Didn't someone point this out ages ago? From the Procurve switch info page if you click on 'Modules' it wants to sell you ink and toner… FFS.
hahaha
@MikeyB Yeah, it's been broke for at least a month.
HP's website is a live case study in how NOT to design a tech company's website.
@ChrisS You mean you don't like www-329.whatever-i-don't-know.hp.com?
Cisco's website is a live psychiatric test, seeing how long people will look for information that they know is somewhere on the site, before they go crazy.
@JeffFerland That's just ugly... But when I click on ProCurve Modules it should 1. Bring me to the correct page 2. Do so QUICKLY. As if you're SERVER and NETWORKING hardware was capable of running ONE website.
@JeffFerland IBM does that too
Also, equally impossible to find useful info on ibm.com
17:05
@MDMarra "We have 100,000 employees, and not one is a web designer."
3
@MDMarra Here's the trick to getting to drivers & support on IBM's website: ibm.com/storage/support ibm.com/systems/support And don't ever go to ibm.com.
I'll probably learn what that's like soon. I think I'm going to be acquired by $BIGCORP
@JeffFerland It's not so bad. Maintenance windows are interesting
Everyone chimes in with whether or not the window is ok for them. RED 5 STANDING BY
@JoelESalas I'm afraid they'll take away my GMail and free catered lunches.
@MikeyB shibboleet
17:07
@MDMarra Exactly - I have all the shibboleet links ;)
@JeffFerland You can't own people man!
@voretaq7 Stock options are indentured servitude.
(though in some places you can rent them)
stupid question for you. What is the typical depth of a rackmount cabinet or open frame 4 post rackmount?
@NickM. stupid answer for you: "Big enough to hold whatever you're cramming into it"
(I've seen racks ranging from 24-44" deep - that's why rails slide :)
17:12
@voretaq7 That's what she said.
@voretaq7 yeah ive seen to many.. but what is a typical safe size if you are going to rack full sized servers?
Do prospective employers (ones you'd want to work for) see contract work as a pro or a con on your resume?
@NickM. Generally the servers themselves will recommend a size
@NickM. the "safe" size is the biggest one you can find
but figure how big your servers are and go one size up from the smallest that will hold them
@voretaq7 thanks
@NickM. most 4-post racks are adjustable size
(in fact most enclosed racks are internally adjustable too up until you put the exterior panels on)
17:16
perfect
like the APC 4-post here - the front and rear posts are braced to the floor plates, but the arms that hold them together have a slot and screw arrangement. (No comments from the peanut gallery, @ScottPack!)
@NickM. A "typical" depth (post-to-post) that I'd feel comfortable with would be 30".
@voretaq7 yeah thats like my rack except it came with the colocation so i never needed to price one up
@MikeyB as long as the doors aren't right on the posts I'd be OK with that
@voretaq7 Exactly - 30" rail depth (?), room at the front & back for cables & such.

Q: 3ware raid controller, unit unusable, several degraded disks

user155563I was switching the disk drives in my server, running RAID 6 on 5 disks on a 3ware 9650SE controller, for newer disks and have run into a problem. The two first disks went fine, I took out one disk and inserted a new one, let the array rebuild and repeated for disk 2. When booting after switching...

cunt
2
hahaha great minds...
but yeah, great work by OP
most 1U servers are somewhere between 20 and 24 inches deep I think (at least Dell and SuperMicro are)
@voretaq7 Seems shallow
I'm also work from home today, so I have absolutely nothing here to measure
2
17:21
@MDMarra So does your mom.
Tried Amazon FBA for the first time, had some adapters that we wanted to get rid of and couldn't return... Shipped them in to Amazon, then they ship to customers when sold. Well sent 5 in; Amazon hasn't "received" 1 of them yet, it's been 2 weeks. A customer purchased another, then returned it damaged. Now I get to pay for Amazon to ship the destroyed item back to me to see if it's salvageable. WTF??
@ChrisS You're getting the best of outsourcing, I see.
@MDMarra might be a few inches off - I've never actually measured them and I do have kinda big feet...
@voretaq7 You know what they say about big feet....
the one in the back of my office is 23 and change long
17:23
More bang for the buck when you have to buy shoes, since it takes more overall material than a shoe of a smaller size!
@MDMarra yeah - you have to wear big shoes :-/
@MikeyB I certainly wont be using FBA ever again... Also, a customer somehow used a "Rebate" that I didn't offer, so they got $8.50 off the adapter..... WTFH.
@MDMarra they charge more for them now. Shoemakers caught on.
really?
do you have shaq feet or something?
@ChrisS Dude. Amazon SUCKS.
@MDMarra 11.5 or 12 E/EE depending on the shoe company
17:25
@NickM. Wasn't there a RACK question some time ago?
as soon as you go above a 10 there's like a $5-10 price increase - unless you're talking designer shoes which are so exorbitantly overpriced that they can eat the loss :P
@ewwhite similar In the past I had asked how long a full sized server typically was
@voretaq7 I really just expected something a bit more reasonable...
@ChrisS no dude. Amazon SUCKS.
You're getting the better end of the deal
Apparently the "Customer damaged" is that they didn't return the box...
I'm usually the buyer on Amazon... It's been pretty good on the whole.
17:26
I know some folks who did "Amazon Fulfillment"
@NickM. Depends... but something like an APC rack will fit anything
it was great for the first year, then Amazon realized "Hey, we can make money on this product line!" - they bought from the same suppliers and sold for like $5 less. Dirty Pool!
@voretaq7 Meh, that's good for commerce... I can sympathize with the middle-man, but I still don't care.
I'm mad that Amazon let a customer barrow something, make it unsalable, and I'm stuck paying shipping both ways on it; and it's apparently "unsalable" now.
@ChrisS yeah that's pretty fucked up.
@ChrisS My problem with it is Amazon was a contractor and they deliberately stabbed the guys that built the business in the back. (Then again it's their own fault for trusting Amazon)
17:44
Are you really trying to run OpenVZ inside a VMware virtual machine? — Michael Hampton 6 secs ago
@MichaelHampton :(((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((
@pauska I found a better way to ask my question from the other day :)

Q: Minimun Reqyuirements for a Web Server

whendyWhat are the minimun recommendable requirements for a web server, that run into a medium size LAN, and run about 20 web applications, whit about 15 users each one?

---> Will be running and hiding
@pauska Is it shear irony that I rewatched the whole season of Firefly over Christmas :)
@Diago that's normal.
18:00
@voretaq7 I was testing out Netflix and it was about the only thing I could find to watch on short notice. Sadly.
hey everybody! Bart's hawking sex toys!
ONLY 18 LEFT IN STOCK http://www.amazon.com/Compact-Impact-Banana-Bunker-Color/dp/B000VY86UG/ref=pd_sim_sbs_gro_3
I really wish someone would give me a surface
They seem really cool, but with a super low bang-for-your-buck
Fisher-Price.
@MDMarra IDK I wasn't really thrilled with them
18:11
@MDMarra Yeah, I say that's accurate
I played with one in a store for a bit
maybe it's because Microsoft didn't have any good apps on the ones in the store
it was an interesting experience
I think it's a good product
But $700+ when you factor in a keyboard cover and all that is nuts
no one in their right mind would get it without the cover
18:12
I didn't like the keyboard cover honestly
I though it was better designed than the iPad smart cover
did you use the clicky one or the flat one?
@MDMarra We bought, but then returned, a Lenovo convertible tablet w/ Win8... it was almost good enough to keep.
but the keyboard functionality was lacking
the flat - maybe that was the problem?
The flat keyboard is crap.
I used both but (obviously) preferred the one with real keys and a real trackpad
18:13
The "normal" one is not bad, better than on the lenovo
they didn't have any clicky ones on display
Ah
Office Max near me did the other day
maybe I'll ask next time I'm in the area
Not clicky, but with real keys with some travel.
The woman went in for translucent paper to print wedding things on and I ended up spending 20 minutes playing with the surface
18:14
I also didn't ask how the keyboard connects
it snaps in
It gets power from the main unit though right?
sort of like a really long dock connector thing on the long side
Magnets
yeah
18:14
40gbps esx cluster is now live. fuck yes.
@Ward FUCKING MAGNETS!
@MDMarra that's all that matters to me really
@Ward how the fuck do they work?
like I can get a bluetooth keyboard for my iPad but seriously - another goddamn fucking battery?!
Keyboard with an ipad is infuriating
Too bad these guys don't make a wireless model:
18:15
I love my ipad, but it clearly wasnt designed for use with a keyboard
The surface pro is supposed to be out soon... with Win8 pro instead of just RT
Ya, and 5 hr battery, right?
pass
Apps that are full-screen only are a big fuckup with Win8... they're useless
Anyone here ever done Fencing?
@MDMarra sometimes I use my iPad to write emails and stuff, and the on-screen keyboard SUCKS for that because it eats up half the screen.
@David the sport, or the construction activity?
18:16
@David not recently, got a buddy who's into it
Good exercise
@voretaq7 sport
i have a class in it and need to buy our own foil
@MDMarra What, they keyboard? There's a sorta dangly-bit that fits into the slot and magnets hold it in place.
2
@David get a broad sword instead
don't star that!
@MDMarra lol, if only
18:18
Hmmm.... You know you've grown up when you realise the SU chat room is full of kids and you prefer the conversation of sys admins
Either that or your getting old.
You're getting old
:)
@Ward Yeah, dock connector was a bad example
I just meant that it physically connected to the device and didnt have its own battery
@Diago Do you have a cane to shake at kids while telling them to stay off your lawn?
@David I'm familiar with the sport, but the class I took provided the foil, guard, and pads so I'd be pretty useless in selecting one
now if you want advice on erecting a barrier to keep people off your property I'd be much more useful :-)
@freiheit Lolz. Nope. I prefer kids to play on my lawn and not in the street
18:19
@MDMarra Probably.
@Diago You aren't that old, then.
@Diago Are you still a mod on SU?
No battery in the keyboard, yeah, it has to connect to work.
@voretaq7 yeah, community college... get what you pay for lol
but didnt mention anything about blade size, guard pad, or guard
@MDMarra No. I stopped about a year ago. I was spending less and less time online, and also disagreed with the direction the mods where going with the site.
18:22
I only played with Win8 on the convertible for a few days, the big problem is that some things only work well with onscreen gestures, some only work well with mouse (or trackpad) gestures. So it adds another input mechanism to mouse+keyboard
@Diago Got ya
I had a big blowout with Molly when (s)he was the highest rep user on the site right before they deleted their account. It was really the last time I was active there
I was on the front rep page for a bit. I'd imagine I've been bumped off by now though
@MDMarra SU is extremely hard since it has a broad focus and is pretty much anything goes. SF has always been strict, SU the opposite. The original MODs tried to shape it like SF, but with no success
And based on my interaction on the site the last few days, I realise I have outgrown it
@MDMarra Just because I figure you might be the guy who'd have this... are you aware of any official MS documentation saying that GPPs are supported on a 2003-level domain? I'm being told I can't use them to fix our problems because they're not supported on a 2003 FL domain, which I'm pretty sure is BS.
@HopelessN00b UPGRADE YA DAMN N00B! :P
@HopelessN00b that is BS
I'm 99% sure at least
18:30
@HopelessN00b Just to confirm your referring to Group Policies? Of course they are supported
You can get GPP extensions for XP SP3..
@voretaq7 Yeah, getting there, slowly. It would be nice if could get a doc to say "nope, that's shit, I'm moving to GPP's, and kiss my ass."
@Diago group policy preferences
@Diago Group Policy Preferences.
@HopelessN00b Yeah bogus
You need a windows vista or 7 computer to run the group policy management console from if you don't have a 2008 or later server to do it on
but the DFL and FFL are completely irrelevant
18:32
@MDMarra negative
it runs on 2003 servers aswell
@HopelessN00b From here
@MDMarra Yeah, know of any documentation I can shove down this asshole's throat, though? That's my current roadblock/showstopper.
System requirements: Supported Operating Systems: Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 x64 Edition
(very outdated): "Supported operating systems: Windows Server 2003, Windows XP. GPMC runs on Windows XP Professional SP1 and Windows Server 2003 computers and can manage Group Policy in either Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003 domains."
@pauska You won't be able to see the GPP and newer policies though
18:33
@MDMarra oh..
A 2003 server doesn't know what to do with an admx
So you'll need to manage the policy from something newer than 2003, but the DCs themselves will happily hold copies of the policy with these newer settings that they don't actually understand
@HopelessN00b Uh, I mean
@HopelessN00b upgrade, you slob
Why would microsoft say "this is supported on a 2003 FFL" when FFL or DFL don't impact anything related to gpo
That would be like saying "It's OK to use these policies if you had tea for breakfast"
You won't find anything that says that either
@MDMarra BREAKFAST DOES NOT WORK THAT WAY
I know it doesn't help you, but a simple "it will work, let's set it up in a test lab if you don't believe me. If you disagree, you need to bring the documentation" should table that argument
err shelve that argument..whatever
18:38
Is there a way in vim to recall your last issued search and replace?
Or last command for that matter?
@Diago colon up-arrow
@ScottPack Awesome! You're my hero for the day!
:%s/Your/You're/
Lolz
wow, s/ was finally used here in the actual context of vi
how about that
18:41
@MDMarra I aim to pleasure.
I bet you do...
@Diago also see: q:
@MDMarra I actually only learnt how to use vi properly 3 years ago, since then everything I use uses some sort of vi extension to emulate it's usage
@MDMarra Yeah, I'm gonna look for a technet/msdn "setting up GPP on a 2003 domain/server." Closest thing I can think of that will actually exist, and be proof of "supported."
@MikeyB Even better
18:43
The whole having a discussion or argument thing is pretty... st00pid. "We can't fix it that way, it might not work or be supported." So, it's broken now, and we can't fix it because it might not work? Where's my fucking gun?
@HopelessN00b There's nothing different in AD between GPP and GPO... well, at least not in the way they're stored and retrieved, which is what you're talking about. The client has to be able to process GPP however, which as other have noted requires the Policy Extension Update or whatever it's called. You should be able to run GPP on a 2000 FL Domain though.
whats GPP
i know GPO
Group Policy Preference
ah
ancient technology?
It was an extension invented by some company that MS bought.. GPO just sticks new entries in the registry, and it's up to the various programs to read them and do whatever.
GPP has an "active" client that can change configurations and do "stuff".
It's not so much ancient as it is different.
Before Vista/2008 you had to install the GPP Client, it was pushed out through WU
In Vista/2008 and newer the GPP Client is built into Windows.
The Client Update was buggy as heck though. It was a half-baked product when MS bought them.
18:49
im new enough to IT that ive only really used 2008
I know some people have had really good luck with GPP in XP, but I rarely did... I still avoid GPP unless it's got some functionality that would be a real bear to implement otherwise.
It's so great in W7 and later
I don't know about "great", but it certainly works the way it's intended to.
item level targeting is wonderful
@mdmarra I just pushed the vnx above 1300MB/s..
18:54
nice
fcp or iscsi?
iSCSI
small blocks are slow as hell though, trying to figure out why

Q: Server Virtualization - Power on demand

Anyone around in .nl?
@ChrisS For Windows, if it actually works, people say "Great".
Does MEGA work yet?
i havent been able to upload a file since it launched
I was under the impression that it would not work for users inside of the US
19:06
why
uh, for the same reason that it's a new service and not an expansion of megaupload?
that whole high-profile federal case
@ChrisS Yeah, I know. I'm not the problem, the other guy is. Looks like I'm just gonna have to grin and bear it long enough to get his project on the ol' resume and parlay that into a $$$ new job.
@MDMarra i havent heard anything like that
just upload an image
Wait, you really don't know about the US gov'ts involvement in the closing of megaupload?
mega.co.nz/#!nc42yKbT this link requires me to give out the decryption key
19:08
And how they got all of kim dotcom's assets frozen (probably illegally)
mega.co.nz/… whereas this one doesnt
@MDMarra ive heard of it all, but nothing about MEGA not working in the US
look at the second last post.. holy hell
@David Oh, got ya. I don't care about mega really, so I haven't been keeping up with it but I thought that I read that recently
could very well be wrong about it though
its a better dropbox
50GB storage, encrypted, free
@MDMarra Yup. God bless government. No better way to break the law and rape the citizenry.
19:13
@HopelessN00b "Mr. Dotcom is working in consultation with top-notch NZ defense counsel on bail compliance," he said. "[He] is innocent, is presumed innocent, and is entitled to innovate and work in technology like any other innocent New Zealander especially when the US takes away all his assets and delays the extradition proceedings."
@MDMarra When the president does it it's not illegal! ::jowl flap:: AROOOOOO!
@David And how's that working out for him so far, by the way? His business is destroyed, his assets are seized, and in a few years, if he's lucky, he'll have spent millions of dollars to stay out of jail.
Not what I consider the presumption of innocence, no matter what a government spin-doctor says about it.
@HopelessN00b and he still has millions and is launching multiple new services this year
@David Oh, so it's cool because the government didn't seize all his stuff?
@HopelessN00b not really sure what you're trying to get at here
19:15
Best of all. He support Chrome fully.
howdy gents.
"The Mega business plan has been vetted by more than 20 lawyers across the US and New Zealand, Dotcom said"
“You have companies like Dropbox and Google with Drive with materially similar technologies, and they are in business and they’re thriving—and Mega adds encryption,” he said.
@David He's presumed innocent, and is considered innocent... just ignore the fact that we forcibly stole all of his assets we could place our hands on, and the onus is on him to spend spend millions of dollars to stay out of jail.
@HopelessN00b You guys are so adorable with your continued belief in basic human rights.
3
19:17
The reality of "innocent until proven guilty" when the government comes for you is nothing like what any reasonable person would interpret the phrase to mean.
@HopelessN00b He's still better-off than most
Did you become a millionaire online?
@David Only because he still has millions of dollars the government couldn't seize.
@David Oh, so the solution to avoiding abuse at the hands of the government is to become a millionaire online. Clearly, what everyone should do, instead of complaining or being outraged about government abuses. :/
@HopelessN00b im not even talking about that
irrelevant to my interests, just talkign bout MEGA, not the guy's past
we all know the gov't screwed him over, but what are you gonna do?
@David Alright. Well, when the government screws him again, we'll see how relevant this is to your interests. Because why won't it happen all over again? Worked the last time.
@HopelessN00b i'd say because its now super-high-profile
and he has more ways to protect himself now
megaupload wasnt encrypted and he ignored DMCA requests and such
now he doesnt have to bother, as he can claim to not know theres pirated/copyrighted material on his servers
19:22
@David Alright, well good luck with that.
and whoever would file a DMCA request, they dont know either
whats to stop me from putting copyrighted material on my Dropbox and sharing it with you?
other than dropbox can tell its copyrighted and take it down, whereas MEGA cant
@David Yeah, and when the servers get seized? They won't be able to decrypt whatever's on there, but that won't stop them from trying for a few [billion] years.
@HopelessN00b seized under what precedence? why not seize dropbox's servers while they're at it
@David Exactly.
@David Also not the case... they'll get the link from whatever pirate forum, file a DMCA against it, and it doesn't matter if the file can't provably be determined to be whatever.
@David It's happened plenty - take a look at the complaints against the DMCA. They've filed takedowns against printers and non-existent IPs.
Even dragged some grandmother who didn't have an internet connection into court over filesharing. The law is very one-sided. Once accused, you're basically in a position where you have to prove innocence.

Huh?
@Hennes Food Porn
So, go read livejournal (and the food porn group )
do you not have any consideration for people with problems when coming to sweet sweet foods?

@NickM. so is yelling_bird's most recent tweet
(Quite safe for work)
well there goes my diet
@Hennes ....and there go the content filter alarms!
Content filters are a wring solution. Educate people what is allowed or not. Just trying to use a technical block is not the right way
20:04
@Ward should we put that in Terrifying Nightmare monsters?
It's like a rainbow... of ugly!
I think there was another Iron Chef ep with an even uglier fish.
@Ward have you paid attention to the avatars on the right
20:31
can anyone here think of any reason why I can't get jumbo frames working across trunks between switches?
<host1> - <switchA> - <switchB> - <host2>
Because you user PowerConnects?
:)
NEIN
it doesnt seem like a mtu mismatch either.. I can try to use a 1520 byte packet and it'll fail
Store and forward swithes?
yeah, no nexus here
come to think of it, it's like this right now: <host1> - <switchA> - <switchB> - <switchC> - <host2>
where switchA is a 2960, switchB is a 3750-X and switchC is a PC8132F
hnnnnng this annoys me
@MDMarra you were right :P
I forget that Cisco holds your hand from time to time without notifying you.. like setting an option on a port-channel automatically propagates to the member ports

All education freaks:
im so tired and unproductive today
have a 7:30am class that started today
didnt get to sleep early enough
@David It's OK I have a 7.30am work 5 days a week
You get used to it
@MarkHenderson i didnt get used to early 0-period in high school
ever
Probably because getting a teenager out of bed before 8am deserves a nobel prize
@MarkHenderson i am still a teenager at heart
20:54
My wife believes I am still 7 years old at heart so I can sympathise
I can't wait till I have an excuse to buy Lego Mindstorm
is she a pedo? lol
@David I suspect she feels like it sometimes
@MarkHenderson I had to get up at 5AM, sometimes in the 4s and occasionally in the 3s. For four years. It was awful. =(
I feel incredibly lame going to bed at 10pm to wake up at 6am
but if i dont, i'll be like i am currently
@Mark Any tips on what I can do to increase my chances of getting an Australian woman?

@WesleyDavid go to Australia ?
@WesleyDavid @Iain basically hit it on the head
@MarkHenderson @Iain You should give him HELPFUL suggestions. Here, watch...
