@MichaelHampton done.
@MichaelHampton Email doesn't matter for me. We are only using the docs component.
@Zoredache I suppose you'll be fine, then. But test your restores anyway. :)
@Adrian Great, it'll just get undone tomorrow. :P
@MichaelHampton rockin'
@jscott Backupify looks nice in theory, but the cost isn't great. When I was looking at the EDU pricing it was a 25% discount. $9,000 per year for backups is way too steep for an EDU.
That is for only 250 accounts, and we are only using it for docs.
@Adrian Eh, if I'm going to be serially reversed tomorrow, I may as well go for the 200 today, right?
06:13
@MichaelHampton nah. I'm pretty good at spreading the wealth around.
You guys are talking about tools for maintaining local backups of cloud documents, I take it?
Or cloud backups of cloud documents?
It's like lightning strikes... either cloud-to-cloud or cloud-to-ground.
I'm trying to remember the last time that Google actually lost data.
"No bandwidth to spare? No problem! If you order Blitzkloud today, we'll include five hundred feet of string with a kite on one end and a (USB) key on the other. (Caution: Blitzkloud will not be held responsible for clear weather.)"
06:35
@MichaelHampton If you delete a user in Google apps then the users documents go away. I am not protecting against Google failure, I am protecting against people forgetting to transfer document ownership, or backing up data before deleting a user.
@Zoredache OK, that's perfectly reasonable then.
I wish you could get Google apps to automatically revert A users docs to a holding account or something.
You would think so, but as far as I can tell docs belong to a user. If a user gets deleted the docs go away. There are facilities to transfer them as a user, or as an admin.
but both of them require someone to think ahead of time.
Looks like you have 5 days to get the docs back, in that case.
06:39
One thing that could trigger a serious problem was account renames with the older versions of the Google account sync. A lady gets married, someone changes their AD account, the old google account gets deleted, and a new one created. All docs are gone.
The sync tool finally fixed that a few months ago.
So the real problem is crappy application design, not untrustworthy storage.

Q: what causes drops in apache throughput?

Robbie Mckenniei was poking around in the windows task manager, and i found this cool network throughput graphing thing. so i wanted to see it max out, so i started downloading a 1.8gb image (from the localhost to a remote system). but, much to my surprise, it looked like this: i count 16 dips, so i divided ...

Hm, what's the question here?

2 hours later…
08:30
@MichaelHampton @ChrisS is a night owl atm and he got em
hey @Chopper3 how're you doing ?
08:53
@Cole I would co with something like
find /some/path \( -name '*.jpg' -o -name '*.png' -o -name '*.gif' -o -links 0 \) >somefile
and then use rsync ... --files-from=somefile and you may want to play around with the -s option to rsync too.

1 hour later…
10:03
anyone here?
10:40
@Iain Pretty good today, bit tired but that's ok

@Iain sorry about the non answer last night. I may have had a night out prior...

Zomg change!
wat
@ScottPack Change for the sake of change is fscking annoying though.
@Adrian Oh sure, change for change's sake isn't a great reason. Change, itself, is not necessarily bad no matter what humans or mSO users say.
@Iain I'm usually up until ~6am UTC
15:12
@ScottPack I prefer to suspect that change is frivolous unless providing some obvious advantage.
14 hours ago, by Michael Hampton
You are not losing your eyesight. All the bold text has been removed from Stack Exchange. Except this text...
@Adrian Hold on. What are you doing up so early!
@ScottPack Have to drive the lady to work since she smooshed her car last weekend.
she works T-Sat.
Bicycle? Legs? Thumbs?
I need the truck today or else she could drive the Exploder to work.
Just found out that there's one little catch with this job. I could be gone for 2 weeks at a time and racking up $3k/week in reimbursable expenses. Going to be working in places where it's very very expensive to eat and sleep.
Gonna need a bigger credit card for that one.
15:29
@Adrian doh.
That's my biggest concern about getting a job that I have to travel, is having to put it on my own CC's.
However, I am apparently getting an AMEX in a few weeks from work.
& was told I will need to get my passport.
@Cole do it NOW. The passport process almost always takes longer than one would expect.
@Adrian well I kinda need to wait.
Till post-op next month
Gotta update my birth certificate with my new name + new gender
@Cole Ah. That's a good reason.
I mean, I can get a letter from my Dr to get my passport changed to male - but my work wants to pay for it. So...awkward.
Not like I'll be going anytime soon, they know I'm have a surgery next month - they just don't know what.
Yeah. I ended up flying overseas after just 6 weeks in, so I was in cram mode trying to get that stuff sorted. Funny that nobody had mentioned international travel in the interview.
15:35
@Adrian maybe they thought you'd back out?
That was the dotcom that IBM ended up buying
They mentioned international travel in mine. Said I will be going to places like Ireland, Asia, India, Australia, Mexico, etc
Possibly. They were surprised that I didn't have one already since almost everyone there was from overseas.
Yeah, I've only been on a plane twice.
2011 to DC and this August to NC.
Next month will be to FL.
Just keep going further south :P
Yeah. My current boss racked up something like 200k miles this year. =/
15:38
holy shit
See, it will/would suck if I had a traveling job. I have a cat and live alone
No one to watch him, I have to hire a cat sitter for the week I'm gone to FL.
@HopelessN00b Tell me, good sir: when was the last time you met a Russian with a Hindi username?
You can leave a cat for a week... I've done it more than a few times. You'll need an extra litter box though.
@Cole I think I was paying $35/visit while I was in Idaho this summer for a cat-sitter. minimum 30 minute visit.
@ChrisS Don't they like, go nuts?
15:51
@ChrisS he eats all his food in one sitting, so that's the problem
He's only 6 months old.
@Adrian Wow. I remember getting hired as a petsitter when I was in elementary school, and... I should have worked for your parents.
@TomO'Connor They're awfully happy you came back..... otherwise they seem fine.
@Cole Just leave the bag open on the floor, he'll figure it out.
@ChrisS oh god lol
My friend has a sitter she uses $10/day
so, I'll probably just do that.
The girl lives 15 minutes from my house so it works out well.
We've 3 cats - all microchipped and our cat flap is programmed to open only their chips. We can leave them for 3 nights - longer than that we have a neighbour pop in.
@MilesErickson We had dogs, so they travelled with us. I don't have many friends that live locally, so I had to hire a sitter. The GF has good neighbors, so it's no biggie. We just make them dinner a couple times and they're happy.
I usually make them about a gallon of pollo con crema.
15:54
My kitty is microchipped too - but he's an indoor cat.
@Cole Buy a couple dozen feeder mice at the pet store and release them in your living room. Cheaper than a sitter, and not so easy to eat in one sitting.
@Cole ours come and go as they please but we lock the door so they can't get out when we go to bed
People were telling me I was crazy because I take him regularly to the vet down the street, instead of PetCo for his shots or a cheap place to get him neutered. It's sad, but my cat is like my child. He's all I really have (sad, I know) so I can't imagine not taking care of him the way I do.
@Iain I live on a busy street, on the second floor. If I had a house, that'd probably be different.
You'll stick a giant needle in your cat's back, but wont trust him to survive for a week?
@ChrisS he's an idiot
He's very attached to me, too. I feel horrible leaving him alone completely for a week.
15:58
Stay away from the pet stores, they rarely know much about veterinary medicine of any kind.
@ChrisS oh yeah, that's what I tell people. I take him to a vet down the street from me, I really like them. They're super nice and the vets will answer any questions you have.
He has all his shots, microchipped and neutered.
When I got him, he was 8 weeks - covered in fleas.
OK; so you chopped his balls of, stuck a giant needle in his back, expose him to odd chemicals regularly.... But you're worried about him "going crazy" if you leave for a week?
@ChrisS like I said, he's an idiot.
He's never been alone longer than a night.
I went to bed at like 9:30 last night, and woke up at 7 - I'm exhausted
Installing Solaris 10 in a VM to force myself to learn this shit
I just did some crazzzzy VMWare surgery.
@ewwhite Do tell.
16:12
@ewwhite details!
I have a customer with a single server running ESX 4.1... HP server. About 8 VM's on it.
That ESX 4.1 was upgraded from ESX 3.5.
The full version, with RHEL-like service console.
I looked into getting them to version 5.1, but found that the partition layouts were incompatible... specifically with systems who had been upgraded from 3.5->4.1
so these VM's were all thick-provisioned and still running...
lots of disk space needed
I have a Linux server on the same network running a different application
So I created a VPN to their site, added their host to MY virtual center (requiring a manual upload and installation of the VMWare host agents on the ESX host)...
I then exported an NFS share from the Linux box on their network... added it to the VMWare 4.1 host.
and ran storage vMotion from their host's local disks to the Linux NFS share, converting the VM's to thin-provisioned at the same time.
Once done, I downloaded ESXi to the linux server and mounted its ISO via the ESX 4.1 server's ILO and ran a fresh installation of VMWare on the host.
Remounted the Linux NFS share...
storage vMotioned the data back to local disk... updated virtual hardware and agents/tools...
And that's that...
@ewwhite You, sir, are a god.
@ewwhite is the MacGyver of SysAdmins.
I'm looking at my customers with standalone ESX boxes and thinking I should centralize them onto one of my vCenters.
It's what my work does... we have hundreds of hosts on one vCenter
@Chopper3 knows more about this, though.
Ew Java desktop for Solaris? ew.
16:31
Desktop? Solaris? No.
@MilesErickson yeah fuck this, I'm not using it.
Yeah. I had to use Jaca desktop on a Sparcstation 5 pizza box back in the mid 2000s
Awful.
@ewwhite Interview went great!
I have another one next week.
@Goatmale glad to hear it, what was the position?
16:39
@Goatmale awesome
I think so :D
Really nice looking professional offices, looked like casual but professional staff. Good stuff.
Gave me a quiz. I think I got them all correct.
@Goatmale Well done.
The only thing that was difficult was the second person I was talking to did not give me any sort of response. He just asked questions and stared blankly at me.
Throw me a head nod or something.
@Goatmale Happens. Maybe he was from HR.
17:04
@ewwhite you rang?
@Goatmale O rly?
@Chopper3 Yeah, I feel like a VMWare hack.
Yessir.
@Goatmale THey got all professional on me... I was there when we were 40 people.
There were a ton of people walking around. It was a little bit exciting..
I haven't seen the new office expansion, but either way, did you meet Joe Munson?
17:09
No, only a fellow named Patrick and Aaron.
Congratulations on being selected to move on the next step in the hiring process. I left you a voicemail a moment ago. I would like to schedule some time for a final onsite interview with our hiring manager. My contact information is listed below. Please respond with a good time to speak over the phone to discuss potential dates and times for the interview.
Subject is... "Final Onsite Interview Request" so spoilers?
good deal
Yeah.. further complicated by the fact that I got a job offer for sunday nights at another data center.. I think I have to decline that.
@ewwhite, does this sound legit?

Q: How to reset password for HP Proliant ML330 G6

XORWe have HP Proliant ML330 G6 and its BIOS is closed with password. Password is already forgotten and we can't get there. Is there any way to crack or reset a password at this box?

17:13
That's a decent question.
@tombull89 yeah, it happens...
Where is the BIOS password stored?
Is it not a case of unplug from mains, removed CMOS battery? Or does than only work for desktops?
@tombull89 you can pull the battery out, too..
but there's a specific DIP switch for it on HP servers
@Goatmale which data center?
Warning, this website looks fucking terrbile
It's basically the backend database for about 24 libraries in the area.
17:21
Yeah, don't do that.
did SWC talk $$?
Mostly Solaris.
No, I am thinking that is what this next meeting is going to be about.
@ewwhite you're not
@Chopper3 Well, I'm at a new firm, and I disagree with how we handle our multitenant VMWare setup.
you know that stuff well though
I have 1,000+ VMs and a couple of hundred hosts.
on one virtualcenter...
and I'm wondering if there's a way to get any redundancy.
(it's all vSphere 4, too)
17:25
Any advice for the next interview?
but other issues are design... our hosts are all SuperMicro, and they don't have redundant power... We tend to just add hosts and never overcommit RAM
@ewwhite @tombull89 The password is stored in flash, pulling the battery will do nothing but lose the clock.
@ChrisS on other non-proliant servers, you pull the battery
@Goatmale I dunno. Not sure what they'll do to you
@Goatmale is it a step up from where you are?
@Chopper3 So we have to worry about chargeback and a bunch of other things I would have never considered.
Oh yeah, I've done that for other (white box) servers and workstations. But Proliant servers it doesn't do anything but present an annoying message about the clock being reset.
And we finally have a question.
17:29
Hard to say, haven't really got into what I would be doing or how much I would be getting padi.
paid*
@Goatmale I mean, why are you looking?
@ewwhite Is it "How many reasons are there to not use Storage Spaces?"
What's so wrong about storage spaces?
@ChrisS I know nothing about it, except it's another reason for people to look for ZFS-like SAS controllers.
Looking to get more exposure to technologies like VMWare, SANs, Linux, more advanced networking.. stuff like that. SWC looks like a good place to work, as well.
new for me, at least.
17:30
One of the best in Chicagoland!
I plain don't trust Storage Spaces... MS hardly ever gets stuff right on the first try.
@ewwhite vmw have options to do that
We will see. :)
@Chopper3 and we have some custom scripting in place... We only have a couple of VMWare guys, and now that I'm here, I don't want to shit on what they're doing...
but our vCenter died once... 8GB RAM... physical box, no IPMI...
and that seems unacceptable. Are there any options for redundancy at that level?
oops
17:33
should we even be centrally managing all client hosts like this?
(we're a managed cloud provider)
well there's HA'ing it and there's VC heartbeat (way too expensive)
back in a bit, sorry
What's so great about Mac Book pros?
@Goatmale elegant design, runs on Intel, so it gives you Mac, Unix and Windows options.
I swap to a new Mac every year.
Does it have a BIOS?
EFI weirdness. I don't dig that deep. Apple stuff makes me want to think in terms of Apps and never tweaking defaults.
17:41
efi can do some clever stuff
I think most of the big intel server players will sell you a box with EFI rather than a BIOS these days
I was never into PC's. Never built a PC, always had a Mac laptop... since 1996...
gasp
I've heard that Mac wasn't that great until OSX.
From MAC fanboys.
I've had a mac laptop since 10.3 was released, whenever that was, i forget now. I got myself an iBook with 10.3 on because I wanted to broaden my horizons a bit
@RobM Even our newest HP Laptops come with BIOS-mode enabled by default. EFI is marked "Experimental" still
@Goatmale define "great". If something does what you want then its "great" and if it doesn't do what you want then it isn't "great", regardless of what the spec says.
17:43
@Goatmale I worked in recording studios in the years leading to OS X, so I was still firmly in the Apple camp.
@ChrisS doesn't surprise me. Lets face it, you can still buy PCs with VGA sockets, its not exactly a fast moving platform
Which is both its greatest strength and weakness
OS X is great, though. Being able to have everything you're pretty much going to need for a regular ole user out of the box is nice.
The computer I'm building right now has a VGA port; and the video card has headers to add a VGA port if I wanted too.
@Goatmale I've got a folder with all the basics and a batch file to install them all for Win7 installs.
WIn8 has all the basics built-in, but the programs are mostly Metro based and annoying as hell to use.
There's whispers of a Windows 8 Classic coming out next year, sans Metro Start Menu... No idea how true it is right now. (Classic being a reference to Coca Cola in the mid 80s introducing New Coke and quickly scrubbing it for Classic Coke)
I do like OSX. I've said it before but when they made OSX, Apple simply made Unix that works for Everyman.
I don't care for it... But I've got a *nix that works for me already, and we're 100% Windows at work.
17:49
@chriss there's a lot of rumours right now. Windows 8 is selling better than its haters (and yeah I'm firmly in that camp!) thought it would but, nowhere near good enough. And one of the most popular utilities is something that fixes the start menu.

Q: phpmyadmin port change?

RajatHow do i change my default phpmyadmin port to 443 or 9999? Is it possible or do I have use port 80 only? If possible, then how do I change share the same? Apache is listening on port 9999 for sure. However, going to URL http://<webserver>:9999/phpmyadmin/ Will give following error (wi...

@RobM Eh; Win8 sales are pretty darn pathetic.. Not sure how they compare to Vista yet.
@chriss I'm also digging Mint as a desktop Linux right now. Not enough to sell the macbook air, but enough that if someone asked me for desktop *nix I'd have no issues with giving them that and leaving them to it.
@chriss yes they're not good. They're still better than I expected - mostly because Microsoft have been ruthless about getting windows 7 off the shelves, I think, whereas with XP->Vista they left both choices around.

Regardless of technical merits *that* was a marketing error if they wanted to drive acceptance of Vista.
@RobM Win8 = 40m in the first month. Vista did 20m; not sure how that compares really, as there's far more computers around now than when Vista came out.
Lets face it, people queued for OSX. They queued for XP. They queued for Windows 95. I believe they queued for Windows 7.

Nobody Queued for Windows 8.
17:54
I laughed last night; some news reporter staked out a mall where MS Surfaces were for sale in one place, and there was an Apple store. That day, 0 Surface sales, 11 iPads.
even the msdn/technet/vol licence download sites which normally get hammered with the release of a major new MS tech were barely troubled. They've really fucked this one up.
The surface is a joke imho.
It beats me how Ballmer still has a job, to be honest, presiding over this much fail.
At $500 it's a joke. If it was $300 or $350 they'd have a reason for Apple to at least recognize them as a competitor.
You guys see all of the Surface product placement and commercials?
@RobM Agreed; he's on just about everyone's list of worst CEOs in the world.
@ewwhite Yep. MS marketing is doing a pretty good job with the pile of horse sh*t they've been handed.
@ewwhite dunno what its like over there but there's a fair amount here in the UK. And its incomprehensible, which I suppose means its a fair reflection of the product its advertising.
17:58
This is what we're being inundated with... CLICK!
oh yeah. Here too. I think its shit. "We can't find anything good to say about the actual product so here's some people dancing and waving their tablets at you".
That commercial doesn't say anything about the product except... CLICK
indeed.
It seems the surface is some sort of break dancing training device.
All I heard about the new iPhone was that it's longer.
Remember the play book? Me neither.
yeah
I just think that Apple, Google, Amazon all advertise their tablets by showing people using them.

Microsoft advertise theirs with breakdancing idiots. What are MS trying to hide?
18:06
Extended footage...
Today I learned that kids breakdancing makes me really uncomfortable.
@Goatmale why?
I have no idea... just is cringe worthy.
@Goatmale it's part of your interview prep. It's the Thursday tradition.

18:22
I can probably still windmill... I got this.
Hello IP V6

I need to figure out why my dhcp6 isn't working next

@RobM Haha, you're not wrong there. They've really dropped the ball with Surface - far too much money for far too little
@Iain Dunno, I'm using SLAAC here.
@Goatmale I had macs from OS7 and yes X did make a HUGE difference
I'm using ISC DHCPd, works fine for IPv6: Scrubbed version of my config pastebin.com/b7gAUZua
@Dan I don't know about the "new" version, that's apparent going to be running Windows 8 full rather than the RT vartiant.

howdy gents. first snowflakes of the year here in Seattle.
I really just don't understand people who continue to post newbie questions about even non-technical but sysadmin-related things for years on SF.

(How in the world do people blockquote main-site comments in here?)
@Adrian Snowflakes, in Seattle? None in Everett. What happened to my convergence zone?
@MilesErickson No kidding, eh? Was Graupel'ing for about 15 minutes.
19:54
@Adrian Neat. [You just caused me to learn the METAR code for Graupel (GS). I didn't even know there was one. Thanks for that.]
cool
Feel sorry for the poor saps outside today doing landing practice at the airstrip.
@Adrian It's actually a decent day for it. Cool, light wind, good visibility. You looking down at KBFI?
@MilesErickson KRNT over in Renton. The old B29 strip where they have the 737 paint shop.
@Adrian Paint shop? Boeing has manufactured slightly more than 7,370 737s, and every single one of them was built in Renton.
@MilesErickson Beats me. I mostly notice the unpainted jets go in and painted jets leaving.
Considering that they've bulldozed almost everything except the building right on the water down there, I'd assumed they're weren't building them there anymore.
20:03
@Adrian Fair. Ever seen the White House? I hear that the president's Press Secretary works there.
@Adrian Naw. They still make 737s there. More than ONE PER DAY.
@Adrian Which, really, is pretty amazing.
If they're all getting built there, that would explain the full-throttle high-angle climbs that I hear several times each week.
like the one right now.
I saw one actually taking off from KRNT once. That was a sight to behold. Looked like a 30-35deg climb straight off the end of the runway.
@Adrian Their first flight is from KRNT to KBFI. No passengers, no cargo, minimal fuel.
@Adrian That means awesome climb performance.
@MilesErickson Figured so. Still gives me the willies to see that.
@Adrian That's how I feel every time I take off at HTS.
Interesting. I didn't know that Bugatti is involved in the partnership that makes the 737 carbon-fiber brakes.
20:13
Dang. In 2 years they'll be completing two 737s per workday. I wonder what happens if our friends in Québec and China ever do enter the single-aisle market.
@MilesErickson Bombardier? I fly on one of those t-props every time the lady and I go to Sun Valley(KSUN).
@Adrian Q400s are awesome airplanes. They are pretty much capable of everything that the original 737 could do, but burn something like half the fuel.
@Adrian Of course, today's 737 is almost yesterday's 757.
@Adrian So, Bombardier is developing a product called the Cseries that would compete with the 737 and A320.
@MilesErickson Yeah, I noticed that. Higher ceilings, better economy & higher fuel load netting much longer ranges.
@MilesErickson That's cool. Considering how much I hate flying Airbus. Worst flight I ever had was a China airways A340 from KSEA to RCTP in Teipei.
@Adrian Never flown them, but they sure have cheap fares.
@Adrian Next trip to Asia will be on Singapore Airlines. $850 one-way for SFO to Seoul to Singapore to (anywhere in India), with stopovers. You all may not see me for a while.
@MilesErickson Yeah, I'm not a big guy. Those seats were pretty close to worn out and VERY narrow.
Ouch. That's one hell of a flight.
20:20
Stopovers.
You know, a week here, two months there.
Ah. Stopovers, not layovers.

@MilesErickson Oh, heh. Well, just because he's Hindi doesn't mean his server is. He could have a colo in Siberia or Northern Canada or Alaska or what have you.
@MilesErickson Copy the link that's go the time ago the comment was posted. Gets all one boxed.
@HopelessN00b I am liking this idea of open-air colocation in Arctic climates.
@HopelessN00b Whoa. Thanks.

I suppose it would be more accurate to say "I spent all my patience today"

@freiheit we do get occasional stickers

@voretaq7 Good idea, if I could DIY worth a damn. Guess I'll have to ask on the main. I'll call it a "server desk" to keep it from being closed OT.
and there's a rumor about a community kitten that gets boxed up and fedexed from diamond-to-diamond
but I may be the one who started that rumor :)
@HopelessN00b PRODUCT AND SERVICE RECOMMENDATIONS ARE OFF-TOPIC! WHAP
@voretaq7 as a personal coach I had to listen to the other day (mandatory fun day at work) would say: you've used up all your blue balls for the day, but when you wake up tomorrow morning, your bowl full of blue balls will be full again.
@voretaq7 OH, right. On another topic, when are you going to sleep tonight? :)
@DennisKaarsemaker Um, yeah. If your balls are blue you need to either stop getting hit in the balls, stop submerging them in freezing water, or ejaculate. And for God's sake, keep the details to yourself.
@HopelessN00b guess why the talk wasn't well received by 90% of the audience :)
@HopelessN00b Inside your gutted corpse :-)
@DennisKaarsemaker When I wake up tomorrow morning there will probably be clouds, and I won't be flying
21:53
@voretaq7 WHEN, not where.
I had the airline treatment this afternoon
but there are no scantily-clad stewardesses in my plane :(
Will someone please tell me what use Hide My Ass has in a professional system administration or desktop support environment?
Oh, running on an EC2 instance.
@HopelessN00b dunno, 10-11ish
21:55
@MichaelHampton sales trying to surf $competitor's website but getting blocked because $competitor knows your IP and doesn't like you.
@DennisKaarsemaker That explains why you'd run it at the office. It doesn't explain why you'd run it on EC2.
EC2 instance may be the mandated corporate proxy
Now that I'd like to see.
@MichaelHampton EC2 instance is outside the shit-tastic corporate firewall/webproxy/traffic-mangler?
@HopelessN00b OK, so you proxy to the EC2 instance, and then Hide My Ass because...
21:59
@MichaelHampton You're a DevOPS shop, so it's also your webserver, and 3 of your email servrs, and you don't want your traffic traced back to your company.
