and the elbow album is pretty good too chopper, thanks
@pauska: Doesn't he just want a high metric line in the non-deafult interfaces?
@pauska I'm going to hold off on parsing that question until I get some more coffee. I'm pretty sure it can only end in tears.
@SmallClanger but operating systems doesnt blindly round-robin their interfaces
you dont get to use a secondary (alias) ip unless you specifiy it to do so via a tcp/ip bind
True, I'm thinking in routing terms, but if he's only got one NIC, the source IP should always be the primary IP...
the subinterfaces are on a different network
uhm.. im just going to step away from that one
13:04
@pauska that's fucked up, 3 DGs?
looks like it
trying to multi home without the proper infrastructure (as in BGP)
looks like he threw up on his keyboard
How many malware seem to be going around that in some way disable the ability to run EXE files?
@#%!! second call we've had in a couple days that apparently something is disabling exe files.
every single one of those fake antivirus malwares
invalid image or some such !@#%
13:11
@BartSilverstrim It's a registry edit to fix
But the machine should still be wiped
I was spoiled by the number of systems we're running with Deep Freeze.
wipe it, or safe boot with networking with anti-malware
I'm fearing just fixing the laptops. I recommended wipe and restore because if it did that, no telling what else is hidden.
Where the heck do people learn IP these days?
13:14
"for dummies" boosk
@BartSilverstrim I recommend a repartition now as well. I've been seeing enough Torpig/Mebroot infections that it's becoming standard practice.
When I took some classes in high school one of them was "Configuring TCP/IP". They still taught classed routing, so they were behind the times a bit, but overall not too bad.
@BartSilverstrim @packs You may also consider putting a SRP inplace to block executables from within a users profile.
@RobertMoir I gotta believe even the Dummies books have correct information like "a computer has only one default gateway" (excepting very particular situations).
This will block lots of crapware that we see using Flash/Java/Reader exploits
13:15
@jscott SRP? Sounds like one of those Windows things.
Software Restriction Policy
Ah, power generating station
hmmm actually you have a point there...
@jscott We're a big residential campus. So we don't manage the vast majority of systems on our network, and those are usually the ones that have the problems.
@packs Gotcha, your students provide their own computers. :)
13:18
@jscott And research labs, etc. You k-12 guys have it easy :)
@packs Outside of being woefully under-staffed, sure, it's alright. :)
We just might have to look at SRP given the sudden spike in infections apparently occurring.
The k-12 sector also gets the wonderful WE HAVE TO RUN THIS PROGRAM directives...and the software is shovelware niche crap that requires administrative access to parts of the filesystem and/or registry to work.
@#%!!
Install it and a month later find out it's hardly being used. :-/
@BartSilverstrim I'm right there with you on that. We package all our software (even the spec-ed stuff) to work as non-admin. PitA, but worth it.
@BartSilverstrim I can relate to that
@BartSilverstrim We've implemented software metering to monitor useage. Because of budget cuts across-the-board, we're reporting these stats to the Admin Cabinets and letting them make the call on what software "needs" to be purchased.
13:21
It's horrible at times. I've had to compromise security so many times on systems...now we get calls because people don't know how it happened, but now things don't work quite right, and there's suddenly new icons showing up or warnings from the virus thingy...and it's rampant.
Deep Freeze really mitigated the problem. We could give virtually admin access on machines, and a reboot fixes it. But now the trend is for more people wanting laptops. Even though in many cases they aren't going anywhere with them. And we couldn't use deep freeze on them for the cases where they did take them home or out for some reason or they lost work. Now...infections.
@BartSilverstrim You don't use Offline-Files/CSC?
For your mobile users?
When I started here, the group "Domain Users" was a member of the local Administrators group on all computers (except servers). It was a freaking mess.
I just got back. I realise I'm behind, but I have to throw out the fact that I love cracked. Awesome site.
@jscott: No, haven't used it out of fear for how much is being synced. We think there are wireless nodes being overloaded and some logins take forever to complete as they compare and copy. We've been cutting any profiles from people that manage to refuse to keep files on a network home directory because of even profile sync issues.
dont use offline files against dfs shares btw
it blows
:|
13:36
@pauska Why?
More or less the users with full laptop use are given the laptops as their own little kingdom and are told to save files that they want to have backed up to their home directory. Sometimes they even do that.
@BartSilverstrim I hear ya, that's how it was here.
Until the new IT director came in, and had his notebook drive die ...
just reading this; bbc.co.uk/news/uk-12762333; seventy thousand! ffs!
Sometimes I wish we had more of the almost worst-case scenarios occur to drive points home with users so they'd listen. But I suppose the fact that those scenarios don't happen is a testament to the philosophy of "good enough." I'm tired of waging that fight.
For our 1-to-1 mobile users, we encourage the initial sync to be done on-the-wire.
13:41
We do too if they're using profiles. Although once we get a call about "it's taking too long..." or "Hangs on log off..." we cut the profile.
@MarkM it cant determine site properly
Then we get the calls about "why isn't this here when I log into this desktop?" :-(
@MarkM: it's like it instantly believes that the master is offline, and then switches over to another dfs member
@chopper3: Probably a sensationalized number.
With CSC + folder redirection, logon times aren't terrible.... We also encourage the heavy disk-space users to store big files (Video-editing, 3D-modeling, etc) on dedicated network drives.
13:42
@Chopper3 Time to get the scissors out..
@pauska Ah, that sucks
@jscott: So you're having it more or less try syncing up as it can on the network, otherwise use local copies on the notebook.
@pauska It's OK with just namespaces and no replication though?
"I am having trouble sending and replying to emails. I have been receiving email warning that my mailbox is full." -- hmmm. You know, for being teachers, some people really aren't that bright.
@Holocryptic What's the phrase? Those who can't do, teach?
13:45
Aye
@BartSilverstrim Yes. With redirection, if you're on the network, you doesn't need to pull down your entire profile each logon. Documents is good candidate for redirection.... With 7, it seems like sync performance is even better than XP.
Ya dude, people are generally stupid
"I don't know what happened... It said to click on the box to win a million dollars. Now whenever I open up my internet, all I get is naked women sites."
@MarkM Do you need to qualify that using "with money"?
13:48
fair enough
fixed
@jscott: Our other problem appears to be bandwidth. At least, I think that's what's happening. Something is definitely going on with the wireless. These @#% laptops encounter horrible login times even for people without profiles. And random browsing issues. I wasn't in charge of the implementation so...I can only speculate. But the department gets the slam for the performance issues.
@BartSilverstrim Have a look at Evan's answer here: serverfault.com/questions/67743/roaming-profiles-best-practices/…
@BartSilverstrim Do you use controller-based wifi or something else?
@BartSilverstrim And also, this other EA post (re: slow logons): serverfault.com/questions/125465/…
@jscott: should one be concerned about wifis without controllers builtin?
@pauska I was think more controller-based (managed) vs just a bunch of Linksys/Netgear consumer APs.
@pauska Like the Cisco WLC Line
13:54
ah.
@jscott It's controller based. Cisco.
We've grown from bring-your-own-AP to Meru and now Cisco managed wireless networks.
Yeah, we're all Cisco here
3 WLC 4404s and a few hundred LAP 1131 and 1141s
I'm getting a new 8-interface 5 series controller in soon. <3 shiny toys
MJ
MJ
Morning, btw anyone ever used Meraki APs?
But we also probably are overwhelming the AP's to some degree. I wish we had someone with the specialized equipment to do the proper analysis.
13:57
@BartSilverstrim Yes, a site survey is key. You're doing 2.4?
I believe so. I wasn't the one in charge of implementing :-/
We jumped to Cisco when the boss said we needed to do 5Ghz. Meru wasn't there at the time so....
crap. Feature request...the ability to tag lines in chat as notes in our profile for future reference...
3
anyone actually seen any Lingerie Football?
Although I'd probably have ended up with that animated drugged up tweener from the Friday video dancing around in my saved items. It's mesmerizing to watch, much like a train wreck.
@Chopper3: no. Heard of it. Are they allowed to tackle by grabbing the...jersey's?
14:04
yes, apparently
@Chopper3 I've watched it a couple of times. It didn't really do anything for me. It did too good a job of removing any sex appeal of underwear.
yeah, thought so too, just didn't believe it existed when I watched this week's 'Mr. Sunshine'
I believe it started out as a Superbowl companion event that really took off.
tonight's mr sunshine is all about it
14:20
Is Mr Sunshine worth watching? I haven't heard anything yet.
I like it, first show was a bit off but it's ok, odd seeing alison janney play someone other than CJ
ultimately it depends of you like matt perry or not, it's his show
I'm lucky as I work in TV we get access to lots of content before it's released so you can just start watching series and gauge it quickly to decide whether to keep with it or not
I'll try it out. I can't actually recall seeing him in anything since Friends.
studio 60
Seeing that go off air made me sad.
with bradley whitford - it was a good show but a bit preachey
me too but I understood why it got canned
14:24
If something is actually not doing well, then I totally understand cancellation. I'm just happy it was given a fair shot.
Stargate Universe :-(
@BartSilverstrim I'll admit, that one had a rough time getting off the ground. It was finally starting to catch it's stride.
I quite like how we deal with US TV in the UK, our TV stations generally wait to see if a show takes off before buying it, also means we don't get breaks in shows - there's no precedent for that in the UK, people would stop watching it, don't know how the US networks have 'trained' their audiences to accept season breaks to be honest
I've seen much better shows get cancelled quicker, but let's face it. What else does SyFy really have?
@Chopper3 I feel forever in debt to UK TV for giving me Planet Earth.
14:28
@Chopper3 Historically, you got a couple of weeks in the winter where viewership was low, Christmas/NYE. Then the summer months when viewership was also low. Vacations, spending more time outside.
there were decades when UK TV was the best but that's not been the case really since HBO took off
More recently, and I blame SciFi for this, you would have 3 months in the summer, 3 months in the winter.
Basically every non-US centric documentary that I've ever thought was awesome came from BBC and was redubbed with Whoopee Goldberg or someone equally ridiculous.
@packs just saying that I don't think it would be accepted here, i.e. both modern family and cougar town are having large breaks at the moment, UK audiences like to know the show's on next week
@Chopper3 I'm not going to disagree. Frankly, the only reason I cope is that when I find a show I like I tell myth to record it on any channel at any time.
14:30
@MarkM we do still do excellent documentaries yes, but mostly from the BBC, other UK channels tend to sensationalise their docos
Spielberg's new tv show Terra Nova is either going to be great or shite, having lots of production problems
We really only watch 1-2 hours of tv a night, so those big breaks actually let us catch up.
@Chopper3 I don't think too many non-BBC docos make it over seas
But, I'm likely the special case in that regard.
I've a feeling even the BBC are lowering their standards. Have you watched a Panorama, recently?
@packs I thought it was getting on track. It was just too slow in setting up for "siffee" channel, though...I guess it didn't appeal to the ADHD crowd they were changing their name to appeal to. that helped play a part in my cancellation of satellite.
14:38
@BartSilverstrim I felt like Caprica was the same way. It was a bit slow to start, but was starting to get really good.
@Packs: I would need to get the seasons sometime.
It's gotten to the point where I can take or leave most shows. I'm tired of getting into a series just to have it yanked or jump the shark.
I'm watching Transformers Prime with my five year old now regularly. That's about as in depth as I get.
@BartSilverstrim: s/jump the shark/nuke the fridge/
(although I was fairly surprised at that...I thought it would suck, first episode they kill a main character...)
Oh, and I'm almost done watching all of DS9 again.
@SmallClanger they're awful (a mate works on that show and agrees) but horizon is appalling these days
@BartSilverstrim Soundwave?
@BartSilverstrim I'm about halfway through X-Files right now, I'm still debating on what show to do next. Probably La Femme Nikita, though B5 is always a favorite
14:44
@Chopper3 Perhaps you can help me identify the person who invented the technique of putting a dark gradient over the top of exterior shots to make them look more dramatic.
(So I can drown them)
gradient filter overuse was pioneered by Tony Scott, especially in Top Gun and Days of Thunder
Ah, perhaps I need to go after the guy who thought it would be appropriate in BBC documentaries, then.
they tend to come from directors taught at BBC Wales
MJ
MJ
Anyone excited for Game of Thrones on HBO?
That makes sense. Home of Doctor Who/Torchwood. :)
14:49
not really a swords/sorcery kind of guy, although Your Highness looks fun
@MJ. That the Sean Bean fantasy thing?
MJ
MJ
@SmallClanger Yea. He's playing Ned Stark
The name rings a bell. Is this based on a Gene Wolfe book?
@packs Cliffjumper. Voiced by the Rock, or whatever his name is.
MJ
MJ
Nah, George R. R. Martin
14:52
Heh, mixing up my authors a bit. :)
MJ
MJ
The series, Songs of Fire and Ice, is excellent. I highly suggest it.
I'll give it a go. I've a thing for sweeping fantasy epics, though I play too many video games to read many these days.
MJ
MJ
It's very dark, and hardly any magic, and GRRM's writing is of the highest quality.
It's going to make True Blood and Spartacus look tame in comparison...
Sparticus is hilarious
@SmallClanger Speaking of sweeping fantasy epics, Wheel of Time is finally going to end this year, and justing from the first book of Sanderson's it will be way better than anything that preceded the final books.
14:59
I have a friend that works for a large CGI house in London doing budgeting/pricing for potential jobs they're asked to quote on - they've recently had a significantly revised script for 'Rendezvous with Rama" through which I thought interesting.
@Packs: About time. I start to think authors are just slacking off when they let a little thing like their own death, three years previously, get in the way of finishing a book. :)
@SmallClanger Sanderson's put out 2 of his 3 so far, with the 3rd due out later this year.
Reading this makes me think it's a lot of fail on multiple levels. cnn.com/2011/US/03/16/japan.west.coast.fears/index.html?hpt=C2
(Haven't read them, though.)
I made the mistake of starting back in '94. For a long time I only kept reading so I could see the ending, but the new guy is doing a way better job than Jordan ever did.
15:04
@BartSilverstrim Oh for the love of angry kittens
Radiation can't hurt me! I took iodine!
...
@BartSilverstrim …"And your thyroid will be perfectly safe from all the I131 that is so heavy it will likely precipitate out before it gets to your region." (That's usually where they go all slack-jawed and start babbling)
I use Windex for all my anti-radiation needs.
@packs and duct tape! don't forget the duct tape!
@voretaq7 Good call! I can't believe I forgot that. Without duct tape and plastic wrap how am I going to protect my windows?
15:11
@Packs no, you put it over your head.
Wrap several times.
It's the Darwinian method of anti-radiation control. Drink Windex and wrap head firmly in duct tape and plastic.
Lay down, take nap, you should be good in an hour or two.
I find that taking a nap and waiting solves most problems in life.

got a really basic question that will show, once again, how little I know about stuff you guys do all the time. Basically I need to drop in a Windows Terminal Services machine (2k8 64bit) to support no more than 4-6 techies running IE, putty, scp, filezilla, a few command prompts and the VMWare vSphere client - this machine is a temporary thing for a quarter or two - normally I'd use a 'proper' server at it but could I just use a good spec desktop (i5/7) and if so how much memory would I need?
@Chopper3, we run our TS for network operations on a Dell Optiplex 920, with 6GB.
There are 7 of us. It does get a bit slow a times when someone does something, but I think it is related to I/O more then anything else.
what sort of CPU is that, what user numbers do you see and what apps do they use? this will act as a kind of 'jump box' to save some of my staff having to go through a really laborious process to gain access to lots of other systems
if that makes sense
We use the standard AD management tools, ADUC, GPMC. We use the remote desktop, a browser, the vSphere client. We use a text editor. Occasionally someone will try to use it for slipstream a service pack or something like that. It will kill performance.
It has an Intel Core2 Duo E8400 6GB of RAM and a single 250GB disk.
I haven't really done much for monitoring performance..
mornin
hi dave, thanks chris, very helpful, I suppose in my mind I was thinking of every session being a VM with a full OS, multiple copies of apps etc, but it sounds like it's a lot more memory efficient than I'd imagined
16:37
@Chopper3 If you want RDP access to the other systems you can also use TS as a proxy
TS for < 10 users should be a minimal overhead for any modern(ish) box. It's fairly lightweight.
@Chopper3: Terminal services is pretty good with multiple session handling. Nothing like VM's that make copies of the OS in memory/disk to handle.
It's when you get a user pegging the processor that you'll kill performance like a stone.
In Win2k days we had term services with 4 gig handling 10-20 users for doing MS Office, email, light web browsing.
Xeon processors (dual) can't remember speed.
@packs it's into a mostly linux/vmware environment but from W7 laptops
And it worked okay most of the time as long as we kept an eye on it. We had users kill the thing by going to Weather.com and looping a weather map. Memory leak....
I conceptualize it more like just an extra X session, though whether the Windows guys would agree with that I can't say.
16:40
Mem leak plus animation = phone calls, "Why is my session locking up/being so slow?!"
Oh, and we discovered that when users tried running a particular application it would reboot the terminal server.
thanks for the tips guys, told you I'm no use at this sort of thing - if you wanted a TS environment for 100k users with HA over resilient 10Gig links I'm you man, single box stuff like this is, well just in my experiences sorry - thanks again
Oh, I don't like windows terminal services. I'm just saying that there are use cases where by some miracle they tend to work well enough to not make you want to hang yourself by a patch cable in the server room.
I've still got that 19,980 user TS CAL code lying around somewhere so I'll be fine for that :)
We had plenty of deployment quirks, and in an education environment we learned the hard way how much shovelware was NOT compatible with Microsoft's definition of "multiuser."
@Chopper3 You sure it'll be enough?
16:44
this is only for a small dev team I've brought in to fix some new generation set-top box problems, only needs to be about for a few months
...he has minions...many, many minions...
task of the day... to figure how to replicate sonicwall's transparent mode interface for DMZ on a palo alto firewall :|
@packs I told you about that didn't I? I'd asked someone at [main client] if they had a TS CAL code and they just nonchalantly IM'ed over a code, I passed it to someone to register and the came back asking how many CALs we needed as that code still had 20k left on it! :)
@Chopper3 I had forgotten about that!
I'm used to scale but that had me laughing, I'm used to unlimited licences but having an actual number on it amused me
16:48
@Chopper3 I wonder if the 20K is more or less expensive than the unlimited? :-)
@voretaq7 Depends on who defines "site"
I've got two phone interviews, one today, the other friday. Weeee.
why are you interviewing phones?
@packs Oracle's definition (Every desk is a site ;)
Is there something we should know about next-gen smartphones?
16:49
@BartSilverstrim You really do need to these days. There are some AWFUL phones out there
@coredump good luck
I want an iphone. They're pretty.
@voretaq7 But at each site they individually count drawers.
@Chopper3 thanks!
@BartSilverstrim I believe they've made more than one, they may even be happy to sell you one
16:50
it's half luck, really
@coredump Are you hiring or looking?
@packs looking
@coredump never enter a competition you haven't already won
@coredump I wish you half of a good luck!
No really, half of an interview is having the luck of the interviewer ask about stuff you dominate.
I did one for Amazon UK and was perfect, I did another for Ericsson and it completely sucked, but just because he asked stuff that I was not confortable with, while the amazon guy asked all the stuff I deal day-to-day. Of course, Amazon remembered after the 3rd interview that they were searching for local people, not foreigners.
16:56
how about amazon.ca? they let you use Michael Cera's head to deliver packages more quickly
I suddenly realized I didn't want that attached to my name forever :)
@packs it would be better than going through 3 good interviews. The leader of the team actually sent a message to me in Linkedin excusing for the mishapping
@Chopper3 ah.. Ramona...
I greatly enjoyed that film.
Ramona? Like the selena gomez movie thing?
17:01
OHHH Scott Pilgrim.
@packs did you read the graphic novel? It's way better. The movie is also cool, but the comic is reallllllllllyyyyy good
Haven't seen it.
@coredump I haven't, but I recall some of the extras in the movie saying that as well.
And screw you Firefox for telling me that 1) Firefox is misspelled, 2) so is movie
@coredump I'm slightly obsessed with SP's director edgar wright, I have a friend that went out with him for year but I met her just after she'd split with him so never got to meet him :(
@Chopper3 bummer
17:06
Is there any way I could have you introduce me to some celebs next time you're stateside?
You want Rebecca Black's phone number, admit it...
Natalie portman, steve jobs, someone I'd be able to take a picture with that would make others insanely jealous and I'd want the picture to be buried with me?
@packs it's really good, you should read it. There are some better explanations for all that happens
@BartSilverstrim I have a pic with Andrew Morton. Does that count?
The only celebs I really would like to meet are Felicia Day and Daniela Ruah
Felicia day would be good...
@BartSilverstrim that was me saying I specifically don't know that one
17:08
I know Richard Thomas, there's my celeb hookup
@BartSilverstrim though I've met jobs lots of times ;)
sigh
So....you could get me into a jobs party to get a quick picture? I'll wear a turtleneck if that's what it takes.
Hehe. I would meet jobs only to give him an Android plush
not sure he's going to many parties at the moment
I'll settle for Apple Corporate.
I bet it's like a massive apple store...
with corrals for the unicorns that power the iPad2
They shit rainbows, you know.
17:13
lol
Um, they're powered by unicorn souls... You need a pit, not a corral.
Gotta do something to make those new covers stick.
It's how magnets work.
it's actually just a regular office with some very secure parts, they've also got LOTS of other support buildings in and around the main campus
@Chopper3 MAGICAL AND REVOLUTIONARY support buildings? :-)
Oh...I'll never get to see it before I die.
17:15
everything goes initially to 1IL but then you get redirected to any of the buildings, they seem to pick up any spare office space around them
FUCKING MAGNETS HOW DO THEY WORK
@Chopper3 How is your day looking?
@coredump midgits
good why?
@Chopper3 He's about to use all of his flags for the day
17:29
ah
how's it look now?
Bloody @#% apple tv sound issue is hard to search for because of the number of people that may have issues passing through connections or not hooking things up correctly posting about their problem.
Heard rumor there was another update in the works that may fix things but don't know when.
My setup doesn't get much simpler than it is...but it's hard as !@#$ to find it on the Internet.
Why Apple TV? I never saw a compelling reason to own one.
I love mine
Already had the Mac, disconnected satellite, and iTunes content can be easily streamed to it (usually)
17:34
I almost bought an appletv a while ago - ended up getting a Sony IP capable TV - nice
@BartSilverstrim can't you see what's happening using a console and the logs?
As far as I know there's no console on the ATV.
I just spent a couple hundred bucks and built up a shuttle barebones machine for my entertainment center
you can jailbreak one
I did once, wasn't very stable though
i've had it for years and i've never had the itch for an apple tv
17:35
Don't want jailbreak. Just want HDMI to work properly dammit.
I suspect there's something strange with the handshake for HDMI that's not always grokking correctly.

Q: POWERING DOWN AND POWRING UP OF CISCO MDS SAN SWITCH

wildchildHello every One! Can some one walk me through the steps to powering Down and Powering Up of the CISCO MDS (FC SWITCH) 9506 switch? Also, it would be of help if some one can help me with a link which has the steps to do the powering down and powering up of the switch. This is basically for the...

I don't need an antivirus for a huge theater system computer. I don't need dolby digital 21.2 surround sound that makes the walls vibrate. I don't even need a projector for porn that makes the starlets life-size on my wall. I just want to watch my purchased TV shows appear with the sound, dammit!
of for fuck's sake - INCOMING!!!
It's just appleTV gen 2 -> HDMI cable -> vizio LCD TV. That's it.
Step 1) Firmly grasp the power cable by the boot, Step 2) Remove from outlet completely, Step 3) Re-insert prongs into recently evacuated outlet.
2
17:39
have you ruled out the cable @BartSilverstrim
Nothing special. Nothing fancy. But sometimes...I get video, no sound. I have to sometimes sleep->wake the apple TV before it'll get sound, and once I rebooted the AppleTV by removing power and trying it again.
@packs You left out step 2.5: Lick contacts to ensure better contact.
I'm thinking of getting another cable next time I'm at the walmarts.
In the event that locking plugs are in use, see Step 1b) Rotate gently 25 degrees
@voretaq7 Be careful not to reseat your grasp if you experience sticking on Step 2. Tingling of the hand may result.
After I reboot or wake it it usually gets the sound working again.
I don't know if the TV doesn't use the proper HDMI spec or something.
@packs Tingling is a sign of insufficient voltage. Contact your electrician for assistance.
super cheap
it sounds like similar problems I had when a cable was bad
intermittent audio failures
I've seen that a few times... in which case you buy a $20 cable instead of a $5 cable
but never a $100 cable :)
that's silly
I'll grab another cable. I knew that was a possibility I just haven't been to the WalMart to get another one to test.

I bought 10 $2 cables
9 worked, problem solved
That's what I usually do
I figure something isn't getting properly set in the handshake.
@hobodave Inferior cable product! You should only buy monstercable.com/productdisplay.asp?pin=3847
:-)
the markup is ridiculous
(I get a kick out of the idea that someone would spend over $100 on a 4 foot HDMI cable)
17:43
Argh... it appears the only way to replicate the Sonicwall config is to burn a lot of ports :P
I used to work at Best Buy ages ago the employee price on a $60 cable was like $4
Hell I get a kick out of someone spending over $20 (what they go for locally)
Every time I look it up, other people are saying "I have my apple tv going through this amp and optical going to this and rerouting through the heisenberg compensator and now I have no sound!" I just have this intermittent issue where I have to sleep/wake it and/or restart the ATV...isn't there a way to just find that so I know I'm not the only one seeing it? :-/
I just have a single cable from the ATV to the port in my TV's rear. That's it. WORK @#%!!
well it doesn't sound like you've ruled out a single component yet
start with cable, then ATV, and then your TV
we've got some HDMI 'sniffer' kit, but it's in the UK, I think the problem is you're a tightwad, cheapo bum type
17:45
I've heard of quality/reliability issues with Vizio
@hobodave: you're right. I was pursuing the possibility that it was the recent update doing it.
Were you the one making fun of me for spending $20 on an HDMI cable earlier?
Now you're calling me a tightwad? C'mere so I can smack you.
@chopper3 isn't saying anything...maybe he is coming over...
Or he's calibrating his beaming technology to transport you into the shark pit of his volcano base.
@packs Don't tell him about the volcano base! It's called a secret lair for a reason, you big jerk!
You just wait until I figure out the TCP protocol for remote smacking. There shall be many bruises that day, I swear.
WTF someone really just asked "What is CIFS" on a sysadmin call
17:57
what is CIFS?
@Bart: I wondered what this slapd process was for on my debian box...
@hobodave Wiki redirects to SMB
@Zypher What is a sysadmin call?
@BartSilverstrim phone rang, got a big change going on over night on one platform so need to keep an eye on it
@WesleyDavid What's a sysadmin
17:58
oh vendor conference call for sysadmin types
@Zypher what call?
@MarkM What's the proper stance for punching someone in the face with your own face?
@WesleyDavid I'm guessing legs at shoulder width, hands on hips
@WesleyDavid "A Glasgow Kiss"
@Chopper3 it's a dell NDA conference call
17:59
@MarkM I'll have you know that just before falling asleep I had the mental image of a person face punching another person and starting laughing hard. 1AM. Thanks
You really want stability when you're face-fisting someone

Wait, that didn't sound right.
