@BartSilverstrim There the company that does IT for my school system
Oh dear.
They look from their website like a mom-and-pop that grew organically into a mess of whatever is popular in the neighborhood.
@BartSilverstrim Now to find a NPO to work with
Non-profit
Though I really like getting paid
Non profits...ouch...
00:02
@Holocryptic you there?
@BartSilverstrim Well, I can't find any companies to hire me.. and I really need something to work on...
You have to remember that this place is a magical place inhabited by warlocks and witches like those on Bewitched. You just put in an @ with the anme and sooner or later they appear.
Well, you know what they say...if you can't get someone to pay you to do it, do it yourself and get paid. You did say you know several languages. :-)
Start your own business!
Maybe he's like Beetlejuice. Try saying @Holocryptic three times in a row. Or was that the Candyman?
Hmm...one of them kills you though.
Ooh! Food!
Later!
@BartSilverstrim Well, I started out as a programmer and one of the main reasons I quit was because I can't type fast enough to get things done efficiently
So I have a quick question. If I want cron to run something every minute I used * * * * * notify-send "test" correct?
that looks about right.. But it would partly depend on where you set that up.
A slightly different format is used for /etc/crontab & /etc/cron.d/* then what you use with crontab-e
The former needs to also have a username.
I was using crontab -e.
Hmm. So is there any other reason why it would not be working then? Is there a way I can see if there are any log files on it?
00:18
cron entries are usually logged to syslog...
you could set the MAILTO: variable
Assuming you have a working MTA on your local system.
* * * * 5 /home/RebeccaBlack/fun.py
If you are root on the local system. I do suggest you consider putting things in /etc/cron.d instead of the per-user crontabs. IMO it is much cleaner to have stuff in the central location.
OK, I'll try putting it in /etc/cron.d
Thanks for help.
@CodyHarlow, one nice advantage that is that there will probably be some files there that you can copy and modify.
@WesleyDavid I swear Chris Hansen will catch you trying to seduce Rebecca Black...
00:25
OK, so I put it in anacron. I did * * * * * cody notify-send "test". Let's see what that gets.
By the way, this is on a desktop not a server.
Sorry if these questions seem stupid. I'm trying to get a 1-up on my Linux skills while still in high school.
OK, well that's not showing up either. Hmm... Is there another command that I need to run?
Howdy. eric0 / @ahpook here, never tried SF chat before
@ericsorenson, hi
@ericsorenson Welcome to chat. Don't mind the starred references to cocain, bulemics and waking up next to a moose. That's not the usual... no wait, it is normal around here.
And the boobs, @WesleyDavid, don't forget the boobs.
2
@CodyHarlow, I don't know what notify-send does. Does it depend on some environmental setting? cron tasks run with a very limited environment. So your PATH , and many other things may be different.
00:39
@Zoredache It just displays a little notification on the top of the screen. All I know is that it runs just fine when I type it in the command line.
@CodyHarlow, did you see this? ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=615882
It seems to indicate that the DISPLAY variable needs to be set.
Okay, I've added that in as well as the direct path to notify-send.
Whoo! It works.
Thanks for help. :D
00:59
Oh, one last quick question. If I have */2 in minutes does that mean that it will fire off every 2 minutes? So at 8:02, 8:04, 8:06...?
@CodyHarlow Yeah, I think so if I remember cron right
Okay, wonderful. Thanks.
Back to lurking I go.
01:21
Whoa! New people!
01:36
@Holocryptic Hey by chance did you speak to your boss?
answerin' new puppet Qs, woot
@Jacob no not yet. I can definitely say right now we don't have a spot. But maybe when I get ready to leave and after the new school year starts.
@Holocryptic I sort'a assumed there wasn't a spot now, but I didn't know howsoon /when you might leave. Thanks though
@Jacob I'm looking at the 6 month range. Don't worry. I'll be around, so I won't forget.
@Holocryptic not that I tried to imply that you would forget :)
01:46
@ericsorenson I saw that one. You people and your external nodes.
@packs i'm a big fan of database-driven infrastructure. extnodes isnt ideal but beats the pants off (a) trying to figure out scoping nonsense, or (b) ${my::settings::variable} everywhere
So far I've been fortunate in that I'm managing, primarily, a growing number of nearly identical systems. Which has made such complications unnecessary.
02:12
I've seen projects like this before, and it just always seems to blow my mind
I should clarify. Really big honkin ant farm.
HAHAHAHAHAAHA
02:36
@coredump just can't beat the damn thing
I got an email from my K-12 education Customer about looking at some "new" software. The program has a name in the form "Educational Software Blah Blah 2010", but the last modification time on the EXE is 1999 and the copyright date reported in the program is 1995. Gee-- according to this I'll need at least a 486 w/ Windows 3.1 to run this. I wish I was kidding.
@EvanAnderson Wow, whats it do?
@hobodave still not?
nope
20+ attempts on hard
"Educational Assessments", apparently.
From what I can see its major function seems to be to suck. A lot.
02:42
@hobodave ahhh... I may have tuned down the difficult on that :P
Yay! FoxPro!
That's an old but good URL: towel.blinkenlights.nl:666 (it's actually a telnet address, but my chromium reads it ok)
@coredump: Sunspots.

A: Browser-based DNS failover using multiple A records

JacobOK I am going to start by saying DNS is not a good failover system in any way, you need a reverse proxy or load balancer. There are several reasons why the experience is not the same. First of all in chrome it uses The OS to grab DNS info so that is dependent on the OS for the IPs, so the OS in ...

Defunct processes!
02:43
Who's right there?
I think I am..?
Anyone?
@Jacob: I've commented a bit more on the question. You're essentially right in your answer, though I think I'd probably break up the text a bit. I upvoted you and "Deleted Account".
You hit the nail on the head w/ your last comment re: the DNS not knowing that the failed server has failed. DNS round robin is generally a bad idea. I don't know where people got the idea that it provides any kind of fail over or load balancing capability. That's just wrong. Your DNS servers have nothing to do with application availability.
@EvanAnderson He is really bent on the idea.. look at his recent comments
03:18
@coredump 6 more attempts :-\
@hobodave huh?
03:31
@hobo change the difficult for that boss
Some one
Help me please...

Q: Browser-based DNS failover using multiple A records

DanielIt has recently come to my attention that setting up multiple A records for a hostname can be used not only for round-robin load-balancing but also for automatic failover. So I tried testing it: I loaded a page from our domain Noted which of our servers had served the page Turned off the web s...

I really want to pull a look its just a bad Idea and don't do it...
@coredump I'm just callin it quits
@Jacob there is really no helping some people
i'm gonna feel bad if i get a Taxonomist badge for creating the MSSQL-SSMS tag
@Zypher haha
@Zypher I mean really he wants me to explain a blackhole to him
@Zypher send this to SU
0
Q: How do I check what DNS server I'm using (on Mac OS X)

ryanprayogoIn Mac OS X, how do I check what DNS server I'm currently using (preferably a command line solution)? System Preferences > Network shows 192.168.1.1, which is my router's address and not the real DNS server.

Yes I got rep for both SU and SF Awesome sauce
03:43
meh it's an illusion ... the rep will go away on SF during a recalc
@Zypher DAMIT activating plan plan name here objective prevent recalc... method unkown..standby?
hahah
well for now don't press the recalc button on the /reputation route
@Zypher theres no recalc button
all the way at the bottom ...
@Zypher See now I have to get that internship so I can edit the rep table... Look what you've done.. Plan Internship objective edit recalc table method convince SE to give internship move from there....
03:53
sysadmins arn't allowed to edit tables
:)
@Zypher see thats why I said move from there...
I needz a new planz
@hobodave it didn't work, even with the lowest difficult setting? You know that you can change to normal or casual and then get back to the hard setting without starting again right? On the options->gameplay menu
but still the internship would be awesome
and I'd figure out a way...
@coredump what game ya talkin about ?
@coredump I refuse to even try it
I've loaded up a save just prior to the deep roads
@Zypher dragon age 2
04:00
@hobodave ahhh clearly you should get an Xbox
...
that's what I'm playing on
my bad
Have Xbox live?
@hobodave there's a far worse fight after the Deep Roads.
well I've completely respecced my entire party
04:01
@Zypher WAAAITTT I got it I wouldn't be a system admin, I'd be an intern... :)
I really hate Varric
he's a useless twat
I win
the problem with the fight is the retarded AI
and Anders Panacea is bugged for me
it doesn't work when he's alive
04:20
@hobo I simply run from the big lighting power
...
that is the easiest part of the fight
my allies are just retarded
and I'm a melee rogue
varric inevitably will stand right next to teh boss to shoot it, getting cleaved
I've tried ranged, passive, and cautious
anders will heal the tank once, his panacea is bugged so it heals noone, and he will often run and stand next to me when I'm meleeing the boss, and this is on ranged, cautious, and passive too
my tank does well she just can't keep up with the beating
microing 4 idiots that insist on "standing in fire" is not fun
anyway, I've respec'd bow
going back to play through the deep roads again
04:42
I am on a similar fight right now
going badly
Someone on Twitter just followed me. I checked out his blog that was linked in his profile. Here's his professional bio:
"I graduated from the 3 year Computer Systems Technology - Networking program in 2010 .
I am currently employed as a cook at Lilly Kazzilly's Crabshack and Grill "
I don't think he's joking.
05:46
@wesleyDavid That's a pretty awesome bio :p
06:13
mmm...crab

2 hours later…
07:57
@coredump heh I respecced, bumped it up to nightmare and I'm playing the whole dungeon again
I almost beat it, giving up for the night
08:52
morning mungers
Arsehole
Cheers
Quite good though
But Rick-rolling is so old. It's all about Rebecca Black now
lol
your census looks funny
I love that you have like 6 flavors of white
09:04
which are you double counting as one ?
I was just throwing out a big number
I was a dick with our census
7 listed + 'other'
I just wrote "one adult male" and mailed it
and included an unsigned letter telling them to F themselves, politely
09:25
@hobodave there are some very nationalistic people over here, for what it's worth I count myself as European first
09:36
Hah. One of our developers found the bug that caused PHP to use 19GB of ram
Here's a top tip. Don't use PHP, and if you do, don't use Doctrine.
Someone is basically using whereIn('col',$value), but not handling the state if the $value is null, which means Doctrine will return *
which is a 5,000,000 row table
I use both PHP & Doctrine
but I don't suck at programming
facebook uses php
I think they're doing quite alright
and a memory_limit would have helped prevent that
the problem is usually seated on a chair..
yea, the bug is the person who decides to pass null in place of an array
09:44
@hobodave The memory limit has to be high, because under normal operation, (this is normal as defined by TEPCO), the app uses about 768MB of ram
I think i'll tidy up my CV, take the rest of my holiday and resign.
I can only work with competent individuals.
that's the official bug report btw
in case your dude is planning on annoying me and submitting a duplicate
hah. didn't realise it was a bug.
it looks like expected behavior
well it is technically
09:47
seagate announced 300GB 15k and 900GB 10k 2.5" disks yesterday :)
we've ignored it because it's trivial to work around and it actually was introduced by fixing another bug #1558 in the old system
@Chopper3 !
but anyway Doctrine 1 is old news, it sucks and is going the way of the dodo
@Chopper3: 24x300G 15k in a 2U array? mmmmmmm
64MB cache per disk.. jeebus
@TomOConnor if you want I can look into patching that and committing it
09:52
yeah, nice or 22.5TB in 10k in 2U
yeah, or that
that actually brings the gap in pretty much on s-ata
12x2TB 7200rpm is 24TB
Is 300GB 15k particularly new?
(morning all, btw)
@SmallClanger: Yes, in 2,5"
at that size yes
I wonder what the pricing will be though
12x2TB 7200rpm versus 24x900GB 10k
(im guessing pretty substansial).. but price per IOPS or something like that
09:55
as ever it depends on volume
@hobodave We use a pegged Doctrine release, so we'll have to incorporate it ourselves.
the codebase doesn't work with /trunk
pegged to what?
I once had to order over a 100k of the 72GB 15k 2.5 SAS disks - got a good deal on them
I wonder if EMC will sell those disks with VNX
I'd have thought so yes, I'd still rather put heavy-write luns on magnetic than flash/ssd
09:58
VNX supports tiering, so thats my idea aswell
I saw a video demo of it, looks ridicilously easy
autotiering you mean?
"I wantz 5 ssd's, 10 15k's and 10 10k's" and then click create
then provision luns on that pool
or file storage on the same pool, mixed with luns
does that migrate LUNs or clusters/blocks?
blocks, afaik
Oh yeah. Could have sworn HP were doing 15k disks @ 300GB, but they're only 10k.
10:01
cool, must be new, only 3par could do 'sub-lun' until about September last year
@SmallClanger I still don't get how HP let you have 2TB disks in the MSAs but not in EVAs???
@hobodave revision 7690
@TomOConnor that's only 1 commit behind
click on fast forward
it says sub-lun there, so I guess I'll have to trust it
it deduplicates while doing it, so that has to be block
oh nvm that 1 commit is several git commits all together
oh good, that's what you want, no point just doing whole-lun
10:16
Bugger. The Bar owner with Spotify isn't in Barcelona.
madrid wasn't it?
Cadiz
even further
Oh well :P
Good morning.
Hello guys
10:29
hey, up early

Q: Disallow certain user names ?

JacobOn ServerFault we have noticed alot of people naming their accounts Server fault,, Moderator, or new today Deleted account. This could lead to some confusion and I would like to request they be blocked. Also though I haven't seen it, I wonder if someone could sign up with an expletive or non appr...

@Chopper3 6AM school starts at 7:25...
@TomOConnor Have fun on "holiday" (Vacation).... Its most likely better you don't consult while there :)
haha
i need to pack now :(
@Chopper3 They feel its your job to regulate usernames...
just reading that, why did you put it on meta.so?
@Chopper3 because on SF no one saw it; and It was suggestion for the SE software
10:39
Aren't we at the whim of what OpenID and the others allow?
Or can you choose a separate username for the site? (I forget)
@SmallClanger That was changed awhile ago... You can pick
ye, you can pick, I can edit usernames after all, so it's not openID
Good point.
just got my new council tax bill and it's not gone up this year :)
@Chopper3 And.... I'm out... later guys
10:49
bye
can't wait for Bart to get here, got a new brain-rape video for him
That song so should have been called "Black Friday".
UK Census Q35 - Briefly describe what you do (did) in your main job. A. Computery things
@Iain I found that question box online is too short. I can get my job into a tweet, but not into 50 chars.
Computery things works for me :)
@SmallClanger that expression means something different in the US though
@Iain I was so tempted to put "Computer Industry Mediawhore/pundit" but went with IT Systems Designer - yawn
11:09
I requested business cards once to say "UNIX Systems Psychologist". Request was denied.
How about 'Techno Mage'?
I once had 500 metal business cards made up for the hell of it, proved very popular in trading floor circles for reasons I hadn't anticipated
Hah. Not so useful for roaching, though.
I wanna know what you did anticipate.
@Chopper3 which were ?
11:14
I think the clue is in his name. :)
basically as a solid sharp business card it was ideal for chopping out coke
I truly hate this place. Our power keeps going in and out... I can't even get my UPSs to work because of all the surges. I'm surprised that my server is still alive : /
are you in japan?
Afghanistan atm.
11:25
you know how the US military name all their operations - did you know they had one called "Operation Cajun Mousetrap III" - :) x 1000
You've gotta be making that up lol
nope
I've seen some weird op names, but that's pretty ridiculous.
"Tangerine Squeeze", "Red Bull II", "Machete Harvest" and "Purple Haze" are other ones
You know... I always pictured them naming the ops like... they're all in a big board room around a huge oak table that costs more than I make in a year. Then as some poor guyis briefing the current plan, somebody (preferably an old guy with lotsa medals) sticks his hand in the air and says "I've got it! Operation Cajun Mousetrap." with a smug look on his face. The others get a good laugh at the press' expense and they all walk away. Another day in the PR and planning meetings.
11:31
Was Operation Red Bull an effort to give humans wings?
if it gets them through hell they can call them what they like I guess
@packs :)
Probably similar to a board meeting among executives deciding upon the fate of a department in a company.
I think we should all call our next platform/project "Operation Cajun Mousetrap IV"
We're kind of in a stage where "major operations" go pretty decently. The worse times are when people go out for a total of 10 minutes and get hit with an IED. The ones that are really close to where we are and so well hidden we don't catch them. Easily the worst : /
Who knows. Maybe Red Bull got a small cut so they could use the name.
there's a series of linux boxes around the world that I designed where if you looked at the first letter of each system's root passwords in server name order it spells out "BLOWJOBFISTFUCKRIMJOB"
3
11:35
Listening to a lot of NIN at the time?
one of my favourites
@Chopper3 That's awesome. I wonder if you'll ever have to turnover to an admin who can catch that :p
Well, @Chopper3, reading Jacob's userlist thread I see a comment from waffles stating that you're under worked, as a mod, as it is.
only me and the bloke that did the actual build knows, nobody else knows each other's passwords
@packs that's me
Lazy git
11:39
:)
Speaking of which, time to get the toddler dressed and change the diaper. You'd think she was elderly, you know like early 40s.
@packs You said lazy git and thought of you toddler? Lovely :p
your*
I think she's scamming us. My money's on her already being able to dress herself and use the toilet.
Curious if that plan will work with GNU Free Call (hopefully, they come up with a better name too).
12:07
@Iain, such as?
doesn't matter
you sure, there's a lot of it about
it was a direct quote but the source was linked - I just missed it
ah ok
Way to go Brits. You are now forbidding your police from saying, "Evening all" because it might be confusing.
12:21
really ?
No way.
I notice they make no mention of 'Wot wot'
bah the daily mail pha spit
Ohhhhhhhhh, how I hate nano.
@packs Why would you link something with Kesha in a bathing suit, you horrible horrible man!
@packs don't ever believe anything the daily mail says, it's the UK equivalent of Fox News/National Inquirer - just reactionary knee-jerk right-wing lies
12:26
@Packs: If you insist on taking Daily Mail articles as anything close to a genuine indication of what's happening in this country, I'm going to have to fly over there to give you a slap. :)
seriously, they're full of shit, they constantly have these 'cancer scare' articles, they pick something and say it either causes or stops cancer, they've actually been known to contract themselves in the same day's paper
plus they're just racist, homophobic, sexist scum who never name sources because it's all made-up - please never ever look at them again
@Chopper3: Any idea why a VM would be powered on in vsphere by the user "system"?
Hi Bart - new sanity-buggering video for you today; youtube.com/watch?v=uWD0vMrCc6Y
I turned that vm off yesterday :(
12:29
@Packs: This story sums up the mail's approach to journalistic rigour, beautifully: nosleeptilbrooklands.blogspot.com/2011/01/…
@pauska what was that?
@Chopper3 ?
I know I'm not a morning person so I'm probably going out of my way a little bit to share my feeling, but really?!
http://serverfault.com/questions/248037/does-nmap-work-with-ipv6
Let's see...
That comment prompted me to google image her name (I realised I've never seen her before)... she's a pretty unattractive lady : /
12:34
bad acting, check.
tweens in outfits they probably shouldn't be in...well...borderline check...
autotuned to hell, check...
poor effects...check.
crap lyrics, check.
Yeah, Chopper's filling his quota this week.
Singing aside... she's just not that attractive at all.
At all.
And one of the images claimed to be from her sex tape... I hope that's not real. shudders
@Vert: Which story are you referring to?
I was talking about I'm Zack.
@BartSilverstrim I'm talking about how gross Kesha is. I've never seen her before I saw the little blurb about her bikini thing which lead to me googling for her pictures of her... that was a mistake lol.
I would like to apologize to off of our Imperial residents. I was unaware of the gravity of the situation that I was finding myself in. I take your comments to heart and will endevour to never let such an event happen again.
@SmallClanger great article
@ChrisS fine by me
@Vert I've seen the Kesha spunky-tits photos, they're everywhere, she does nothing for me and has very little intelligence at all - plus she's fucking Calvin Harris who'd shag a vacuum cleaner if he could
@packs It's no problem, just didn't want you thinking that paper had any validity, if you want good UK news the BBC, Times, Independent and Guardian are very reliable
12:45
@Chopper3 Spunky-tits photos? It's sorta like a train wreck... something I feel I need to saw, but ultimately don't want to. I have a feeling one bored day I will look for those and be disappointed.
see*
you will be yes
@Chopper3 Actually I think there are cases of that. More common than is let on.
@Chopper3 I actually follow the BBC. I went to look for how I stumbled across that article, it was linked off an Australian's webcomic. So I'm blaming him now :)
I love BBC. I don't really like American media. Most of it is just garbage. For anything outside of our borders I look to Al-Jazeera and BBC.
I thought her name was Ke$ha. Is this a different ugly person with no talent?
12:48
I couldn't bring myself to ape that affectation
@packs Sorry to disappoint you packs, it's just one ugly, unintelligent, worthless example of our species.
Who now makes more than I probably ever will. +1 for society.
@Vert I'm not so sure that's a disappointment. For better or worse, I'm the next best thing to completely clueless when it comes to the music industry nowdays.
the other thing about her I find odd is that she doesn't attempt to sing, she speaks in time, yet she needs autotune for that - makes no sense
I Adele popular in the US? she's no looker but has a nice voice and is doing very well over here
i liked the stuff cracked.com did on kesha
I see a picture of Adele holding a couple of Grammy's, so she must be popular enough.
@RobertMoir Do you have links handy?
12:53
@Packs: I'm with you there. I went to a decemberists gig in birmingham, last week; secretly harbored some vague idea that I was being cool, getting into some unheard of folk band. Turns out their album went to No. 1 in the US.
@SmallClanger The Decemberists are so 2008 :)
I figure that if I've heard of them, or even worse, saw them on The Colbert Report, then they can't be indie.
Yeah, that's me. at least 3 years behind the times.
@SmallClanger Hey, have you heard of this hot new swing inspired band from South Carolina? Squirrel Nuts, or Squirrel Nut Zippos, or something like that. Great stuff!
12:57
squirrel nut zippers?
deer tick. try them.
Am I going to get tubgirled if I google that phrase?
I quite like deer tick too, but loving the new Does it Offend You Yeah album, oh and the new strokes too
@SmallClanger Nah, it's actually a band from the mid-late 90's. Clearly my joke fell fairly flat.
squirrel nut zippers is rebecca black's secret hardcore metal side run riot

Q: Set default outgoing IP on Ubuntu server with multiple IPs

daremonHello, I have a server (10.04 LTS) with 1 NIC and 2 virtual IPs. My /etc/interfaces is: auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 11.22.176.5 network 11.22.176.0 netmask 255.255.255.192 broadcast 11.22.176.63 gateway 11.22.176.1 auto eth0:0 iface eth0:0...

I cant understand this
i especially like the track she did with tony iommi, cozy powell and lemmy
You're not far off. We only bought The Smiths' back catalogue a couple of years ago.
a curl script wich selects the interface, and then reports it.. in a browser.. on a remote browser?
