hey guys
hola
Can I get one more nail please...
I purchased a new Lenovo T430 with Windows 7. I upgraded it to Windows 8. Someone spilled juice on my laptop and Lenovo is not covering it under warranty. The repair would cost me quite a fortune.

Q: How do I send a newsletter to 2000 emails on a shared server?

BogdanConsider this scenario: I'm running Magento 1.4 Community Edition I have a newsletter that I'm sending out 2 times per week My list has 2000 subscribers I'm on a shared hosting plan (linux on apache 2.2 with Cpanel) My hosting provider limits me to 6 emails/minute How can I send 2000 emails x...

@vulcanraven ok?
14:16
Now, I found a very good dead on Dell laptop without OS. Can I use my Lenovo HDD as is if I purchase Dell?
probably not
It most likely won't boot unless the storage controllers are nearly identical
Not without wiping it.
If you're giving up on your Lenovo, you should just try and fix it yourself
Get a jeweler's screwdriver set for like $15
14:17
Can I recover Lenovo's recovery partition to restore Windows 7 on dell machine and activate?
Get two bottles of 97% isopropyl rubbing alcobol for $4
@MDMarra Let's get that closed so we tell that "off topic belongs on ServerFault" asshole that crap belongs on SO with all the shit, and not on ServerFault.
Take the laptop apart piece by piece, taking pictures along the way so you can put it back together
Soak the motherboard in the alcohol and let it sit overnight
then. let it dry for 6 hours and put it back together
@vulcanraven: you should, unless the drive is hosed
you can soak the keyboard and trackpad this way as well if they're sticky
14:18
A hard drive is a hard drive is a hard drive
but you may have some other issues
Dan
Dan
@MDMarra Forgive my ignorance, what's this step for?
OH, you want to boot the old wassname
the hard drive is saved
@JourneymanGeek I think he wants to boot the Lenovo disk in the Dell machine.
@JourneymanGeek Like none of the drivers working
14:18
@Dan: I'd guess to try to fix the old system
@Dan Eats all of the particles off the board
@Dan If something sticky like juice was spilled on it, the alcohol will dissolve it without damaging the board
then no ;p
@Dan washing/cleaning the juice off the mobo
Dan
Dan
@MDMarra Gotchya
14:19
my bad
Also, if the recovery partition is a Lenovo one, it likely won't work in a Dell laptop
I talked to Lenovo repair center in Canada. They said if mobo is damaged they would not cover under warranty
Isopropyl is awesome stuff... cleans without damage to most stuff, used to love using it back in my engineer days of a pharma company
OEM installs/restores are usually keyed to an identifier embedded in the BIOS, which your new laptop wont have
@Dan If you don't like the guy asking for help, you suggest saline solution, incidentally.
14:20
@HopelessN00b Thermite.
@vulcanraven Follow the steps that I listed to fix it yourself
the Recovery partition is NTFS.
@vulcanraven ...what else would it be?
@tombull89 No one's that dumb. But I have been able to convince twits to wash their electronics in saline.
@MDMarra FAT32 of course!
14:20
I mean its not exclusive for Lenovo?
exFat?
@vulcanraven Yes, it is.
@vulcanraven You misunderstand what I'm saying
If the recovery partition was pre-configured by Lenovo, the installation that it will restore to your main partition is likely keyed to an identifier in your BIOS
@vulcanraven The filesystem may work on other laptops, the Windows install and serial will not.
Meaning that it will either fail to install or fail to activate on new hardware
Dan
Dan
@HopelessN00b I thought saline was pretty inert
14:22
So can I ask Microsoft to issue me an OEM independent copy of Windows 7 on behalf of the one came with Lenovo?
@Dan salt will corrode metal
@vulcanraven You can ask them for a million dollars if you want. You probably won't get either
Dan
Dan
@MDMarra Haha, yes, I do know that
I'm stupid today
2
(Owns a VW, knows everything about corrosion)
I wish:
The whole point of an OEM license is that Microsoft offloads the support to an OEM like Lenovo or Dell. That's why they're so much cheaper than reltail licenses

Q: How can I dual boot my Windows 7 PC with Mac OS X Mountain Lion

Delinquent MenaceI tried to dual boot Mac OS X Mountain Lion with Windows 7 on my laptop with a series of tools, Hackintosh, iATKOS, Unibeast but failed in all of my attempts. Either the installation fails or I receive boot0 error. Please help I really need it, can't afford to buy a Mac for time being :( My conf...

14:23
If you call MS with an OEM problem, they'll politely hang up on you 99% of the time
@vulcanraven Why don't you just take an hour to take your laptop apart like I just mentioned and soak the board in alcohol
It's under $20 worth of supplies to do and there are many guides online to disassembling laptops if you've never done it
@MDMarra, you are not gonna believe what happened to my laptop
@vulcanraven You spilled juice on it
You already said
mobo had a short circuit. I don't understand how my hard drive is not affected.
@vulcanraven Uh, your hard drive isn't embedded in the mother board?
Dan
Dan
@vulcanraven Because it's not on the motherboard?
14:26
Plus, how do you know it short circuited?
Dan
Dan
@BrentPabst It's alive and hiding in a burger van at some poor womans house
@Dan No that sounds like a pedo in a white VW bus...
Well, the hard disk may be dead, you never know.
@vulcanraven A short circuit just means that two electrical leads on the motherboard that shouldn't have conductivity between the two do have conductivity. This usually leads to it not powering up or behaving very strangely. It has nothing to do with the hard drive. It also almost never causes permanent damage unless some of the charging circuits are shorted and it causes an actual spark/burn/fire
Trust me, in another life I was a hardware tech. I saved probably well over 100 laptops that were spilled on and had shorts with what I just told you to do
Dan
Dan
@BrentPabst Thanks mate
14:28
In addition to what @BrentPabst said, if you want OSX without the obscene EULA and crappy "features," you can dual boot Windows with something called Linux instead. It's a lot like OSX, except that it works. — HopelessN00b 25 secs ago
If you want to throw your money away at another laptop and wrestle with Dell/Lenovo about support, that's your decision, but it seems like a waste of time and effort when what I'm suggesting has an incredibly high success rate
Dan
Dan
@MDMarra I've not physically exploded anything in months and months
@HopelessN00b Yea, I see its gone now!
@Dan Ha ha, no problem buddy!
@Dan That tends to happen after you get married.
yeah but the short circuit was severe and my laptop is damaged. I used circuit tested, spent some time with it but its dead.. and I might have damaged some IC while I was on it
14:29
Alright, got my dig against of the day in against crApple, time to get to wok, mbe.
@HopelessN00b Deleted by the time I clicked on it. I think you got mod'd
@ScottPack Wow... just yea...
In addition to what @BrentPabst said, if you want OSX without the obscene EULA and crappy "features," you can dual boot Windows with something called Linux instead. It's a lot like OSX, except that it works.
@Dan I did actually set a laptop on fire once. I forgot to take the battery out and I tried to start desoldering the DC power jack. I learned that lesson quickly :p
14:29
@MDMarra, its a piece of trash. I took it to a hardware store and the genius there also declared it trash.
"its time to move on"
Dan
Dan
@MDMarra I once accidentally put a power cord into/onto a USB socket. It didn't break anything but fuck me did it spark
@vulcanraven So what was your question then?
@vulcanraven If you take people like that at face value, you're going to get fucked your whole life
Dan
Dan
@vulcanraven Oxymoron alert
@vulcanraven Did they actually disassemble the laptop and inspect it when you brought it there?
14:30
@vulcanraven what was the name of the store?
@vulcanraven Great, so throw it out and move on, then. Next question?
@tombull89 The Apple Store ;)
@Dan nice
@Dan, yeah first I did some experiments on my own. Then I took it to the hardware store and he checked it and told me its damaged.
Blah, whats up with all of the recommendation questions today??
Dan
Dan
14:34
@vulcanraven Damaged maybe, but potentially fixable
@Dan It's not dead until the fat lady sits on it
Dan
Dan
@BrentPabst She's such a bitch
@vulcanraven Unless that person actually did what I said and cleaned the board off (which would have taken over 24 hours between cleaning and drying), they're lying to you
@Dan Ha, I date a larger girl who sings opera, how stereotypical is that?
@BrentPabst ...and she sues you for her medical bills to have the RAID controller card surgically removed from her colon. :(
Dan
Dan
14:36
@BrentPabst Nothign wrong with that
@Dan Nope as long as she doesn't sing to me, damn loud!
@HopelessN00b At least her cheeks are redundant!
Dan
Dan
Whoops, just nearly expanded SAN volume by a full 2.7TB instead of the 100GB I wanted
That would have been interesting
Dan
Dan
@BrentPabst Bad is what it would have been :D
shrinking volumes is so fun
since it doesn't even work I mean
SAN copy etc.. blarrrgh
14:40
@pauska used to have a Dell MD3000i and it could shrink if you paid the extra 10k to license the feature
for an iSCSI device the MD3000i was actually pretty kick ass
Dan
Dan
I never have the guts to shrnk volumes
@BrentPabst huh. how would the host know that the volume shrank?
Dan
Dan
If I really fucked up I'd create a new volume, copy data and trash the old one
@pauska Rescan?
or maybe it can be done offline by reading used blocks.. but that sounds very, very dangerous
Dan
Dan
You can shrink
But yeah, I wouldn't
14:41
@Dan in flight? I don't think so
Dan
Dan
Ever
neither would I
@pauska Not sure, never really looked into it, but Windows could see the "physical" disk on the SAN, assuming it figured it out somehow
Dan
Dan
@pauska I think some will let you. Pretty sure the P4000 will
@MDMarra, of course its a best case scenario if I get lucky and my Lenovo get repaired without spending lot of bucks. But if its not the option, can I use the Windows 7 OS (preinstalled in Lenovo) on Dell laptop and then run Windows 8 upgrade which I purchased via Windows 8 upgrade offer, OR would I have to purchase Windows 8 for Dell separately?
14:41
I know I have shrunk windows volumes before, its not too bad
only to the right of the last write though
If you extend it, but don't rescan on the host. Then you realize you fucked up and shrink it on the SAN before the host knows it was ever a different size, you should be ok
I have every possible license on our VNX, and there is no shrink option there..
Dan
Dan
Not sure if this MSA doesn't
Ha ha ha ha ha

Q: How and why I'm getting script injection on my header part of the index file on Wordpress

DallalI'm having this issue where I always get script injection on my header file of the Wordpress theme. So what happen is that I have to always check my source code everyday to see if there have been injected by some hacker and just remove it from the code myself. What I have done to prevent this ...

Looking forward to the replies on that one ^^^
the bloody mac server here keeps falling bloody over. If its not careful, its going to find itself getting a preventative maintenance with a hammer
14:44
So what happen is that I have to always check my source code everyday to see if there have been injected by some hacker and just remove it from the code myself.
oh my
Oh. My. God.
@RobM As long as its a hammer with rounded corners
@vulcanraven According to the terms of the license, no. That OEM Windows license is not transferable. If you can convince someone at microsoft to issue you a different key, then maybe. But honestly, I'd say your chances are slim

Aww, @Iain put it out of its misery ;)
@vulcanraven This has been answered a few times already by a few different people. Are you trolling, or hoping that if you ask the question enough times, you'll get a different answer?
Dan
Dan
@MDMarra That book should be here today :)
Oh nice
Mine is missing
@BrentPabst A pleasure
A coworker took it on his flight to Liberia and now he won't give it back :(
14:48
@Iain Gotta admit, that one was just nuts...
Dan
Dan
@MDMarra Kidney punch
Hah, I actually just haven't asked for it back yet
@BrentPabst yep
@MDMarra, thanks. So the Windows 7 licesnse belongs OEM. How about Windows 8 upgrade which I got for $40 from Microsoft. Is it also associated with OEM now? Can I use it if I buy Dell with Windows 7?
@vulcanraven You should really call Microsoft about this, at this point.
This room isn't for live support and we're sysadmins, not license VARs
14:49
@vulcanraven I second @MDMarra's statement
That's a question for Microsoft, because the answer may vary depending on where you live, and none of us are experts in licence details
@vulcanraven We hang out here to pass the time at work and trade stories and occasionally collaborate on things. Not to be free tech support.
Thanks for your time guys.
@MDMarra Oh, so I cant haz teh codez?
If you'd like to continue hanging out, that's fine. We even occasionally ask each other for help on stuff, but if all you're doing is asking for help over and over in this chat, you're doing it wrong
14:50
What? This isn't free tech support? Somebody LIED to me!
@BrentPabst NO CODEZ
@MDMarra I CAN'T FIND MY WINKEY. HLEP!
@pauska Dude thats a whole different problem...
Dan
Dan
@HopelessN00b Currently building a VM and it still tries to PXE boot from an "unconnected" network card. Glad we had that conversation last week :D
So I've applied for a job on the dark side...
14:52
@MDMarra, I was just trying to figure out would it be a good idea to buy Dell. Thanks for your help. :-)
@BrentPabst that would be Linux for you ?
Program Manager for one of our product suites here
@Iain Ha ha, yea thats about right too though
@pauska Worse. WHERE IS MY ANY KEY?
HOW DO I LAMPS MY SERVER? I have Virtualbox installed on Windows on an MacBook Pro with ubuntu in a VM and my ip is 127.0.0.1 can I be hacked?
@Dan Heh, yeah, happy to learn something new.
14:53
So glad my week ends at 12p tomorrow
praise jesus!
@BrentPabst Yeah, that's what they're telling me too. I'll give odds I still get calls on Thanksgiving, though. :/
@HopelessN00b Yea, that is one benefit to not being on the primary on-call team anymore
My on-call rotation falls on christmas and new years

Q: How to delete domain user profile from a computer?

zladuricI'm wondering how to safely remove a domain user profile from a computer that is a part of a domain. I don't want to delete the account from the domain itself, I just need to remove the profile from this computer, to do some cleanup. I'm currently on a Vista Business computer, but we also have W...

@MDMarra Sounds like a hospital shift
Dan
Dan
14:56
I was ripped off!
Everyone's telling me that it's super rare to get any calls at either time though
@BrentPabst nah, standard business
But since we're closed those days, I shouldnt be getting any calls
Still have to carry a second fucking phone around though
Yea, getting my new company phone tomorrow...
I really like the deal they have worked out with Verizon here though
hey peoples! hope everyones ok today :)
everyone gets a phone after 90 days, contract is in your name so it transfers when you leave but they pick up the bill while you are employed
@BrentPabst We have two phones that get cycled to the on-call and on-deck people
@KirstyHarris hey
14:58
well this is a new one. The new amazing CLOUD backup system my boss wants to try on our mac server/san causes the whole fucking server to fall over the moment you try and run the backup software. Which is really confusing because I thought the cloud was magic and never crashed ever because it was made out of unicorn farts.
@MDMarra Jeez, we just have a bitchin PBX :)
Maybe the backup software isn't cloudy enough
I really can't decide.. winphone8 or samsung sgs3
@pauska My HTC Windows Phone 8X arrives tomorrow
@pauska Samsung.
14:58
I'll let you know what I think
@pauska Metro. For real. You are seriously considering a winphone?
@BrentPabst That would be awesome
loves his One V
@BrentPabst Everything here is all Cisco voip. We do the phone rotation because it also has text/email alerts from orion delivered to it and people don't want those sent to their personal phones
14:59
I had a HTC Desire once (plus a ton of HTC winphones), they were all great
It's actually pretty laid back here about after-hours shit breaking
@pauska Not like this...
I've never gotten a call about anything being broken unless I was on call
Yea, its replacing my HTC Arrive
yea, on call just sucks though, do they have on call pay?
@MichaelHampton I know that Metro (or any touch interface) on a PC without touch sucks
we are talking about a phone here though
every single person I've talked to who's ever touched a win7.5 or win8 phone loved it
15:00
@BrentPabst Nope, but we're also not expected to be a 24/7 responder
@pauska I suppose that's true. Though now you have talked to someone who hated it.
If I'm asleep, I leave the on call phone in the other room and don't get out of bed if i hear it
in addition to us being extremely MS biased at $job with lync and sharepoint and onenote and what not
I'm happy with my 7.5 device, im not a big app hog so that whole thing doesn't bother me, mainly e-mail calls and text
It's really either for "oh shit, something's broken and I'm still awake" or "there's an after hours release you need to coordinate with the devs"
15:01
yeah I don't really care about apps unless the really vital ones (like bus routes etc)
@MDMarra makes sense
Of all the people I know, one person has a WP8 phone, one of the early Nokia models.
@BrentPabst one thing though.. why not the lumia 920?
@BrentPabst And there are 7 of us in the rotation and you get 2 weeks on deck then 2 weeks on call, then nothing for like 3 months. After xmas, I won't have it again until like march/april
@BrentPabst Team, hah! Wouldn't that be nice.
15:02
@tombull89 that is not w8
nokia's wp8 phones aren't out yet (920 and 820)
@pauska Is it not? It looked metro-ey
@pauska The 920 is actually heavier and thicker... and the 920 wasn't available for Verizon
@tombull89 same GUI, different engine (wp8 runs NT)
Scratch that, that was december last year. Bloody hell.
@tombull89 You're prob thinking of Win 7 phones, which have live tiles
15:02
at least not yet
I did see something the other day on the twitters that some Nokia devices could be upgraded to WP8 though
@BrentPabst yeah, it's very heavy and all that, but wireless charging man.. how cool is it to just put you phone on top of a speaker and have it charge + stream music automatically
god i am hating WP right now
@KirstyHarris wordpress or windows phone
@BrentPabst !!
well fuck me twice
15:04
@KirstyHarris eh, I've got a love/hate relationship with Wordpress.
@pauska Hells yeah!
sorry wordpress lol
@RobM Problem is server. Server needs be made into a cloud before it will be cloud-compatible.
see i hate it atm, its not doing what i want it to do,.....bloody thing
so yes, im actually looking forward to getting this thing tomorrow, should be pretty cool
15:05
I don't get all the wordpress disrespect. It's a perfectly acceptable remote command shell AND it comes with a free blog plugin.
u follow something and assume it works... :P
@RobM huh? click click whirr oh.
oh no, i usually love it till i want something else... and its not working,... then i throw a paddy as i cant work out whats wrong ha!
have you tried asking on wordpress.stackexchange.com?
@BrentPabst Wireless charging, eh? Gonna tell the CIO I need that. I'll call it "cloud charging" to make sure he's on board.
2
15:08
@HopelessN00b Priceless...
yh i just asked... but when i did what the guy told me it didnt work so ... im stumped ha
lol. I rather like wordpress, mainly cause it was the first thing I EVER set up
lol i like it, i actually love it.. but this superfish menu has been the bain of my lift
15:09
Installing WP, couple of plugins and a basic theme is good enough for me. If I start putting too many plugins on it or want to write my own theme I lose the will to live fairly quickly.
lol i have @tombull89
i want to write my own themes thou
but this one thing has annoyed the hell outta me...
I have written WP plugins. But I'm pretty much done with PHP at this point. What a total crap language...
Fuuuuuuuuuuck! OK, this old network admin is officially pissing me off.

You know what becomes useless when none of your network devices have time servers or time zones set? All your fucking network logs. >:/
@MichaelHampton But the facey spaces still uses the PHPs
15:11
@BrentPabst Facebook? Gawd, that site is damn near unusable now; they went WAY overboard with the AJAX...
@MichaelHampton Ha, yea a bit, they are aiming for a SPA (Single Page Application) design with support for HTML5 Offline Mode
@MichaelHampton Indeed, the new messaging/inbox thing is a bit...too much. I'm Facebookin in ur computer, nommin all ur rams.
Sure, if you want to go all HTML5 and AJAX, fine, but FUCKING TEST IT FIRST. DevOps.
@MichaelHampton @tombull89 Yea, the downside to SPAs... requires the app to run completely in the browser and rely on it to balloon to handle the memory requirements.
@HopelessN00b I think we need to put together a wireless charging pad in the shape of a cloud and call it the "Cloud Pad"
15:15
it would sell like crazy
We would probably get sued for selling a tablet that wasn't a tablet
@BrentPabst no LTE?? :(
@pauska On what?
@BrentPabst No shit. But I'm sure Apple would sue the shit out of us once it started making money, the name being an obvious rip off of their iPad and iCloud. :(
oh but we could combine it and it would be totally new and magical the new "iCloud iPad"
15:18
@BrentPabst Ugh. Kill all the fucking lawyers. Seriously, solve 90% of the world's problems, right there.
@BrentPabst the 8X
it looks like the LTE models are branded against US carries
man how I hate stuff like that
@pauska Looks like LTE to me... engadget.com/2012/09/19/…
@pauska and Verizon shows LTE support on their site... verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/…
not sure about other carriers though
but I don't live in US
I want a non hijacked model with global LTE support
:|
@pauska Oh well shit, yea not sure then my friend
Although, I do love that its on Verizon's LTE and CDMA but will also have a GSM chip/antenna which will be great for when I have to travel to Malaysia
@pauska Although that does seems strange since all of the antennas are on-board... I wonder if the spectrum needed overseas is supported
Alright well I actually need to go do some work, writing stupid freaking UI test scripts
the real question is, are you going to keep it in a sock?
15:32
@BrentPabst I guess it's spectrum diferences.. the global model doesn't have wireless charging either
Isn't a Microsoft server product with "Express" in its name only meant to be used for development?
nope
SQL Server Express can be used for live work, for example.
It just has limits
which one you dealing with?
if something is licenced via MSDN then its dev only, no matter what it says, IIRC
Dan
Dan
15:37
@MDMarra Jesus, this book is massive
Dan
Dan
@MichaelHampton Rob is right, loads of software comes with a distribution of SQL Express
@RobM There's nothing to physically stop you using it in production though...is there?
@Dan Ya, lots of info
@Dan True enough, but I mean someone using it alone, without such software it was bundled with?
Dan
Dan
15:38
@tombull89 The software is exactly the same as retail, it's just licensing
@tombull89 no I don't think there is. If you download SQL Enterprise from MSDN then that's SQL enterprise
Dan
Dan
@MichaelHampton Totally legit, 100%
@MichaelHampton yes, iirc its free to use
@Dan I got it when I was in an iSCSI environment, so I skipped the 100 pages on FC, for example

This guy is totally fucked
@mdmarra that's what the graffiti on the men's room wall says about you, anyway

truth
@MDMarra dammit. I was hoping he was under 13 he'd be kicked off the network.
@Dan How much did you pay for it?
Dan
Dan
@tombull89 £20
@MDMarra You'd have to be 18 to try to run your company off of free advice from the interwebs. An older dumbass would know better.
I just offered my services to him
I hope he emails me
Hey @voretaq7 I have sudden need of a NFS server with a bunch of space. If I use this x3850 that I have lying around and put freebsd on it do I have any chance of using the fusionio card?
15:50
@HopelessN00b Were you around when that kid asked for shopping on server hosting? I think his parents were going to stump up $10,000/month for up to a year for him to build the next facebook, or something.
@tombull89 No, I think I would remember something like that.
@MDMarra You want to work for a clueless teenager like that guy? May God have mercy on your soul, or something.
@HopelessN00b I'll work for anyone that pays me what I ask them to.
Every man has their price, you just need to factor the cluelessness into that price
@MDMarra Good point. I'd work for him for $1,000 an hour too. :)
Can't find the question, I suspect it was deleted.
Dan
Dan
@tombull89 I thought that was just in chat
Or was that another :D
