@ewwhite Will you still be able to receive my sexts?
@ScottPack You're sharing? =(
@ScottPack Nast!
Did @goatmale ever come back?
@WesleyDavid Uhh...uhh....I thought you were the one leaving? Did I mis-reply that?
@ewwhite Speaking of inappropriate sexts...
@ewwhite Nasty sexts make you think of @goatmale? Are you sure you don't work for Brazzers?
@ewwhite And I didn't know he left. Did I miss a lovers' quarrel?
No, he had an interview today that I set up.
00:04

I heard he got tired of studying and blew it off.
@Cole ±
@ScottPack kidding, right?
@ewwhite Quite.
@ewwhite Here's how you can tell if @ScottPack is talking shit: He's talking.

Q: What's the proper way to reset SELinux?

alexusI'm using REDHAT 6.x and I think something went wrong so I'd like to reset EVERYTHING and just redo it, how would one go about it?

Well I heard that @goatmale got hit by three zebras and a monkey.
@ScottPack I already put a downvote and VTC on that. Probably needs a flamethrower though.
This was definitely too localized. Good call.
I'm angry that HTML comments don't work in SF comments.
Gah! I hate accepted answers with zero upvotes. /petpeeve
@MichaelHampton Yeah, I went ahead and answered it anyway. The one that was on there was terribly unhelpful.
00:08
@ScottPack coq
Oh that reminds me, that shit answer needs a downvote too... how it got to 4 I have no idea.
@WesleyDavid Don't be so coy.
@MichaelHampton Just look at my answer history if you want to see stunning amounts of upvoted refuse.
@MichaelHampton Probably because most sysadmins can't be buggered to understand selinux and don't realize what's actually happening.
@ScottPack we don't want to know SELinux.
00:10
@MichaelHampton The "right" answer to that awful question is format, reinstall, right?
Trust me, you do not want to know too much of the internals of SELinux.
@ewwhite I'm sorry, I don't quite follow. You sound like Charlie Brown's teacher.
@ewwhite Damn straight. Classic case of cure, worse than disease.
@HopelessN00b Which is exactly what I told him to do a couple of minutes before you. :)
@HopelessN00b The right answer is shoot the guy who asked the question for not actually saying anything about what the problem was.
You can lead a developer to documentation, but you can't make him think.

00:12
@ScottPack Gah, fack. Dunno why I'm not getting the "new answer" notification anymore.
@HopelessN00b DevOps.
@MichaelHampton Right, right, I keep forgetting this SA site is run on DevOPS.
@HopelessN00b I would totally get you an animated gif of somebody shaking their head but Handbrake is making even close voting painful.
@HopelessN00b They just "deployed" some changes minutes ago.
@MichaelHampton Which reminds me, I need to pickup some duct tape at Home Depot.
00:16
anyone ever work with a neatgear gs748T ?
Steward bitch, badges!!!!
Wait, something like that.

A: Allow users to run programs that require administrative rights

HopelessN00bNo. Action. Needed. Now with 100% more button, Booyah!

Was that meant to be a comment?
@MichaelHampton True story.
I think it was meant to be a chat message.
00:25
Also, have some of the fonts changed on the site?
@jscott It's actually an answer to the question.
@jscott Many elements had their bold face removed. In the last 30 minutes.
@HopelessN00b ?
Okay, now I'm starting to agree that "Too Localized" is being abused. This is just a wrong vote:
@jscott Oh, you expect my answers to answer the actual question they're answering? Guess I could give it a shot.

Q: Windows 2008 R2 DNS returns same result

SyRenityWe have a really strange issue with recently installed DNS server. No matter which request submitted, it always returns 1.1.1.1, until the whole server is restarted. Restarting only the DNS service doesn't help. After the restart, the issue returns after some time. Has anyone encountered this,...

NARQ at worst. But Too localized? WTF

Q: Processing the Review / Late Answers queue

BryanI've been working through some of the review queues when I get a few spare minutes, but have a bit of an issue with the Late answers from new users queue. It's consistently one of the largest queues, and I often struggle to help reduce it because, many of the answers look okay, but aren't worthy...

@MichaelHampton Ah, thanks. Haven't been on since I left work and I thought my sight was failing faster than normal.
@jscott As I noted earlier, DevOps strikes again.
@WesleyDavid Yeah, it's the whole "close all the things!!!!" trip half the site's on.
Went through my 20 close reviews today, used 9 VTC's. ick.
The /review sits at 158, from this end, wow you guys have been doing some work. That's great.
00:30
@jscott I'd be more impressed if there weren't about 50% of the close votes being highly questionable lately.
@HopelessN00b Oh, I didn't catch that meta, thanks, I get it now.
@HopelessN00b Meh, there will always be close votes you disagree with. That's why they're votes.
@MichaelHampton I also believe SE has implemented review auditing to help.
@MichaelHampton Yeah, and I'm a bit of a softie, but 50%... that's just ridiculous. And considering we've had the mods reverse three on meta publicly in the past couple days, I think it's safe to say there's a quality problem with the natives being too VTC-happy.
42
Q: Why am I getting the message "You've failed too many recent review audits"?

Nik....Today I clicked on Review and saw the message below. You've failed too many recent review audits - looks like you might need a break. Come back in in 7 days and try again. Why does this type of message appear? Is there any daily limit to viewing reviews on Stack Overflow?

^^"Why was my dumbass review banned?"^^
@jscott A lot of VTCs are rush jobs by badge hunters, methinks.
00:34
+42 on mSO. Go figure.
@WesleyDavid Probly, but "leave open" gets you the badge even quicker, not having to pick a reason. Don't make sense to me.
@HopelessN00b Dunno, the two I see definitely needed closing, at least in my opinion.
@MichaelHampton Oh, the two the mods reopened? No, they need a downvote pile-on, not a closing.
@WesleyDavid I, along with Lucas Kauffman, hammered through nearly 8K of the Low Quality queue, well before there were badges to be had. I did my earnest to vote/flag/skip accordingly. In the interest of full disclosure, he bested me by over 500 reviews.
Though, since the whole "downvoting too much is evil/toxic/whatever" thing, I think the mods have kind of lost any leg to stand on in the "a VTC is not a super-downvote" argument.
Yeah, they'll both get re-closed shortly, for being crap.
00:39
So it may be purely academic at this point, but crap questions that are real questions and on-topic, ought to be voted into the basement, not closed.
Publicly scold people for downvoting crap, and crap gets closed instead. Shocking.
I'm wondering how long until I hit the "review ban" for too many "Leave Open".
@HopelessN00b You get what you ask for, I suppose.
@MichaelHampton Honestly, it kinda surprises me that a network Joel started would fall for the same problem with metrics that he writes against himself... but yeah, you get people behaving to meet the metrics, rather than what the metrics are supposed to be measuring.
And the obvious solution - get rid of the steward badges - will never happen.
@MichaelHampton Yup, well he called it out in 2006 (and I've seen another blog post or two of his on the same thing), and damned if he wasn't right, right?
00:44
Mmmm. Beer:30.
@Adrian Ha! Always berr:30 somewhere. Enjoy.
Ok, how is this -1, 3 vtc? If anyone alludes that this is some how "shopping" [for a utility that does this] I will strongly disagree.

Q: Change ownership and permissions of file

JimIs it possible to change owner/group of a file AND permissions with 1 command? I tried: chmod user1:groupOfUser1=770 file.txt but it does not work.

It's more u & l
As it currently stands, this question is not a good fit for our Q&A format. We expect answers to be supported by facts, references, or specific expertise, but this question will likely solicit debate, arguments, polling, or extended discussion. If you feel that this question can be improved and possibly reopened, see the FAQ for guidance.
If a question gets closed, do you lose the accepted answer on it?
00:59
But you only know that due to your Linux knowledge. It's not inherently bad
Nope. And you can still accept an answer, if one was made.
I don't think so, but noticed that the accepted answer here got removed around the time the question was closed.
@Adrian I'm not going to migrate a question, just to have it rejected at the destination site.
@WesleyDavid The user can always unaccept an answer and change their mind.
D'awww. John G's avatar:
@jscott I wonder if you can use setfacl for that.
can you update the default owner/group permissions with setfacl?
01:15
@jscott script it. Crappy question.
@Zoredache I don't actually know, tbh, I've never used setfacl.
@jscott neither have I!
well, okay... maybe once... but it doesn't get used regularly.
Ouch! I am not sure to agree or to find it too crude: "If those six-year-olds had all carried guns, this never would have happened."
@ewwhite I get the "script it" part... but I don't know every Linux command available, is that crappy? unprofessional? I know the question probably doesn't deserve +5, but is it that bad?
@ewwhite Does anyone actually use ACLs on Linux?
01:17
@Zoredache I think most people don't even know they're there.
@jscott I'm thinking what a good admin, junior admin and a newbie would do.
@jscott The guy probably asked the wrong question. If he actually has some real requirement that the permissions and owner be changed at the exact same time he should probably be asking 'for a method to atomically update the owner/permissions' instead of asking for a tool.
knowing that chmod and chown cover it, I would do this in two steps... knowing that many Unix commands get stacked|combined|whatever, it's just the natural flow.
@ewwhite Ok, I think we're agreeing on that then, yes, I would, and would expect a PFY to, script it. But is the question OT? Not constructive? I don't think so.
Maybe I need to review the recent reviews before I review. I may be losing touch with the community's present standards. :)
I think we're just being crabby.
01:20
@ewwhite :)
Well, I've got to run to the store and get SWMBO some skittles and peanut butter filled pretzels. I do trust that you all will sort this out before my return.
I have to stand by my NC vote on that one. There's no One True Right Answer, as far as I can see, and the multiple "right answers" are likely to generate debate as to which one is the One True Right Answer. Hence, not constructive.
@michael-Hampton that's why you pop in and ask them
If you want to reopen it or migrate it, though, be my guest.
Am I going crazy or does the site's CSS keep changing?
@ShaneMadden Both.
01:28
@MichaelHampton That makes sense.
@ShaneMadden DevOps got rid of all the bold text.
@MichaelHampton Numbers on the questions are like.. different font maybe?
The next "enhancement" for Stack Exchange will be the use of Comic Sans for all site fonts.
6
@ShaneMadden Same font, it just isn't bold anymore, so it looks bizarre.
Good, someone else noticed the change. I though my eyesight was getting worse.
Someone could star that for the benefit of others. Or not.
01:31
if you guys are feeling crabby, what's your opinion on this?

Q: Quantifying the effects of partition mis-alignment

I can't find anything that tells me how to actually quantify the effects of mis-aligned partitions. Some of the general inform...

@ewwhite I thought you were going to answer it. :)
@MichaelHampton he got all shitty...
The performance problems I don't think are relevant to this question. My question is not "please help me solve my performance problems", but rather, "please help me better understand the effects of partition mis-alignment so I can decide for myself if it's related to my issues." — Matt Dec 11 at 2:21
I did VTC, but he edited his question later.
That looks so strange.
It's like.. off-center.
@ewwhite Well I was confused since the very first sentence is I'm experiencing some significant performance issues on an NFS server.
01:32
You are not losing your eyesight. All the bold text has been removed from Stack Exchange. Except this text...
@Zoredache yeah, not a happy admin.

Q: What's up with the new CSS?

whenever I sniff some financial/trading application questions, this happens.
@ewwhite Someone could probably get free rep by summarizing the this technet article for that question.
02:06
Anyone used backupgoo.com and have any opinions? We are looking for inexpensive backup Google Apps EDU.
@Zoredache Test restores, obviously. It backs up email, but has no functionality to restore it.
So I guess the excuse for un-bolding all of Stack Exchange is to "make the site load faster".
@Zoredache We use Backupify.
It is not great. But the company is very receptive to customer feedback.
I didn't know this until just now, but we're on their Case Studies page.
02:28
I support Comic Sans.
@WesleyDavid Ah, yes, but does Comic Sans support you grasshopper?

@MichaelHampton OH NOES CHANGE IS TEH TERRORBULL!!

@ScottPack You're in luck. The poster is in the same state. Or if not, he should be.
WTF. The CSS just changed on the pinned posts. I no longer shows am/pm on my screen and it did 20 seconds ago.
@Adrian Do you really need 15:35pm ?
The times I see are all before 12:00, leaving it ambiguous for North American users.
Like octal without the leading zero.
@Adrian Just because your side of the country is behind the times...
03:31
@ScottPack I just nuked that thing.
@WesleyDavid I refuse to do anything about that. I already made myself look like an unreasonable jerk by misreading a question earlier tonight. I will not stoop to putting a link to the wikipedia article on VPN as a comment.
@MichaelHampton Fuck yeah. I got a posse.
@ScottPack do I have to go all hissy hissy on him?
@ScottPack I read that as "Fuck yeah I pet a goose."
@WesleyDavid It looks better on you than me.
@WesleyDavid Nah, those things shit all over the place.
@ScottPack Pfft. I think we're pretty far ahead with our marriage equality and legalized pot.
@Adrian And by my count about 3 hours.
@Adrian See, you're 3 hours behind me. Get it? Behind the times? God I am spectacular.
:)
03:35
@ScottPack When it's beer:30, such minor concerns aren't mentionable. Looks like my co-workers floated one of the company kegs this evening. It's no longer showing on the internal web page.
Do you mean to say that you work at a brewery?
@ScottPack No, I ended up at a dot-com. Which is awesome.
@Adrian You know who else is a dot-com?
The usual offer of a beer to any Comms Room folks is still standing, but I might be hauling them to the company cafeteria.
@ScottPack There. I answered it. You're welcome.
03:37
@Adrian Seattle?
@ScottPack Yeah. Hiring two more people next week. Several more openings next month
@Adrian I'll keep your offer of company beer in mind. I've never made it out there, though I hear it's nice.
Yeah. Especially in the summer. And we don't get much snow, though it incapacitates the city when we do. The whole place is built on an incline and there's no much flat grounds.

Does either of these actually answer the question?
Neither of those make sense to me.
03:42
Go away @Scott, you are drunk.
Isn't there a rule that questions and answers must be written in English?
@MichaelHampton I actually think so. Or, at least, Jeff whined about it on a blog post once.
Eh, I just flagged both of them. @Iain can figure it out when he wakes up.
Okay, okay. Breathe. Gotta stop instigating.
03:45
@Adrian Sounds like you've taken an order-of-magnitude step up. Congratulations.
@MilesErickson Yeah, I'm really quite happy. The full-throttle GoGoGo starts in a couple weeks and we pretty much work 18 hour days when on-site, but it's fine living when we're home. They don't keep folks around as contractors very long though, so the big big money won't last forever.
Now that I've done you a favor, @WesleyDavid, time for me to go to bed. G'night gents.
@ScottPack Smooches.
@Adrian Sounds like you're happier though. Change is good for the brain
@Adrian Yup. Sounds like my kind of work. Definitely, congratulations.
03:47
I'm torn. Should I downvote, VTC, or answer?
Yeah. Going to have to make an effort to stay sharp though as it is very niche. But the skills I do have are quite useful there. Very excited.
@MichaelHampton Why not do it all?
@MilesErickson We're not supposed to be mean anymore.
@MichaelHampton Per @Adrian, answer and upvote.
03:48
upvote all the crap.
Yeah, Stack Exchange has entered the Endless September Summer of Love...
Hm, let's see... If I setup OpenVpn on a server and... Ok, if YOU set it up then you're a home user and you should GTFO.
Your question does not appear to be on topic for Server Fault as written. You may find certain aspects of your question better asked at some of our sister sites, such as Super User or IT Security. Be sure to check the site's FAQ prior to posting to ensure that your question is on topic, and search for existing questions as well. (Oh, I didn't downvote either...) — Michael Hampton 1 min ago
@Adrian None of those three things, or all of them combined, is mean. Have fun with the SF trifecta.
The ServerFault Trifecta is a downvote, a VTC, and a snarky answer.
The Superfecta is those three, plus getting your answer deleted.
The TomTomfecta is those four, plus getting banned.
It's like the Gordy Howe Hatrick: Goal, assist, fight.
@WesleyDavid Sadly, that's all rather subjective though. I'm pretty sure we got yelled at for that a couple weeks ago.
@Adrian It was less about the number of downvotes, and more about the hive-smacking of dropping bad main-site questions and comments in here for the sole or majority purpose of calling in backup.
I did it a lot. I'd see a dipshit comment on an answer, or a comment war, and want to get some backup in on the situation so would post a link to the comment expecting some other big names to show up and weigh in. That was just silly of me; I see that. I accept that. I am mending ways.
I know, but the technology to ascertain intentions behind dropping a question in here isn't all that reliable.
So I've decided that I'm going to err on the side of not getting yelled at and having my time wasted.
04:04
@Adrian Just don't drop questions in here. Everything else as usual. Trifecta the town red.
Actually, I like the term "ServerFault Hatrick" better.
ServerFault Superfecta next, then TomTomfecta.
@WesleyDavid Yeah, I think I'll pass. There's legitimate reason for dropping a question in here. And if that otherwise innocuous activity is now persecuted, fuck it.
I've dropped plenty of questions in here since then, and I don't feel persecuted.
I wish the VTC room would get resurrected. (Look at me not being the change I advocate!)
I'm still annoyed by the tone that discussion took. public reprimand pisses me off and often enough pisses me off permanently.
Hmm... I never saw it as public reprimand of us. Just a disagreement on form. Maybe I'm too thick furred to feel the censure.
@ScottPack [_]D<(X_X)> <-- I think you've had enough beer for one night, good sir.
Hey... I've got an idea. Who's up for some fun in 2013?
04:12
@WesleyDavid I'm scared
@WesleyDavid I'm mostly up for making enough money in 2013 that I can swim in the cash like Scrooge McDuck.
Let's get a dozen SF members to move to SuperUser / Root Access and see what we can do.
TL;DR Let's invade SuperUser.
Anyone with me?
@WesleyDavid Stupid's contagious. Be careful.
@WesleyDavid gb2/i/
@Adrian You made it out of $lastJob - so there's hope.
04:14
@WesleyDavid Curable though, if one's very lucky.
I think it could be fun.
@Wesley Que?
@ScottPack We're discussing a SuperUser invasion and going all Gunnery Sergeant Hartman on their buttocks'
@WesleyDavid Is there a plan?
@ScottPack He's high.
04:15
@WesleyDavid Caroling?
Too much catnip.
@MilesErickson Jan 1, we unite.
We storm the new questions queueueue as well as Root Access chat.
Seriously, am I the only one offended that SuperUser named their chat room ROOT ACCESS
@Wes I more meant your comment about me having had too much beer.
@WesleyDavid We are going to ask questions on SU?
@WesleyDavid I could get behind invading the chat room.
04:17
@MilesErickson No, we storm it as in we trawl through to answer stuff right.
@Adrian Sounds fun.
@WesleyDavid Ah. Yes, we could do that.
@ScottPack Oh so I need a reason to slander you with accusations of substance abuse? What happened to us Scott. =(
@WesleyDavid I think I'm going to end up falling inside the event horizon of this job though.
@Adrian That would be a good thing. Good jobs are good.
@WesleyDavid But, at the stroke of midnight in which time zone? @MarkHenderson's, I presume?
04:18
@WesleyDavid Hypocritical on my part though, considering how much I bitch about that phenomenon.
@MilesErickson Wherever you are when it becomes Jan 1. No hard dates, just a starting point. See if we can keep it up for at least a month.
@Adrian Just out of curiosity, did you work with a recruiter?
@WesleyDavid A month? I am going to need some catnip. And a tail. And claws.
@MilesErickson Yeah. They had to work pretty hard to lure me in.
Did I just spend 8 paragraphs to explain to somebody that they should have checked the man page?
@MichaelHampton Probably. After all, we are polite people, and we don't just tell them to read the man page.
04:20
@MichaelHampton Sure. But it's mean to simply tell them to read the man page like they should've in the first place.
@Adrian Endless September...
@MilesErickson At least. I'd like to do it for a quarter, just to see what happens when a goodly amount of SFers cross lines and stir stuff up.
@MichaelHampton ServerFault is as much about points and helping people as it is about pontificating
@MichaelHampton Pretty much.
OK, then I submit for your approval...

A: Linux: find thin server running on port 80 and kill it

Michael Hamptonthin is a Ruby gem, so it only makes sense that the Ruby interpreter would be running it. A typical invocation of thin would be: bundle exec rails server thin -p $PORT -e $RACK_ENV In the process list, from the ps command, this appears something like: 6870 pts/3 Rl+ 0:01 /usr/bin/ruby...

04:21
@MichaelHampton yeah, saw that pop up in a review queue.
Fucking Ruby.
@JoelESalas And about your rack. Nicest rack in town.
@Adrian :P
@MichaelHampton the Q, not your answer.
@ScottPack Seriously, though, if you were going to do that with a programming language, wouldn't you choose Ruby? It's either that or C, depending on how you like it.
04:22
@Adrian First posts, then?
@MichaelHampton What's wrong with good old fashioned netstat -tulpn
@MichaelHampton think so. I still hit the first post queue occasionally.
I'd much rather have a web app in Ruby. If you write it in C, you end up with G-WAN.
I think I'll leave my VTC count at exactly 1100.
@MichaelHampton GWAN is awesome
04:23
@JoelESalas Your rack is awesome.
@MichaelHampton Don't you talk bad about G-WAN!! -.-
@MilesErickson :3
@Miles I do most (all these days?) of my work in perl.
@ScottPack That's unfortunate
@Miles I also despise the bottomless pit of dependencies that crop up whenever I ever have to deal with someone's Ruby or perl webapp.
04:26
+++ATH
@Joel If you want. It works well for my needs and fits the way I think.
@ScottPack For a rails app, bundle install solves all your problems
@ScottPack Indeed... anything that uses gem or cpan, good luck building it from scratch if it was written 2 years ago and doesn't work with the current version of (whatever).
@MilesErickson Such a huge nutroll. Python is at least somewhat ok at that
@ScottPack But, I like Ruby. It's beautiful.
@ScottPack Like @Joel's rack.
04:29
@MilesErickson Not as beautiful as you, Miles.
how the heck does chkdsk figure that checking 158k of 172k index entries is only 49% done?
@WesleyDavid I am handsome. Ruby is beautiful. We complement one another.
@ChrisS Microsoft has never managed to make a progress display that works. Not in 20 years.
@ChrisS Microsoft Math, yes?
@Chris Floating point math was perfected on the Pentium.
04:31
Time until Microsoft makes an accurate progress bar: 1981 [============> ] lol
The progress graph in Win8 is interesting; though it still hangs at 99% like every other progress bar.
What's worse, Microsoft has made reverse progress with progress bars.
Sort of like energy bars juiced up with L-Tryptophan.
Night night, pervs.
Ooh, he purred at us.
Sweet dreams, kitty.
@WesleyDavid laterz

@ChrisS "Strictly speaking, progress is not a function: The installer loops back on itself several times!"
Microsoft? Progress? bwahahahahaha!

@Adrian well.. they....um.... er......
yeah fine ok.
Time to implement a recursive progress bar?
@MichaelHampton what, you want to measure the progress of a congressional circle-jerk?
04:57
@voretaq7 You only need a normal progress bar for that.
@MichaelHampton no
you need one that starts full and slowly empties
like our national coffers
they've actually gone off to the left of the progress dialog...
Oh, so a negative progress bar!

If the elections were like the MS progress bar, in two hours you'll get a notice that the winner could not be determined and we'd have to have an entire election all over again.
@MilesErickson I bet you he's using IIS.
@MichaelHampton Who the hell uses IIS? Oh, wait, StackExchange.
@MichaelHampton Does IIS even do name-based virtual hosts? It must, somehow... but all I remember in the pointy-clicky-makes-you-sicky IIS manager is that each site has a place to configure the listening port.
@MichaelHampton Ah. Yup, there's a way, and yup, it's stupid.
@MilesErickson I cheated and looked at his question history on SU. He is definitely using IIS and has a crappy Netgear home router.
Still not sure if he's an actual home user or just cheaping out.

@MichaelHampton OK, updated my answer.
I still think it should get sent to SU.
Probably. But I wanted to see if he would admit to the home use first...
Well, you can keep it here. Looks like 19 answer upvotes will take me to 10K.
Ha, I'm at 19896. Just another 104 rep and I can quit!
Nice!
There really ought to a prize for 40K or 50K. Perhaps one should become an SFCIE or something.

Crap, I marked a question as a duplicate of the wrong question.

Now, you get to see whether everyone else is paying attention.
Probably not. Nobody in chat reads the main site unless a question gets posted here.
OK, false alarm, GNOME 3 still sucks.
