@David sysadmin at college, developer for a professor and teaching assistant :)
built my first debian cluster there
still with nis, because ldap was scary
@DennisKaarsemaker nice
i probably couldnt do the last 2, but maybe the first one
So.. I'm at the stack exchange London party
should start looking at whats available at the schools themselves
Just met Joel :)
20:04
anyone has experience with dell poweredge server?
@happyninja yes, plenty
@Happyninja not since 2006-era 2850's
@Happyninja what are you asking about, specifically?
*licks @Cole *
yes: i got a E122E error
it happen twice today
20:06
Call dell support
Call dell
and look at the top right corner of this chat
First hit on google: "E122E. On-board regulator failed. Call support."
last time i called them they provide me the exact same information i already got in my technical manual
@Happyninja then escalate via your sales guy
i already have all this. i was just wondering if people had similar experience with
20:07
Who knew chat works on mobile
@TomO'Connor for a strange value of works, we do :)
HN.. we do.. we called support
and im not asking for technical support, i'm just out of idea about the issue
Call support
honestly, you should call dell support when you get a dell specific error
call support
20:08
lol
Hey I have an idea
why don't you call support?

Q: Network not working after fiddling with webmin

tenzinCan some please help me restore my networking, I have a VPS CENTOS6.3. Few minutes before it is working well, accept i can't connect to Yum repository. So I thought i can change some settings in Hostname and DNS Cleint under webmins network configuration. I changed the nameserver IP order (8.8.8...

The devops is strong in that one!
dear god
Fucking webmin
@Tanner the scotch tastes good today, good choice :)
20:19
I'm enjoying a heineken right now
@Iain I just noticed something funny.. the windows cursor does not get affected by f.lux
Heh. Over here Heiniken is regarded as diluted piss.
Mind you, I have no idea how Heiniken export tastes
@Hennes less diluted
yeah more taste
still tastes like piss
right now I'm drinking a swedish "folkøl" one
which means 3,5% alcohol.. a bit weak, but it works..
20:26
@TomO'Connor hayyy
heh fuck
our main webservers has adobe reader and java installed
they run ASP sides......
@pauska that makes perfect sense.
yes
it's wonderful
I just discovered that it also has flash installed
both for activex and firefox
no sorry, it's shockwave player and flash
shockwave player
Futuresplash!
@MDMarra uuh no, that's not where I live. Thankfully.
20:36
@pauska What they didn't want Macromedia Director as well?
@pauska turns out it's a bug in 2008 on Dell R710's with Brocade NICs
Are there any gaming clients installed on the server? At the rate you are finding thing I expect those to be the next item.

@Cole Remember, if anyone ever asks you What Would Jesus Do, getting pissed off and flipping tables is a totally valid response
20:46
@MarkHenderson I'll remember that
I don't think anyone does WWJD any more though; it was just a passing fad
I work next to a megachurch, so I see them come and go
I'm ready for a nap.
@Cole me too
i have a 7:30am class and i cant stop myself from staying up till 12/12:30 yet
@Cole Nanna naps on a Sunday afternoon are just about the best thing in my life at the moment
And now that I've said that it sounds so sad :(
@MarkHenderson ha ha! you're OLD.
@David I have class at 6
20:57
Nanna?
@Cole I'm 27 :(
@Cole fuck that, who the hell would even want to teach that
@David An early riser? I start work at 7.30 every day so it's not a stretch to move that back to 6 :p
@David Who wants to teach at all?
@Tanner People who can't "do"
21:02
@David online, VMware class
@MarkHenderson but kids age you dude
@Cole Haha, I'm glad I didn't have kids when I was 40 then
Like my boss who is 42 and just had his 6th kid a month ago
He's going to be 60 before his kids are finished school
SIXTH!?
I can barely handle a cat, nevermind 6 kids.
@MarkHenderson My uncle is 70 and has a 10 year old
@Cole It's absolute pandemonium every time I go to his house
and a 16 and 18 year old
he's the man
21:08
I don't know how he ever sleepds, let alone has time to fuck and make another baby
@MDMarra Whoah
No thankyou
@MarkHenderson I can imagine. It's nuts at my sister's and she has 3 kids
@MDMarra snap
Sorry but I feel bad for your cousin then. His Dad is going to be dead before he's had a chance to get to know him as an adult
could be
@MarkHenderson which IMO, is the best part
although the irish side (his side) of my family fucking lives forever though
21:10
@Cole No, sorry. Getting to know my parents as an adult has been a good experience
My mom and I had a super awesome conversation about my life last night.
And how is a 70 year old meant to do horseplay with a 10 year old?
@MarkHenderson that's what I was saying lol I get along with my parents so much better now.
@Cole OPhh, I thought you said dying before that could happen was good!
@MarkHenderson well, depends I suppose
21:10
Your Mum starting to understand?
My mom? Yeah, she'll get there
I explained to her now that I've had surgery it's like "well now what?" For the past few years my life and thoughts have been consumed by all this trans stuff - now I don't even think about it.
I need a new goal.
I've completed all my quests, I need some DLC!
@Cole go run marathons
@DennisKaarsemaker thought about it
or learn to be a sysadmin
2
-_-
I'm actually going back to school, that's my next goal.
21:16
@Cole Make mad paper
That's your goal
@MarkHenderson meh
I'm going back for a life sciences degree and GTFO of IT
@Cole I know, right. Here you'd be making Polymer. Doesn't have the same ring to it
I only make digits
bling bling
I applied at the local community college, so just need to send in my transcripts from HS.
21:19
@Cole What is "life sciences" exactly?
@MarkHenderson biology, ecology, pathology, etc
@Cole I just had this image of you putting your finger inside a dead person
5
I'm not sure why
I think my brain is broken
@MarkHenderson nope, I only put my fingers inside of living people.
@Cole ...not sure if better or worse
@MDMarra You said that one should be careful with DFS-R in Windows 2012.. care to elaborate?
21:22
@voretaq7 depends who you ask
@Cole Depends on the person in question
@TomO'Connor likes it
@Cole as giver or taker?
@DennisKaarsemaker both, he's vers.
@pauska I'd forgotten about that - it's quite bright isn't it
21:40
@pauska the service doesn't start up automatically after an unclean shutdown
@RyanRies blogged about it a while ago
Nothing shows stopping. Just a change in behavior
@MDMarra It's show-stopping if your system reboots, services don't come back, and then your pager starts going off...
@voretaq7 it's to prevent data loss from an inconsistent replication state and only on an unclean shutdown
And you can change that behavior back to the old way
if you dare mwahaha
hunter2
@MDMarra OH! I GET IT! I'm supposed to trust DFS-R the same way I trust EXT-family filesystems
(i.e. "Not even with my worst enemy's data!")
21:47
wow it really works! i can't see my banking password!!!!
ThisFuckingBankSucksBecauseTheyWontLetMeUseAPercentSignInMyPassword
(and then Chase says "I'm sorry that password is too long for me!")
The questions do get worse, don't they?
I've no idea what you're talking about @JeffFerland :-)

lol, just had everyone come congratulate me on 1 year w/ the company
got a card and cookie!
@ward @ewwhite app.strava.com/activities/42595383 bit foggy to start
i saw my boss's reflection in the window i face, turned around and everyone was behind me
@David The cake is a lie. The cookie is poisoned.
@David Lucky; sounds like you are in a healthy work environment :)
22:11
@David That's actually quite nice of them
My employer couldn't care less about my 1 year anniversary
actually, TWO cookies
@allquixotic I'm sure mine cares, but I'm also sure that no one's keeping track
yay!
Congrats, you've gained the privilege – cast close and reopen votes. Click ont he monkey to learn more
@David oh.... in that case ONE is poisoned.
@Hennes wait, we have monkeys now?!
22:13
Just checking who is awake.
@voretaq7 hopefully not the one i just ate
luckily i wasnt in here when everoyne crowded around behind me
@Hennes I'm still 333 rep away from that. Maybe more later, need to put a bounty on a question
Wow, a 2 year old question in the close queue.
I am pretty sure the backlog should be less than that. :)
@Hennes is it an audit question?
I expect it was. Voted as too localised after staring at it for a full minute. Not an obvious audit, but not 100% sure if it was too localised or not
22:18
@Hennes gets audited a lot; I think the system thinks he's trying to game it, so it has to keep checking up on him ;)
Poorly written question though. Not enough information exceprt 'Linux' etc (no distribution, no error logs etc)
@allquixotic Clearly @Hennes does not pay enough in taxes.
@voretaq7 he needs to slip a little kickback for Joel (Spolsky) into his SEC filings ;)
Heh, I think one on 7 questions is an audit
Either that or I got [un] lucky
where would this question be topical, if anywhere, on the SE network? and don't say SU -- professional data forensics aren't topical for us >_>
0
Q: How to find out when a disc (DVD) has been written/burned?

madeyourdayIs there a way to determine the date and time when a disc has been written/burned with high certainty? This is about data forensics and should be a solid proof. I already tried IsoBuster, but it didn't show the date/time of the track.

22:21
@allquixotic ask the user.
I'm surprised he doesn't want to know the precise location and the first and last name of the person who gave the command to initiate the burn, too
@dennis: you mean the rubber-hose-decryption method ?
If you don't trust them, you're screwed as there is not really a way beyond carbondating the disk, and the accuracy of that is measured in centuries :)
@Hennes it puts the lotion on its skin...
@DennisKaarsemaker that's not lotion, it's electrolyte gel.
Now it places the voltage selector knob on "11"...
serverfault.com/questions/152503/… .... asked Jun 18 '10 at 13:39 2010!
22:26
oh the joy of headless openoffice...
before wkhtmltopdf existed that generated lots of confirmation mails, invoices and whatnot for us
was actually pretty reliable, funnily enough
It puts the dye on its surface layer, or it gets the laser again.
@allquixotic it puts the phone on the hook, or it gets the lart again
I don't understand some sysadmins. This one company has spent about $500,000 developing software with us, and this software runs their entire business. If it goes down, they have 5000 jobs that just stop proceeding and 1500 employees jerking off. And I get an email complaining that the web server is using too much CPU. FFS it's taking 2.6 million hits a day and and runs reports on 10s of millions of datapoints. What the fuck do you want?!?!!!
@DennisKaarsemaker NOW IT TURNS OFF THE CAPSLOCK!
Caps Lock is an Abomination Unto Nuggan
22:29
@MarkHenderson Everything. For nothing. Because I'm a goddamn user.
@voretaq7 He's not a user, he's their sysadmin. I think I pissed him off because I keep providing polite suggestions on how they ahve their systems set up wrong
i.e. I shouldn't be getting 170KB/s throughput between two ESXi servers in the same DC - for some reason their traffic is routing out through their gateway and back in again
@MarkHenderson He's their sysadmin. He's your user.
@MarkHenderson routers gonna route...
11
22:30
(a fact I take great joy in pointing out to the SE community team when I make unreasonable requests :-)
@voretaq7 I think he got reamed when what should have been a 4 hour migration script took almost 90 hours to run because of that bottleneck in their system
@DennisKaarsemaker routers gonna null route
@voretaq7 Well i guess if you look at it that way...
I also don't get it - they drop half a mill over 3 years to get this project finished, but chicken out over spending another $5k on a new server, or even a few hundred bucks throwing in another 32Gb of ram
@MarkHenderson they don't see big pictures, only small issues. Very common condition among users.
@voretaq7 CRUISE CONTROL FOR COOL
22:34
@MarkHenderson The half-mill was the entire budget. No 10% reserve for post-deplyoment overruns.
Their initial SQL Server RAM allocation was 4Gb for a 120Gb database. They upped it to 32Gb but the poor server is still starved, as the database is now twice that size
@voretaq7 I'm beginning to suspect so. They under-specced their hardware and have no budget left to fix it
@MarkHenderson . . . "Twice the size of the largest query" something their DBAs never heard of?
or do they run abusive queries with parallelism greater than 2?
And the IT guy will be mega pissed of he has to spend some of his own budget to fix the hardware sizing for this project because he probably wants to buy a new SAN shelf or soemthing. Which I can relate to - it just annoys me
@voretaq7 ... what DBA?
@MarkHenderson I'm beginning to see the problem...
@voretaq7 Actually let me check their MAXDOP
0
22:36
when I sized our DB here I spec'd RAM = 2x size of the largest table
(because it's not that big a table - only like 12G)
I prefer RAM = size of database
@voretaq7 Heh that 90 hour script was actually so we could drop that table, as it sat in its own data group
or more accurate, size of hot data
It was a 50Gb table that's now been denormalised into other parts of the db
turns out we never query that table, and largest query is MAYBE 500MB and we run POSSIBLY 10 of them at a time...
@DennisKaarsemaker I prefer size of database myself - I assume all data is hot.
(in our case it actually is)
22:37
@voretaq7 good assumption, I stick to that unless I know not all data is hot, like our all-reservations-ever archive
@voretaq7 Heh reminds me of the first problem I had with him: "Mark, that SQL server is taking all 4gb of RAM and never releases it" and then "Mark, that SQL server is taking all 32Gb of RAM and never releases it"
And now it's "Mark, when we reboot that server the RAM usage is at 4Gb and it takes 2 days to get up to 32Gb. Why have we given it so much?"
@MarkHenderson "it's supposed to, you idiot. Why else did we buy the ram"
Actually or be accurate and quantify the temperature of our data: the most recent 90 days is "molten lava", and everything else is "Pizza right out of the oven"
@DennisKaarsemaker Surprising how people expect RAM to sit around being unused
@MarkHenderson "BECAUSE YOU WANTED IT TO BE FAST YOU GODDAMN COCKBITING RETARDED RHESUS MONKEYS!"
3
22:38
Unused RAM == wasted RAM
3
I wrote him a 2-page scathing response to his latest query about the web server usage
CC'd my and his boss in on it
Need picture of RAM passed out with bottle of tequila
See what happens I guess
(wasted RAM)
@voretaq7 Haha clever
@voretaq7 rimshot.mp3
22:40
ramshot?
Hi All
@Jacob Go on, brag about your sub millisecond ping to the moon. I've had enough goddamn latency issues this week as well
"Mark, why is this document taking 15 minutes to print over the terminal server?" "Maybe because you're in the back waters of Shitsville, Nowhere, The Sticks and you're printing a 25 page full colour PDF over EasyPrint... oh wait, EasyPrint is making your print job into a 1.Gb XPS... i'll get back to you"
Turns out certain versions of .NET 3 on XP make EasyPrint shit itself
@MarkHenderson Someone has a bit too much Estrogen today. What's wrong?
@Jacob Eh just other sysadmins who aren't as awesome as me who do things differently to the way I would do them (and thus are wrong)
@MarkHenderson BTW, It's like a 10 min walk to the local Google PoP :)
22:46
And managers from clients who push me to do 2 weeks of work in 2 days, and when I somehow pulled it off by pulling people from other projects, they call me up at 1.45pm before the 2pm deadline to find out "Are you done yet?" "I WOULD BE IF YOU WERENT CALLING ME"
They can go fuck themselves
I get really, really annoyed when people tell me how to do something before I've had a chance to do it wrong
If I miss the deadline, then you can call me up asking how long I'm going to be. Not before.
You give me till 2pm to do it, you don't fucking tell me off for being late until after 2pm
On a plus side I did get my toes wet in CentOS yesterday and I liked it, so that was a positive
I should really go back to Joel Spolsky and beg him for another job at FC. The work I did do for them (on contract) was fun
@MarkHenderson You could get a Visa under them STEM visa act to move here FYI.
@Jacob I can get an E3 visa, but only once I have sponsored work
@MarkHenderson Are you looking to move to the US?
@MarkHenderson do you really wanna work here? Isn't it easier to take contract work?
@Jacob Not any more
@voretaq7 Hells yeah contract work
Since I found out how fucking cold NY is I don't think I'd like it there too much
I would love to just do contract work, or remote work, and come to NY every few months for in-person catchup
23:01
@MarkHenderson What about the rest of the US :P
@Jacob why would he want to live in the sticks?
:P
@Jacob I have no desire to really live anywhere else
@voretaq7 8c - interestingly it's about that temperature here at the moment too
But this is unseasonably cold
This is about normal for us
next week we'll probably be in the 50s (9-10c)
@voretaq7 Max or Min?
min
max probably... 14-15ish c?
23:03
I can deal with that as a min
won't go much above 60F for at least another 3 weeks
at least not consistently
23:25
Can't wait till it's in the 60's
"“We’re in the business of delivering what consumers want, and to stay a little ahead of what we think they will want…. We just don’t see the need of delivering that to consumers,” she said, referring to gigabit-speed internet connections. "
says Time Warner
@MDMarra I can't find any documentation to back that up. On the contrary - I find lots of documentation about improvements for DFS-R in 2012, especially on the resilience part..
@David fwiw there aren't that many people who want or need gigabit connections
@MarkHenderson well yeah
Most internet users are your dumbass neighbour who can't figure out how to connect to his wifi
23:29
except me!
Which is why people like us need to find specialist providers
@David Yeah it's all well and good to complain that you can't get gigabit speeds - spare a thought for the rest of the world who can't even get 10Mbps
@David Yeah, I'd kill that person for a gig speed.
"Oh no" said the billionaire "Ferrari are telling me they can't sell me an F150! I have to get a 599 instead. Woe me to me!"
23:36
@mdmarra ah, I see now.. yep - it does not recover the jet database automatically. There is a hotfix for 2008 R2 SP1 that makes it behave the same. I hope you're aware that this is a very narrow scenario with hub-and-spoke deployments..
So... exactly what remote site can saturate your gigabit pipe?
(I'm just sayin' is all...)
@voretaq7 Mine.
@voretaq7 usenet
@Jacob really?
@voretaq7 Yerp.
23:39
@voretaq7 Have you seen the porn that guy watches?
2
Show me please your 10Gig connection pumping out an actual gigabit per second of (useful) traffic :)
There's a lot of it, and it's all high def, and every time I close my eyes I see it
@David nnnot these days :-P
@voretaq7 why not
@David I can't even max out 100Mbps with Usenet
23:39
@David is alt.binaries still that big?
I get about 80 on a good day
i have no idea the limits of usenet, but my connection gets maxed when i do DLs
@voretaq7 I don't have a 1gb link at home.
oh I'm sure usenet has the POTENTIAL to do that
@MarkHenderson I've maxxed out a 300 link on Usenet.
23:40
@Jacob I'd settle for results between two machines connected by crossover cable
i dont actually browse it like that, @voretaq7
but it has to be USEFUL traffic
i just search and DL
(i.e. "not just a stream of NULLs")
or have it automated
23:40
@voretaq7 Games, movies, ect ect.
@David if you're not actually running a NNTP server I doubt you're pulling any kind of serious bandwidth
I'd be interested what Google's NNTP cluster does in a day
@voretaq7 no clue what that means
i pay SuperNews $10/mo and have an indexer i search
@David NNTP (Network News Transfer Protocol) is "usenet"
pull 3.2MB/s (maxxing my connection) all the time
today there's usually a HTTP front end sitting on top of it
@Jacob OK, so do you have a 1Gb/Sec pipe from your disk?
23:42
@voretaq7 That's what load balancing/RAID is for.
@Jacob I'm just saying it's REALLY HARD to produce 1Gb/sec of real, useful traffic
unless you have a LOT of servers, feeding a LOT of clients (in which case it's 1Gb aggregate - each client may only be demanding a few Mb)
my 30/30 connection is tough to saturate most days
I usually only manage it when torrenting
@voretaq7 torrents are dead to me
usenet is so much better
@voretaq7 The only time we were able to consistantly produce 1Gb/sec of traffic was two VM's in fault tolerant mode, in lockstep, on a 10Gbps link
And that was sending every single CPU instruction over the link
@MarkHenderson that's one of the few cases I can think of for it
(file copies/backups/etc excluded)
23:45
and that's point-to-point too I assume - you wouldn't DARE try that over WAN unless you had dark fiber
@voretaq7 Fuck no
In the same blade chassis
(we had trouble with VMWare HA on a NY-to-TX point-to-point link)
@voretaq7 SAN replication for the HA?
I was told by Evan Anderson to avoid VMWare's FT mode and I understand why. So many restrictions, so many requirements, such poor performance and so expensive
But there's nothing like being able to take a program last modified in 1994 and literally yank the blade chassis out and have it keep running
i'm outta here, see ya'll tomorrow
PEACE
23:50
@MarkHenderson yeah, we didn't use their DRS/HA thing because it was way too new (and I wouldn't today for the reasons you just mentioned)
but the SAN replication kept choking because the "point-to-point" link wasn't. It was some lame ass Verizon virtual point to point with all kinds of "interesting" latency problems
We have a HP PSA that replicates over ADSL, it works OK
Slow, but works
Long term plan is to use Site Recovery Manager
At the moment we'll settle for replication and manual DR rebuild
@MarkHenderson ours worked, but we had all sorts of corruption issues in the failover tests
in the end we wound up just setting up two systems, with two independent SANs, and using NeverFail and other crap on the VMs.
That was almost 5 years ago though - SAN replication technology has surely improved to a point of lower suck by now...
@voretaq7 Don't be too sure ;)
I think the Equallogic one is better than the PSA one, btu I never got to set it up
It sounded better on paper
23:57
Virtual Hepburn shilling for chocolate companies now
(Real Hepburn spinning in her grave so fast she's powering a good chunk of the midwest)
we had fine cheap expensive EMC SANs
(I forget which line but they were plain SCSI)
