People are funny.
Funny haha or funny wtf?
A bit of both depending on the context.
@ScottPack It would be really funny to take a blowtorch to them?
@JennyD The best and worst thing about burning human flesh is that it smells so much like grilling pork.
@ScottPack I've heard that before; never been in a position to verify, thank $DEITY.

Q: Why is it important to gain "visibility" in the workplace?

R11GMy boss has recently been pushing me to take up stuff and try gain visibility across the organisation. I just do not understand the idea behind this. Why is it important to gain visibility? If I can write awesome code, why should I care about having visibility? The work I am doing rocks, then wh...

Bless, some people really are clueless on how to succeed in business!
@JennyD There are a couple of times where I've been present for someone getting a good burn. Stupid things like an arm coming in contact with a 400F gas grill lid.
Dan
Dan
Burns are, IMHO, one of the worst injuries
Both to receive and to treat
No doubt.
@Dan I've never had any bad burns. Broken bones, several times, but no burns.
Dan

@JennyD I have a chef brother in law who seems nonchalant about them, but I recommend avoiding where possible!
12:10
I have a pretty ugly scar on the back of my hand from drippy plastic. Thankfully that's my worst burn.
What's a good proxy server for Apache anyone?
@David19801 haproxy?
thanks
@David19801 varnish ?
isn't varnish a cache thing? basically, i'm looking for a vpn i think...

@JennyD Opposite. One small scar from a burn on my little finger from a soldering iron accident in school, but at 23 no broken bones.
@David19801 Do you have ssh access to that server?
12:13
ssh -D 8080 <serverIP>
Then configure your browser to use a socks proxy at host localhost with port 8080
@tombull89 I've got a friend who's had more breaks than there are bones in the human body. He's a stunt man...
hmmm...interesting...and that works with javascript on the site too?
Well, I guess @ScottPack has that covered.
@David19801 Yes, it'll pass everything to/from that site through your ssh tunnel

Q: Why don't more organizations use inside-to-inside NAT?

MDMarraInside-to-inside NAT aka NAT loopback solves hairpin NAT issues when accessing a web server on the external interface of an ASA or similar from computers on the internal interface. This prevents DNS admins from having to maintain a duplicate internal DNS zone that has the corresponding RFC1918 ad...

@David19801 It does everything except DNS, which is a browser setting.
@MDMarra Hm, based on that question someone asked about DNS entries eh?
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/16579309/ubuntu-ldap-invalid-credentials

Is anyone faced this issue?
last question: is it possible to use my US server in the proxy settings in firefox options somehow?
@David19801 Reread our conversation.

@NathanC it's a discussion I've had on and off with various people here and in my professional life and no ones ever given a good answer

@JennyD I dont think the two Not a very good one? ;)
So I figured I'd throw it in a question and see why people are so resistant to inside-to-inside NAT configs
@MDMarra network engineering is in public beta
@Dan He was born with part of his left leg missing. He's been overcompensating ever since...
Right but it's still on topic here. In my experience network folks never enable it while combo net/sysadmins are more likely to

@MDMarra I'm betting because some people just don't know about it

A: Why don't more organizations use inside-to-inside NAT?

Meiko WatuBecause if your server is getting hacked, then the attacker is right in your local network with your fileservers, printers, clients, etc etc. Check http://www.shorewall.net/FAQ.htm#faq2 for different approaches, but from the time I learned about NAT and networking, it is BAD BAD BAD :-)

And this is what SF is becoming
12:26
@MDMarra wrong tense .. has become :(
@MDMarra I think my brain shriveled up and died.
@MDMarra For some reason that I can't figure out, our notwork staff won't give us inside-to-inside NAT, even though it would make all our lives a lot easier. And they won't tell us why. I wish someone would answer your question with an actual reasonable answer.
I think we need to get our cron canonical question a bit higher in the cron rankings. If someone has time/inclination to review and wants to flag/v-t-c any that are applicable as a dupe of serverfault.com/questions/449651/… I'll be happy to hammer them while I can

@Iain EXPN v-t-c
Oh...there's not even a purpose in building this module - it's already installed. Whoops.
12:28
vote-to-close
@Iain Thanks
@JennyD i was spoiled. At my first job that had a large deployment we had it configured on juniper gear. I just assumed it was the way of the world. It worked fine and I used it for years. It existed there for well over a decade. Now I can't convince people to turn it on anywhere
np
Dan
Dan
@MDMarra It's been years since I've had to worry about this stuff - what you're proposing is NAT reflection by default, yeah?
@Iain If I have the energy when I get home I'll give it a go
12:31
@Dan sorry not sure what NAT reflection is
Dan
Dan
@MDMarra Sorry, NAT hairpinning / loopback
On an ASA a client on the internal interface can't communicate with a server being NATted on the external interface via the public IP unless you do inside-to-inside NAT or maintain a separate view/zone with internal addresses
I'm saying why don't people just turn that shit on and stop messing with a second zone that has internal addresses
Dan
Dan
I think we're talking about the same thing

Q: Is NAT Loopback on my router a security problem?

w3dSome DSL routers prevent NAT loopback. Security is sometimes cited as the reason. Is NAT loopback really a security issue? And if so, how is this exploited? NAT loopback... where a machine on the LAN is able to access another machine on the LAN via the external IP address of the LAN/router (with...

Just send everything through the firewall at the public IP and configure the firewall not to choke on it
Brb.
@MDMarra It's not always accurate. That's been my experience.
Not deterministic, really...
12:46
What's the protocol for self plugging your own answers as canonical/wiki?
@Dan maybe
I can't tell
@David19801 There are hundreds, if not thousands, of websites and blog posts about using ssh as a SOCKS proxy. In the end, it's really pretty simple. The trick is finding the proxy settings for your browser.
Honestly, I'm looking but I'm still stuck...
Dan

@ewwhite Hehe

questions I have...Where do I put the username and password for my server in the ssh line? do I need to use the root username on the server? do I need to close the ssh thing when I am finished or will it close when I close the terminal?
@Dan There are a few ways to handle this. I'm not sure what @MDMarra wants.
do I always have to use 8080? what does that represent?
@JennyD thanks - no pressure. How did the driving class go?
@Iain It got cancelled. The instructor keeps sheep, and one of them had been killed by a lynx, so she needed to stay at home and sort things out.
@David19801 there is a whole world of documentation you need to get to grips with
12:51
@David19801 Whatever port you want your ssh to locally bind to.
@JennyD :(
She came out and found the lynx right by the dead sheep. A bit more excitement than you'd like.
@Iain I'd say even a lmgtfy would assist :)
@JennyD We don't get lynx in the UK
@David19801 Short answer (if you just want to use it as a proxy) is it doesn't really freaking matter. Long answer will require you to learn TCP/IP networking.
12:52
@jscott what's wrong with man ssh ?
@Iain There aren't that many in this area, and they're an endangered species in this country
@Iain If ssh'ing into his server is a barrier, he may also have trouble instantiating man.
@jscott bummer
can you give me an example of what the ssh command would be with a username and password? I currently have: ssh -D 8080 187.44.34.223 and how do I close it when finished please?
12:54
@ewwhite What isn't accurate?
@David19801 Press CTRL+D, or type exit (press Enter) to close the connection when finished.
right, so, when I do the ssh command in terminal that sets up a permanent change in my mac sending all traffic to my server right? and that stays until I type exit, but until then it is permanent?
@David19801 It is only as "permanent" as the ssh connection to the remote host.
...so if I close terminal using the X in the corner, will that close the connection?
@David19801 What it does is it opens up a tunnel, and when you type exit or ctrl-d or close the terminal window, the tunnel is closed.
12:59
No traffic is sent to the remote host unless an application is explicitly told to use port 8080.
Then you have to also tell your browser to send traffic through that tunnel, by setting proxy to localhost port 8080
right! so, I open terminal, put in the ssh command, then, with terminal still open, go to firefox, setup proxy settings?
@David19801 Exactly.
cool...ok, so I guess I use socks? the first box is my server ip, what do I enter for the port?
EIGHTY EIGHTY
13:01
!!@!!!!!!1
Have you been paying attention?
No he hasn't
yes! k gotcha...ok, only problem now is the ssh command itself...
And the first box is your LOCALHOST, 127.0.0.1
@David19801 have a play around and learn something yourself ffs
13:02
I'm trying...
@David19801 It can be a bit overwhelming having four different people shouting at you via chat.
but i'm close to a solution now so it feels ok...
hehe...true...
@David19801 very ;)
in firefox, it says "no proxy for" and says localhost in the box...are you sure I enter localhost in the socks part and not my server ip?
and do I need to delete localhost from the box below?
@David19801 I see your confusion here. Second.
13:06
k
@jscott He said Mac, so that will use the global proxy settings.
Would be ok if I move this answer serverfault.com/questions/508531/… to a community wiki about tcpdump/networking?
@David19801 "No proxy for" is because usually you would have another remote server as your surf proxy, but if you e.g. have your own development web server on your own mac, you wouldn't go through a remote surf proxy to get to your local webserver. That's localhost.
@ScottPack Oh! How fancy.
@user I don't think there's a need to CW
It's kind of an antiquated holdover from days past
13:07
@user why ?
@jscott ...yeah.... If you try to open the proxy settings in a browser on OSX it redirects you to the System Preferences network pane.
@David19801 And the tunnel thing is you are opening a tunnel with one end on your mac, and the other end on your server in the US. You want the traffic to enter the tunnel through the entrance on your mac, and exit through the server in the US. So that's why you're setting localhost as your proxy.
@ScottPack What of about:config?
@David19801 You can also enter your own IP address, 127.0.0.1, instead of the name localhost.
Jenny - thanks! should I need to delete the localhost in the box that says "no proxy for"?
13:09
@David19801 As long as you don't actually have a web server on your mac, it makes no difference whatsoever
@jscott I don't know, I've never configured proxy settings in there.
serverfault.com/questions/508632/… (oh good, it's deleted already)
@MDMarra Oh I didn't know that. @Iain well i think it would be good since there are quite a few questions about tcpdump , but since it's out of date well, ok :)
@MDMarra Your -1 made them reconsider, quickly.
Guys I'm going to give up. Thanks everyone for trying to help but I just have too many questions and will bore you lol
bye
13:11
@David19801 Good luck!
@David19801 I think the problem you're running into is that the questions you're asking require a much stronger technical networking background than I think you have. It makes it hard to give good answers without tremendous amounts of background material. :/

Q: The dns-server isn’t responding

mshI’ve built my test network with three computers: Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 7 Enterprise and Windows XP. Each computer has a fixed IP-address. There are no error messages on the Windows XP computer, but on the both Windows 7 computers the following error message is shown: The dns-server isn’t ...

@ewwhite what are you not understanding about my hairpin NAT question?
@MDMarra It can be enabled per static NAT rule.
oooh a close NARQ flag on @MDMarra's Hairpin NAT question - declined A moderator ...
13:19
Really?
@ewwhite That's not really the intent of the question. What I'm asking is <however it can be enabled> why isn't that the typical configuration
I can believe it. Looks like a bit of a RTFM type question.
@ScottPack Wait, what?
:)
Love ya man.
13:20
Oh joy, our host did an "upgrade" and it ended up knocking our corporate website down...
It directs to an apache test page now lol
So can any of you VMWare nerds explain to me why the View client is now called the Horizon View client?
@ewwhite Basically, why is it common to keep a second internal zone with RFC1918 addresses when a couple lines in an ASA can make that unnecessary
@ScottPack They're realigning their products. Horizon is going to be their VDI line
vCloud is their datacenter automation line
etc
@MDMarra So View isn't good enough?
@MDMarra I can't answer it but my reading of it is that you want a generic explanation rather than the specific (TL?) one you got from@ewwhite ?
It made sense to me why the rename from VDI to View, but this seems like just Yet Another Marketing Rename.
13:22
@MDMarra In the Cisco, it's a checkbox...
@ScottPack There are additional things they're buying like Mirage that are going into the VDI product offerings
So I enable it when I have a public-facing site...
(where the site is accessed via DNS)
@MDMarra So they're expanding the product and renaming it to server to the new expanded product line?
I have a lot of things that are IP-only, though.
@Iain His answer doesn't really answer anything (I think). It reads to me like "Well there are a few ways you can configure it, but some people don't"
13:24
@MDMarra sorta
Using split-DNS is, by far, the most common way it's deployed and I was hoping there would be a reason why that I was unaware of
It doesn't appear to answer the question posed anyway
(because it seems dumb to me to curate a second disjoint DNS zone)
I turn it on at the firewall level, but why not take care of it at the DNS level? That's how I was taught. It was always expressed to me as a limitation/feature of the Cisco firewall.
So that dns-server isn't responding guy ...the "test" network has no internet access.
13:26
@ewwhite See, as a systems person, I was always taught that taking care of it at the DNS level was wrong
Hmm...there's the problem.
If you can just specify a subnet for inside-inside NAT translation and be done with it, why is that wrong compared to curating a completely disjoint and separate DNS zone internally for resources that already have valid resource records published publicly?
I know you're approaching the question from produce companies and whatnot that just need 2-3 boxes on the Internet. But I'm approaching it from places with 50+ boxes behind that external interface
At that scale and with more than one cook in the kitchen, maintaining more than one DNS zone for the same set of servers seems silly and error prone when it can be handled by a couple of NAT statements on the firewall
@MDMarra the bounty on that question is removed it you'd like to start the closure ...
@MDMarra I also have a few thousand domains here at work... We don't use NAT on our Cisco firewalls here.
And that is the best solution
13:30
@ewwhite So you set them up in transparent mode?

"For a school project" ...hmm
I think at the SMB level, you're going to see NAT/PAT.
@ewwhite are you having a not answer the question day ? That NTP answer doesn't address the question posed either ?
13:31
@ScottPack I have so many level of iptables, Cisco ASA clusters, ACLs, I don't even know.
@Iain dude changed the original question
Hi Mark,

I stumbled upon your web site while google searching for an upcoming project that I have coming up for a client. BTW, great article on not using the .local for a domain name....very intuitive!

Anyway, I'll make this brief and hope you can shed some light unto this matter that I am dealing with:

My client is on windows and Exchange 2003 with multiple locations, each being on a subdomain. So, there are no root domains. They would like to merge all of these domains unto a single domain as well as migrate to windows 2008.
@ewwhite doesn't look like you answered the original either ?
@MDMarra You'll be replying with a quote including @ewwhite's hourly rate ?
@Iain shrugs Whatevs.
I got bigger problems.
13:35
@Iain I was thinking of replying with: ADMT
Hm, we seem to have a chronic downvoter in our midst.
I only flag
All the questions on the front page are -1 now if they were 0
Well, the top 5 are at least
Probably @MDMarra. He's a known hater.

@user downvoting questions is free - get with it

What's wrong with Hate?
Hate is the path to the Dark Side... Y'know, where all the good Force powers are
@NathanC noting wrong with downvoting providing it's correct and I can't see any that are (IMO) wrong there
@gWaldo TFIF - raving like that you clearly need a weekend
@user there are thousands of them in the trascript
@Iain Truth, but honestly, I'm pretty down with Force Choke/Lightning regardless of exhaustion levels
Force Choke/Lightning ?
13:44
@Iain I'm relatively new, so I'll be in my bunk

@Iain or if you prefer "Force [choke, lightning]"
Ugh, our sonicwall apparently has it out for me. It likes to randomly drop connections to sites like twitter/facebook
@gWaldo I didn't understand the reference
@Iain Are you saying that you haven't seen Star Wars?!
@NathanC that's 'cause they all suck
13:47
@NathanC That just means that the top 5 questions are bad
:)
@gWaldo Not recently and not more than the original 3 and I wasn't impressed with any beyond the first :(
if my server IP tables blocks everything, do I need to open the port 8080 in the ip tables first if I want to ssh tunnel?
@Iain I... I don't know what to say.... <sob />
After @MDMarra's example in meta yesterday, is it surprising that a whole bunch of questions in a row are garbage? - I downvoted and VtC'd.
@gWaldo :(
13:49
@David19801 No, you need to open port 22 - that's the port for SSH.
right! so if I changed that before to 2000 for security, then it should all be ok right?
@David19801 If the remote server listens on port 2000, yes.
non-standard ports. yuck
i was told its more secure...
13:51
@MDMarra It does reduce the amount of junk in the auth.log
security through obscurity
when I enter in terminal: ssh -D 8080 -f -C -q -N [email protected]
@David19801 It's more secure in that hiding your door key in the plastic fake rock by your door is more secure than leaving it on the doorstep.
it does nothing special and just goes to a new line...is this correct?
Dan
Dan
@Iain + "isn't"
13:52
@David19801 Quite correct
@David19801 Any port scanner is going to see the SSH banner on 2000 and adapt their attack. All you're doing it reducing brute-force dumb script kiddie attacks, which won't be successful anyway if you use something like fail2ban or SSH Keys or even just a good password.

Q: Should I change the default SSH port on linux servers?

sharp12345Is there any advantage in changing the SSH port, I've seen people do that, but I can't seem to find the reason why. If you have a strong password and/or a certificate, is it useful for anything? Edit: I should also mention that I am using iptables rules to limit brute forcing attacks, only 5 l...

I had fail2ban for a while...it tends to fill up quite quickly.
There's nothing I hate mote than walking into an environment and seeing RDP running on port 10000 or SSH on 2222
@NathanC I only allow ssh login with keys, it makes it easier.
13:54
ok, I removed the little letter things, now it says the connection was refused. which is correct because i use a non standard port...so! how do I make this talk to port 2000 on my server? ssh -D 8080 [email protected]
Yep, I have the same.
I used to have openvpn set up and only had sshd listening on the private IP address, but I ended up switching out servers and it was more trouble than it was worth.
@David19801 How do you usually specify a non-standard port for a socket?
I'll give you a hint. It has the same name as something involved in making human waste
-p2000
WWOOOOOO!!! it works!!!! :):):)
and it all works...slow though :( but awesome!!! haha
@David19801 Yay!!!
glad I didn't give up and thanks for helping me right to the end guys :D
later
13:58
@David19801 please don't make a habit of dropping in here like that, it's way too painful

Really glad it works for you now.
@JennyD fix my computer plz
@tombull89 Have you tried turning it off and on again?

@tombull89 you missed the part about "not entitled"
i need it now. y wont u help me.
@ScottPack D:

It's true that David needed a lot of help, but he was at least being nice about it and not being a jerk when people didn't respond immediately. Which is the only reason I spent the time.

that had a flag earlier too
haha, really?!
yeah NC
hilarious
people have no sense of humor
I guess whoever threw it didn't known how well you know each other so to speak
14:02
Or that I worked in higher ed, so I know the truth!!
WTF? Someone starred me for saying something nice and positive? What is the Comms Room coming to...

@JennyD He said "plz"...
@JennyD Please stand by. Normal service will be resumed shortly.
@JennyD: by which we mean, we need to find that person and beat the nice out of him. For his own good ;p
ooh a pink and fluffy comms room that'd be something to see
14:04
@gWaldo That spelling is "go straight to ignore list"...
lol, da
funny but I tried turning my shared desktop off and on again
now I'm leaving it on overnight
TOMMORROW, I start ripping stuff out
@Iain I think that would be "DevOps Cafe" (He said, trolling himself...)
@gWaldo: devs are assholes too
14:05
I know; I'm both.
@Iain brb changing avatar to bunny
some of them are even extremely intellegent, but have the social skills of banana slugs
@tombull89 Bunnies aren't just cute like everybody supposes! They have those hoppy legs and twitchy little noses...
and nasty, vicious, pointy teeth, yes, I know.
"What an eccentric performance..."
14:07
I used to have a cartoon bunny with an axe as a ava at one point ;p
@tombull89 done :)
It'll change in here soon too I guess
@JourneymanGeek I used to have an axe.
and my sword!
@JennyD: When I get a place of my own, I am having a goddamned sledgehammer behind my door ;p
14:09
@JourneymanGeek I used to have the axe hanging by my desk at work, back when I was doing abuse/postmaster stuff
or maybe something a little more... english bunny-comic.com/38.html
@JennyD: alas. I make do with a crowbar, a VERY small, but famous crowbar.
@JennyD Did you have to "ax" people questions?
Good old python
@NathanC I saw the axe more as an answer kind of thing...
eh, not a bad time to rediscover an old comic
14:11
Ah.
@JourneymanGeek I had a crowbar too. I think that might be around at home somewhere.
"This person gets an axe to the face. This person also gets an axe to the face."
this comic is more violent than I remember
@NathanC There was a discussion on one of the swedish IT mags web site once, about spam. One of our customers wrote "Don't spam from Algonet/Telenordia. Our postmaster has got an axe."
That was a very proud moment.
(I'll stop now, least until I find the goddamned axe)
@JennyD Ahaha, who need spamfilters when you have an axe?
@NathanC The company had had a very bad rep as a spammer haven; they hired me because I was at that point somewhat known in the anti-spam community. Seeing that comment made me feel that I'd succeeded.
even better
@JennyD Ah, yes, I'd consider that a victory comment :P
14:29
Dev on SU asking how to move data from S3 to MySQL: superuser.com/questions/596703/… anyone want to give him some help since he will never get an answer there?
@Tanner more of a stackoverflow question perhaps? He needs to iterate his bucket
@Tanner DBA might be better
and download all the files and insert them into the database ( which is a bad idea)
@Iain Think it's worth migrating?
@Tanner no idea I don't frequent DBA
@Tanner it's actually a crappy question because he doesn't say what he means by files and exactly what he wants to do with them
