LAMP stack
@ewwhite what's the address - did you look at it with FF or chrome developer tools ?
@ewwhite I think we found the problem.
Any sort of CMS?
"For example, hitting <the new server> on the new server take 3.5 seconds to load and mysql's cpu usage hits 90+% the entire time. The old server at 10.1.1.35/admin/inventorypanel.php takes on average .03 seconds and CPU usage never crosses 10%. Memory isn't a problem as swap is never touched on either system."
The old server's specs
cat /proc/cpuinfo
      model name
: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz
      cache size
: 1024 KB
      free -m
      Ram Total: 486
      Ram Used: 438
      Swap Total: 500
New server:
[root@qc ~]# cat /proc/cpuinfo
processor       : 0
vendor_id       : GenuineIntel
cpu family      : 6
model           : 44
model name      : Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU           X5660  @ 2.80GHz
stepping        : 2
cpu MHz         : 2799.204
cache size      : 12288 KB
(it's a VM)
@ewwhite it's slow then - so you need to find out why - first thing is to load the page using FF/Chrome developer tools and look at the net timings
14:04
@HopelessN00b I dunno how the protection mechanism works
@Iain how do I get the timing?
@ewwhite chrome ->tools->developer tools then look at Network
@ewwhite hover over the inventortypanel.php to get more info
3.5 seconds in "receiving"
14:10
so that's inventorypanel.php doing ?
I looked at the old server and see...

Q: Configure SSL on Apache

AliI have a dedicated server (centOS5.9) and I have different accounts on it. I am running tomcat under apache 5.5 server. I have installed Servlet support and updated /usr/local/apache/conf/userdata/std/2/acountName/domainname.com/cp_jkmount.conf to add servlet Names for the website to use those s...

NEED MOAR COFFEE
@Iain the amount of content is smaller...
compression, maybe?
@ewwhite possibly - it looks like the problem is with the whatever that php file is doing
14:14
is it using the same MySQL as the old server? Or a local one?
local
same configuration? no missing indexes/query cache?
it looks like it's just compression in the PHP
for 3s? weird
zlib.output_compression = Off
14:18
@ewwhite how fast is the lan it's attached to ? is it a piece of string someone forgot to piss on ?
GigE.
enabling compression made the content size smaller...
@ewwhite It's not going to be just the size of the data then ?
but it still takes 3 sec.
@ewwhite it will most likely be something to do with the way the php is accessing the data
@Iain any tips?
Client: "The delay is all in sql server. Apache and php barely move the needle while the page is loading. I'll look into mysql cache settings and see if I've missed something. Thanks."
14:28
@ewwhite missing indexes, query cache, if mysql: innob/myisam buffer pool sizes
[mysqld]
datadir=/var/lib/mysql
socket=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock
user=mysql
# Disabling symbolic-links is recommended to prevent assorted security risks
symbolic-links=0
I just added some query cache parameters..
and it's a lot faster
© Page generated in 0.1631 seconds.
@ewwhite yeah sorry - what @faker said earlier and what @DennisKaarsemaker said
@ewwhite if that's your entire my.cnf, time to do some tuning
@DennisKaarsemaker ta da!!
[mysqld]
datadir=/var/lib/mysql
socket=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock
user=mysql
# Disabling symbolic-links is recommended to prevent assorted security risks
symbolic-links=0
query_cache_type=1
query_cache_limit=1M
query_cache_size=32M

[mysqld_safe]
log-error=/var/log/mysqld.log
pid-file=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid
query_cache is a workaround, not tuning.
14:33
That's some fine DevOpsing right there.
is it myisam or innodb?
@jscott the client's son just wrote "Poor PHP and poor SQL queries can all be fixed by fast hardware and smart configuration."
7
@ewwhite that's DevOPs
wow...
that's not DevOps, that's NoOps
14:35
@ewwhite Better ask Daddy for a C7000 and fully tricked out blades.
Hey, I'm here to learn. I know NOTHING about databases.
Databases are fun
I likes hardware more.
My pages fault mean Pages doesn't work. A server response time rapidly grow from 0.2 to 3 seconds and loading page from 6s to 16 seconds. A question is how configure apache2.conf for my dedicated server. — EliaszKubala 5 hours ago
@ewwhite I guess there's some truth in that statement. It just depends on your definition of "can all be fixed".
14:37
Something is terribly wrong with that server...
one mysql misconfiguration -> 50% capacity loss
@DennisKaarsemaker But over 400% performance improvement! ;)
@jscott the DB is 129MB.
@ewwhite RAMDISK
DEVOPS
@ewwhite That's not a very big database, there's a guy here with one 100x that on his phone.

14:38
@MDMarra Only if I can find some way to mirror the RAMDISK to a physical drive or SSD...
Would DRBD work?
Did you guys catch the HN article about how living social is broke and how they took a cash infusion that made all of their employee's stock completely worthless?
1
Q: RAM disk and physical RAID

quamisI need to create a lot of temporary files for which I need to have fast access, so I'm thinking about using a RAM disk. The problem is that the temporary files might get pretty big (1-4 GB) and in this case the disk-storage would be OK. Is there any way to create a mix between a RAM disk and a p...

@ewwhite Just use Gluster and do it across two machines
DEVOPS
@ewwhite --^
haha
@ewwhite I think you could create a mirror between a ramdisk device and a physical disk... Use the option where once it's written to one of the mediums the write call returns... I can't remember what all that's called in Linux, but I know it's there.
@ChrisS unionfs ?
@MDMarra Whoops.
the async DRBD option?
@jscott Yep, all founder stock and employee stock is worthless. They owe like 400 mil and only have 78 mil on hand. Apparently they did all of that for 110 mil, which (to my untrained eye) seems like not enough
14:43
@Iain I'm too lazy to read up on LVM enough to say it intelligently... =]
What's LivingSocial?? I don't think I've heard of it before today.
@MDMarra "Needless to say, there will not be a LivingSocial IPO" -- hahahahahahaha
haha
@ChrisS Like GroupOn I think I hear it on the radio frequently.
@ChrisS groupon, amazon local, google deals
all the same shit
"deal of the day" type stuff
their thing was if you shared an affiliate link and got three other people to buy, yours was free
I've gotten some cheap meals off of it
How do you get $400M down without warning bells going off?
14:45
I'd not heard if it before @MDMarra mentioned it
One time I got a three course dinner for 2 at a really nice resturaunt for $50 from there
Would have easily been $150+
So a client is upset that her web form is being cut off by the webpage fold.

Only response i can think of.
Isn't GroupOn discussing bankruptcy too?
"Sam,
The opt-in box position will be determined by the resolution of the device being used.

*** is obviously browsing your website with a toaster.

Thank you,
@ChrisS Yeah, I think their debt to equity ratio is much worse than living social
They just have more cash on hand to keep limping on
14:46
Living Social is bleeding $400 Million per year... WTF is a $110 MM "infusion" going to do?
did you read all of the conditions too?
They get first crack in bankrupcy court at 4x investment value
jeez $400 mil! how do they get that much investment to even start of with
and in the event of a rebound, founder and employee stock is worthless
@ColdT They raised 900+ mil in VC during funding
@MDMarra So what's the incentive for any employees to stay there? I just don't understand these things.
Hell, Stack Exchange for like 160 mil of VC and they only did a single round of funding
14:48
@MDMarra I thought they'd done 2
@jscott a paycheck probably, since they're likely still making payroll with 78m in the bank
@Iain ah maybe
I thought they only had a single investor. Could have changed though
@Iain I believe it was 2. Which is an extremely common number
1st round is "does this idea work at all/make sense". 2nd round is the "real" money.
@ChrisS that answers my next question

Q: Is there a way to tell a device name (computer name) which connects to the internet jack from a wall without accessing the switch to find out?

BuzzySorry, i'm not familiar with networking. Ive been trying to search for info online and from what i have found, there's no possible way to find out the particular physical port of a switch that a computer is connected to w/o accessing the switch? Am i getting my facts right? Thanks! :)

does anyone understand that question?
15:02
i think what he wants is the port the computer is connected to on the switch like gi1/0/1
@MDMarra Well, both of the answers are mostly right
I didn't bother reading the answers since I didn't even understand the question
Dedicated server with 32 GB RAM and quad-core 3.4Ghz CPU and RAID 1 120GB SSDs for £60/month? I call shennanigans.

15:09
@ewwhite That's like how poorly functioning users can all be fixed with fast metal and an understanding ballistics, right?
@tombull89 Yikes.
@tombull89 possible, my customer rents a dedicated server with 32GB RAM, i7 3.2Ghz and RAID1 2*3TB for 60EUR/month
I struggle to see i7s as server chipsets.
Just dropped like 3 large books on my chest. Ouch
that is one reason why it's so cheap. I wouldn't recommend renting with them at all.
no hardware RAID, no out of band management, only 100Mbit/s connections, not a lot of traffic included...
15:26
@faker Cheap for basic use, yeah, I see as soon as you want "a bit more" it gets expensive quick.
Finding a host sounds a lot like fishing. Nibbles don't cost much, but as soon as you go to eat, you get your face impaled on a metal hook.
@HopelessN00b Yes, quite. "Hmm, nice. Next, Next, Next, Confirm, View Bask-waitwhatohshi-. nopenopenope."
@HopelessN00b That's a large part of how I ended up where I am. Straight forward pricing for all small and medium colo needs; most of their pricing policy is on their website; no surprises.. I probably could have saved $2/mo going somewhere else, but I know what I'm getting into here.
15:44
@MDMarra yes
Post got submitted to news.ycombinator.com if anyone wants to contribute to my voting ring ;-)
Next post will have the technical details (The stuff that actually interests sysadmins)
@KyleBrandt We are doing a large scale move of all of our customers from 32 AoA to our new wholesale data center space in Piscataway, NJ.
and selected moves of some clients out of Equinix in Secaucus to the new space.
Manhatten space is a bit crazy in a way, but it can be nice to be close to the facility
So take what Stack Exchange did and multiply it by 30 ;)
15:53
@KyleBrandt Hacker News hates SE though :(
@MDMarra Really? See lots of stackoverflow content on there
Some moves involve parallel setups or spanning networks... others, like my Hardcore Pawn customer, mean driving systems 30 miles under the cover of night....
Also, where's the SQL Server 2012 Always-On blog?!
@KyleBrandt There was a long comment thread about a post one of the mods had closed because it was off topic
It was a while ago though
Hmm.. I had a post get traction that just got vanished
Must have been moded
Conspiracy!
So what ever happened to the SQL 2012 failover post? I'm curious, man! You guys that the biggest always-on install on the planet right?
15:55
There's a link at 25 to the blog, submitted by a guy called revorad...?
Ya, not sure who that was, but that is the post
Ah, they have a pretty strict one URL only no repost rule
It's been a very depressing week on HN
No more than usual, from my perspective anyway
If you submit it, and someone else already has, it converts to an upvote I think
15:57
Except that PG took it down for a day with some devops-style direct DB editing
:)
Change Control meeting, had to fight sleep in that one.
just wanted to flag serverfault.com/questions/481146 for migration over to askubuntu.com, but couldn't select it.
@Roman You can flag it as "other" and type in "I think this belongs on Ask Ubuntu"
It's probably better than asking in chat, since I don't think and mods are active in here right now
MDMarra: thanks, and woops. Already flagged it as off-topic, but without a flag comment (wasn't possible). However, i commented directly on the question accordingly.
okie dokie
I'm sure it'll get seen by a mod then
16:07
Yup.
MySQL 5.5 on RHEL 6?
what do you y'all recommend for Repos to satisfy DevOps folks.
recommend what?
type of repo?
@ewwhite I have a repo company I use when DevOPS guys start bugging me. They come in, repo the DevOPS machines and handle the irate calls so I get some peace and quiet. Don't think they have offices near you, though.
@HopelessN00b Seriously, what additional repo's do you use?
Sowwy, that little joke's the only insight I have into your question. Typically, I'm in the position of, "we're using this, find a way to deal with it."
16:13
@ewwhite I think @TomO'Connor is the only real devops engineer that hangs out in here, but he's an Ubuntu guy if I'm not mistaken
And I assume you're looking for RHEL repos
Client wants Ubuntu. We don't support it.
Trying to find out what's missing in RHEL.
That's a tough stance to take for a cloud provider
Ubuntu is the devops hotness
@MDMarra I am an ubuntu guy, mostly.
they want the newer MySQL and PHP
Hmm. Does anyone have any insight into what performance counters (beyond the obvious) to look at to try to explain a growing mail queue and slow mail processing on an Exchange 2003 server? Or should that be a Q on the main?
16:15
@ewwhite for RHEL? how bout EPEL?
Mail is such a headache.
Package Repos seem almost anti-DevOps... Don't they compile everything from source, or release butterflies or something?
for ubuntu, try the PPAs
@ChrisS Unicorns
@HopelessN00b network/bytes per second. ram/% committed bytes. ram/pagefile something or other (page faults I think). CPU/%usage
16:16
@HopelessN00b i suppose you already checked your disk subsys for any degraded performance metrics.
That's OLD..
@MDMarra Already checked, look fine really fine.
@HopelessN00b check your AV too, that it's configured to the vendor's best practice for an exchange box
@ChrisS lol hadn't seen that one.
16:17
@Roman Yup. On a SAN, which is barely under load.
@MDMarra No AV on this server.
@HopelessN00b ಠ_ಠ
@MDMarra Not my call. Trying to ditch this creaking old box for Exchange 2010 anyhow. It just won't go down without a fight, and the users still on EX2003 won't shut the crap up about mail being slow.
O_O
@HopelessN00b if you have a mail gateway in front of your mail server, something might have slowed down there, and your server is just holding back.
@Roman Well, the problem is with internal-to-internal emails, and interactions (not in cached mode) from the Outlook clients. Seems unlikely that our <shudder> [cloud-based] mail filter would be causing issues.
(In that it's bypassed for local interactions and internal emails.)
16:22
@TomO'Connor I use EPEL... but hmm...
I bloody hate effing email.
I like e-mail =]

Q: How to set a custom website name instead of ip address for local computer?

azadI can point a url to a directory on my computer by setting /etc/host and /private/etc/apache2/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf files. For instance, when i type sample-app.com on my computer, website under /Users/azad/works/sample-app.com folder is running. When someone enter sample-app.com on another com...

hey guys
What happens when a conversation gets moved to a chat? does the other user get a notification about this?
@NickM. It shows up as a comment on their question, right?
16:31
yeah
so then yeah, they'll get a notification like any other comment
and then when I clicked on it it opened a chat discussion and pasted the whole convo into it
kk awesome thanks
Woohoo, it's RPC latency. So now I just need to figure out how to disable RPC latency. I really wish there was a checkbox for that.
Just got an email for a Desktop Support Engineer -_-
Just got an email about $choice[0]. "Got some good feedback… lets chat tonight"
What does that even mean!
Is there an offer? Is there not?
I hate recruiters
2
16:44
It means what he intended it to mean; nothing
He already "got feedback" yesterday though
After this morning's PCI nonsense, I'm really looking forward to leaving here
the worlds biggest datacenter is now in my backyard apparently
@MDMarra Did I miss something?
Feel like I did too @ChrisS
Granted PCI makes me want to slit my wrists.
funny thing is when i do a traceroute to it it goes 5 hours away before it returns back
16:47
but we have PCI, FDA, multiple ISO certs, etc here.
No PCI here. Plenty of other specs however. HIPAA =/
@Iain Did we lose the Merge User button??
@ChrisS yep - all merges to go through the team now - something t do with privacy issues
WTF? >=[
@MDMarra lordy
@MDMarra @KyleBrandt news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4643892 I think
16:56
StackExchange with its almost nazi-like moderation forces no discussion, resulting in very biased answers which favour those with a not necessarily well deserved or earned reputation.
Like me!
@ChrisS "One less thing for us to have to do" is how I look at it. (also "about 1000 more half-registered duplicate user accounts because people are stupid", but hey - it's not my database :P)
@ChrisS boss asked me to shut down a server to pass a scan
@MDMarra That's perfectly legit
@MDMarra oh, psssh... try to find a job where someone doesn't cut corners...
of course if you turn the server back on after the scan you're no longer in compliance
16:58
@ewwhite this is the 2nd or 3rd time though
@voretaq7 One more pieces of red tape... Where's the Flag for Community Team button then??
@MDMarra par for the course!
@ewwhite I locked the question with a historical lock ages before this happened but I didn't at the time realise that historical locks were timed - 1 hour,1 week, permanent so when I relocked it in response to a flag they got a bit huffy and leapt to conclusions and the rest is in the past
@Iain you've made the news!
:)
17:02
@ChrisS Per moderator.stackexchange.com the user needs to initiate it via the "contact us" link in the footer (or we have to email community@)
While I do enjoy reading HN, it's not a polished platform. It was started as a side project for PG and it's regularly down, yet a lot of users there seem to think anything not in their specific format is awful even though their format is a clear rip on reddit
Definitely good content there with lots of bright people, but still a circlejerk like any other online community
@voretaq7 That was rhetorical. I'm just not going to do anything about it. If they want to make it difficult, I'm not going to jump through the hoops. I've got better things to do with my time.
@ChrisS but... but we spent so much time dousing the hoops in gasoline and setting them on fire!
I use my shitty apple keyboard as a USB port duplicator

@JoelESalas that is shitty

RomanPutting a DC into a VM is okay, but only as long as you've got another DC as a physical server. If you don't, sooner or later you'll run into problems. Only do it if you're aware of all implications, which are manifold (Personally, for me, it's just not worth the effort). The same applies to put...

So many crap answers
@NickM. Blimey. She looks like she should be laying across a SAN disk shelf, trying to sell it at an IT trade show.
17:24
its the curves
@FairPoint is announcing 1 out of every 400 prefixes on the Internet. See AS13977, AS13672. #BreakingTheInternet
@TomO'Connor if that was the case.. i think a lot of IT professionals would end up buying stuff they had no idea about
@ewwhite belkin.com/us/thunderbolt I want it I want it
It's a thing.
@JoelESalas Belkin.

@TomO'Connor Even as a straight man, I hate the women being used to sell shit thing
I mean, a pretty face on a poster is one thing - but half naked ladies at a trade show, grow up
@Dan I went to a big data thing in london in october
there was some woman with huge knockers talking about oracle big data
@JoelESalas I would want it if it had a third TB port, but with only two, still need to plug one of the monitors into the laptop itself
@TomO'Connor SHOW US YOUR TERABYTES

@TomO'Connor Yeah, I've got the photo

so i asked her some pointed questions about how oracle handle non-alphanumeric big data

@TomO'Connor Poor
17:30
And people wonder why there's no women in tech
@TomO'Connor The reason is simple: Every chance we get, we tell them "You are not welcome"
@JoelESalas or try and get them to sell SANs
@TomO'Connor Maybe if I buy their SAN, I can get a date!
@JeffFerland HOORAY SYSTEMS BUILT ON MUTUAL TRUST AND COOPERATION!
@troutman Has @FairPoint ever done anything notably intelligent? "Ooh, he got a CCNA. Only candidate willing to work for $40k. Hired!"
17:33
@JoelESalas The reason is tech companies (and to a lesser extent, the people responsible for purchasing and hiring decisions) treat them like window dressing.
@voretaq7 My only question is: Does it even fucking work?
Case in point: If @TomO'Connor's Oracle Sales Bimbo had actually been an Oracle DBA and capable of intelligently answering his questions... well she wouldn't have been a bimbo.
@voretaq7 I'm sick of your slut-bashing!
@JoelESalas AbsoFUCKINGlutely. Show the average straight man a pair of tits and he'll throw money at them.
@voretaq7 Bimbo is a brand of spanish bread. :P
17:34
@TomO'Connor yes it is
That fucking bear man
when it came up here they spent a HUGE amount of marketing dollars to educate people that it's pronounced BEEEEEM-bo
Problem: People associate "bimbo" with loose women. Solution: Give bear tits.
(I think they should have just changed the bear to a Marilyn Monroe lookalike and sold it as "Bimbo Bread" - in this country that's more likely to generate sales.)
@voretaq7 bearmind

@KyleBrandt I can't believe what my sore eyes are seeing... Is this really a new blog post or just a Fata Morgana?
We gave been a bit busy :-P
@KyleBrandt no you haven't - I don't see french braids in any of your cabling!
dammit. It's not even been a week since I broke up with my gf and im craving song loving
I just saw the new blog post about moving locations:

I want to leave a comment, but I don't see a way to do that.
What am I missing?
@voretaq7 this would be to save on the money for cable-ties?
17:39
@JayBazuzi Should be at the bottom, uses Disqus
how many servers does stackexchange have
@JayBazuzi you have not scrolled down the page far enough?
@NickM. All of them.
@NickM. 35-40ish at the main facility
Ahh, I think Ghostery was suppressing it.
17:40
@NickM. Except for chat, which runs on a Presario under George's desk.
@syneticon-dj It would be to make the next person who has to service the rack kill themselves.
but it would LOOK fucking awesome :-)
@voretaq7 just as cable ties, right then
(except for the look)
Not many for 4.3 million people a day really ( quantcast.com/p-c1rF4kxgLUzNc )
@ScottPack a presario ? for real?
17:42
@NickM. I thought it was an Optiplex
@NickM. An M2000 if I remember right.
Can anyone tell me if I'm drunk or is this a shopping question...being answered...
@Alex where
@NickM Where what?
what ever you guys do.. Do not go to google images and type in Victoria Moore in the search
DO NOT
17:48
@NickM. ... /grabs phone
@Alex Ed answers everything
/me enables private browsing
Doesn't mean you can't still vote to close it
@JoelESalas Nice. I like.
Im trying to change my ways
17:50
@NickM. What terrible thing am I supposed to be seeing?
@MDMarra I did vote it to close, but I'm just curious. Am I not understanding what shopping questions are?
That one's not really cut and dry, though I do think it's too subjective
All my life ive been drawn to brunettes and because of that I've never dated a blonde. Can anyone recommend a blonde for me
The recruiter for my #1 job choice told me I'd be receiving an offer!
@ScottPack nothing.. I just knew if I wrote it like that that none would be able to resist the temptation to actually type it in
17:51
@MDMarra Congrats!
@NickM. Fair enough.
@Alex It's not subjective.
It's asking for a comparison...
and experience.
It sounded like their high end was my low end requirement. I told him to make sure it was an easy decision for me and don't bring back a low offer
no rush but when you all get a chance.. names of some hot blondes please
I shared an experience deploying a lot of Barracuda units.
@MDMarra your recruiter is an amateur.
Yep, he is
but this is a job that I'm very interested in
So I put up with him
Also, the guys there were ripping on him a little during the interview...he gave me the wrong address after all
17:53
If dealing with a recruiter, that recruiter can go in and say, "this is the fucking salary range..." and buffer you entirely from salary negotiation.
@ewwhite I gave him the range I'd make a move for and said to go get it
And if it was lower, it wasn't worth making a move for
So we'll see what he does
the range should be understood before you even step foot in the door.
Oh, it was
so if an offer is coming in lower...
He was mostly just calling to say "They want to make an offer. Are you interested enough here to consider one" Then he somehow rehashed the same salary discussion we had two weeks ago
He's definitely not the brightest
