted to -2

07:42
Morning
Oh crap, it's past my bedtime!
@MichaelHampton Sleep well!
@JennyD Lots of spring grass in the horse I ride makes for interesting times :)
@Iain I know that feeling :-)
Once I managed to contain it I had a great time but it was interesting to start with
07:57
@Iain Mine's going out to pasture in a week. I'm expecting the same behaviour, with an added 15+ minutes to get him to come to me in the field the first day
@JennyD :)
@Iain He's already started looking at me like "Really. There's grass here. You want me to come in? Are you stupid?"
So I've started the training with horse candy again...
@JennyD The yard staff report the same thing. I occasional get a chance to go down and ride on my own but don't seem to have the trouble they do in getting him in, perhaps it's because he doesn't expect me to go get him
@Iain Either that, or he thinks what you do is more fun than what they do when they bring him in.
It's hard to figure out what goes on in their minds sometimes...
Just sometimes ?
08:05
@Iain Sometimes it's very obvious. Those times mostly involve food.
oh, another downvote, nice
Oh, he may also be playing with the staff. Horses do have a sense of humour, only it's always on the expense of humans and often involves slapstick.
@cstamas I dunno why you're worrying about 2 downvotes on a 2 year old answer
@JennyD familiarity and all that
@Iain I swear, you can see them giggle sometimes... or at least smirk.

It doesn't bother me morally, but first news item I saw this morning was a video of 2 terrorists being shot by the Police. Quite an interesting world we live in now, with regards to media - future generations will see our time in detail that we can only dream of with our history
@JennyD What does that make me then?
08:13
@tombull89 child
;)
\o/
I'm going grey though...
@tombull89 you're 23 ?
Dan
Dan
@tombull89 I'm going bald :(
@tombull89 I am too.
@Dan best get it over and done with the look in between isn't great :)
08:14
@Iain yeah, two small grey spots either site of the head just in front of the ears, much the the amusement of my parents.
Dan
Dan
@Iain Been there and done it! Grade 1 (or 2, I forget) all the way now
@tombull89 I know people who were fully bald by that age
@Iain I thought that's why the almost-shaved look is so popular nowadays
@JennyD yep
@Iain It's way better than the comb-overs that guys used to have 20 years ago

Your best friend, what a stupid woman
So..Firefox doesn't like trying to download 28 videos at the same time. Who'd of though it?
@Dan Um. She'd take the comment back if she could. Not the knocking over a cyclist?
Dan
Dan
@JennyD Indeed.
@JennyD very much so, though neither is a look I expect to sport unless it's a fashion statement - balding isn't something that runs in our family
Dan
Dan
@JennyD Do something really shitty, brag/joke about it in public and then act shocked at the backlash!
08:21
@Dan Banned from driving, IMHO. Not stopping and then bragging about it?
It's people like her that give young drivers a bad name.
Dan
Dan
I love watching YouTube videos when I'm 'chilling out' and I'm subscribed to a few motorcyclists and cyclists. The attitude taken by drivers absolutely astounds me - there are some real bastards out there with a serious superiority complex.
People found other evdence of her poor driving in her social profile too aparently
@Dan One of the main problems for pedal cyclists is that lost of car drivers think they own the road because they pay tax.
She was suspended from her job? Oh dear oh dear.
Dan
Dan
@Iain Oh God the car tax argument - "I pay road tax" is simply shorthand for uninformed, uneducated prick
08:26
They conveniently ignore the fact that it's a pollution tax and several marques of car don't pay either
@Iain To be fair, there are also a number of cyclist who don't understand that if they're cycling in the road (as opposed to on a bike path) they need to follow the same rules as any other vehicle. Including not weaving through the crossing traffic on red.
They reportedly found photos of her tailgating other drivers as well as a picture of her speedometer a 95 MPH that were also sent into the police yeah. ban her.
@JennyD people are stupid
Dan
Dan
@JennyD But, without a doubt, the higher burden MUST be placed on car drivers
@Iain Indeed!
@Dan Yes - the party that is the more protected and can do the more damage has to be the more careful one. "With great power", and all that.
Dan
Dan
08:30
@JennyD As a driver (and now a motorcyclists, yay!) I'd gladly support far more stringent tests, more frequent testing and a higher enforced standard of driving overall
@Dan Yup. It's insane that people get their license renewed without any check that they have both retained their original skills and know the laws that have cvhanged since they got their license.
@Dan I don't know about testing but an evaluation every few years would be good
Dan
Dan
@Iain Yeah, just an IAM style thing
Company car drivers sometimes have to do them. I just spent an hour driving around - it wasn't a "check your mirrors every 10 seconds" type of test, just a general look at your standard of driving and see where to improve.
(I got a great report, but in the interests of fairness I should probably admit I had to do the course after bumping my car into a bollard I didn't see)
@JennyD Yeah, I've found it really interesting going through my bike test. It's forced me to take on board the changes in teaching and testing in the last 10 years, and made me brush up on a bit of theory.
@Dan I'm getting an addition to my license to be allowed to pull heavier trailers, so I'll be getting to do the whole thing over again, both driving and theory/rules.
@Dan a cow-orker had a minor RTC and was sked to do a similar thing. They had one guy on the course who after his first drive everyone else refused to get in the car with him. I think they had the instructor in the front with the driver and 2 other participants in the back
Dan
Dan
08:38
Christ, that's bad. Problem is, it's totally dependent on your attitude - I've always took pride in my driving and try to learn and read how to be a genuinely better and safer driver. Others don't care in the slightest.

Jane and I are thinking of doing the advanced driving. I'd like to do advanced motorcycling, too, but still need a bit of time by myself first
@JennyD Good fun! My brother just did his 2 HGV tests (Big rigid trucks, then big trucks with trailers) and has loved it
@Dan I want to be able to pull a trailer with two horses in it. As it is now I could get a smallish trailer, but it'd be handy to be able to go off on a show together with another driver without having to take two cars.
Dan
Dan
@JennyD Definitely makes sense - sounds like your driving laws are similar to ours. I can only drive with little trailers
@Dan Actually, what I'd really like would be to have a camper car with a big horse trailer. Then you'd have somewhere to have coffee and go to the loo without having to go away from the horses.
Dan
Dan
@JennyD Yeah, I see that a fair bit. Makes perfect sense - even just a little "weekender" van would do the trick
And depending on the van, you'd be fine to use it day to day rather than have loads of cars
I've just got the bog-standard license. The school were looking for voulenteers to learn to drive the minbus and I put my name forward but I wasn't chosen :( which was a shame because I would have liked to borrorw it for a couple of times.
Dan
Dan
08:43
@tombull89 Gutted - always nice to get more entitlements.
I fancy doing my C+E some day
Costly exercise for fun, though
Saying that, my brother has recently bought a Toyota Previa for his music stuff - he had a share in a van with the caveat it was in the forest of dean so he'd have to drive over, pick the van up, drive back, pick his gear up, do the gig, and then do it all in reverse.
@Dan I've got a Toyota Prius now, so it can't pull anything at all. But we bought an old but functional Volvo to practice driving for husband and driving with trailer for me. When he gets his license I want a second car that is in a better shape, a SUV or something else that works better on small dirt roads than the Prius.
Absoultely massive car, two in front, two behind in "swivel chairs" and three in the back. Puts the back seats down, he can get in all his music gear and still have room for 4 passengers.
Dan
Dan
@tombull89 Not goign to lie, can't stand those things!
@JennyD Defender!
@Dan It's kinda amusing, he's got a teeny tiny Mini and then a massive great Previa.
08:46
I'm not sure about that, I'd like to have some actual comfort too
Dan
Dan
@JennyD Fair point, they're very utilitarian
@tombull89 Haha, got to be practical sometimes!
@Dan If I'm driving home after a long-distance ride, or even a dressage event, I'll want a comfortable seat.
@JennyD sit in more :)
@Iain I think that would translate as something my trainer would say :-)
Dan
Dan
@JennyD A discovery would probably be my second 4x4 of choice
08:48
@JennyD yes
But it's also that if we get a bigger car that would probably be the one we'd take on vacation instead of the Prius, and I've been spoiled with having a car that I can drive for a full day without getting too tired or uncomfortable.
@Dan Discovery? Unimog please.
Dan
Dan
@tombull89 Haha, well, yes.
Two ticks, check out what my friend is selling
Seriously after getting a Technic model of a Unimog and looking at them online they're a beast of a vehicle.

The Technic version is considerably cheaper, though :P
Utterly brilliant model.

Took this offroading a few years back
It was fun, but mostly terrifying and amazingly hard work.
The power steering was such that it gave NO feedback whatsoever. So the only way to get your wheels straight was to let go of the wheel and go forwards
That was genuinely easier!
@tombull89 If my child doesn't like Technic I'll be forced to disown them :(
@Dan haha, same. Although I guess I'll be building the model more than them
Although the unimog was pretty insane...
huh that should be rotate 90...

I've decided to simply Facebook harass an old college friend who keeps ranting about Muslims until he simply deletes me

No, thank God
Seen a few - pretty appalled by peoples attitudes, to be honest
Do people really think all Muslims are out to kill everyone? :(
@Dan Unfortunately, yes, far too many people do.

@JourneymanGeek That's the point though, it's definitely not confined to Muslims

religion is just an excuse for unforgivable barbaricness

@JourneymanGeek It seems to me that anyone's personal religious views will be consistent with who they are if you discount religion. (With the obvious exception of cults that brainwash people.)

Q: How to install NLB on 2 win 7 machines with IIS 7.5

Floradu88Is it possible to make a load balancing cluster that uses 2 win7 machines with IIS installed. I want to make a cluster between 2 such machines. @JourneymanGeek it's a bit like some people saying their personality changes when they drink. No. You're the same person, you're just not keeping it in check. Same with religion; suddenly your god tells you to do what you already think is right. Which may be a very good thing or a very bad thing.
@JennyD: Precisely
@JennyD yeah, I get a lot more snarky when I drink :)
for some reason people see this as a good thing and keep buying me drinks. I'm not complaining.
