Does it bother anyone else when new users answers old (really old) questions?
@TomO'Connor Not if the answers are good. Unfortunately that's not very common.
Sanity check: When an AD user is deleted, people won't get bounce messages for that user if they mail a DL that the user was a part of, right?
Well, second chemo done, ok so far, we'll see - here's a couple of questions though; a) I fancy buying myself a 'cheer up' present, just one, I know I could get both but that's being spoiled, so it's either a small'ish train set (never been into them before but I saw a nice one) or one of those AR.Drone 2.0 helicopter things - which one should I get? and also has anyone been on the Venice-Simplon Orient Express and if so was it worth it?
@Chopper3 Helicopter and nope
@Chopper3 What @MDMarra says
13:45
Are you feeling better after this chemo than you did after the first one?
@Chopper3 Air drone for sure - depending on how much you want to splash out you get get some much nicer ones.
@Chopper3 I'd go for the AR.Drone
And the trainset.
Then make those tilt-shift videos from the hovering drone.
and you do deserve both of those. Absolutely. ^.^
@MDMarra Deleted users are deleted. Not in groups anymore.
...unless it was something odd, like a contact, or an address being added to a dl, rather than an AD user.... that would cause a bounce, I bet.
There's a thread here on EduGeek about differernt copters.
@HopelessN00b yeah, I think we just have a minor replication hiccup here then
13:55
Depending on what train set, the Hornby London 2012-styled engines and sets have been drastically reduced recently.
I see nothing wrong with spoiling yourself, but if if were me and I was picking one toy it'd be the one that flies at the top of the list every time
@ewwhite Slashdot doesn't care about technical users.. Hasn't since Taco left years ago.
Their focus is "the largest viewing market possible"
Hm, I think that's about the time I stopped reading it.
@JeffFerland OK, I gave you an answer, but you might not like it. :)
@ChrisS although that seems like a question we see here a lot...
There are a bunch of responses that say, "use ZFS!"
Hmmph
14:07
It's the classic problem with one company acquiring another; the buying company fundamentally does not understand the bought company's business model - they end up alienating all of the bought company's valuable customers, can't figure out why, then try to adapt the business model to something their familiar with. Their paying customers (advertisers) have started figuring this out... notice how intrusive the ads have gotten (in an attempt to appease the cashflow source)
Art Lecturer : <leaves keys to cabinet full of expensive macbook pros in classroom>
... time passes...
Art Lecturer : Does anyone know why one of our Macbook Pros is missing?
Our Helpdesk : ...... <facepalm>
@RobM Yeah, why was only one missing?
yeah. that's the only question I have, too
@ewwhite Ugh, the stupid... it burns. "RAID drives are the fastest" - as if "RAID" is a type of hard drive.
Do you guys have a lot of files? Personal storage? I mean, I'm pretty much under a TB...
0
Q: Best redundant way to set up multiple drives of different sizes

moparisthebestI have a linux server (running Ubuntu 12.04 Server currently) that I need to set up multiple hard drives of differing sizes in primarily for media/backup purposes. The sizes are: 1x2TB 1x1TB 2x500GB 2x3TB And I'll probably add more at some later date. I've set up quite a few servers in the ...

14:12
@HopelessN00b - I forgot last night to share the monitor you should buy
personally, at home you mean? About 1.5 Tb, there's a lot of music and movies in that
At least make one attempt to do it yourself before asking for help. — Michael Hampton 11 secs ago
@ewwhite I did, before I deleted a bunch of old porn...
@RobM I mean, when you're in the multi-terabyte range, what are you storing? Even a massive pr0n collection shouldn't be in that range.
I'm at 2.5 TB (usable) and expanding to 4.0 soon. Lots-o-video content (movies and tv shows)
@ChrisS home DVR and media server, right?
14:14
I've had difficulties lately with transcoding DVDs too; so I've been stuck storing 5GB of vob
well yeah, the only way I've got that amount of storage is with a media server full of movies
@ewwhite I'd say I'm under 2. 250GB Boot disk and 2x 2TB disks mirrored. All my photos and music, dad's music, brotheres music, some films and TV shows.
@ewwhite Yeah; moving it to the cloud next week! Well, a colo server, but my fam doesn't care where it is, so I'm going with "cloud" cause it impresses them. =]
Oooh, where are you going to host it?
14:15
@ChrisS I've used Handbrake for DVD ripping - never had any issues.
@ewwhite I'm around 10TB now... the vast, vast majority of it being video (TV shows, HD movies and the like).
@HopelessN00b sheeeet....
that's a lot.
all my personal data is backed up to crashplan
@tombull89 1. I'm not running Windows on these systems. 2. I've used Handbrake and found it to be extremely limiting (I've spent a lot of time customizing codec knobs)... I probably aught to look at it again for these however... at least to get the file size down
I'm going to put a plexiglass protector over my screen in the mornings, and label it the TomTom defender otherwise the coffee I spit out each after reading one of his answers is eventually going to stain my screen.
3
14:17
Using crashplan at home, too. I did my first backup, 441GB. It took eight days.
@RobM - love crashplan :)
One of my guys got a major promotion this morning - just talked to him and I genuinely couldn't be happier, he's a great guy and has been picking up a lot of my slack while I've been away - I'm literally full of joy
Good morning good folks.
it's great for home use
we run a crashplan pro server at the office, with four 2TB luns attached, all our customers back up their stuff to us
14:17
@ChrisS It's good for Mac as well. Granted it's not brilliant but it's easy to use and does the job well.
That's good news @Chopper3 nice to see someone in the trenches getting recognition too
the versioning and file history engine is awesome
@tombull89 yeah i run handbrake on the mac. Bit fiddly to set up but ok once you're there
@ewwhite Yeah, had to buy a ~$15,000 server for it all. Not that I paid anywhere near retail, but it's still kinda depressing when I think about how much I've spent on the media in the first place, and then to get it into a format I use... I could be driving a much, much nicer car instead.
@tombull89 The only Mac I own, I installed Win8 on for my in-laws. =]
14:18
like... it's 90% of what people NEED from backups
@HopelessN00b want to buy my Sun x4540 Thor server?
we now don't even bare metal backup fileservers, just turn on volume shadow copy or snapshotting if its a NAS, and crashplan the data
@RobM Yeah, big promotion too - about another £25k/pa, car, more holidays, better pension rate, home phone/broadband, better health insurance etc. really worthwhile
@Chopper3 "Full of joy - and horse tranquilizer - but it's definitely the joy I'm feeling"

@ChrisS zero booze or recreationals during all this cancer business :(
@TheCleaner Heh. Buy, no way. Steal... maybe... though it does seem like an unwise idea to hang several square feet of evidence prominently on the wall...
dayum. I'm jealous of him. I could use a promotion like that. Good to know it can still happen
@Chopper3 Thought they put everyone on various pain meds for chemo. My aunt and cousin both were...
Damn, my bad... 32 square feet of evidence. Probably a bad idea.
@ewwhite Yeah, but... no way I could justify that to myself. Next big purchase is gonna be a car.
@ChrisS not pain for me, LOTS during and after the surgery, including raw morphine which was fucking ACES, but none now, lots of anti-nausea and antibiotics though
14:22
@HopelessN00b I'll sell it cheeep!
good morning fellow happy people
they don't like you drinking or anything while you're on almost any drugs these days as it can change how they work or how strong a dose you get. Just a fact of life :-( my drinking's going to be seriously limited over christmas
@ewwhite googled it - first pictures that came up were from your Flickr. How much does that thing weigh?!
@ewwhite Stop tempting me, dammit. bought two new IPS monitors, a graphics card to handle them, a 60" plasma TV and a new UPS since September... it's been an expensive season already.
@RobM why what's up? I don't miss the booze to be honest
@HopelessN00b what GPU? I just got a 660ti and I'm loving it
14:25
@tombull89 a lot. Maybe 120lbs.
If anyone wanted to pay shipping I had a Radeon card here that came with my alienware box I'm not using
What model #?
@Chopper3 That's the one. Two 27" IPS monitors, one normal 27" monitor, and a 60" plasma... all hooked in at once. It's... awesome. Just need to find a way to work from home, and I'll be set.
3GB ram, 800mhz clock
14:26
@SpacemanSpiff GTX 555? if so that's what I have spare right now too
@SpacemanSpiff damn, and you're in chicago too.
they were in crossfire mode, but i had to remove it to put in a FusionIO card :)
@SpacemanSpiff oh you said radeon sorry, that's a new card, what did you upgrade to? 7990?
@SpacemanSpiff How much do you want for it?
@SpacemanSpiff ah, I see, loves me some fusionIO :)
14:27
nah, the box shipped with two cards in crossfire mode, i have no use for two video cards
The card? $40, you pay shipping, or if you're in Chicago, buy me lunch.
@SpacemanSpiff nice. I have a 7870.
@Chopper3 nothing major but I'm on antidepressants - went a little off the walls a few months ago and earned myself some nice monthly assessments and at least 6 months of drugs
i think that card still goes for $350 at least so... that's a deal i think
@SpacemanSpiff I used to spend a lot of time in St. Charles years ago
@RobM sounds fun
@SpacemanSpiff I will buy you lunch!
14:28
Haha, I think @Goatmale has a new video card.
@RobM I mean, your gravatar was a pony for a really long time. That can wear on a guy
@Goatmale - aight... i'm around tomorrow :) then I go to Fargo, ND for a week to build a vmware cluster
@MichaelHampton We can fight over it, if you want.
@SpacemanSpiff a week!!
@Chopper3 I've not got any complaints. I've always been prone to the occasional bad spell, you get used to it. God knows lots of people have it much worse than me
14:29
@SpacemanSpiff Where in chicago are you?
@Goatmale Ha, I'm not quite that desperate for an upgrade. :)
Yeah, i think I'm going to shoot myself
@Goatmale - I live in villa park, work in hinsdale
I just got a $2000 budget to purchase something IT. anyone wanna help me spend it?
@NickM. Send me a check, and I'll send you my junkbox.
@NickM. What do you need/do?
You can get two wi-spys for that
14:30
@SpacemanSpiff perfect.. i'm in elmhurst. literally down the street.
@NickM. Get a hot tub
3
@MDMarra the pony was good
no shit
haha
I could use a hot tub
Yeah, ever been to Fitz's Pub?
14:31
@Chopper3 I think everyone in the other departments would get envious if I got a hot tub
yes, i got plasterd off my ass there last wednesday
@NickM. Oh, buy me @ewwhite's server!
in the data centre I mean
given we are all men in the office... i don't know what kind of message that would be sending out
@SpacemanSpiff I live above there!
14:31
@NickM what they don't know won't hurt them. Or if they find out, rent it out
ewwhite has a server for sell? im actually looking to buy a server with the money
department prize - a day in the hot tub
@NickM. It's...a bit of a beast.
@tombull89 what are the specs
well then if you saw a 5'8" brown haired guy carrying a nicely endowed blonde girl fall on his ass and scrape up his elbow last wednesday around 12:30AM, that would be me
14:32
I need something with hardware raid and sas or SSD drives
Wow. MDmarra was even faster with a comment.
@SpacemanSpiff quite the gentleman you are
@Hennes I'm fast as fuck
2
heading to the office, back in a bit
@ewwhite whats the specs of that server your selling?
14:36
get one of those massage chairs
or atleast that thing you can put on your office chair and get massage
a massage chair sounds good right now. Not quite as good as the hot tub mind you
@RobM helppppppppppp
turns out the EMC VNX requires active twinax
does the switch have to support active aswell?
Don't know, sorry.
£2000? Excellent. You can buy two of these:
We use Equallogic SANs here
I think the real question is how come @tombull89 had that link lined up ready to go
@RobM I went through the chat room history.
does anyone here know if a switch cares if the twinax is active or passive?
;-)
@tombull89 Yeah. Right.
14:43
@RobM That's not in everyone's xmas list?
I'm sure at least one person in here will be getting the lube plus a lifetime's supply of new socks...
isnt that kinda expensive for lube though?
1200$
I mean i know KY jelly is like 7-8$
@NickM. 55 gallons
GALLONS
So, running the search indexer on a SharePoint server... it's normal for the CPU to max out when you do that, right?
GALLONS
@HopelessN00b yes
14:45
but given i would be buying in bulk.. wouldnt I get a better deal than that?
@HopelessN00b That's why a lot of people have a dedicated front-end server just for search that doesn't participate in servicing user traffic
i.e. have a front end server just for search that isn't part of your farm's load balancing scheme
Or, just deal with it haha
@MDMarra Thank you. This freaking place. They run the search indexer every 10 minutes and wonder why SharePoint's slow. The crazy, it burns.
how many servers do you have in the farm @MDMarra
for big sharepoint sites you need to have search on its own server, yeah
Here? just 1 and we index overnight (plus a SQL server)
14:47
@MDMarra I mean the whole company
@MDMarra Right, the fscking normal time to run the indexer.
not limited to sharepoint
$LastJob 1 SQL server and 3 frontends with 1 dedicated to various jobs (including search)
@NickM. Oh, um probably at least 100
damn
you make me feel so little
2
heh
We also have a bunch of remote sites across the country each with 5 servers
so that pads the total
even though they're just DCs and NAS storage
14:49
We have 70 servers here. Keeps me busy enough
I was responsible for ~70 at my last job
im only at about 15-20 at the moment
Here, only 12ish
hey @MDMarra.
14:50
What's that I hear?
...you winning?
that's right.
It is not how big your server count is, it is how you use them
suck it
That suck it was directed at @Basil, not you, @KyleBrandt - but you can both suck it anyway
@KyleBrandt I have several thousand servers, but I mostly use them to hold doors open and as ballast.
14:53
@Basil I read that quickly and thought you said "and as a ballsack"
@KyleBrandt are you guys still running out of Oregon?
Don't star my typos during the edit period, you numbnuts

@Basil in the winter you should use them to heat up the house

@Goatmale ya. @KyleBrandt can expand more. He's the lead sysadmin for SE

I've been staring at this performance graph "loading" for 5 minutes now.

Um, so another high-rep user just commented on a post I made about sites and services saying that you don't have to create site links and that the KCC and ISTG will just figure it out automatically. Has anyone else heard of this?
0
A: Map VPN clients to AD site

MDMarraThis is a little tricky for a couple of reasons. First, let me outline how you make the sites, then I'll explain why it's tricky. To make the site: Create a site object for each physical site that you have that has a DC in it. Create subnet objects for all of them based on their IP space (if y...

@Chopper3 that's ... different

@NickM. More context
DNS forwarders?
@MDMarra He's wrong. If you want to control the DCs to which a computer or a user authenticates, you need to configure sites, subnets, site links...
@RyanRies Ya, I didn't think sites and services would function at all without proper site links in place
15:12
@MDMarra yes sorry. On a windows 2008 Server acting as a DNS server
I think he's confusing site links with bridgeheads
@MDMarra If the auto site linker thiny is turned on, then you don't have to create site links manually. It's on by default, but there were plenty of issues with it in previous versions of Server, especially with slow inter-site links. So many organizations disabled it.

Auto site coverage?
ghhaggadhgdagh
15:14
@TomO'Connor I was thinking about that one last night. All the way back in May that was asked.
I see we have a lot of windows fans here. May I remind that even Microsoft themselves has had a hard time keeping windows servers secure, as clearly shown in Hotmail example ? They still use FreeBSD partially. — Tuncay GöncüoÄŸlu 7 mins ago
If that's what you were thinking about, that's still not going to absolve you of the need to organize your networks into sites and subnets
@MDMarra - my comment to Tuncay - his joke aside his answer sucked balls
@MDMarra Oh, Joe mentions it in his comment, the ISTG system generates site links so long as it's enabled
15:16
It does?
Do they show up in sites and services
Why don't I know about this
How does it determine link cost and replication interval without an explicitly defined link object?
Actually this whole site is pretty freaking awesome.
@tombull89 I wonder what the range on that bugger is like.
Must not be much. The 2.4GHz spectrum is quite polluted, and a LiPoly batter isn't going to last very long compared to a gas powered engine.
@TheCleaner that tuncay bloke is on my list of today's cuntbutlers.

Does it show that its been a long week and I'm out of patience with fuckwits?

@tombull89 I'm sure as hell not doing it.
You need rep to chat?
15:41
@TomO'Connor just 20.
I can't upvote locked posts! So sad.
I just got a quote from Racktop/Brickstor for a ZFS array/appliance.
@TomO'Connor 20 network-wide
That's quite an expensive product.
15:43
@ewwhite For that price, they could at least throw in some disks.
That's not including disks?!
8 x 1TB SAS disks.
with a spare... and some other shit,
Hm, didn't see those listed on the quote.
15:44
BrickStor Dual 10Gb Ethernet Adapter - Direct Attach SFP+ with 3m cables - Cisco Compatible 8 x 1TB SAS 6Gb/s 7200RPM Data Drive
1TB SAS 6Gb/s 7200RPM Data Drive for Hot Spare
BrickStor Storage Brick
2U 12 x 3.5"Bay Dual Controller
Hot Swappable Fans (Redundant)
Hot Swappable Power Supplies (Redundant) 3 x 24Gbs SAS Ports per controller
Rack Rails Kit
BrickStor Storage Bundle - Extreme Cache Pack
ZIL= 2 x 8GB SAS Hybrid RAM
Drive SLC SSD backed - 80,000 Write IOPS (Write Cache) L2ARC = 200GB SAS SSD (Read Cache)
192GB cache?
That's 192GB RAM.
why do you need 192GB of RAM in a storage array?
I assumed that was for cache
this is a Nexenta box.
15:45
why the fuck is it so expensive
Our arrays have over 1TB of cache
so in ZFS-land, your RAM is your first-level read cache. And your second-tier of read cache is an array of RAID-0 SSD's
"BrickStor Titanium serves as a high performance mid-level ZFS storage appliance." OK, now let's see the enterprise quote.
But I can't for the life of me see why this is $50k.
I thought SSDs were used as a ZIL, which was for write caching. Is that wrong?
15:46
We use Nimble arrays, 10Gb ethernet service, first write goes to flash cache, hot blocks go to SSD, cold blocks go to SATA
Or am I confusing ZIL and L2ARC
Or am I just making shit up
It's enterprisy, so it's a minimum of $50k
@MDMarra You need a special SSD for ZIL use... low-latency or RAM based
ah, I see
but this is really a 2U server with 2 X5645 CPU's, 12 drive bays and 9 1TB SAS disks. The SSD's in use are expensive, so they add another $9k.
but still...
15:48
You're paying for integration I guess
I can build this on an HP DL380 for $15k
with STEC SSD's.
so do it
Ya dude, that quote is bananas
I'm going to call and make sure it's not for TWO nodes...
I'll sell you my fully popped CX3 for that 50k :p
15:49
(there's no real HA in Nexenta land)
Is this one single node or an HA setup?
(just kidding)
Reply: Single node.
fuck.
@ewwhite time to start opening a business that sells DL380s
@Iain why did you delete that guy's answer?
Now he doesn't suffer the sting of those downvotes
15:51
@MDMarra because it'll save us having to handle all the future flags for naa, not constructive etc
I didn't think that just being a bad answer was grounds for deletion
That guy deserves to have a -11 listed in his profile
@JoelESalas I'd defend you, except the SSD is just masking the shitty OS X I/O scheduler, not solving the problem :P
@MDMarra why not - at -11 it serves no purpose
Because that question has the potential to draw a lot of traffic, and having that question locked at -11 will show future visitors that the community doesn't think that Windows is an inherently bad platform and it servers as a warning to anyone else that wants to make an answer like that
Plus, the dude really deserves the negative rep there
YOu're just being vindictive
15:54
@MDMarra how bad are we talking?
@voretaq7 -11 bad
