@jscott Backupify looks nice in theory, but the cost isn't great. When I was looking at the EDU pricing it was a 25% discount. $9,000 per year for backups is way too steep for an EDU.

@MichaelHampton If you delete a user in Google apps then the users documents go away. I am not protecting against Google failure, I am protecting against people forgetting to transfer document ownership, or backing up data before deleting a user.
You would think so, but as far as I can tell docs belong to a user. If a user gets deleted the docs go away. There are facilities to transfer them as a user, or as an admin.
but both of them require someone to think ahead of time.
One thing that could trigger a serious problem was account renames with the older versions of the Google account sync. A lady gets married, someone changes their AD account, the old google account gets deleted, and a new one created. All docs are gone.
The sync tool finally fixed that a few months ago.

Just found out that there's one little catch with this job. I could be gone for 2 weeks at a time and racking up $3k/week in reimbursable expenses. Going to be working in places where it's very very expensive to eat and sleep.

We've 3 cats - all microchipped and our cat flap is programmed to open only their chips. We can leave them for 3 nights - longer than that we have a neighbour pop in.
@MilesErickson We had dogs, so they travelled with us. I don't have many friends that live locally, so I had to hire a sitter. The GF has good neighbors, so it's no biggie. We just make them dinner a couple times and they're happy.
I usually make them about a gallon of pollo con crema.
@Cole Buy a couple dozen feeder mice at the pet store and release them in your living room. Cheaper than a sitter, and not so easy to eat in one sitting.
People were telling me I was crazy because I take him regularly to the vet down the street, instead of PetCo for his shots or a cheap place to get him neutered. It's sad, but my cat is like my child. He's all I really have (sad, I know) so I can't imagine not taking care of him the way I do.

@ChrisS oh yeah, that's what I tell people. I take him to a vet down the street from me, I really like them. They're super nice and the vets will answer any questions you have.

I have a customer with a single server running ESX 4.1... HP server. About 8 VM's on it.
That ESX 4.1 was upgraded from ESX 3.5.
The full version, with RHEL-like service console.
I looked into getting them to version 5.1, but found that the partition layouts were incompatible... specifically with systems who had been upgraded from 3.5->4.1
so these VM's were all thick-provisioned and still running...
lots of disk space needed
I have a Linux server on the same network running a different application
So I created a VPN to their site, added their host to MY virtual center (requiring a manual upload and installation of the VMWare host agents on the ESX host)...
I then exported an NFS share from the Linux box on their network... added it to the VMWare 4.1 host.
and ran storage vMotion from their host's local disks to the Linux NFS share, converting the VM's to thin-provisioned at the same time.
Once done, I downloaded ESXi to the linux server and mounted its ISO via the ESX 4.1 server's ILO and ran a fresh installation of VMWare on the host.
Remounted the Linux NFS share...
storage vMotioned the data back to local disk... updated virtual hardware and agents/tools...
The only thing that was difficult was the second person I was talking to did not give me any sort of response. He just asked questions and stared blankly at me.

We have HP Proliant ML330 G6 and its BIOS is closed with password. Password is already forgotten and we can't get there. Is there any way to crack or reset a password at this box?
Oh yeah, I've done that for other (white box) servers and workstations. But Proliant servers it doesn't do anything but present an annoying message about the clock being reset.
Looking to get more exposure to technologies like VMWare, SANs, Linux, more advanced networking.. stuff like that. SWC looks like a good place to work, as well.
@Chopper3 and we have some custom scripting in place... We only have a couple of VMWare guys, and now that I'm here, I don't want to shit on what they're doing...
but our vCenter died once... 8GB RAM... physical box, no IPMI...
and that seems unacceptable. Are there any options for redundancy at that level?

The computer I'm building right now has a VGA port; and the video card has headers to add a VGA port if I wanted too.
@Goatmale I've got a folder with all the basics and a batch file to install them all for Win7 installs.
WIn8 has all the basics built-in, but the programs are mostly Metro based and annoying as hell to use.
There's whispers of a Windows 8 Classic coming out next year, sans Metro Start Menu... No idea how true it is right now. (Classic being a reference to Coca Cola in the mid 80s introducing New Coke and quickly scrubbing it for Classic Coke)
@chriss there's a lot of rumours right now. Windows 8 is selling better than its haters (and yeah I'm firmly in that camp!) thought it would but, nowhere near good enough. And one of the most popular utilities is something that fixes the start menu.

@chriss I'm also digging Mint as a desktop Linux right now. Not enough to sell the macbook air, but enough that if someone asked me for desktop *nix I'd have no issues with giving them that and leaving them to it.
@chriss yes they're not good. They're still better than I expected - mostly because Microsoft have been ruthless about getting windows 7 off the shelves, I think, whereas with XP->Vista they left both choices around.
Regardless of technical merits *that* was a marketing error if they wanted to drive acceptance of Vista.
