@MDMarra you're all about the Benjamins... Mooola... Dinero...
yep
I didn't get into IT for the hours
BTW, @ewwhite, I assume my payment is pending you being paid?
It's not a big deal, just looking for a rough timeline
@MDMarra Correct. I don't get paid, you don't get paid.
GET PAID!
02:06
Whats up @MDMarra
When do ya start the new job
02:24
@mossy 3/18
I work this week, next week off, then new job
:D
Yeah, I can't wait
02:45
Oh great, a devops article giving security advice plusbryan.com/…
....
@MDMarra They failed when they gave their developers sudo access.

1 hour later…
04:09
@MDMarra That dude should seriously take it down
It's so horribly wrong, I hope no one follows it just because he's well-known
04:19
@MDMarra Here's how the other devops are responding: news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5316093
@MDMarra Don't have any of those problems on Windows. "Oh, you don't have admin rights on Server B, my bad son, clickety click all done!"

2 hours later…
06:59
@MDMarra You asked about a NETBIOS name.
What should it be?
"SERVER"
0
A: PHP-FPM with apache

K.K PatelYes, It is possible. According to me Nginx is more flexible, light loaded server than Apache. I am personally using Nginx to run php-fpm.

Look, we have experts here!
@MichaelHampton He's not a native speaker, I'm not sure he knows how pretentious that sounds
07:37
Good moaning!
There's a big yellow thing burning in my eyes. Haven't seen that in months!
@ewwhite We want to upgrade our pentest lab equipment, I was wondering if HP Storageworks are performant enough to run virtual machines off? We would fill them up with 24 SATA disks
08:09
@LucasKauffman Which device?
you wouldn't use SATA drives...
it should be "HP Midline" drives.
There are two external enclosures... the D2700 and 2600, with 25 x 2.5" bays or 12 x 3.5" bays.
unless you're talking about the SAN devices, like the P2000 G3. That's a standalone SAN, while the D2700 and D2600 are intended to be connected directly to a server.
08:21
@MDMarra Arghhhh noooo stab stab stab. Everything in that article is WRONG. Somebody please shoot that idiot.
08:36
@MichaelHampton Fixed...

A: Lots of unused memory on EL6 compared to EL5

@ewwhite ... WTF?
@MichaelHampton surprised?
@ewwhite I don't get it. I'd love to see an explanation.
devops security is good for comedy, not much else.
@RobM Comedy? I thought DevOps was a tragedy. In three acts...
08:43
@MichaelHampton Shitty answer?
@ewwhite It's just "oh, I turned off transparent hugepages and look ma, it worked!" Doesn't explain why it worked. Or get any closer to the real problem...
@ewwhite an old MSA70
@LucasKauffman Do you already have it?
Use SAS disks if you can.
SATA will choke on that unit.
it'll be 1.5Gb SATA
@ewwhite no not yet, we are still deciding
go D2600 or D2700 if you can
08:50
@MichaelHampton read your shakespeare - every good tragedy has a bitter-sweet moment of wry laughter before the stabbing begins.
I have packages available... like $5k for a D2600 full of 2TB SAS disks.
@ewwhite ooh will keep that in mind :P
and thanks ^^
@ewwhite Haha. Just read the product description. Little IT expertise required.
serverfault.com/review/suggested-edits/59608 How in hell did that happen?
@MichaelHampton every once in awhile, you'll find that some people can't find the power button...
09:06
@MarkHenderson Especially since he's trying to install privoxy on his Raspberry Pi.
Where's my 200 OK?
09:37
I think I know way too much about dding data off disks.
it's the sign of an experienced sysadmin - even as someone who's worked with windows more than *nix, I still find myself resorting to it more than a few times.
I submit, then, for your consideration and pile-on downvotes...
1
A: Experiences with using `dd` to copy multi-partition, multi-FS device

Michael HamptonIf you have to do this, and you have to be in a really bad place to even think about doing this... It's safest to copy the partitions individually. For instance: dd if=/dev/sdb1 | ssh user@host "dd of=sdb1.img" dd if=/dev/sdb2 | ssh user@host "dd of=sdb2.img" Wait a few minutes or hours for t...

Hell, I've use live Ubuntu disks for data recovery.
oh god
Haters gonna hate.
09:43
@tombull89 not 'oh god' at you, 'oh god' at trying to back up a disk with so many different file systems on it in one lump.
@RobM oh right :P how would you even manage to create such a disk?
with fdisk and a lot of patience.

@RobM Japan. Obviously.

@Chopper3 bought the Bioshock double pack on the weekend to play through and prepare for Infinite - the first one may be a couple of years old but it still looks sweet.
@tombull89 It was buying Infinite that got me the free copy of BS1
@Chopper3 oh, nice. I saw that Infinite gets released first week of half term - which I'm working :@
Sim City and Arma3 (alpha) this week :)
@Chopper3 ArmA 3 - looks sweet. Sim City - I can never guarantee my internet, so that's a no-buy for me.
@tombull89 see the article about how arma3 does ballistics? fricking mental, not sure nature/physics is so in depth :)
12:03
@Chopper3 I think my dad would like ARMA3 - I showed him a video where a player used the ARMA2 map editor to spawn in a ton of tanks, choppers and airplanes and watch them duke it out. Spectacular, to say the lest.
@tombull89 yeah, son loves it, really plays to how he is, he showed my daughter how to play it and she just filled a field with animals and one minigun :)
@Chopper3 I really really want to play SC but I'm not going to because of all the Origins crap
annoying isn't it
If I spend $60 on a game, I'd better be able to play it on a train or an airplane
I'm just going to build a proper shithouse of a city and grief the fuck out of whoever lives next to me
12:07
especially a game like sc
small maps too apparently
Haha just send them all your garbage
@Chopper3 how are you feeling? You must be partway through the last round now right
yeah, much better today thanks, very weak physically, but less tired, mouth's very metalic today and my stomach's far from right but yeah, on the way up
Good to hear
@Chopper3 haha, gambling city with casinos and no police = fun times!

hmm, bounties are always 7 days?
ah, the faq says yes

Morning
posted on March 04, 2013 by Matt Simmons

I learned a new word yesterday. I love it when that happens. The word is hamartia, and although it's often used to describe a hero's key weakness, Isabel Hyde refers to Humphrey House's work (among others), and says that modern (as of the 1960s) scholars interpret the use of hamartia as being, an error which [...]

@MichaelHampton Did you get Duo working? Let me know if I can help (I work for Duo).

Q: Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard welcome screen hangs

RichardCromptonWindows Server 2008 R2 appears to be hanging while loading the OS. The server gets to the welcome screen and appears to be loading, but this process for 20-30 mins before the OS loads. The screen also displays the message "setting user profile" while loading. The system only started running slow...

How hard is it to answer a simple followup question?
'morning
@MDMarra Good to hear! Any feedback for us?
@trhaynes Oh, I haven't used it, but at least 4-5 of the other regulars in here have installed/configured it in the last week or two
@mossy sup
It's cool to have employees around from the products we use. It always makes me smile to see Gerald Combs answer a Wireshark question, for example.
Or John Carmack answer that video latency question on SU
14:00
@Cole Just found out we need to take pictures for our new ID cards and I still look drunk from saturday.
@mossy win. Now when you come into work drunk - everyone will think you just look like that.
I don't want to be the "drunk guy" at work again. :(
@trhaynes several of us have it working just fine
@MDMarra Can you get someone from Brocade in here? gets bat ready
Nah, storage is for weirdos
3
Sorry man
14:06
@Iain awesome, great to hear
So on Friday (afternoon, natch) our entire datacenter went offline. Catastrophic storage failure. Over the weekend, the HDS team looking at the firmware bug tells us to stop doing volume creation or allocation. This morning, the very expensive (and seemingly underqualified) consultant from HDS shows up ready to start "helping" with migrations.

I'm going back home.
He can't do anything until we resume migrations, and we can't do that until we get the box to stop screwing up
@Basil ouch
@Cole I'm starting to see when @MDMarra means
@Basil about storage being for weirdos?
@Cole yeah
14:13
I concur
Stupid NetApp didn't come up from a reboot this weekend
@trhaynes it's working great for me :) Though I'm a bit disappointed that it doesn't integrate properly with ssh key based auth (forwards etc. are set up before duo auth)
@trhaynes maybe it could hook into AuthorizedKeysCommand? Don't know if the AuthorizedKeysCommand can do challenge/responses, but at least it's in the authentication phase.

I need to go and pack my stuff, but i'm having major problems getting off the sofa

I don't really like PHP. I'm not sure if it's because I'm not very good at it, or if it just sucks.
PHP is kind of ugly.
Dan
Dan
@mossy I cut my teeth on PHP, so I'm forced to like it in a naive nostalgic kind of way. But yeah...
@Dan Yeah I'm not trying to say PHP is bad, and you should feel bad. But I'm kind of.. "wtf is going on here" when working with it sometimes.
oh snap

Fair play @DennisKaarsemaker :D
Right, I need to stop lazing around and get my arse to Manchester
Laters all
@tombull89 hey, anything to get the issue fixed. I can comfortably say that we have some smart people here and none of us were able to solve it.
we currently have tickets open with hp and red hat, but that's a slow process at best...

Q: Building a large scale email service

jldupontHow would I build a large scale (1M+ inboxes) email system out of standard products or open-source components? I am not interested in the Oracle-type solutions. Ideally, I would like a solution that scales horizontally i.e. symmetrical architecture where we just add some servers for more inboxes.

@ewwhite someone with that kind of money and system surely can afford professional services
@ewwhite You hire me and give me an unlimited budget
Perhaps... 1M+ inboxes, though?
15:10
@ewwhite "Google does it!"
@voretaq7 will it be Squirrelmail?
@ewwhite NO! No. no. a little bit
sounds like he wants a multi-tenency kind of setup if he wants 1M+ inboxes
@ewwhite Do you not like squirrels? Are you a squirrel hater?!
:(
@voretaq7 They're a step up from porcupines...
15:12
hate squirrelmail
@ewwhite Porcupig...porcuswine... the little animal with the quills!
I liked SquirrelMail when there was nothing else small scale like it around. RoundCube can use a SQLite DB now though. Much prettier interface and functionally at least as good as SM.
@ChrisS I want something that authenticates against a server using IMAP & lets me send/receive emails
I want zero other features from webmail
That's pretty close to the default configuration of RC
You probably want SMTP authentication for sending e-mails, but RC doesn't judge if you want to run an open relay.
I also like TLS... CalDAV and CardDAV are on my list of things I'd like to work on if I ever have that much free time.
It'd probably work out quite well for society on the whole if I did something dumb, got put in prison for a while, sat there and just coded the whole time... I wonder if they'd let me have a computer in my cell.
@ewwhite you love squirrelmail
15:23
@MDMarra nah
but I did go house-looking.
Oh yeah?
@MDMarra the place we lost is available again.
@ChrisS I prefer that it use localhost as the SMTP relay
so it's like a second-chance
15:24
Are you putting in another bid?
And do you know why it fell through?
@voretaq7 That's the default.... Same with IMAP.
@MDMarra it fell through because the other party said no inspection-contingency, but then started getting weird about the inspection.
I like roundcube
@voretaq7 See! Even the Wise-guy likes RoundCube =]
@ChrisS I neither like nor dislike any webmail software
I find it all sucks, and is contaminated by the suck of email
15:28
@ewwhite I would too
RC is written in PHP if you need another reason to not like it.
Here's 800k, I don't care if it's falling apart inside.

Wait, I care now.,
@MDMarra no, the other people got the winning bid by saying that they didn't care about the inspection.
Right
but then came back, saying, "we care about the inspection"
15:29
Yeah I remember you said that
I'm saying that they were dumb and should be rightfully concerned about dropping 8000 bennies on a place with no inspection
@ewwhite Well SOMEONE didn't get a signed contract... fools
:P
@voretaq7 the seller killed the deal and texted my agent.
@MDMarra so is it a sign?

Q: Can I use ipmitool to determine if an IPMI link is 'up'?

Stefan LasiewskiI am having a very frustrating time configuring the IPMI interface on a Supermicro box. Unfortunately with IPMI it is not always clear which interface is being used by the BMC. The Supermicro Embedded BMC Manual says that the active interface is determined during the initial power up: Note 1...

@ewwhite I wouldn't spend almost a million bucks on something that they don't want you to inspect
that's a red flag
RED
FLAG
RUN
@MDMarra Oh, we can inspect it.
or get it inspected
15:35
in a hot market, people waive the inspection contingencies because it usually results in credits from the seller...
it makes your offer stronger...
Hi All
@ewwhite Ya, but you have to be super rich to not care about inspection
I understand the financial side of it and how it makes you look more appealing
But that shit's for people that can drop 800k on a house and don't care if they walk in and say "oops, here's another 150k of work we need to do!"
The amount of money being discussed here is making me uncomfortable.
You guys are ballin'
@ewwhite @MDMarra Hot market or no, I would never waive the inspection. I've seen places that looked great, and post-inspection the report essentially said "I think this building should be condemned."
@mossy Oh, I'm not ballin
15:39
@MDMarra the other person was a LEED-certified architect or something... so he brought a moisture sensor and checked the place out.
I live in a 1br 600sq ft apartment
but then came back with his parents, and they were like, "nope"
@ewwhite "nope" or "LOLNOPE"?
@mossy You know how you can really tell I'm not ballin? I drive a Honda Civic.
@voretaq7 atmail
15:40
@DennisKaarsemaker not shopping :P
@MDMarra Ya but you also make like triple payment on it
I will continue running squirrelmail until it requires effort
@mossy Yeah, I'll own it in April
@mdmarra they're selling because of a divorce.
15:41
(seriously. I do NOTHING except install the new version when there's a major security thing)
But still, people that are ballin drive BMW wagons
@MDMarra True dat
I like the 3-digit optimism :)
@MDMarra I drive a VW Rabbit
@voretaq7 I almost got a Fit
same thing
15:42
@MDMarra Ballers drive X5s with custom spinners
more accurately, their soccer-mom trophy wives do. But we all know who holds the balls in such relationships.
@ewwhite capitalize on their broken hearts!
@MDMarra Maybe you can get spinners with your new job
that'd be kool
yep
I'm going to be traveling a lot more with the new job
spinners.mdmarra.local

Maybe I should upgrade and give the soon-to-be-wife the Civic.
I think I'll go get an Escalade. Those are reasonable, right?
15:43
@MDMarra and buy a hybrid so your transportation expenses don't double?
I bought the Civic so no one would want to be a passenger in it and I'd get out of driving places
It's worked well so far
I'll take an Escalade. On the same terms as I'd take a Citation X -- "I'm getting it for free, and someone else is paying the fuel bill"
I mean, it's comfy, I got heated leather seats, in dash GPS, etc
nobody wants to be a passenger in my car. Which is fine because I don't want any passengers.
STOP FUCKING CRYING I'M ONLY DOING 80!
It's effectively a one seater
15:45
@mdmarra I should upload pix.
@voretaq7 rabbits are roomy though, right?
Do people just not like you? :)
@MDMarra I have corolla.
I have a 2-door, so it's effectively a 2-seater
@MDMarra I can put two people in the back in an emergency, yes.
@MDMarra Actually, it's a corolla S - It looks FAST
@ewwhite of the bling house?
@mossy S is for SPEEDY
15:45
I just refuse to drive like an old woman
@MDMarra it's not BLING
so when I'm doing 80 down the expressway or cornering between 40 and 60 that scares some people apparently
I don't know how bling had crept into my vocabulary lately, but I kind of like it.
Da comms room
@ewwhite do you have a cleaning service?
I'd hate to clean a place that big myself
Which is partially why I live in a tiny 1br
15:47
@MDMarra I hate to clean period...
I pick up after myself daily. I straighten out the livingroom and bedroom at the end of every day and turn the dishwasher on every night before bed. The kitchen and bathroom get cleaned every sunday
@voretaq7 What do you drive?
I've also taken to piling all of the shit that Katie leaves around the apartment in front of her dresser so she has to put it away in the morning before she can get clothed and go to work
Lol wow. Someone here used a copyright protected image on a blog post. $1,000 smackers
She's starting to get the hint
@mossy ?
15:49
my boss says - "The good news is that they make payment easy through their secure, online shopping cart!"
I need to get into that business
@Jacob 2008 rabbit, chipped, with custom suspension work.
@mossy Lawyering?
@voretaq7 The only thing more soul-sucking than sysadmining?
@Tanner pays better though.
@voretaq7 I don't know man, I just fix emailz
Or does the help desk suck out your soul while sysadmining requires it to be gone already?
15:52
@voretaq7 HP?
"Not qualified. Too much soul."
@mossy Happened to one of my friends - she created some publicity material for the gym she went to, to find it ripped off and used by a rivial gym and a number of blogs due to the picture in her designer profile coming up on 1st page of google image results.
@Jacob stock, or post chipping?
Well I have a feeling that these guys just search for the URL. If you're going to steal a image, at least host it yourself.
@voretaq7 both

@Jacob I live in New York little one - if you have more than 200HP in New York you're just wasting fuel
rare are the days when I can get the car up above 60MPH because of traffic. Rarer still are the days when I'm able to accelerate WOT.

Q: How to login Windows 7 user from command line?

tomaszsI have two accounts on Windows 7. I can set one account to auto-login. How can i make the second account login also the same time? Now i need to switch to the second account and switch back to the first one to do this.

facepalm
@voretaq7 I thought that was standard NYC driving: WOT || Locked Brakes
